Working Memory In Simultaneous Interpreters: Effects Of Task And Age, Teresa Signorelli, Henk Haarmann, Loraine Obler Jan 2011

Working Memory In Simultaneous Interpreters: Effects Of Task And Age, Teresa Signorelli, Henk Haarmann, Loraine Obler

Publications and Research

This study examines whether interpreters have better working memory (WM) than noninterpreters, taking into account different WM components and the potential modulatory influence of age. Younger and older interpreters and non-interpreters were tested on reading span, nonword repetition, and order- and category-cued recall, using English, second-language materials. Articulation rate was also assessed. Interpreters outperformed non-interpreters in reading span and nonword repetition, but not cued recall and articulation rate. These results suggest that interpreters have better ability to manipulate information in working memory and process or store sub-lexical phonological representations, but have no advantage in short-term retention of words and their …

The Benefits Of Living In Foreign Language Housing: The Effect Of Language Use And Second-Language Type On Oral Proficiency Gains, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Rob A. Martinsen, Jennifer Brown, Cary Johnson Jan 2011

The Benefits Of Living In Foreign Language Housing: The Effect Of Language Use And Second-Language Type On Oral Proficiency Gains, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Rob A. Martinsen, Jennifer Brown, Cary Johnson

Faculty Publications

Many colleges and universities in North America employ foreign language housing (FLH) as a means of exposing students to a second language (L2). However, little research examines the effectiveness of these houses on L2 use and gains. The purpose of this study was to examine whether L2 learners living in FLH use the L2 more and whether they make greater language gains than classroom-only learners. This study also evaluated what kinds of tasks predict greater gains and whether such gains are related to the L2 studied. FLH learners of French, German, Russian, and Japanese were matched with classroom-only learners based …

Spray-painted atop an old tenement building in the East Village of Manhattan is a large fossilized graffiti image of a tyrannosaurus rex that reads: “NYC EATS ITS YOUNG.” With its ribs exposed and mouth open, this image represents symbolically what many young people in the neighborhood already know intimately and have experienced: New York City (NYC) is not an easy place to grow up. Their social safety nets are being dismantled and the public institutions they rely on every day often fail them. In NYC, public school budgets are being slashed each year even though the high school dropout/push-out rates …

Human activity in the last century has led to a substantial increase in nitrogen (N) emissions and deposition. This N deposition has reached a level that has caused or is likely to cause alterations to the structure and function of many ecosystems across the United States. One approach for quantifying the level of pollution that would be harmful to ecosystems is the critical loads approach. The critical load is dei ned as the level of a pollutant below which no detrimental ecological effect occurs over the long term according to present knowledge.

The objective of this project was to synthesize …

Nitrogen Addition Shapes Soil Phosphorus Availability In Two Reforested Tropical Forests In Southern China, Xiankai Lu, Jiangming Mo, Frank S. Gilliam, Hua Fang, Feifei Zhu, Yunting Fang, Wei Zhang, Juan Huang Jan 2011

Nitrogen Addition Shapes Soil Phosphorus Availability In Two Reforested Tropical Forests In Southern China, Xiankai Lu, Jiangming Mo, Frank S. Gilliam, Hua Fang, Feifei Zhu, Yunting Fang, Wei Zhang, Juan Huang

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Scant information is available on how soil phosphorus (P) availability responds to atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition, especially in the tropical zones. This study examined the effect of N addition on soil P availability, and compared this effect between forest sites of contrasting land-use history. Effects of N addition on soil properties, litterfall production, P release from decomposing litter, and soil P availability were studied in a disturbed (reforested pine forest with previous understory vegetation and litter harvesting) and a rehabilitated (reforested mixed pine/broadleaf forest with no understory vegetation and litter harvesting) tropical forest in southern China. Experimental N-treatments (above ambient) …

Cell Count Moments In The Halo Model, J. N. Fry, S. Colombi, Pablo Fosalba, Anand Balaraman, István Szapudi, R. Teyssier Jan 2011

