Pcb-Contaminated Food In The Canadian Arctic: Interactions Between Environmental Policy, Cultural Values, And The Healthcare System, Katharine K. Brieger Jan 2011

Pcb-Contaminated Food In The Canadian Arctic: Interactions Between Environmental Policy, Cultural Values, And The Healthcare System, Katharine K. Brieger

Pomona Senior Theses

Current Canadian policies do not adequately prevent water contamination or mitigate the effects of existing polychlorinated biphenyl pollution. There is conflict between the Canadian government and the Inuit people over how to approach the pollution problem, arising from a clash of cultural values and traditions. Legislation related to healthcare is an inherently sensitive issue and some measures that seem acceptable to westernized societies are not appropriate for the Inuit. The purpose of this thesis is to answer (a) why polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are in the Arctic, (b) what the effects of PCBs are on the Arctic people, and (c) how …

Fabrication And Preliminary Characterization Of Hydrophobic Silica Aerogel Films For Oil Remediation Studies, Ellen Yang Jan 2011

Fabrication And Preliminary Characterization Of Hydrophobic Silica Aerogel Films For Oil Remediation Studies, Ellen Yang

Pomona Senior Theses

Due to the potential of oil sorbents for oil spill clean-up, hydrophobic silica-based aerogel thin films have been synthesized and characterized by various methods. Aerogels were prepared using a two-step acid/base sol-gel process and functionalized with trimethylchlorosilane in hexane, followed by drying in ambient conditions. After film deposition by spin-coating, samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption analysis (BET surface area = 377.66 m2 /g), and variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (thickness of 287.00 ± 0.85 nm, refractive index of 1.08, porosity of 80.9%). Unlike previous studies with aerogel films, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) was applied to …

Distribution And Abundance Of Introduced Fishes In Florida's Charlotte Harbor Estuary, Charles F. Idelberger, Christopher J. Stafford, Sarah E. Erickson

Gulf and Caribbean Research

A growing number of non-native fishes have been introduced into Florida waters in recent years, yet little information has been available on their distribution and abundance in southwest Florida. The ichthyofauna of the Charlotte Harbor estuary, Florida, was intensively sampled from 1989 through 2007. We collected eight introduced fish taxa: African jewelfish (Hemichromis letourneuxi), blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus), brown hoplo (Hoplosternum littorale), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), Mayan cichlid (Cichlasoma urophthalmus), sailfin catfishes (Pterygoplichthys spp.), spotted tilapia (Tilapia mariae), and walking catfish (Clarias batrachus). These fishes …

Do Landlords Discriminate In The Rental Housing Market? Evidence From An Internent Field Experiment In U.S. Cities, Andrew R. Hanson, Zackary Hawley Jan 2011

Do Landlords Discriminate In The Rental Housing Market? Evidence From An Internent Field Experiment In U.S. Cities, Andrew R. Hanson, Zackary Hawley

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper tests for racial discrimination in the rental housing market using matched-pair audits conducted via e-mail for rental units advertised on-line. We reveal home-seekers’ race to landlords by sending e-mails from names with a high likelihood of association with either whites or African Americans. Generally, discrimination occurs against African American names; however, when the content of the e-mail messages insinuates home-seekers with high social class, discrimination is non-existent. Racial discrimination is more severe in neighborhoods that are near “tipping points” in racial composition, and for units that are part of a larger building.

The Effect Of Location Based Tax Incentives On Establishment Location And Employment Across Industry Sectors, Andrew R. Hanson, Shawn Rohlin Jan 2011

The Effect Of Location Based Tax Incentives On Establishment Location And Employment Across Industry Sectors, Andrew R. Hanson, Shawn Rohlin

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This article examines the potential for location-based employment tax incentives to have a differential effect on establishment location and employment across industry sectors. The authors model the differential effect of the location-based federal Empowerment Zone (EZ) wage tax credit on equilibrium labor and total cost savings across industry sectors. The model guides the empirical work, as the authors test the effect of the program across industry sectors. The empirical analysis shows that location-based tax incentives have a positive effect on firm location in some of the industries their model predicts and a negative effect in industries that could be crowded …

We study the relationship between leisure and happiness, controlling for income and other determinants. Using survey data for the United States in 2007, our results show that certain aspects of leisure, such as leisure activity satisfaction, have a significant impact on individual well-being whereas the amount of leisure time may not play an important role in affecting happiness.

