The Fate Of The Davao Penal Colony #502 "Branch" Of The Lds Church, 1944, David L. Clark, Bart J. Kowallis

BYU Studies Quarterly

On September 7, 1944, 668 American POWs were killed when the unmarked Japanese ship in which they were being transported was hit by friendly fire. Among those POWs were several members of an unofficial LDS "branch" that had formed in a penal colony near Davao, on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The branch of POWs had contraband scriptures and a hymnbook and met together weekly. This article tells as much of their story as has come to light: who they were, their service, and their capture. The article ends with a discussion of the theological implications of their …

Design And Implementation Of An Open Framework For Ubiquitous Carbon Footprint Calculator Applications, Farzana Rahman, Casey O'Brien, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, He Zhang, Lin Liu

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

As climate change is becoming an important global issue, more and more people are beginning to pay attention to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To measure personal or household carbon dioxide emission, there are already plenty of carbon footprint calculators available on the web. Most of these calculators use quantitative models to estimate carbon emission caused by a user's activities. Although these calculators can promote public awareness regarding carbon emission due to an individual's behavior, there are concerns about the consistency and transparency of these existing CO2 calculators. Apart from a small group of smart phone based carbon footprint calculator …

Crisis Of Governance And Urban Violence In Nigeria, Akeem Ayofe Akinwale, Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This paper examines the crisis of governance and urban violence in Nigeria, using a documentary technique with an analysis of several theories including the Frustration and Aggression Theory, the Social Disorganization Theory, the Social Control Theory and Ecological Theory. It is argued that the outbreaks of violence have become unprecedented across the Nigerian cities, while successive attempts at promoting peace in the country are yet to succeed significantly. This situation is examined in the light of the dynamics of political instability and its concomitant outcomes. Several dimensions of urban violence including ethno-religious violence, electoral violence, youth militancy, and civil unrest …

Studies On Power Hop Using A Nonlinear Model Of An Agricultural Tractor, Adam B. Flaugh Dec 2011

Studies On Power Hop Using A Nonlinear Model Of An Agricultural Tractor, Adam B. Flaugh

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Power hop is an unstable dynamic phenomenon that is observed on agricultural tractors operating at field working speeds under typical draft loads. This dynamic instability can be identified as a bounce motion preceded by an increasing oscillation in either the pitch or bounce modes. A definite and comprehensive correction or prevention strategy for the control of power hop does not exist. In this work a linear and a nonlinear model of an agricultural tractor were developed. The method of multiple time scales has been employed in the analysis of the nonlinear model. Numerical results have been obtained using Mathematica to …

Analyzing The Evolution Of Private Security Guards And Their Limitations To Security Management In Nigeria, Kasali Monsuru Adegboyega Dec 2011

Analyzing The Evolution Of Private Security Guards And Their Limitations To Security Management In Nigeria, Kasali Monsuru Adegboyega

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

The origin of the proliferation of private security companies (guards) in Nigeria can be traced to the systemic failure and inefficiency that adorn the public security sector, which exhibits blatant inability to meet the security needs of the people resulting from her agelong anti-people posture, inadequate training, official corruption, nepotism among other negativities. Indeed, the complementary roles being played by private security guards in mitigating the security challenges confronting the nation have been seen by many as a welcome development. In spite of the successes recorded, yet there exist some obstacles that undermine private security guards‟ operations in Nigeria. In …

United States Aid To Kenya: A Study On Regional Security And Counterterrorism Assistance Before And After 9/11, Samuel L. Aronson Dec 2011

United States Aid To Kenya: A Study On Regional Security And Counterterrorism Assistance Before And After 9/11, Samuel L. Aronson

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Following 9/11 and the beginning of the global War on Terror, it became obvious that the United States needed an ally in East Africa. Kenya, a country that has remained relatively stable while surrounded by regional insecurities, was chosen by the U.S. as an African ally to which large sums of aid and resources would be sent. United States assistance to Kenya is largely given for developmental and humanitarian purposes but millions of dollars each year are directed specifically towards regional security and anti-terrorism. This observational paper highlights the differences in U.S. aid to Kenya before and after 2001. Using …

