Nonverbal Communication Among Pointe Coupee Creoles, Elsie Angelique Bergeron Gardner
Nonverbal Communication Among Pointe Coupee Creoles, Elsie Angelique Bergeron Gardner
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Interactions are understood through the filter of language and culture. Because of this when people of different cultures interact, miscommunications often result. As both verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication are culturally specific, this paper examines trends in the nonverbal communication patterns of generations of Pointe Coupee Creoles undergoing language shift from Creole French in the older generation to English in the younger. The data demonstrate that nonverbal patterns are decoupled from verbal language to some extent in the degree to which they are maintained down the observable generations of Pointe Coupee Creole participants. This study analyzes videos of naturally …
Playing Class: A Case Study Of Ludic Pedagogy, Jessica Broussard
Playing Class: A Case Study Of Ludic Pedagogy, Jessica Broussard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of transforming traditional classroom content and teaching strategy into a "gamified" version through the use of popular gaming strategy, or, in other words, how a college course can be designed or redesigned to mimic ludic pedagogy, as well as the influence of this pedagogy on student performance in understanding course content and course assessments. The researcher acted as a participant observer and used Constant Comparative Method as data driven teaching focused on student created documents. This research provides an exploration on the use of ludicly styled teaching methodology which includes …

The Ecology Of Congeneric Resprouters And Reseeders (Hypericum Spp.) Along Fire-Frequented Pine Savanna Ecoclines, Raelene Marie Crandall
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Resprouting and reseeding shrubs are predicted to be restricted to habitats with long and short return intervals of natural disturbances, respectively. Nonetheless, resprouters and reseeders co-occur along Gulf of Mexico coastal ecoclines where lightning-ignited fires were historically frequent. In this collection of studies, I examine fire responses, habitat associations, distribution limits, and seedling recruitment of Hypericum species along ecoclines in pine savannas of the St. Joe Bay State Buffer Preserve in Gulf County of Florida. In this area, ecoclines are characterized by topographic, soil moisture, and fire heterogeneity gradients. Hypericum microsepalum, an obligate resprouter, primarily resprouts following disturbances that …
A Biomimic Self-Healing Shape Memory Polymer Based Syntactic Foam For Smart Structural Composites, Jones Nji
A Biomimic Self-Healing Shape Memory Polymer Based Syntactic Foam For Smart Structural Composites, Jones Nji
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study explored the development of a new self-healing Polystyrene Shape Memory Polymer (PSMP) based syntactic foam for service life extension in structural polymeric composites. The objective was to self-heal structural-length scale damage in an autonomous, efficient, timely and repeatable manner at the molecular-length scale. Self-healing is achieved through a novel two step close-then-heal (CTH) self-healing scheme, designed to mimic the natural biological process of wound healing in humans. A new methodology to fabricate three-dimensional (3-D) fiber reinforced shape memory polymer syntactic foam for structural applications was developed. The effect of impact energy on the ability for the 3-D fiber …

