Characterizing A Single Photon Detector, Paul N. Rojas
Characterizing A Single Photon Detector, Paul N. Rojas
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
I will present my work about constructing and characterizing a single photon detector. Using the 1550nm laser and second harmonic light generation, I am able to count single photons on a Multi‐Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC) silicon APD. My results show that upwards of 22% quantum efficiency is achievable with the MPPC. Future work will include coincidence detection of correlated photon‐pair.
Four-Window Technique For Measuring Optical-Phase-Space-Time-Frequency Tomography, Rachel A. Blaser
Four-Window Technique For Measuring Optical-Phase-Space-Time-Frequency Tomography, Rachel A. Blaser
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
A new approach, the four-window technique, was developed to measure optical phase-space-time-frequency tomography (OPSTFT). The four-window technique is based on balanced heterodyne detection with two local oscillator (LO) fields. This technique can provide independent control of position, momentum, time and frequency resolution. The OPSTFT is a Wigner distribution function of two independent Fourier transform pairs, phase-space and time-frequency. The OPSTFT can be applied for early disease detection.

Quincy And Torch Lake Railroad Engine House Facility Management And Interpretive Plan, Dennis H. Leopold
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The “Quincy & Torch Lake Railroad Engine House Facility Management and Interpretive Plan" was designed to serve as a guide to aid the Quincy Mine Hoist Association in their efforts to restore and interpret historic railroad resources under their stewardship. Early searches for existing management and interpretive plans demonstrated that similar plans were primarily produced by the National Park Service and were intended to guide large scale heritage sites that consist of a variety of cultural resources. This project adapts concepts found in those large scale management and interpretive site plans, to guide small scale site management, restoration, and interpretive …
Tracking A Non-Cooperative Target Using A Doppler Radar Wireless Sensor Network, Michael K. Blaser
Tracking A Non-Cooperative Target Using A Doppler Radar Wireless Sensor Network, Michael K. Blaser
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Tracking or target localization is used in a wide range of important tasks from knowing when your flight will arrive to ensuring your mail is received on time. Tracking provides the location of resources enabling solutions to complex logistical problems. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) create new opportunities when applied to tracking, such as more flexible deployment and real-time information. When radar is used as the sensing element in a tracking WSN better results can be obtained; because radar has a comparatively larger range both in distance and angle to other sensors commonly used in WSNs. This allows for less nodes …
Detection Of Complex Point Targets With Distributed Assets In A Mimo Radar System, Ishtiaque Amin
Detection Of Complex Point Targets With Distributed Assets In A Mimo Radar System, Ishtiaque Amin
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The report explores the problem of detecting complex point target models in a MIMO radar system. A complex point target is a mathematical and statistical model for a radar target that is not resolved in space, but exhibits varying complex reflectivity across the different bistatic view angles. The complex reflectivity can be modeled as a complex stochastic process whose index set is the set of all the bistatic view angles, and the parameters of the stochastic process follow from an analysis of a target model comprising a number of ideal point scatterers randomly located within some radius of the targets …
Atp Modeling Of Internal Transformer Faults For Relay Performance Testing, Elizaveta O. Egorova
Atp Modeling Of Internal Transformer Faults For Relay Performance Testing, Elizaveta O. Egorova
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Transformers are very important elements of any power system. Unfortunately, they are subjected to through-faults and abnormal operating conditions which can affect not only the transformer itself but also other equipment connected to the transformer. Thus, it is essential to provide sufficient protection for transformers as well as the best possible selectivity and sensitivity of the protection. Nowadays microprocessor-based relays are widely used to protect power equipment. Current differential and voltage protection strategies are used in transformer protection applications and provide fast and sensitive multi-level protection and monitoring. The elements responsible for detecting turn-to-turn and turn-to-ground faults are the negative-sequence …

Nanofluid Optical Property Characterization: Towards Efficient Direct Absorption Solar Collectors, R. A. Taylor, P. E. Phelan, Todd Otanicar, R. Adrian, R. Prasher
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works
Suspensions of nanoparticles (i.e., particles with diameters < 100 nm) in liquids, termed nanofluids, show remarkable thermal and optical property changes from the base liquid at low particle loadings. Recent studies also indicate that selected nanofluids may improve the efficiency of direct absorption solar thermal collectors. To determine the effectiveness of nanofluids in solar applications, their ability to convert light energy to thermal energy must be known. That is, their absorption of the solar spectrum must be established. Accordingly, this study compares model predictions to spectroscopic measurements of extinction coefficients over wavelengths that are important for solar energy (0.25 to 2.5 mu m). A simple addition of the base fluid and nanoparticle extinction coefficients is applied as an approximation of the effective nanofluid extinction coefficient. Comparisons with measured extinction coefficients reveal that the approximation works well with water-based nanofluids containing graphite nanoparticles but less well with metallic nanoparticles and/or oil-based fluids. For the materials used in this study, over 95% of incoming sunlight can be absorbed (in a nanofluid thickness >= 10 cm) with extremely low nanoparticle volume fractions - less than 1 x 10(-5), or 10 parts per million. Thus, nanofluids could be used to absorb sunlight with a negligible amount of viscosity and/or density (read: pumping power) increase.