This paper identifies the connection between effective criminal investigations and the efficiency of criminal justice administration in Nigeria. It further examines the challenges of criminal investigations and concludes with suggestions for improving criminal investigative activities. Eight challenges of criminal investigations were identified and examined. These challenges are: the low crime reporting culture of the public, paucity of police funding, corruption, inadequate training of police officers in criminal investigations, delayed duplication of investigation case files, missing investigation case files, lack of forensic science facilities and experts; and poor public records keeping. The suggestions proffered for improving criminal investigation activities focus on …

Toward The Adaptive Governance Of Transboundary Water Resources, Kofi Akamani, Patrick Impero Wilson Dec 2011

Toward The Adaptive Governance Of Transboundary Water Resources, Kofi Akamani, Patrick Impero Wilson

Forestry Articles

Transboundary water resources, such as international river basins, pose complex and often contentious management challenges. In response to the failures associated with the state-centric approach to the governance of international waters, discussions on transboundary water resources governance over the last two decades or so have focused largely on public involvement. The need to build resilience into such governance systems has been virtually overlooked. Based on a conceptualization of transboundary water resources as complex social-ecological systems, the manuscript proposes adaptive governance as a unifying framework for informing policies aimed at promoting the conservation of transboundary water resources in an increasingly unpredictable …

Sprouty2 Deficiency In Mice Leads To The Development Of Achalasia, Benjamin Lee Staal Dec 2011

Sprouty2 Deficiency In Mice Leads To The Development Of Achalasia, Benjamin Lee Staal

Masters Theses

Sprouty 2 (Spry2), one of the four mammalian Spry family members, is a negative feedback regulator of many receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) signaling including Met. It fine-tunes RTKs signaling through multiple levels of regulations starting from RTK itself to several downstream molecules that are crucial for signal transduction. To understand what role Spry2 might play during developmental processes, we created a Spry2 conventional knockout mouse in which Spry2 expression is replaced by enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) reporter. Spry2 appears to be expressed in mouse embryo and in many adult tissues, and Spry2- deficient mice have smaller body size and …

The Competitive Response Of Panicum Virgatum Cultivars To Non-Native Invasive Species In Southern Illinois, Lauren Michele Schwartz Dec 2011

The Competitive Response Of Panicum Virgatum Cultivars To Non-Native Invasive Species In Southern Illinois, Lauren Michele Schwartz

Theses

Historically, the tallgrass prairie (TGP) was the largest ecosystem in North America, but today only about 10-15% of the original extent exists today. Some areas have experienced more extreme loss, for example in the state of Illinois less than 0.01% of high-quality native tallgrass prairie remains. Non-native invasive species are a recent phenomenon that threatens the integrity of surviving TGP communities. Ecotypes of dominant C4 grasses are the basis of numerous cultivars, many of which are utilized in prairie restorations. In this study, the effects of three invasive species (Bromus inermis, Schedonorus phoenix, and Poa pratensis) on two lowland (`Alamo' …

The Role Of Cell Sterilization In Population Based Studies Of Radiogenic Second Cancers Following Radiation Therapy, Annelise Giebeler Dec 2011

The Role Of Cell Sterilization In Population Based Studies Of Radiogenic Second Cancers Following Radiation Therapy, Annelise Giebeler

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Advances in radiotherapy have generated increased interest in comparative studies of treatment techniques and their effectiveness. In this respect, pediatric patients are of specific interest because of their sensitivity to radiation induced second cancers. However, due to the rarity of childhood cancers and the long latency of second cancers, large sample sizes are unavailable for the epidemiological study of contemporary radiotherapy treatments. Additionally, when specific treatments are considered, such as proton therapy, sample sizes are further reduced due to the rareness of such treatments. We propose a method to improve statistical power in micro clinical trials. Specifically, we use a …