Analytical Design Method For Cold Production Of Heavy Oil With Bottom Water Using Bilateral Sink Wells, Wenting Qin
Analytical Design Method For Cold Production Of Heavy Oil With Bottom Water Using Bilateral Sink Wells, Wenting Qin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Few heavy oil reservoirs with strong bottom water drives have been developed successfully because of severe water coning. Water coning tends to cause low ultimate recovery, low well productivity, and high water production. Although thermal and gravity-assisted methods might improve recovery in oil reservoirs, such methods are widely perceived as either economically unfavorable or technologically infeasible. This study proposes a new, cold production technique, called Bilateral Water Sink (BWS), to meet those challenges. The BWS method suppresses water cresting by producing oil and water simultaneously from separate, horizontal wells completed in the oil and water zones; the oil and water …
Dyadic Meta-Accuracy In Leader-Member Exchanges: An Examination Of Antecedents And Relational Outcomes, Jared A. Ledoux
Dyadic Meta-Accuracy In Leader-Member Exchanges: An Examination Of Antecedents And Relational Outcomes, Jared A. Ledoux
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Work organizations are inherently social entities, dependent upon the social interactions between supervisors and subordinates. This study examined the role of interpersonal processes within organizational settings, focusing upon subordinates‟ accuracy in judging their supervisors‟ impressions of the subordinates‟ personality. This phenomenon, dyadic meta-accuracy, is examined within exchange relationships between supervisors and subordinates, drawing upon Leader Member Exchange (LMX) theory and the metaperception literature. A theoretical framework proposed potential antecedents of subordinate meta-accuracy, including: communication frequency, physical proximity, psychological closeness, and trait visibility. In addition, subordinate meta-accuracy was proposed as a determinant of the relational quality between subordinate and supervisor and …
An African American Discourse Community In Black & White: The New Orleans Tribune, Kristi Richard Melancon
An African American Discourse Community In Black & White: The New Orleans Tribune, Kristi Richard Melancon
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In An African American Discourse Community in Black & White: The New Orleans Tribune, an archival study of the first black-owned daily newspaper in the United States, I argue that the newspaper rhetorically constructed a literate African American discourse community worthy of citizenship and equal political rights within the public sphere of Reconstruction United States. Although contemporaneous media in the South depicted blacks as both unable to read and write and as culturally illiterate, I demonstrate how articles across the lifespan of the Tribune represented, as well as encouraged and enabled, multiple literacies within the African American community. I ultimately …
Silicon Nanowire Anode For Lithium-Ion Batteries: Fabrication, Characterization And Solid Electrolyte Interphase, Wanli Xu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Depletion of fossil fuels and concerns over CO2 emission have driven the development of electric vehicles (EVs) with high-energy efficiencies and low emissions. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, compared to lead acid, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydroxide, and other popular rechargeable batteries, are considered as the most promising candidates for EVs for their high operating voltage and high energy density. Silicon nanowires are considered as lithium-ion battery anodes for their ultra high capacity at 4200 mAh·g-1 (10× higher than conventional graphite anode), as well as stress accommodation for reversible lithiation and delithiation. Silicon nanowires were fabricated via metal assisted electroless etching, and …
Writing William Burroughs, Performing The Archive, John Lebret
Writing William Burroughs, Performing The Archive, John Lebret
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Between 1958 and 1972, author William S. Burroughs undertook a series of radical experiments with alternative compositional modes based on the aleatory form of the Cut-up. Burroughs sold the entirety of his work from the period, assembled into an archive, to a collector in 1972. This study uses performative writing to document a year of archival research in Burroughs' collection, currently housed by The Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature at the New York Public Library. Melding Bakhtin's theories of the chronotope and the grotesque body with creative writing and experimental modes of scholarly …
Crime In New Orleans: Applying The Civic Community Perspective To Urban Violence, Jessica M. Doucet
Crime In New Orleans: Applying The Civic Community Perspective To Urban Violence, Jessica M. Doucet
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Civic community theory is a macro-level social control perspective that has emerged within the past 10 years as an explanation of community variation in crime rates. The theory is based on the assumption that well-integrated communities are better able to regulate their members’ behaviors than poorly integrated communities. It has been particularly successful in explaining violent crime rates in rural counties or communities, but research has generally ignored the relationship between civic community theory and violent crime in urban areas. The current study aims to determine the applicability of the civic community perspective to urban areas, as a link has …
The Effect Of Habitat Change On Nutrient Removal In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Amy E. Scaroni
The Effect Of Habitat Change On Nutrient Removal In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Amy E. Scaroni