Cell Count Moments In The Halo Model, J. N. Fry, S. Colombi, Pablo Fosalba, Anand Balaraman, István Szapudi, R. Teyssier

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We study cell count moments up to fifth order of the distributions of haloes, of halo substructures as a proxy for galaxies, and of mass in the context of the halo model and compare theoretical predictions to the results of numerical simulations. On scales larger than the size of the largest cluster, we present a simple point cluster model in which results depend only on cluster–cluster correlations and on the distribution of the number of objects within a cluster, or cluster occupancy. The point cluster model leads to expressions for moments of galaxy counts in which the volume-averaged moments on …

Attracting K-12 Students Towards Engineering Disciplines With Project Based Learning Modules, Alok K. Verma Jan 2011

Attracting K-12 Students Towards Engineering Disciplines With Project Based Learning Modules, Alok K. Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Low enrollment and high attrition rates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) based degree programs have created a workforce problem in industries like shipbuilding and repair which are important for national security. Part of this problem can be attributed to pedagogical issues like lack of engaging hands-on activities utilized for science and math education in middle and high schools. Lack of student interest in technical careers can also be attributed to lack of an integrated approach in teaching math, science and technical education. To engage student's interest in the technical career path, it is important that students establish a …

Growth of Lactobacillus paracasei ATCC 334, in a cheese-ripening model system based upon a medium prepared from ripening Cheddar cheese extract (CCE) was evaluated. Lactobacillus paracasei ATCC 334 grows in CCE made from cheese ripened for 2 (2mCCE), 6 (6mCCE), and 8 (8mCCE) mo, to final cell densities of 5.9 × 108, 1.2 × 108, and 2.1 × 107 cfu/mL, respectively. Biochemical analysis and mass balance equations were used to determine substrate consumption patterns and products formed in 2mCCE. The products formed included formate, acetate, and d-lactate. These data allowed us to identify the pathways likely used and to initiate …

Lactobacillus helveticus CNRZ 32 is recognized for its ability to decrease bitterness and accelerate flavor development in cheese, and has also been shown to release bioactive peptides in milk. Similar capabilities have been documented in other strains of Lb. helveticus, but the ability of different strains to affect these characteristics can vary widely. Because these attributes are associated with enzymes involved in proteolysis or AA catabolism, we performed comparative genome hybridizations to a CNRZ 32 microarray to explore the distribution of genes encoding such enzymes across a bank of 38 Lb. helveticus strains, including 2 archival samples of CNRZ 32. …

Antiaromatic Dianions: Dianions Of Dixanthylidene By Reduction And Attempted Excited-State Deprotonation, Mary Black, Clifford Woodford, Nancy S. Mills Jan 2011

Antiaromatic Dianions: Dianions Of Dixanthylidene By Reduction And Attempted Excited-State Deprotonation, Mary Black, Clifford Woodford, Nancy S. Mills

Chemistry Faculty Research

Reduction of dixanthylidene with potassium or lithium resulted in formation of the antiaromatic dianion in high yield. Attempts to form the dianion by excited-state deprotonation of dixanthene with n-butyllithium/TMEDA resulted in formation of the tetraanion from deprotonation ortho to the oxygen. Orientation of the sp3 hydrogens presumably allows preferential deprotonation of the xanthene rings.

Access To Nmr Spectroscopy For Two-Year College Students: The Nmr Site At Trinity University, Nancy S. Mills, M. Shanklin

Chemistry Faculty Research

Students at two-year colleges and small four-year colleges have often obtained their exposure to NMR spectroscopy through "canned" spectra because the cost of an NMR spectrometer, particularly a high-field spectrometer, is prohibitive in these environments. This article describes the design of a NMR site at Trinity University in which spectral data from student samples from community colleges and several four-year colleges are obtained on a 300 MHz NMR spectrometer. The unprocessed free induction decay (FID) is distributed to the students via the Internet and then processed by the students at their local institutions. The success of the NMR site at …

Potters' Marks And Potmarks, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

