Re-Envisioning Reproduction: Dividing Life From Death In Charles Etienne’S De La Dissection, Miranda Mollendorf

Quidditas

Charles Estienne’s De la Dissection des parties du corps humain (1546) presents the uterus not only as a site of generation and life, but also putrefaction and death. Estienne first writes about the uterus as a surgical site where life and death converge and must be separated, and then as an anatomical site where pain and pleasure are divided because of Galenic theories about the uterus that involve generation and corruption. In spite of frequent attempts to visually quarantine the uterus from the rest of the body with a printed inset, these surgical and anatomical separations between life and death …

Condemning The Decisions Of The Past: Eminent Domain And Democratic Accountability, Christopher Serkin

This Essay argues that there is a seldom-recognized purpose to eminent domain: preserving the ability of elected representatives to respond to the will of the people. The author proposes that eminent domain allows government to depart from the policy choices of administrations which came before and is therefore a tool for acquiring "democratic legitimacy." He explores this theory by examining examples such as breaking up the adult use zones in Times Square and reclaiming New York's waterfront, which had been essentially cut off by highways.

A Chinese exile in the United States, H. T. Tsiang (1899-1971) wrote several books in English that represent pioneer works in the canon of Asian American literature. Following the principle of nalai zhuyi, or strategic appropriation from other writers, Tsiang created a new, hybridized literature by reworking formal and thematic elements from classical and contemporary Chinese literature, the proletarian works of 1920s and 1930s America, and western classics like the plays of William Shakespeare. Although few know his work today, Tsiang is one of the earliest and most prolific innovators of Asian American literature, anticipating some of the appropriative methods, …

The focus of this project has been compiling a collection of music about mountaintop removal coal mining and the history of coal mining in Southern Appalachia. The songs are ballads, folk, bluegrass, and old time songs of the past and present. Some songs already focused on this important environmental and social justice issue, and others were changed lyrically to encompass this subject. The practice of changing lyrics to suit a new cause has been common in the history of folk music in America. Universal Design Theory states that, as much as possible, experiences should be equivalent for those with and without disabilities (NC State University, The Center for Universal Design, 1997). However, the Principles of Universal Design Theory are still being explored as to the possibility of making equivalent entertainment experiences. Carl Orff�s Schulwerk, along with much of his compositional work, started as an exploration into the most primitive, elemental roots of music. In this thesis, I explore the natural, active music making experience developed by Orff, Dorothee Gunther, and Gunild Keetman. Through movement, improvisation, play, composition, and collective performance, music-making through the Schulwerk incorporates musical knowledge into a piece/performance, and creates an effective ensemble through active listening and collaboration. Because of its adaptability, the Schulwerk is an appropriate approach to music learning at any age, even in the 21st century. This thesis examines the circumstances surrounding Konstantin Stanislavsky�s development of the Stanislavsky System of actor-training throughout the early twentieth-century, and subsequently attempts to trace popular misunderstandings of the System in twenty-first century American consciousness, with the intention of dispelling such misunderstanding. It then attempts to continue the work of creating a holistic interpretation of the Stanislavsky�s technique through further engagement with the System from theoretical and practical perspectives for the purpose of advocating further readings of the System.

This thesis explores the connection between the grotesque play, or esperpento, of Ram�n Mar�a de Valle-Incl�n (1866-1936) and the series of 80 aquatint etchings, Los Caprichos, made by Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) by comparing twenty-four of the eighty Caprichos in Goya's series to the three esperpentos, Divinas Palabras (1920), Luces de Bohemia (1920-1), and Los Cuernos de don Friolera (1924). In order to solidify the connection between these two artists' work, this thesis first offers a discussion of certain concepts, such as the artist as a Creator, and terminology, such as the capricho and the grotesque. All eleven comedies to survive complete from thechorus leaders and characters consistently represent dramatic poetry as a medium for education rather than a medium for nonsense. Aristophanes represents the comedian alongside the tragedian as a serious and efficacious artist. Classical Period of Athenian dramatic poetry are ascribed to one poet, Aristophanes. The generic tropes of his work include abusive satire of real persons and events, fantastic plots set in contemporaneous circumstances, and an abundance of scatological imagery and sexual innuendo. This thesis challenges stereotypes of dolphins by presenting them in a manner that is contradictory to mainstream representations of animals as graceful, joyous and free. Through experience volunteering at Mote Marine Laboratory and interning at Dolphins Plus in Key Largo, Florida, I have come to understand that stereotypes offer an incomplete idealized image of dolphins.The art for this thesis shows dolphins in a large-scale, fragmented format with an anthropomorphic gaze that confronts the viewer. The negative space delineated from the fragmentation creates a grid system of bars or windows which pushes the question, who is in captivity: the dolphin or …

Over time, the British monarchyhas evolved from being the primary agent of government to a national cultural figurehead. The most drastic moment change occurred during the reigns of King William IV and Queen Victoria. It is during this period that the republican and revolutionary ideals circulated Europe and caused the British monarchy to have to adapt in order to retain their position. This study examines the influence that German spouses had on the monarchy during that time using primarily letters and journals of the time. James Chandler in England in 1819: the Politics Of Literary Culture and the Case of Romantic Historicism says that the second-generation Romantic writers were in essence historicist. According to Chandler, the literary work of England in 1819 is concerned with its own historical self-representation. Romantic writers can be regarded as fashioning the history by which they must be understood. Chandler regards Romanticism as a crucial period because despite the relatively short span of years to which it is usually assigned (1790-1830), close attention has been paid to its literary activity (3). It was not until 1920, 72 years after the birth of the suffrage movement, that Massachusetts women gained the right to vote. While other state suffrage associations succeeded in persuading their governments to pass laws securing the vote for women, Massachusetts reformers were met with an overwhelming amount of resistance. The forces behind much of this resistance were the white, middle-class women active in small cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth. Women in support, as well as in opposition, to suffrage in Massachusetts at the turn-of-the twentieth century were the same women swept up in the changing gender roles of …

In this article we analyze what happens when undergraduate students are positioned as pedagogical consultants in a faculty development program. Drawing on their spoken and written perspectives, and using the classical anthropological concept of liminality, we illustrate how these student consultants revise their relationships with their teachers and their responsibilities within their learning. These revisions have the potential to transform deep-seated societal understandings of education based on traditional hierarchies and teacher/student distinctions.
