The Relationship Between Overweight And Obesity And Acculturation Of 12- To 19-Year-Old Mexican American Children, Elsa Ramirez-Brisson Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Overweight And Obesity And Acculturation Of 12- To 19-Year-Old Mexican American Children, Elsa Ramirez-Brisson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Mexican Americans, one of the fastest growing segments of the population, have been identified as having above-average rates of obesity. Yet, among this group, obesity rates seem to differ by immigrant status: recent immigrants, immigrants who have lived in the United States more than 15 years, and U.S.-born Mexican Americans. Guided by the acculturation phenomenon and the social ecological model, the current study assessed all 1,732 Mexican American children 12-19 years old who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2003 and 2008 to determine the association between body mass index (BMI) and language, years living in …

The Relationship Of Provider Cultural Competence And Utilization Of Prenatal Care In The Hmong Of Minnesota, Cynthia J. Larson Jan 2011

The Relationship Of Provider Cultural Competence And Utilization Of Prenatal Care In The Hmong Of Minnesota, Cynthia J. Larson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Experts suggest that the cultural competence of healthcare providers is a critical factor impacting healthcare services to the ethnically diverse patient populations in the U.S. and that it may play a role in improving outcomes and reducing health disparities; however, the association between cultural competence and health outcomes remains unclear. This study used a cross-sectional quantitative design grounded by cultural competency constructs and the ethnic origins theory to explore the relationships between provider cultural competence, adequacy of prenatal care, and neonatal health outcomes in Hmong women, a population whose cultural beliefs affect their use of early and adequate prenatal care. …

General education content teachers in an urban middle school are responsible for the academic performance of Latino English language learners (ELLs) but lack specialized training in language acquisition. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate content teachers' use of the lesson study collaborative model in teaching Latino ELLs. The theoretical framework of cooperative learning and the lesson study planning model guided this study. The research questions addressed the specific English as a second language (ESL) conversations and planning that occurred in interdisciplinary team meetings and lesson study implementation in teaching practice and student performance. Typological analysis of …

Evaluation Of Capacity For Best Practice Of Clinical Vaccine Research In Western Kenya, Sylvie Anne Kwedi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African institutions that perform health research need to continuously evaluate their practices in order to ensure compliance with international standards of good clinical practice (GCP). This mixed-methods study, undertaken at one clinical research site in Western Kenya, was an evaluation of GCP compliance at the site, research participants' satisfaction with research procedures, and research participants' comprehension of informed consent. The qualitative portion of the study involved audit of the site's compliance with GCP standards. The quantitative portion was an assessment of participant satisfaction and informed consent comprehension, undertaken through interviews with a sample of 297 participants. Thematic analysis of the …

Welcome (Back): The Use Of Initiatory Elements In The Reconciliation Of Heretics To The Early Church, Christopher Angel Jan 2011

Welcome (Back): The Use Of Initiatory Elements In The Reconciliation Of Heretics To The Early Church, Christopher Angel

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The sacraments of Reconciliation and Confirmation would be used today for a lapsed Roman Catholic to return to the church and for a non-Catholic Christian to be received into full communion with the church. These rites took centuries to develop; before these sacraments assumed the role that they have today, ritual elements of these sacraments were used to reconcile heretics and schismatics to the Church. In this paper, I examine the practices of the Roman Catholic Church, particularly before the year 700, discussing how water baptism, anointing with chrism, and receiving the Eucharist were prescribed at various times and places …

Conflicting Interests In The Swiss Alps: A Comparative Study Of International Environmental Governance, Shelley Clark

Honors Theses

I owe a great deal ofthanks to the people who helped with my thesis. First, my advisor Dr. John Sonnett helped shape and edit my thesis more than anyone else. My third-reader Dr. Ann Fisher-Wirth and my second-reader Dr. Kees Gispen should also be given credit for the completion ofmy thesis. Dr. Fisher-Wirth has been an inspiration to me since my first year at Ole Miss. She planted the seeds of environmentalism in my head and also fostered the exchange program with the University ofFribourg. Completing the thesis component for the Honors College and the Croft Institute has been an …

Does A Rising Tide Lift All Boats? An Analysis Of China's Increasing Gini Coefficient From 1980-2006, Erin Singleton Jan 2011

Does A Rising Tide Lift All Boats? An Analysis Of China's Increasing Gini Coefficient From 1980-2006, Erin Singleton

Honors Theses

Erin Singleton: Docs A Rising Tide Life All Boats? An Analysis of China's Increasing Gini Coefficient from 1980-2006 (under the direction of Dr. Ali Gungoraydinglu)

Income inequality has become a serious concern for both Chinese citizens and policy makers alike as the Gini coefficient has been consistently rising since the economic transition to a market economy began in 1978. The anti-globalization movement cites this increasing income gap as a negative result of China's entrance into the global market. On the contrary, supporters of globalization cite the dramatic decrease in China's poverty rate during this same period as evidence of globalization's …

Characterisation Of Metallo-Cyclodextrins For Chiral Separations, Gary Hessman Jan 2011

Characterisation Of Metallo-Cyclodextrins For Chiral Separations, Gary Hessman

Doctoral

Almost half of commercial pharmaceuticals are chiral and therefore effective analytical techniques to detect and quantify enantiomers are important in the pharmaceutical sector to ensure drug safety and efficacy. In this work copper(II) complexes of aminoalkane derivatives of β-cyclodextrin (CDEn, CDPn and CDBn) were investigated to determine if they provide a versatile solution for the direct separation of the enantiomers of DOPA, benserazide and carbidopa using capillary electrophoresis. Tyrosine was used as a model compound. Electronic spectroscopy was used in order to determine if copper(II) coordinates to the amino-CDs and to determine if further coordination to the guest species occurs. …

Serine/Arginine-Rich Protein 30c Activates Human Papillomavirus Type 16 L1 Mrna Expression Via A Bimodal Mechanism, Monika Somberg, Xiaoze Li, Cecilia Johansson, Beatrice Orru, Roger Chang, Margaret Rush, Joanna Fay, Fergus Ryan, Stefan Schwartz

Doctoral

Two splice sites on the human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) genome are used exclusively by the late capsid protein L1 mRNAs: SD3632 and SA5639. These splice sites are suppressed in mitotic cells. This study showed that serine/arginine-rich protein 30c (SRp30c), also named SFRS9, activated both SD3632 and SA5639 and induced production of L1 mRNA. Activation of HPV-16 L1 mRNA splicing by SRp30c required an intact arginine/serine-repeat (RS) domain of SRp30c. In addition to this effect, SRp30c could enhance L1 mRNA production indirectly by inhibiting the early 3′-splice site SA3358, which competed with the late 3′-splice site SA5639. SRp30c bound directly …