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers are the major sources of freshwater and nutrients to the Gulf of Mexico. Increased nutrient loads from these rivers exacerbate eutrophication in coastal receiving waters and contribute to the large area of hypoxia that develops seasonally in the Gulf. Levees along the Mississippi River have reduced contact between the river and the historic floodplain; this limits the ability of floodplain wetlands to naturally mitigate excess nutrients. However, the Atchafalaya River diverges from the Mississippi 217 km from the Gulf and enters a large river floodplain with a widely spaced levee system. This enhances the ability …
A Performer's Guide To Gwyneth Walker's Settings Of Poetry By Lucille Clifton- No Ordinary Woman! And Three Songs For Lucille, Ebony Darshay Preston
A Performer's Guide To Gwyneth Walker's Settings Of Poetry By Lucille Clifton- No Ordinary Woman! And Three Songs For Lucille, Ebony Darshay Preston
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
No Ordinary Woman! is atypical of Walker’s style in that the composer employs jazz elements as the building blocks for this composition. From ballads to scat singing, each song is representative of a different style of jazz. The cycle, consisting of five songs, explores the poet’s journey of contemplation regarding various aspects of her life, predominantly her physical appearance. In No Ordinary Woman! and Three Songs for Lucille, the poet reflects on and ultimately celebrates her physical appearance. This document contains information about the lives and works of composer Gwyneth Walker and poet Lucille Clifton, the commissions, premieres, compositional processes, …
Hbcu Crises And Best Practices In The Discourse Of Renewal: A Crisis Communication Case Study Of Three Institutions, Erica Courtney Taylor
Hbcu Crises And Best Practices In The Discourse Of Renewal: A Crisis Communication Case Study Of Three Institutions, Erica Courtney Taylor
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Crises have been a part of all societies over the course of time. Leaders of small, primitive societies may have dealt with these crises by directly communicating with their citizens or by taking other hands-on approaches to crisis management and recovery. However, in large post-modern technological societies, leaders must find more efficient ways to handle and recover from crises. This qualitative study examines three crises that occurred at three Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCUs) in the last six years. Crisis communication planning and practices are explored with a special focus on elements of the discourse of renewal theory each …
The Relationship Between Visual Attention And Prospective Memory, Noelle L. Brown
The Relationship Between Visual Attention And Prospective Memory, Noelle L. Brown
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The current study examined the role of attention in prospective memory. Prospective memory refers to the ability to form an intention to do something in the future, such as email a colleague, and additionally remembering to do so at the appropriate moment. Theories of prospective memory retrieval suggest that attention is required to complete an intention. However, the exact role of attention and whether it is always required remains unclear. One challenge in examining the allocation of attentional resources in prospective memory is that a direct measure of these resources does not exist. The current study attempted to address this …
Photochemical Reaction Products Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Adsorbed At An Air-Water Interface, Franz Stefan Ehrenhauser
Photochemical Reaction Products Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Adsorbed At An Air-Water Interface, Franz Stefan Ehrenhauser
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are ubiquitous pollutants resulting from incomplete combustion and hence normally unavoidable. The kinetic aspects of the environmental degradation process have received considerable attention; however, not much is known about the degradation products themselves. Aqueous solutions of naphthalene, acenaphthene, 9H-fluorene, phenanthrene and pyrene were subjected to UVB light in a bulk-phase and a thin-film reactor to assess the identity of the formed photodegradation products. To aide in the challenging analysis of these mixtures, a novel analytical technique based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to UV diode-array detection and dopant-assisted atmospheric pressure photoionization mass …
The Northern Clergy And The Pilgrimage Of Grace, Keith Altazin
The Northern Clergy And The Pilgrimage Of Grace, Keith Altazin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the Pilgrimage of Grace and the Lincolnshire rebellion. Both rebellions occurred in England in 1536 during the reign of Henry VIII. The rebellions were primarily risings of the commons and occurred as the result of several causes. Much of the recent historiography has focused primarily on the causes of the rebellions and the motives of those involved. Most contemporary interpretations of the Pilgrimage of Grace have cast it primarily as either an economic rebellion or a result of social conflict between the commons and gentry. Practically no analysis of the role of the clergy exists, although it …
Development Of A Time-Dependent, Audio-Visual, Stated Choice Method Of Data Collection For Hurricane Evacuation Behavior, Ravindra Gudishala
Development Of A Time-Dependent, Audio-Visual, Stated Choice Method Of Data Collection For Hurricane Evacuation Behavior, Ravindra Gudishala
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Revealed preference is the traditional method to collect hurricane evacuation behavior data. However, revealed preference surveys, as they are currently administered, have the disadvantage that they are unable to collect time-sensitive and policy-sensitive data needed to test evacuation policies. In contrast, data collected from a time-dependent, stated-choice survey will allow researchers to collect not only time-sensitive and policy-sensitive data but also information that will allow testing potential new evacuation policies. However, no research has been conducted to establish the methodology of such a survey. To fill the gap, this study was conducted to develop a new time-dependent, audio-visual, stated-choice method …

