Stories Of The Proterozoic Earth: Paleoproterozoic Chuanlinggou Arcitarchs And Neoproterozoic ¹⁷O-Depleted Barite, Yongbo Peng Jan 2011

Stories Of The Proterozoic Earth: Paleoproterozoic Chuanlinggou Arcitarchs And Neoproterozoic ¹⁷O-Depleted Barite, Yongbo Peng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two independent topics, both critical to understanding Earth history during the Proterozoic Eon. (1) Paleoproterozoic Chuanlinggou Acritarchs: The eukaryotic affinity of acritarchs from the Chuanlinggou Formation has been questioned because of lack of indisputable morphological evidence. In this study, Chuanlinggou acritarchs were examined by jointly using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In most cases, an ovoidal group of acritarchs represents a half-vesicle following a complete longitudinal rupture, which is a morphological model different from a whole envelope with medial splits, as proposed by earlier studies. This ovoidal group displays a bipolar morphology, …

Thus, we propose a novel cost effective, scalable, customizable, and autonomous sensor-based robotic system, called SPRAM System (Sensor-based Autonomous Pipeline Monitoring Robotic …

Transnational Spaces And Communal Land Tenure In A Caribbean Place: "Barbuda Is For Barbudans", Amy E. Potter Jan 2011

Transnational Spaces And Communal Land Tenure In A Caribbean Place: "Barbuda Is For Barbudans", Amy E. Potter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the last decade, transnational migration research has gained considerable ground in geography. There is still more to be done, however, in order to understand the complex relationship between migrants and the lands they leave behind. The island of Barbuda in the Lesser Antilles is the ideal place to study the larger issues of transnational migration on a smaller scale, particularly research that focuses on both migration and land tenure. Barbudan land tenure is common property, something that was in practice for more than a century and formalized into law in January of 2008. Because of this particular system of …

We believe that the emergence of online sourcing will fundamentally change the way work is done. Thus, gaining a deep understanding of the adoption of online sourcing becomes particularly important. Drawing upon theories of firms including transaction cost theory, we propose an integrative theoretical framework for the understanding of online sourcing decisions from the service clients’ perspective. …

Exotic Ground States: A Study In The Structural Effects On Frustration And Dimensionality, Melissa C. Menard Jan 2011

Exotic Ground States: A Study In The Structural Effects On Frustration And Dimensionality, Melissa C. Menard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Structural disorder and dimensionality play central roles in the characterization of structure and properties of crystalline materials. Although structural disorder is commonly considered an undesirable quality, structural disorder may be desirable when searching for new materials with exotic properties. Disorder can be used as a tunable parameter when considering atomic sizes, coordination preferences, and electronegativity differences can be varied by substituting elements into a given structure. Dimensionality can be viewed as another adjustable parameter when searching for new materials presenting unique challenges when characterizing new materials. One way to tune dimensionality is by chemical doping to affect coupling between layers/chains. …

Fragmentation Sensitivity And Its Consequences On Demography And Host-Ectoparasite Dynamics In Amazonian Birds, Erik I. Johnson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Amazon rainforest is experiencing rapid deforestation due to ranching, agriculture, and urban development, which often leads to remnant patches serving as refugia for forest organisms. By mist-netting passerines in 11 forest fragments (1-, 10-, and 100-ha patches) and nearby continuous forest at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragmentation Project near Manaus, Brazil, I conducted a series of studies to identify mechanisms that drive population changes in fragmented landscapes. First, I examined the age structure of bird populations from six ecological guilds in fragments and continuous forest. Immatures are the dispersing age group in birds, and their relative abundance in …

Decoupling User Interface Design Using Libraries Of Reusable Components, Rajesh Sankaran Jan 2011

Decoupling User Interface Design Using Libraries Of Reusable Components, Rajesh Sankaran