Graded Multiplication Modules And The Graded Ideal \Theta_G (M), Shahabaddin Ebrahimi Atani, Reza Ebrahimi Atani Jan 2011

Graded Multiplication Modules And The Graded Ideal \Theta_G (M), Shahabaddin Ebrahimi Atani, Reza Ebrahimi Atani

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let G be a group and let R be a G-graded commutative ring. For a graded R-module M, the notion of the associated graded ideal \theta_g (M) of R is defined. It is proved that the graded ideal \theta_g (M) is important in the study of graded multiplication modules. Among various application given, the following results are proved: if M is a graded faithful multiplication module, then \theta_g (M) is an idempotent graded multiplication ideal of R such that \theta_g (\theta_g (M)) = \theta_g (M), and every graded representable multiplication R-module is finitely generated.

Coverings Of Lie Groupoids, İlhan İçen, M. Habi̇l Gürsoy, A. Fati̇h Özcan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this work we constitute the category of coverings of the Lie fundamental groupoid associated with a connected smooth manifold. We show that this category is equivalent to the category of universal coverings of a connected smooth manifold. In addition, we prove the equivalence of the category of coverings of a Lie groupoid and the category of actions of this Lie groupoid on a connected smooth manifold. Also we present two side results related to actions of Lie groupoids on the manifolds and coverings of Lie groupoids.

Probabilities For Absolute Irreducibility Of Multivariate Polynomials By The Polytope Method, Fati̇h Koyuncu, Ferruh Özbudak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Motivated by the Dubickas's result in [1], which computes the probability of the irreducible polynomials by Eisenstein's criterion for some families of polynomials in Z[x], we calculate the probabilities which represent the ratio of absolutely irreducible multivariate polynomials by the polytope method in some families of polynomials over arbitrary fields.

On Generalized (\Alpha,\Beta)-Derivations Of Semiprime Rings, Faisal Ali, Muhammad Anwar Chaudhry Jan 2011

On Generalized (\Alpha,\Beta)-Derivations Of Semiprime Rings, Faisal Ali, Muhammad Anwar Chaudhry

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We investigate some properties of generalized (\alpha,\beta)-derivations on semiprime rings. Among some other results, we show that if g is a generalized (\alpha,\beta)-derivation, with associated (\alpha,\beta)-derivation \delta, on a semiprime ring R such that [g(x),\alpha(x)]=0 for all x\in R, then \delta(x)[y,z]=0 for all x,y,z\in R and \delta is central. We also show that if \alpha,\nu,\tau are endomorphisms and \beta,\mu are automorphisms of a semiprime ring R and if R has a generalized (\alpha,\beta)-derivation g, with associated (\alpha,\beta)-derivation \delta, such that g([\mu(x),w(y)])=[\nu(x),w(y)]_{\alpha,\tau}, where w:R\rightarrow R is commutativity preserving, then [y,z]\delta(w(p))=0 for all y,z,p\in R.

Combinatorial Results For Order-Preserving And Order-Decreasing Transformations, Gonca Ayik, Hayrullah Ayik, Meti̇n Koç

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let O_n and C_n be the semigroup of all order-preserving transformations and of all order-preserving and order-decreasing transformations on the finite set X_n={1,2,\ldots ,n}, respectively. Let \fix (\alpha )={x\in X_n:x\alpha =x} for any transformation \alpha. In this paper, for any Y\subseteq X_n, we find the cardinalities of the sets O_{n,Y}={\alpha\in O_n:\fix (\alpha)=Y} and C_{n,Y}={\alpha\in C_n: \fix (\alpha )=Y}. Moreover, we find the numbers of transformations of O_n and C_n with r fixed points.

Gpq Modules And Generalized Armendariz Modules, Liang Zhao, Xiaosheng Zhu Jan 2011

Gpq Modules And Generalized Armendariz Modules, Liang Zhao, Xiaosheng Zhu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let M_R be a right R-module. We introduce the concept of right generalized p.q.-Baer modules (or simply, right GPQ modules) to extend the notion of right p.q.-Baer modules. We study on the relationship between the GPQ property of a module M_R and various quasi-Armendariz properties. We prove that every right GPQ module is a quasi-Armendariz module. As a sequence, we obtain a general form of some known results considering the p.q.Baer property of a ring, some known results are extended. Moreover, we prove that for the formal triangular ring R constructed from a pair of rings S, T and a …

Generalized Derivations On Lie Ideals In Prime Rings, Öznur Gölbaşi, Emi̇ne Koç

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let R be a prime ring with characteristic different from two, U a nonzero Lie ideal of R and f be a generalized derivation associated with d. We prove the following results: (i) If [u,f(u)] \in Z, for all u \in U, then U \subset Z. (ii) (f,d) and (g,h) be two generalized derivations of R such that f(u)v=ug(v), for all u,v \in U, then U \subset Z. (iii) f([u,v])=\pm \lbrack u,v], for all u,v\in U, then U \subset Z.