Spatio-Temporal Variations In Soil Moisture And Physicochemical Properties Of A Typical Semiarid Sand-Meadow-Desert Landscape As Influenced By Land Use, L. Duan, T. Liu, X. Wang, G. Wang, L. Ma, Y. Luo
Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
A good understanding of the interrelations between land cover alteration and changes in hydrologic conditions (e.g., soil moisture) as well as soil physicochemical properties (e.g., fine soil particles and nutrients) is crucial for maintaining the fragile hydrologic and environmental conditions of semiarid land, such as the Horqin Sandy Land in China, but is lacking in existing literature. The objectives of this study were to examine: (1) spatio-temporal variations of soil moisture and physicochemical properties in semiarid land; and (2) how those variations are influenced by land cover alteration. Using the data collected in a 9.71 km2 well-instrumented area of the …

A magnetoresistive biosensing platform based on a single magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) scanning probe and DNA microarrays labeled with magnetic particles has been developed to provide an inexpensive, sensitive and reliable detection of DNA. The biosensing platform was demonstrated on a DNA microarray assay for quantifying bacteria capable of degrading methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), where concentrations as low as 10 pM were detectable. Synthetic probe bacterial DNA was immobilized on a microarray glass slide surface, hybridized with the 48 base pair long biotinylated target DNA and subsequently incubated with streptavidin-coated 2.8 μm diameter magnetic particles. The biosensing platform then …

Levels-Of-Processing Effects On "Remember" Responses In Recognition For Familiar And Unfamiliar Tunes, Esra Mungan, Zehra F. Peynircioğlu, Andrea R. Halpern
Faculty Journal Articles
We investigated the effect of level-of-processing manipulations on "remember" and "know" responses in episodic melody recognition (Experiments 1 and 2) and how this effect is modulated by item familiarity (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, participants performed 2 conceptual and 2 perceptual orienting tasks while listening to familiar melodies: judging the mood, continuing the tune, tracing the pitch contour, and counting long notes. The conceptual mood task led to higher d' rates for "remember" but not "know" responses. In Experiment 2, participants either judged the mood or counted long notes of tunes with high and low familiarity. A level-of-processing effect emerged …

Private Rights In Public Lands: The Chicago Lakefront, Montgomery Ward, And The Public Dedication Doctrine, Joseph D. Kearney, Thomas W. Merrill
Faculty Scholarship
When one thinks of how the law protects public rights in open spaces, the public trust doctrine comes to mind. This is especially true in Chicago. The modem public trust doctrine was born in the landmark decision in Illinois Central Railroad Co. v. Illinois, growing out of struggles over the use of land along the margin of Lake Michigan in that city. Yet Chicago's premier park – Grant Park, sitting on that land in the center of downtown Chicago – owes its existence to a different legal doctrine. This other doctrine, developed by American courts in the nineteenth century, …
A Softer Formalism, Peter L. Strauss
A Softer Formalism, Peter L. Strauss
Faculty Scholarship
As our colleagues have often remarked, Professor John Manning's and my views have moved much closer to each other since I wrote the piece he graciously uses as the stalking horse for unmitigated functionalism, and he more recently established himself as the scholarly spokesperson for Scalian textualism and formalism.
I greatly admire the moderate and exquisitely informed voice of Separation of Powers as Ordinary Interpretation, which deserves the important influence it will doubtless have. The brief thoughts that follow are to suggest only that (as scholars often enough do) he somewhat exaggerates the characteristics of the schools that he …

Economics Faculty Research and Publications
Objectives: This study investigated the importance of environmental influences in explaining weight gain and related behaviors among freshman college students.
Methods: We exploited a natural experiment that takes place on most college campuses in the United States - randomized dormitory assignments. We estimated the effects of living in dormitories with varying physical environment characteristics on weight gain and related behaviors (daily number of meals and snacks, weekly frequency of exercise) among randomly assigned freshman students.
Results: We found strong evidence linking weight and related behaviors to individual dormitories, as well as to specific characteristics of the dormitories. On average, students …