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The integration of electronic and mechanical hardware, software and interaction design presents a challenging design space for researchers developing physical user interfaces and interactive artifacts. Currently in the academic research community, physical user interfaces and interactive artifacts are predominantly designed and prototyped either as one-off instances from the ground up, or using functionally rich hardware toolkits and prototyping systems. During this prototyping phase, undertaking an integral design of the interface or interactive artifact’s electronic hardware is frequently constraining due to the tight couplings between the different design realms and the typical need for iterations as the design matures. Several current …

"The Colossal Vitality Of His Illusion": The Myth Of The American Dream In The Modern American Novel, James E. Ayers Jan 2011

"The Colossal Vitality Of His Illusion": The Myth Of The American Dream In The Modern American Novel, James E. Ayers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the American dream is a large-scale cultural myth, and that through an analysis of the dream’s mythic structure we can locate a paradigm according to which both American literature and American culture are organized. The American dream has maintained unique relevance across the historical, regional, and cultural diversity of the American nation, in part because it always remains abstract and resists firm definition. Nevertheless, by breaking the broad myth into its most basic elemental parts we can begin to see patterns across the many distinctive versions of the American dream, such that we can identify the …

Next Generation Multi-Scale Quantum Simulations For Strongly Correlated Materials, Shuxiang Yang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis represents our effort to develop the next generation multi-scale quantum simulation methods suitable for strongly-correlated materials, where complicated phase-diagrams prevail, suggesting complicated underlying physics. We first give a detailed description of the parquet formalism. With its help, different approximate methods can be unified and a hierarchy of approximate methods with different accuracies and computational complexity can thus be designed. Next, we present a numerical solution of the parquet approximation. Results on the Hubbard model are compared to those obtained from Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), FLuctuation EXchange (FLEX), and self-consistent second-order approximation methods. The comparison shows a satisfactory …

Identification Of Novel Core And Accessory Factors Involved In Nucleotide Excision Repair In Yeast, Danielle Marie Tatum Jan 2011

Identification Of Novel Core And Accessory Factors Involved In Nucleotide Excision Repair In Yeast, Danielle Marie Tatum

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is a highly conserved DNA repair mechanism which deals with a wide variety of bulky, helix-distorting lesions, such as UV-induced cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs). NER is traditionally grouped into two pathways: global genomic repair (GGR), which is operative throughout the genome, and transcription coupled repair (TCR), which is dedicated to rapid repair of the transcribed strand of actively transcribed genes. Though most of the core NER proteins are known, the exact biochemical mechanism of eukaryotic NER remains elusive. This dissertation focused on identifying novel core and accessory factors which function in NER. In the budding …

Nonverbal Communication Among Pointe Coupee Creoles, Elsie Angelique Bergeron Gardner Jan 2011

Nonverbal Communication Among Pointe Coupee Creoles, Elsie Angelique Bergeron Gardner

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Interactions are understood through the filter of language and culture. Because of this when people of different cultures interact, miscommunications often result. As both verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication are culturally specific, this paper examines trends in the nonverbal communication patterns of generations of Pointe Coupee Creoles undergoing language shift from Creole French in the older generation to English in the younger. The data demonstrate that nonverbal patterns are decoupled from verbal language to some extent in the degree to which they are maintained down the observable generations of Pointe Coupee Creole participants. This study analyzes videos of naturally …

Analytical Design Method For Cold Production Of Heavy Oil With Bottom Water Using Bilateral Sink Wells, Wenting Qin Jan 2011

Analytical Design Method For Cold Production Of Heavy Oil With Bottom Water Using Bilateral Sink Wells, Wenting Qin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Few heavy oil reservoirs with strong bottom water drives have been developed successfully because of severe water coning. Water coning tends to cause low ultimate recovery, low well productivity, and high water production. Although thermal and gravity-assisted methods might improve recovery in oil reservoirs, such methods are widely perceived as either economically unfavorable or technologically infeasible. This study proposes a new, cold production technique, called Bilateral Water Sink (BWS), to meet those challenges. The BWS method suppresses water cresting by producing oil and water simultaneously from separate, horizontal wells completed in the oil and water zones; the oil and water …

