Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Amyloidosis is defined as the extracellular deposition of fibrillar proteins in different organs and tissues. The clinical features of amyloidosis include cardiomyopathy, hepatomegaly, proteinuria, macroglossia, and dysphagia. We report the case of a 52-year-old man with myeloma-associated amyloidosis who complained of progressive dysphagia, dysarthria, and macroglossia. Videofluoroscopic swallowing study revealed severe reduction in tongue movements, aspiration after swallowing, and retention in the valleculae and pyriform sinuses. The patient underwent swallowing therapy for 6 months; the therapy included compensatory neck flexion, vocal cord adduction exercises, supraglottic swallow, and the Mendelsohn maneuver. The swallowing therapy enabled the patient to swallow liquid and …

Acute Paraplegia After Spinal Manipulation: A Casereport, Kao-Chih Chen, Yao-Jen Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This is a casereport about a 53-year-old female patient with a history of chronic back pain, suffered from complete paraplegia shortly after spinal manipulation. CT and MRI images consistently showed ossification of the ligamenta flava in conjunction with bilateral facet joints hypertrophy at the T10-11, T11-12 and L1-2 levels. Spinal cord injury with T12 paraplegia ASIA-A was thus diagnosed. Posterior laminectomy at the T10, T11, L1 and L2 levels and interbody fusion from T10 to L2 spines for fixation were performed. After rehabilitation, the patient regained some activities of daily living despite complete paraplegia. To raise public awareness, our report …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

A 37-year-old female had an occlusion of right middle cerebral artery (MCA) due to traumatic internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection without significant neck injury after a traffic accident. Although this phenomenon has been documented in recent studies, it remains a relatively rare event. She presented with a left shoulder abrasion injury and mild neck pain initially, although there was no direct head injury or loss of consciousness after the traffic accident. After 12 hours, she had developed confusion, weakness over left limbs and slurred speech. A hyperdense area on the right frontotemporoparietal lobes was found on magnetic resonance imaging (diffusion-weighted …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Numerous serotonergic drugs have been increasingly used in recent years to treat depression, pain, insomnia and obesity. However, concomitant use of these drugs may cause serotonin syndrome. The three main clinical features of serotonin syndrome are neuromuscular abnormalities, autonomic hyperactivity, and mental status changes. A wide variety of the clinical presentations range from: very mild symptoms such as tremor, diarrhea, muscle rigidity, or clonus, and hyperreflexia; to fatal consequences such as disseminated intravascular coagulation or multiple-organ failure. Symptoms resolve spontaneously after prompt discontinuation of the precipitating medication. The diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, history of medication, and resolution after …

Stimulated Creation Of Quanta During Inflation And The Observable Universe, Ivan Agullo, Leonard Parker Dec 2011

Stimulated Creation Of Quanta During Inflation And The Observable Universe, Ivan Agullo, Leonard Parker

Faculty Publications

Inflation provides a natural mechanism to account for the origin of cosmic structures. The generation of primordial inhomogeneities during inflation can be understood via the spontaneous creation of quanta from the vacuum. We show that when the corresponding stimulated creation of quanta is considered, the characteristics of the state of the universe at the onset of inflation are not diluted by the inflationary expansion and can be imprinted in the spectrum of primordial inhomogeneities. The non-gaussianities (particularly in the so-called squeezed configuration) in the cosmic microwave background and galaxy distribution can then tell us about the state of the universe …

World Maritime University Dissertations

Some plants, when transported to non-endemic areas undergo reproduction and rapid growth and will out-compete native plants and become weeds. These weeds then become troublesome giving rise to socioeconomic and environmental impacts. Water hyacinth (Eicchornia crassipes), one of such weeds is often considered the world’s worst invasive aquatic species of weed, indigenous to the Amazon Basin of South America and has spread over the years to various areas in Africa and Asia. This dissertation analyses the problem of water hyacinth infestation in the Wouri River Basin, done through the quantification of its socio-economic and environmental impacts on riparian communities. Cookbooks: Preserving Jewish Tradition, Daniel Feinberg, Alice Crosetto Dec 2011

Cookbooks: Preserving Jewish Tradition, Daniel Feinberg, Alice Crosetto

Library Presentations & Publications

Culinary traditions have played an integral role in the Jewish religion from its very beginning. Families have continually passed down these traditions from one generation to the next as a means to preserve Jewish culture as well as to maintain their Jewish identity. The authors propose that one of the methods of preserving and transmitting these culinary traditions, traditions clearly rooted in oral tradition, has been through the cookbook. While the written cookbook continues to be popular and marketable, traditional cookbook contents are becoming increasingly available online. In saving recipes for future generations, cookbooks preserve religious, cultural, and traditional elements …

Barriers To Women's Access To Justice In Haiti, Meena Jagannath Dec 2011

Barriers To Women's Access To Justice In Haiti, Meena Jagannath

City University of New York Law Review

While gender-based violence is not a new phenomenon in Haiti, the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 earthquake further exposed the vulnerability of Haitian women and girls to gender-based violence and the limited possibilities for women to evince a judicial response to gender-specific violations of the law. Drawing from the experiences of Haitian lawyers and women’s rights advocates, this paper will examine women’s barriers to accessing justice in Haiti by drawing on actual examples of gender-based violence at each step of the investigatory process under the Haitian justice system. It will provide, by way of background, an overview of the …

An Irrational Oversight: Applying The Plra's Fee Restrictions To Collateral Prisoner Litigation, Walker Newell Dec 2011

An Irrational Oversight: Applying The Plra's Fee Restrictions To Collateral Prisoner Litigation, Walker Newell

City University of New York Law Review

The Federal Prison Litigation Reform Act precludes prisoners from filing lawsuits in forma pauperis and imposes significant limitations on the recovery of attorney’s fees. Many states have followed the lead of Congress by prohibiting their courts from waiving filing fees in prisoner cases. The federal fee provisions have withstood a barrage of constitutional challenges, with courts uniformly holding that the provisions are rationally related to a legitimate government interest in deterring frivolous inmate litigation. Many courts, however, apply these fee restrictions in a manner that cannot be justified by the analysis generally supporting the constitutionality of the provisions. In both …

The Image Of Ireland In Iberian Galicia In The Early Twentieth Century, Anne Maccarthy

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "The Image of Ireland in Iberian Galicia in the Early Twentieth Century," Anne MacCarthy explores Galician intellectuals' relationship with Ireland in their attempt to create a Celtic imaginary for Galicia which would act as a cultural fortification in the face of centralizing forces of Castilian Spain. In periodicals prominent in the 1920s, Nós and A Nosa Terra, the wish to construct a separate identity for Galicia, apart from Spain, is often expressed and embodied in reference to Ireland. Whereas the interest in Ireland was increased by the struggle for independence in that country at the time, …
