Teaching Intrapersonal Intelligence As A Lawyering Skill: Introducing Values Systems Into The Environmental Law Syllabus, Michael Burger
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
The ranges and types of problems with traditional law school curricula, pedagogies, and learning cultures are well-rehearsed, and have been framed, narrated, and analyzed in a number of prominent venues, along with suggested improvements and proposals for systemic reform. This Essay addresses one aspect of the ongoing and pervasive critique: the need to develop in law students the diverse intellectual competencies that the practice of law requires. Working within the framework of Professor Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, I argue that intrapersonal intelligence and the self-reflexive analytic process it invokes are important tools in the practicing lawyer’s toolbox, and …

Online Health Social Networks And Patient Health Decision Behavior: A Research Agenda, Corey Allen Heidelberger, Omar F. El-Gayar, Surendra Sarnikar
Research & Publications
Patients and health care practitioners alike are using the Internet and specifically online health social networks to gain access to knowledge and social support that they could not obtain as quickly or efficiently from their traditional face-to-face social networks. Given concerns about the quality of information available on the Internet and the differences between social interaction online and offline, it is important to determine whether this new phenomenon influences health decision behavior. We propose a framework for investigating the influence online health social networks may have on the health decisions that patients and their physicians make. We also propose a …

Increasing Research Relevance In Dss: Looking Forward By Reflecting On 40 Years Of Progress, Karen Vizecky, Omar F. El-Gayar
Research & Publications
Decision Support Systems (DSS) is a field that has made rapid progress in establishing itself and maturing into seven key sub-fields. However, there are continued concerns about the relevancy and growing disconnect between academic contributions and professional applications of DSS. This paper serves to review the existing literature, and propose a Research Relevance Framework meant to serve as a guideline to ensure future DSS research has a consistent standard upon which relevance can be assessed.
How Does Leadership Affect Information Systems Success? The Role Of Transformational Leadership, Jeewon Cho, Insu Park, John W. Michel
How Does Leadership Affect Information Systems Success? The Role Of Transformational Leadership, Jeewon Cho, Insu Park, John W. Michel
Research & Publications
We examined the positive impact of transformational leadership on IS success in organizations via two psychological mechanisms of system users’—perceived organizational support and systems self-efficacy. Our conceptual model was assessed using a sample of 251 employees from a multi-national bank in Korea. Overall, our results supported the hypothesized relationships: transformational leadership was positively related to system users’ IS success, and both perceived organizational support and systems self-efficacy of the system users mediated the relationship between transformational leadership and IS success. The results call for manager’s attention to the importance of transformational leadership development in organizations.

Beyond Meaningful Use: A Model For Evaluating Electronic Health Record Success, Matthew J. Wills, Omar F. El-Gayar, Surendra Sarnikar
Research & Publications
This paper presents a conceptual model for the evaluation of electronic health records. The model is grounded in IS models for evaluating system success and task-technology fit, and integrates concepts of meaningful use and outcome research to arrive at a holistic conceptualization of evaluating the success of EHR. The paper presents numerous issues and challenges to the practice of health care outcomes research, and offers practical solutions for overcoming them.

The Surgeon General's report, “Culture, Race, and Ethnicity: A Supplement to Mental Health,” points to the need for subgroup specific mental health research that explores the cultural variation and heterogeneity of the Latino population. Guided by cognitive anthropological theories of culture, we utilized ethnographic interviewing techniques to explore cultural models of depression among foreign-born Mexican (), Cuban (), Columbian (), and island-born Puerto Ricans (), who represent the largest Latino groups in Florida. Results indicate that Colombian, Cuban, Mexican, and Puerto Rican immigrants showed strong intragroup consensus in their models of depression causality, symptoms, and treatment. We found more agreement …

Background
Patients receiving complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies often report shifts in well-being that go beyond resolution of the original presenting symptoms. We undertook a research program to develop and evaluate a patient-centered outcome measure to assess the multidimensional impacts of CAM therapies, utilizing a novel mixed methods approach that relied upon techniques from the fields of anthropology and psychometrics. This tool would have broad applicability, both for CAM practitioners to measure shifts in patients' states following treatments, and conventional clinical trial researchers needing validated outcome measures. The US Food and Drug Administration has highlighted the importance of valid …

Controlling Sexually Violent Predators: Continued Incarceration At What Cost?, Tamara Rice Lave
Articles
Sexually violent predator (SVP) laws are inherently suspicious because they continue to incarcerate people not because of what they have done, but because of what they might do. I focus on three major criticisms of the laws. First, I use recent recidivism data to challenge the core motivation for the SVP laws-that sex offenders are monsters who cannot control themselves. Second, I situate the laws theoretically as examples of what Feeley and Simon call the "new penology." I argue that the SVP laws show the limited promise of the new penology—that we can use science to predict risk accurately--because the …