The brief remarks and the detailed catalogue presented below, along with the author's forthcoming (a) re-study of the discoveries of the British expedition to Enkomi, supplement and update the author's 2002 study of the marked pottery found at Enkomi. In both cases, it is more a matter of adding, refining, and correcting than significantly changing the observations presented in the earlier paper. But even though they are not headline-grabbing, these contributions are important in that they add to the gradually accumulating evidence for marked vases in circulation in Late Bronze Age Cyprus. Because we cannot (yet) 'read' the marks directly …

China's Official Media Portrayal Of Religion (1996-2005): Policy Change In A Desecularizing Society, Qingjiang Yao, D. A. Stout, Zhaoxi Liu

Communication Faculty Research

This content analysis of religion news coverage in the People's Daily during a 10-year period (1996–2005) found a more positive tone toward religion after 2001, when a significant policy change was announced by Chinese political leaders. The number of newspaper articles about religion increased steadily. Under-representation of Christianity suggested by previous studies was not found, but a prejudicial tone toward different religions was identified.

Generational Shift And Drug Abuse In Older Americans, John B. White, David F. Duncan, Thomas Nicholson, Dana Bradley, John Bonaguro

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Since the problem of substance abuse by older adults began to receive serious professional attention, the focus has been almost exclusively on alcohol abuse. This reality is changing as the “baby boomers” age. We examined data from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (1985) and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2006) comparing nationwide prevalence of both legal and illicit drugs. Use of drugs by category varied over the study period; some showed little change (e.g., alcohol) while others showed marked increase (e.g., marijuana, cocaine). We found that the population of older Americans in 2006 contained greater …

Fellow~Feeling And The Moral Life: Book Review, Patrick Mello

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

In his Fellow-Feeling and the Moral Life, Joseph Duke Filonowicz challenges readers to modify the premises underlying much moral philosophy since Kant by considering with open minds whether human beings possess an innate moral sense. Despite the systematic logical satisfaction achieved by ethical rationalism, Filonowicz argues that the dogged adherence to reason reduces morality to a mere set of anemic thought-experiments having little to do with the actions undertaken by people living emotionally complex lives. Modifying rationalism, Filonowicz finds inspiration from a notion expressed in Henry Miller's Black Spring, that "what is not in the open streets is …

Art And Religion In Eighteenth~Century Europe: Book Review, Karen Bryant

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

With publications such as The French Revolution 1789-1804: Liberty, Authority and the Search for Stability (Palgrave, 2004), Christianity in Revolutionary Europe, 1760-1830 (Cambridge University Press, 2002), Anticlericalism in Britain from the Reformation to the First World War (Sutton, 2000), Religion and Revolution in France, 1780-1804 (Macmillan, 2000), and now Art and Religion in Eighteenth-Century Europe (2009, Reaktion), Nigel Aston has established himself as an erudite sleuth bent on uncovering in meticulous detail those subjects within eighteenth-century religious scholarship that hitherto have been either ignored or given short shrift. Aston does not disappoint with his latest book in which he …

Vice, Virtue, And Industry: The Church Of Scotland's Employment Of Political Economy, C. 1700-C. 1750, Ryan K. Frace

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

When describing the Scottish Society for Propagating Christian Knowledge in 1750, Edinburgh's minister Hugh Blair proclaimed:

It must be the interest of every good man, of every Briton, to encourage this design tending so evidently to make us a happy, a free, and a united nation. Religion and liberty, industry and joy, are sisters, and never appear to such advantage as when in company [together], so that now, Religion and Industry go hand in hand, strengthen and establish one another.

Blair's comment illustrates an intriguing and important development: by the mid-eighteenth century, political economy-a central component of the Scottish Enlightenment-had …

Bodies Of Thought: Science, Religion, And The Soul In The Early Enlightenment: Book Review, Robin Runia

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Of what does the soul consist? What is the relationship of the soul to the body? What are the implications of the soul's materiality or immateriality for its immortality? Ann Thomson's meticulous examination of these questions and the answers posed by early Enlightenment thinkers sets out to show how previous critical labels have failed to adequately reflect the complexity of the period's debates about the soul.