Change Detection Memory In Rhesus Monkeys And Humans, Lauren C. Elmore Dec 2011

Change Detection Memory In Rhesus Monkeys And Humans, Lauren C. Elmore

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) is the storage of visual information over a brief time period (usually a few seconds or less). Over the past decade, the most popular task for studying VSTM in humans has been the change detection task. In this task, subjects must remember several visual items per trial in order to identify a change following a brief delay interval. Results from change detection tasks have shown that VSTM is limited; humans are only able to accurately hold a few visual items in mind over a brief delay. However, there has been much debate in regard to the …

Modelling Β2ar Regulation, Sharat J. Vayttaden Dec 2011

Modelling Β2ar Regulation, Sharat J. Vayttaden

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

The β2 adrenergic receptor (β2AR) regulates smooth muscle relaxation in the vasculature and airways. Long- and Short-acting β-agonists (LABAs/SABAs) are widely used in treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and asthma. Despite their widespread clinical use we do not understand well the dominant β2AR regulatory pathways that are stimulated during therapy and bring about tachyphylaxis, which is the loss of drug effects. Thus, an understanding of how the β2AR responds to various β-agonists is crucial to their rational use. Towards that end we have developed deterministic models that explore the mechanism of drug- induced β2AR regulation. These mathematical models …

Assessment Of Acculturation: Issues And Overview Of Measures, Ozgur Celenk, Fons J.R. Van De Vijver Dec 2011

Assessment Of Acculturation: Issues And Overview Of Measures, Ozgur Celenk, Fons J.R. Van De Vijver

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Publicly available acculturation measures are systematically reviewed based on three criteria: scale descriptors (name of the scale, authors, year, target group, age group, subscales, and number of items), psychometric properties (reliabilities) and conceptual and theoretical structure (acculturation conditions, acculturation orientations, acculturation outcomes, acculturation attitudes, acculturation behaviors, conceptual model and life domains). Majority of the reviewed acculturation measures are short, single-scale instruments that are directed to specific target groups. Additionally, they mainly assess behavioral acculturation outcomes than acculturation conditions and orientations. Regarding the psychometric properties; most measures have an adequate internal consistency; yet cross-cultural validity of the instruments have not been …

The Role Of Family Experiences And Adhd In The Early Development Of Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Elizabeth Harvey, Lindsay A. Metcalfe, Sharonne D. Herbert, John H. Fanton

Elizabeth (Lisa) Harvey

Objective—The present study examined the role of family experiences in the early development and maintenance of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms in preschool aged children with behavior problems. Method—Participants were 199 3-year-old children with behavior problems who took part in four annual child and family assessments. Results—Children with behavior problems who were exposed to overreactive parenting practices, maternal depression, marital conflict, and lower family income tended to have more ODD symptoms 3 years later. Moreover, initial changes in paternal overreactivity, and changes in maternal depression corresponded to initial changes in ODD symptoms. Children who met criteria for ADHD at age …

Welfare Enhancing Regulation Exemptions, Murat C. Mungan Dec 2011

Welfare Enhancing Regulation Exemptions, Murat C. Mungan

Scholarly Publications

Sanctions for regulation violations are used to deter conduct which could potentially result in great social harms. This practice over-deters talented entities and under-deters untalented entities, which leads to social losses. This paper analyzes whether and how such social losses can be mitigated. I show that this can be achieved by allowing regulatees to purchase passes exempting them from regulations at appropriate prices.

Why Was China Trapped In An Agrarian Society? An Economic Geographical Approach To The Needham Puzzle [Post-Print], Guanzhong James Wen Dec 2011

Why Was China Trapped In An Agrarian Society? An Economic Geographical Approach To The Needham Puzzle [Post-Print], Guanzhong James Wen

Faculty Scholarship

This paper argues that before the world started to globalize, the differences in the geographical endowments that different populations faced were the most important constraints to their long-term production and consumption. The paper uses this central hypothesis to explain the sharp contrast between the flourishing Song and the stagnant Ming and Qing. During the Song dynasty, despite the fact that China lost a significant amount of arable land to invading nomads as its population peaked, China witnessed a higher urbanization level, more prosperous commerce and international trade, and an explosion of technical inventions and institutional innovations. However, after having significantly …

