Applied Synectics To Teach Community Development For Living And Learning Communities To Resident Advisors And Community Assistants At California State University Monterey Bay, Christina Sierra-Jones

This action research investigated the use of the synectics instructional model to teach community development to Resident Advisors and Community Assistnats at California State University Monterey Bay. Feedback from participants of the trainings was collected using online surveys and focus groups. The teacher-researcher also maintained a reflective journal of the training sessions. Findings supported that synectics promoted concept development and creative thinking and was a useful problem solving tool to organize training sessions and schedules. The research suggested combining the synectic models and adding more learning strategies improved the effectiveness of the model for teaching and learning.

Following the launching of Sputnik in 1957, Congress passed the National Defense Education Act of 1958 that primarily funded research for the teaching of science, foreign language, and math. English was omitted, but in 1961, due to persuading from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Congress funded a program that established institutes and centers for research for the teaching of English.

In my research I argue that in order to secure federal funding, the NCTE altered its formal mission to accommodate popular educational rhetoric. Ironically, after achieving federal funding for curricula research one outcome was a recommendation for …

For some environmental science applications, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) are increasingly recognized for their capacity to collect remotely sensed data in a safer, more efficient and effective manner than is permitted with manned aircraft and satellite remote sensing platforms. To date, however, technological, human, and other challenges have constrained adoption of UASs in the environmental sciences. A central focus of intelligence is the identification, analysis and assessment of threat. However, as acknowledged by intelligence practitioners, threat assessment lags behind the related field of risk assessment. This paper highlights how definitions of threat currently favoured by intelligence agencies are primarily based on threatening entities alone. Consequently, assessments of threat are almost singularly concerned with understanding an identified enemy’s intentions and capabilities. This ‘enemy-centric’ approach to intelligence analysis has recently come in for criticism. Under the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights ("TABOR"), an amendment to the Colorado Constitution, the Colorado state and local governments are severely restricted in the amount of revenue they can collect and in their ability to set fiscal policy. As a result, TABOR has forced the state and local governments to shrink relative to the economy and has prevented legislators and government officials from altering TABOR's more unworkable provisions. In 2009, the Colorado Supreme Court decided Mesa County Board of County Commissioners v. State, in which the court rightfully restored a modicum of legislative discretion over the budgeting and taxation processes. …

Starting in the middle of the nineteenth century, the Netherlands East Indies sought to bring all the people and territory of the Indonesian archipelago under colonial control. In 1873, they turned their attention to the sultanate of Aceh in northern Sumatra, and sent a small invasion force. Throughout the Vietnam War the United States Army's use of assault helicopters was unprecedented in modern warfare. Although planners originally anticipated their utilization on a European battlefield rather than against an insurgency, Army Aviation adapted, allowing them to overcome an uncertain future. Due to the unconventional nature of the conflict, continual revisions in tactics, techniques, and procedures ensured that assault helicopter doctrine was never concrete, but always shifting. Organophosphorus nerve agents are amongst the most deadly chemical compounds ever synthesized. Sarin is an organophosphate (OP) ester that irreversibly forms a phosphoester bond at the active site of acetylcholinesterase and thereby induces a rapid and lethal cholinergic crisis. It remains an active threat to vulnerable civilian populations due to its ease of synthesis and known use by rogue nations and terrorist groups. Death is the most extreme consequence of sarin toxicity. Current treatments fail to provide protection against progressive cognitive impairments years after mild exposure. Q-VD-OPh is an in-vivo caspase inhibitor with potent anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory properties. In this …

Sarin, a lethal chemical nerve agent, may be a causative factor in multifactorial syndrome implicated in the Gulf War and Tokyo terrorist attacks. While high dose results in seizure and death, low dose exposure may lead to autonomic imbalance and chronic cardiac pathologies. In the present study, echocardiography and electrocardiography were used to examine the late onset effects of a low dose sarin on cardiac structure and function in mice. Stress responsiveness of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis was also tested. This is an ethnographic study of Italian Ultras, the organized and ritualized fan organizations associated with professional soccer in Italy. It examines the relationship between their belief and behaviors, paying particular attention to their political behaviors. The study follows 15 months of anthropological fieldwork undertaken in Rome, Italy. Its goal is to assess the role that the Ultras' particular critical understanding of modernity plays in organizing and actualizing their behaviors inside and outside of sporting contexts. Technology is growing exponentially, and there is no time to waste for organizations in designing and implementing a creative climate strategy. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB) and organizational climates that promote creativity. By collecting data from working undergraduate and MBA students (N=201), multiple significant positive relationships were found between several of the dimensions making up both of these constructs. The results of this study show that employee perceptions of creative climates are moderately related to pro-social behaviors. In the post-Soviet era, libraries in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia have faced increasing budgetary challenges. In response to socioeconomic restructuring and the introduction of private enterprise, libraries have been forced to seek alternatives to commercial publishing and licensing models. This paper will assess the status of the open access movement and of Internet filtering controls in the countries of the South Caucasus. Cluster munitions have been a significant weapon in the world's arsenals for the last half-century, but their use has drawn sharp criticism for its impact on civilian populations. The weapons function by releasing dozens of small "bomblets" over a wide area. For years the debate over these weapons was focused on whether they violated the norms of international humanitarian law, but the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions has altered the discussion, banning the weapons outright.