Work organizations are inherently social entities, dependent upon the social interactions between supervisors and subordinates. This study examined the role of interpersonal processes within organizational settings, focusing upon subordinates‟ accuracy in judging their supervisors‟ impressions of the subordinates‟ personality. This phenomenon, dyadic meta-accuracy, is examined within exchange relationships between supervisors and subordinates, drawing upon Leader Member Exchange (LMX) theory and the metaperception literature. A theoretical framework proposed potential antecedents of subordinate meta-accuracy, including: communication frequency, physical proximity, psychological closeness, and trait visibility. In addition, subordinate meta-accuracy was proposed as a determinant of the relational quality between subordinate and supervisor and …

An African American Discourse Community In Black & White: The New Orleans Tribune, Kristi Richard Melancon Jan 2011

An African American Discourse Community In Black & White: The New Orleans Tribune, Kristi Richard Melancon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In An African American Discourse Community in Black & White: The New Orleans Tribune, an archival study of the first black-owned daily newspaper in the United States, I argue that the newspaper rhetorically constructed a literate African American discourse community worthy of citizenship and equal political rights within the public sphere of Reconstruction United States. Although contemporaneous media in the South depicted blacks as both unable to read and write and as culturally illiterate, I demonstrate how articles across the lifespan of the Tribune represented, as well as encouraged and enabled, multiple literacies within the African American community. I ultimately …

Crime In New Orleans: Applying The Civic Community Perspective To Urban Violence, Jessica M. Doucet Jan 2011

Crime In New Orleans: Applying The Civic Community Perspective To Urban Violence, Jessica M. Doucet

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Civic community theory is a macro-level social control perspective that has emerged within the past 10 years as an explanation of community variation in crime rates. The theory is based on the assumption that well-integrated communities are better able to regulate their members’ behaviors than poorly integrated communities. It has been particularly successful in explaining violent crime rates in rural counties or communities, but research has generally ignored the relationship between civic community theory and violent crime in urban areas. The current study aims to determine the applicability of the civic community perspective to urban areas, as a link has …

The Effect Of Habitat Change On Nutrient Removal In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Amy E. Scaroni Jan 2011

The Effect Of Habitat Change On Nutrient Removal In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Amy E. Scaroni

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers are the major sources of freshwater and nutrients to the Gulf of Mexico. Increased nutrient loads from these rivers exacerbate eutrophication in coastal receiving waters and contribute to the large area of hypoxia that develops seasonally in the Gulf. Levees along the Mississippi River have reduced contact between the river and the historic floodplain; this limits the ability of floodplain wetlands to naturally mitigate excess nutrients. However, the Atchafalaya River diverges from the Mississippi 217 km from the Gulf and enters a large river floodplain with a widely spaced levee system. This enhances the ability …

Hbcu Crises And Best Practices In The Discourse Of Renewal: A Crisis Communication Case Study Of Three Institutions, Erica Courtney Taylor

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Crises have been a part of all societies over the course of time. Leaders of small, primitive societies may have dealt with these crises by directly communicating with their citizens or by taking other hands-on approaches to crisis management and recovery. However, in large post-modern technological societies, leaders must find more efficient ways to handle and recover from crises. This qualitative study examines three crises that occurred at three Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCUs) in the last six years. Crisis communication planning and practices are explored with a special focus on elements of the discourse of renewal theory each …

The Relationship Between Visual Attention And Prospective Memory, Noelle L. Brown Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Visual Attention And Prospective Memory, Noelle L. Brown

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The current study examined the role of attention in prospective memory. Prospective memory refers to the ability to form an intention to do something in the future, such as email a colleague, and additionally remembering to do so at the appropriate moment. Theories of prospective memory retrieval suggest that attention is required to complete an intention. However, the exact role of attention and whether it is always required remains unclear. One challenge in examining the allocation of attentional resources in prospective memory is that a direct measure of these resources does not exist. The current study attempted to address this …