Synthesis And Computational Studies On Hiv-1 Integrase Inhibitors, Horrick Sharma Dec 2011

Synthesis And Computational Studies On Hiv-1 Integrase Inhibitors, Horrick Sharma

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

HIV-1 integrase (IN) is essential for viral replication and offers a promising target for the development of anti-retroviral drugs. Two decades of extensive research has lead to the recent approval of raltegravir as the first IN inhibitor. Advancement of drug candidate elvitegravir, which is currently in Phase III clinical trial, has furthermore accelerated efforts against this potential target for combating HIV. However, the emergence of resistance against raltegravir and elvitegravir demands exploration of novel chemical scaffolds that could circumvent resistance against currently used HIV-1 IN inhibitors. With the goal of discovering new agents targeting HIV, a novel structural class of …

Autoimmune Consequences Of Histone Deimination During Neutrophil Activation, Nishant Dwivedi Dec 2011

Autoimmune Consequences Of Histone Deimination During Neutrophil Activation, Nishant Dwivedi

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Tolerance blocks the expression of autoantibodies, whereas autoimmunity promotes it. How tolerance breaks and autoantibody production begins, thus, are crucial questions for the understanding and treatment of autoimmune diseases. Evidence implicates cell death and autoantigen modifications in the initiation of autoimmune reactions. One form of neutrophil cell death deserves attention because it occurs as a consequence of neutrophil activation, requires the post-translational modification of histones and results in the extracellular release of chromatin. The extracellular chromatin incorporates histones in which arginines have been converted to citrullines by peptidylarginine deiminase IV (PAD4) creating structures that capture or "trap" bacterial pathogens. Neutrophil …

A Stochastic Version Of The Em Algorithm To Analyze Multivariate Skew-Normal Data With Missing Responses, M. Khounsiavash, M. Ganjali, T. Baghfalaki Dec 2011

A Stochastic Version Of The Em Algorithm To Analyze Multivariate Skew-Normal Data With Missing Responses, M. Khounsiavash, M. Ganjali, T. Baghfalaki

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper an algorithm called SEM, which is a stochastic version of the EM algorithm, is used to analyze multivariate skew-normal data with intermittent missing values. Also, a multivariate selection model framework for modeling of both missing and response mechanisms is formulated. By the SEM algorithm missing values of responses are inputed by the conditional distribution of missing values given observed data and then the log-likelihood of the pseudocomplete data is maximized. The algorithm is iterated until convergence of parameter estimates. Results of an application are also reported where a Bootstrap approach is used to compute the standard error …

The Power Series Solution Of Fingering Phenomenon Arising In Fluid Flow Through Homogeneous Porous Media, Kinjal Patel, M. N. Mehta, Twinkle R. Patel

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The present paper deals with the approximate solution of the fingering phenomenon occurring when water is pushed into oil in homogeneous porous media with capillary mean pressure. The phenomenon is formulated mathematically as a water-oil double phase flow problem. The solution of the nonlinear partial differential equation of fingering phenomenon has been discussed in terms of the power series using appropriate boundary conditions for any timeT>0 . The solution is in ascending power series which represents saturation of injected fluid in fingering phenomenon & its graphical and numerical presentation is given in MATLAB coding.

A Group Acceptance Sampling Plans For Lifetimes Following A Marshall-Olkin Extended Exponential Distribution, G. S. Rao Dec 2011

A Group Acceptance Sampling Plans For Lifetimes Following A Marshall-Olkin Extended Exponential Distribution, G. S. Rao

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a group acceptance sampling plan is developed for a truncated life test when the lifetime of an item follows the Marshall-Olkin extended exponential distribution. The minimum number of groups required for a given group size and the acceptance number is determined when the consumer’s risk and the test termination time are specified. The operating characteristic values, according to various quality levels, are found and the minimum ratios of the true average life to the specified life at the specified producer’s risk are obtained. The results are explained with examples.
