“O Brave New World”: Service-Learning And Shakespeare, Matthew C. Hansen
“O Brave New World”: Service-Learning And Shakespeare, Matthew C. Hansen
English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations
Community-engaged learning is a rising feature of a wide variety of higher education institutions, from community colleges to private liberal arts colleges to large public universities. Everyone, it seems, is getting in on the act, and as a result, the amount of scholarship published on service-learning continues to multiply. There remains, however, curiously little scholarship published on the intersection of service-learning and literary studies. Almost no published scholarship exists on how courses on Shakespeare – a staple of nearly every college English department – might engage with the community through service-learning that provides a genuine community benefit while simultaneously deepening …

2011-12 Series - Convergence Of Cultures, University Center For The Humanities
University Center for the Humanities Events
This year the University Center for the Humanities focuses a lens on the contact zones between culture and power to understand the tensions, collaborations, accommodations and conversions that accompany sustained cross-cultural encounters. It considers the intersections of ethnicity, language, religion, politics, science and culture and the innovative and creative human products of that interaction. The lecture series is designed to contest stereotypes of difference and expand the understanding of complex social dynamics.

Detection Of Naegleria Species In Environmental Samples From Peninsular Malaysia, I. Ithoi, A.F. Ahmad, V. Nissapatorn, Y.L. Lau, R. Mahmud, J.W. Mak
Detection Of Naegleria Species In Environmental Samples From Peninsular Malaysia, I. Ithoi, A.F. Ahmad, V. Nissapatorn, Y.L. Lau, R. Mahmud, J.W. Mak
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
BACKGROUND: In Malaysia, researchers and medical practitioners are unfamiliar with Naegleria infections. Thus little is known about the existence of pathogenic Naegleria fowleri, and the resultant primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is seldom included in the differential diagnosis of central nervous system infections. This study was conducted to detect the presence of Naegleria species in various environmental samples. METHODS/FINDINGS: A total of 41 Naegleria-like isolates were isolated from water and dust samples. All these isolates were subjected to PCR using two primer sets designed from the ITS1-ITS2 regions. The N. fowleri species-specific primer set failed to produce the expected amplicon. The …

In The Midst Of Organizational Change: A Survey Of Employee Perceptions Toward Separate Accreditation For Regional Campuses At The University Of South Florida, Rhonda S. Moraca
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify how employees in the University of South Florida System (USF System) perceived changes in their organizations and the system as a result of having separate accreditation for each campus in the USF System. This survey research provided a "snapshot" of employee perceptions at a particular point in time. The study was unique because it provided a picture of the perceptions of employees while each campus was at a different point in the organizational change process. The theoretical concept from Bolman and Deal's (2003) four frame theory was used to develop the dependent …
The Memory Of Forgotten Things, Brittany Metz
The Memory Of Forgotten Things, Brittany Metz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates my lack of childhood memories and documents how my artwork stands in as a substitute for that lost memory. The first part of the thesis analyzes my early life and influences; the second part analyzes my art making and process. The narrative style of writing is intentionally autobiographical to mimic the narrative style and structure of the thesis installation. My upbringing, interests, creative process, access to materials, and inspiration are fully explored. The impact my early life has on my current work is evident. Real memory is combined with created memory in the thesis multi-media installation. I …
The Individual Behind The Image Female Idols In Their Various Forms, Patricia Lois Nuss
The Individual Behind The Image Female Idols In Their Various Forms, Patricia Lois Nuss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The research investigated the artistic and photographic processes corresponding with two studies motivated by the artist's personal history and focused on the role, affect, and history of various female idols represented in art history, religion, and modern American popular media. The first part of the study documented female models as they were simultaneously asked by the artist to think of a range of personal but nonspecific moments from her life, the women were asked not to share their thoughts, only the moment spent thinking, with the artist. The second part of the study documented aspiring models as they awoke during …
Charles Cullis, Gaetano Conte, And The Reconfiguration Of The Evangelical Holiness Movement In Boston, 1860-1905, Benjamin Hartley
Charles Cullis, Gaetano Conte, And The Reconfiguration Of The Evangelical Holiness Movement In Boston, 1860-1905, Benjamin Hartley
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "In contrast to the presenters before and after me, my presentation focuses on the lives of two individuals rather than one. Charles Cullis (1833-1892) and Gaetano Conte (1859-1917) both represent a kind of “new beginning” for some sectors of Protestant religion in Boston and thus fit particularly well into our panel’s attempt to explore the somewhat paradoxical theme of “strangers in a strange land” of New England. I’ve chosen these two figures because of their influence in re-shaping the evangelical movement in Boston and their relative obscurity in spite of the fame they both shared during their own day. …
The Second Front: The Internal Struggle For Post-Colonial Power In French Indochina And Algeria, Alexander Ludlow Cochran
The Second Front: The Internal Struggle For Post-Colonial Power In French Indochina And Algeria, Alexander Ludlow Cochran
Honors Theses
This thesis details events that occurred prior to, and during the French-Indochina War of 1946-1952 and the French-Algerian War of 1954-1962. In order to provide greater historical context to my area of study, I extensively researched the history of each nation in the 20*'^ Century. I utilized a variety of sources, including primary sources and secondary sources. My method of research involved the taking of copious notes, and synthesizing the information into a coherent argument and thesis. In the case studies of both Indochina and Algeria, I will provide pertinent background information about events leading up to the colonial war, …
Appealing To The Middlebrow Reader: Changes Made To Richard Wright's Black Boy, Donald R. Hatcher
Appealing To The Middlebrow Reader: Changes Made To Richard Wright's Black Boy, Donald R. Hatcher
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis focuses on Richard Wright's autobiography Black Boy (American Hunger) A Record of Childhood and Youth. The book's original format underwent a couple of major changes in order to be accepted by The Book-of-the-Month Club, which were the elimination of the entire second half dealing with Wright's time in the North and the rewriting of the end of the first half in order to give closure to the shortened book. In my thesis, I will discuss these changes in detail and explain how these changes undermined Wright's original intentions. Furthermore, I will show how The Book-of-the-Month- Club's influence affected …

Digital Reconstruction Of Fragmented Glass Plate Photographs: The Case Of Archaeological Photography, Filippo Stanco, Davide Tanasi, Giovanni Gallo
Digital Reconstruction Of Fragmented Glass Plate Photographs: The Case Of Archaeological Photography, Filippo Stanco, Davide Tanasi, Giovanni Gallo
History Faculty Publications
A recent digitalization project of the textual and iconographical fund of Department of Archaeology Library of the Catania University, one of the largest and oldest among Italian academies, presented the challenging problem of the iconographical resources on glass plates coated by silver halide. The Library has an archive of about 3,000 glass plates. Several of these are damaged and fractured. Acquisition of these images with a scanner or with a digital camera, after a manual recomposing of the sherds, leaves badly visible gaps and fracture lines. This happens because of an uncorrect alignment of the fragments or for the lost …