Quantification Of Unfractionated Heparin In Human Plasma And Whole Blood By Means Of Novel Fluorogenic Anti-Fxa Assays, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, Leanne F. Harris, James S. O'Donnell, Anthony J. Killard

Articles

Novel and sensitive plate-based fluorogenic anti-factor Xa (FXa) assays were investigated to quantify unfractionated heparin (UFH) in human plasma and whole blood within the therapeutic ranges of 0–1.6 U/mL and 0–0.8 U/mL, respectively. Two fluorogenic anti-FXa assay methods were defined for low (0–0.6 U/mL) and high (0.6–1.2 U/mL) pharmacologically relevant UFH concentration ranges in pooled human plasma. In both cases significant differences were observed at intervals of 0.2 U/mL (P < 0.05). The semi-logarithmic plots of the calibration curves in the low and high UFH range were both fitted to linear regressions with correlation coefficients of 0.96 and >0.99, respectively. The assay was also optimized for whole blood which was capable of differentiating UFH concentrations at intervals of 0.2 U/mL (P < 0.05) in the range of 0–0.4 U/mL. The statistically different results were fitted to a linear regression with a correlation coefficient of >0.99. The results obtained in this study …

Molecular Diagnosis Of Sexually-Transmitted Chlamydia Trachomatis In The United States, April L. Harkins, Munson Erik

Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Chlamydia, with its Chlamydia trachomatis etiology, is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States and is often transmitted via asymptomatic individuals. This review summarizes traditional and molecular-based diagnostic modalities specific to C. trachomatis. Several commercially available, FDA-approved molecular methods to diagnose urogenital C. trachomatis infection include nucleic acid hybridization, signal amplification, polymerase chain reaction, strand displacement amplification, and transcription-mediated amplification. Molecular-based methods are rapid and reliable genital specimen screening measures, especially when applied to areas of high disease prevalence. However, clinical and analytical sensitivity for some commercial systems decreases dramatically when testing urine samples. In vitro …

The Effects Of Disclosure Type And Audit Committee Expertise On Chief Audit Executives’ Tolerance For Financial Misstatements, Carolyn S. Norman, Jacob M. Rose, Ikseon Suh

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

This study involves an experiment where 73 Chief Audit Executives and deputy Chief Audit Executives determine the amount of adjustment required to correct a misstatement. We manipulate the financial reporting location of the misstatement (recognized vs. disclosed) and the level of audit committee expertise (high vs. low). The results indicate that financial reporting location has significant effects on internal auditors’ decisions to correct misstatements. Specifically, internal auditors are more willing to waive disclosed misstatements relative to recognized misstatements. Contrary to expectations, the results do not indicate that increased audit committee expertise and associated increases in audit committee members’ perceived powers …

The Revenge Of The Second Banana A Female Sidekick's Survival Guide, Melissa Mason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I returned to school to receive an MFA in Musical Theater for many reasons, but paramount was the need to further explore and develop my range as an actress. Throughout my career, I have played a variety of roles, but none as challenging or possibly as rewarding as the man-hungry secretary UCharlieV in James Valcq5s Zombies from the Beyond, produced by the Jester Theatre in Winter Garden, FL. Performing this role allowed me to achieve one of my objectives when entering the grad program at UCF: to transition from a classical ingénue or soubrette into a leading lady or character …

Building A Workable Model For Youth Theatre An Exploration Into A Courageous And Complex Field, Megan E. Mayo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As an active director of productions featuring youth actors, I find myself debating the same questions continuously: Are there clear and demonstrated differences between working with young people and adults when directing a youth theatre production? Are there approaches and methods of working with young people that differs greatly from working with adults? Are these methods supported and utilized by those working professionally in the field? Is there an ideal format for a theatre producing only productions with youth? I believe that directing young actors tends to require a shift in focus due to the pliability, sensitivity, and inexperience of …