Experimental Method Calibration (Mecr): A New Relative Method For Heat Flux Sensor Calibration, Craig D. Adams, A Jean, M Medina, F Miranville
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Heat flux sensor calibration is often expensive, but it is also a fundamental step to obtain valid results. According to the needs, several calibration procedures could be considered. If experimental interpretations focus on heat flux values comparison rather than true values, a relative calibration with high accuracy can be performed. This paper focuses on a new relative calibration-type method of heat flux sensors (HFSs). In general, the HFSs were originally (even recently) factory and in-house-calibrated, but this method was used to calibrate them to an exact common reading to help in performing accurate experiments and eliminating errors that could result …
Characterizing Liquefaction Potential Of Pleistocene Soil Deposits In The Charleston Area, South Carolina, Tahereh Heidari
Characterizing Liquefaction Potential Of Pleistocene Soil Deposits In The Charleston Area, South Carolina, Tahereh Heidari
All Dissertations
Liquefaction potential of major Pleistocene deposits in the Greater Charleston area, South Carolina is investigated in this dissertation. The data considered to characterize liquefaction potential include field performance information the 1886 Charleston earthquake and the results of many seismic cone penetration tests with pore water measurements (SCPTu). The investigation begins with the Mount Pleasant area, and then expands to the entire Greater Charleston area.
A liquefaction potential map of Mount Pleasant is created through reviewing available first-hand accounts of ground behavior during the 1886 earthquake, analyzing cone penetration test and shear wave velocity data, and correlating the results with geology. …

What is behind the current wave of antiimmigrant fervor Racism Nativism National security concerns A recent article by Camilo Ortiz posits that psychological authoritarianism explains the recent outbreak of vigilantism and harsh law better than any of these other motives My essay agrees with Ortiz and shows how understanding antiimmigrant sentiment in these terms advances our understanding of it Once one understands how the syndrome underlies much of the current reaction toward immigrants particularly ones from south of the US border it becomes easier to frame measures to limit some of its excesses I argue that Mr Ortiz's interpretation constitutes …

There is little doubt that Wikipedia is one of the world’s most influential websites today – and its sphere of influence is set to grow in days to come. The evidence for this is strong. As of December 2010, Wikipedia is the Internet’s 6th most popular website (by virtue of the Alexa Traffic Rank), and it is also the most popular "general reference" site in cyberspace, with almost 4 million articles in the English language edition. It has been and will continue to be the flagship of Web 2.0, with every single edit being potentially scrutinised by a global audience, …
Some Technological Implications For Ascertaining The Contents Of Contracts In Web-Based Transactions, Eliza Mik
Some Technological Implications For Ascertaining The Contents Of Contracts In Web-Based Transactions, Eliza Mik
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This paper points out some unexpected relationships between specific aspects of contract law and specific Internet-related technologies. The discussion is not about the interplay between “Law” and “Technology,” or the “Law” and the “Internet.” The aim is modest: to identify some theoretical chokepoints created by the technologies involved in web-based commerce and to point out the legal uncertainties persisting in this area. The analysis is confined to the process of contract formation, not to matters of substantive law. It is during this process that parties assume their contractual obligations and the contents of a contract crystallize.

Double-Edged Transparency In Teams, Parimal Bag, Nona Pepito

In a team project with significant complementarities between various players' individual tasks, news of early success by some encourages others to push ahead with their own tasks while lack of success has the opposite effect. This ex-post disparity in incentives created gives rise to two differing implications, ex ante, for an ideal team transparency. Sometimes it is better to commit to complete secrecy within the team of the various participants' interim progress as it mitigates the negative effect of failures. In some other situations, commitment to full disclosure is better as players are then encouraged to be proactive by exerting …

Contractual Interpretation In Singapore After Zurich Insurance: Continued Refinement, Yihan Goh
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Ever since Lord Hoffmann’s authoritative restatement of the principles relating to the interpretation of contracts in Investors Compensation Scheme v West Bromwich Building Society, various common law courts and academics have weighed in with their views on two main issues: whether the contextual approach articulated in Investors in fact represents a step forward from the traditional literal approach; and, accepting the operation of the contextual approach, whether there remains room for the exclusion of certain extrinsic evidence in interpreting contracts. But the foremost consideration underpinning these issues is that of the perceived uncertainty which the contextual approach brings. The Singapore …

Self Injury And The Challenges Of Responding To Young People In Care:The Experiences Of A Sample Of Social Care Workers, David Williams, Robbie Gilligan
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This article explores the experiences of a sample of residential social care staff working with young people who self injure. Initially, a phone survey was conducted with residential centres caring for young people aged between 12-18 years located in Dublin, to identify centres where self injury had occurred within the twelve months prior to data collection in February 2008. Questionnaires were then sent to the centres where confirmed self injury had occurred and follow up interviews were thereafter conducted with ten residential social care workers. Each of the workers interviewed had been involved in managing the most recent incident of …

The world has experienced many developments of each economic model. The interesting thing is that, the world wide economic development tend to be a linear development. If we seeon the past, e.g. several centuries ago, the economy in the world is all on the pure form of trading. Every area, with its own communities, has different natural resources and their own made-craft. Because of the difference in the community and natural resources each area has, it results on the commodity differentiation. It can not be denied that as the time goes by, human's needs will also develop not only in …
