Italian Militants And Migrants And The Language Of Solidarity In The Early-Twentieth-Century Western Coalfields, Stephen Brier, Ferdinando Fasce

Publications and Research

This article uses the life and experiences of an Italian immigrant and labor militant, Carlo Demolli, to examine a range of issues, including: the intersection of ethnic and national identity and labor militancy and solidarity in the organizing efforts of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) among the ethnically diverse workforce of coal miners in the American West at the turn of the 20th century; the role of a "language of solidarity" as expressed in an Italian language version of the UMW Journal, Il Lavoratore Italiano, in sustaining a militant Italian immigrant workforce in the coal mines; and the …

This paper presents a musical instrument, which uses in vitro neuronal networks to synthesise sounds. Cultures of dissociated neurons are grown on a dish with an embedded rectangular array of electrodes (MEA). Isolated neurons reconnect with one another via an extensive network of synaptically connected projections to form a dense monolayer of neurons. Cultures are provided with stimulation, which influences their activity, and can modify the culture’s state. The core of the sound synthesis engine of our musical instrument is a monophonic additive synthesizer using sinusoidal oscillators. We devised a method to generate frequencies, phase and amplitude values for the …

Propofol And Children--What We Know And What We Do Not Know., Ae Rigby-Jones, Jr Sneyd Jan 2011

Propofol And Children--What We Know And What We Do Not Know., Ae Rigby-Jones, Jr Sneyd

Peninsula Medical School

The pharmacokinetics of propofol are relatively well described in the pediatric population. Recent work has confirmed the validity of allometric scaling for predicting propofol disposition across different species and for describing pediatric ontogenesis. In the first year of life, allometric models require adjustment to reflect ontogeny of maturation. Pharmacodynamic data for propofol in children are scarcer, because of practical difficulties in data collection and the limitations of currently available depth of anesthesia monitors for pediatric use. Hence, questions relating to the comparative sensitivity of children to propofol, and differences in time to peak effect relative to adults, remain unanswered. K(eo) …

Designing Clinical Trials In Older People., C. B. Carroll, J. P. Zajicek Jan 2011

Designing Clinical Trials In Older People., C. B. Carroll, J. P. Zajicek

Peninsula Medical School

Adequate medical care of the increasingly ageing population requires robust clinical trial data both to inform treatment decisions, and to understand the natural history of diseases which primarily affect the elderly. However, this information is widely lacking, which is likely to have significant clinical consequences. Under-representation of older people in clinical trials is well documented, the reasons including physicians' perception, protocol eligibility criteria, and functional status requirements. Many clinical trial designs remain conservative and there is no established standardised methodology for recruiting more elderly patients with co-morbidities and disability into clinical trials. Designing clinical trials in older people poses a …

Longitudinal Evaluation Of The Impact Of Placement Development Teams On Student Support In Clinical Practice., Graham R. Williamson, Lynne Callaghan, Emma Whittlesea, Lauren Mutton, Val Heath

School of Nursing and Midwifery

AIMS: To investigate the impact of a new structure for supporting healthcare students and mentors in practice placements (Placement Development Teams). INTRODUCTION: The English Model National Partnership Agreement for healthcare education required Strategic Health Authorities, Higher Education Institutions and National Health Service Trusts to redesign strategies for student support. Placement Development Teams are one English University's response to this. MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY: This study was phase 2 of a longitudinal qualitative evaluation of Placement Development Teams. Data were collected after establishment of Placement Development Teams, and compared and contrasted with those collected prior to their implementation. Telephone interviews were conducted …

Influences On Hispanic Student Success At The Community College, Pierre Karin Lynn St. Jan 2011

Influences On Hispanic Student Success At The Community College, Pierre Karin Lynn St.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this study was to identify and understand Hispanic students' perceptions of the influences on their success at a community college. Using a qualitative design, six students were interviewed in depth in order to gain insight and perspective of their educational experience at the community college. The investigation explored each student's decision to enroll at the community college and sought to describe factors that the participants identified as having impacted their experiences at the community college, including their perceptions of themselves and their families. The study also explored the programs and practices that are in place in the …

Evaluating The Use Of Enterprise To Create Synergies Between Graduate Skills Development, Career Management And Successful Induction, Ross Pomeroy, Rebecca Turner, Claire Gray, Marc Lintern, J Goering, Julie Swain

Plymouth Business School

We planned an evaluative study into the use of the entrepreneurial visual planning tool ‘XING’ in the ‘FLUX’ competition format (Working Knowledge, 2011) during induction week at a University of Plymouth Colleges (UPC) Partner. This college is one of 18 working in partnership with the University to provide Higher Education (HE), primarily in the form of Foundation Degrees (FDs), in a Further Education (FE) environment. Foundations degrees were designed to bring together academic and vocational experiences by building on the principles of employer engagement and work-based learning. Entry to HE has been acknowledged as a stressful time for undergraduates as …

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown Jan 2011

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Science fiction has long been a site in which utopian-dystopian visions have been articulated. This paper uses one exemplar of this genre as a springboard into a discussion of the desire for a return to origin and of flawed attempts to impose an image of that origin, with discursions into illustrations drawn from contemporary conditions. In opposition to the hegemonic and reductive tendencies inherent in such attempts, this paper proposes an alternative which engages with the everyday reality of life. Intrinsic to this proposition is that our traditions and utopias must be founded upon a continual (re)making in the everyday.

Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani Jan 2011

Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This article in its essence aims to challenge and unfold, each at a time, two different fields of methodology – cybernetics and phenomenology – that have direct effects on the product of being and the process of becoming in architectural discourse. Furthermore, this article suggests a third way philosophy for architecture that relates notions of post-phenomenology and technoscience, and considers both to be equally vital to development and speculation within current architectural discourse. First, the history of each of the two fields – cybernetics and phenomenology – will be unveiled with a focus on exploring their impact upon architecture in …

An Exploration And Analysis Of The Evolving Bank Corporate Governance Practices In Egypt: A Grounded Theory Approach, Mohamed Karim Sorour

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis investigates the phenomenon of corporate governance in the Egyptian banking sector (EBS); it aims to understand the nature of corporate governance in this context and identify the factors shaping it. Especially that these aspects had been ignored by the literature. Through grounded theory methodology, an empirical study of the nature of corporate governance in the EBS is undertaken, it identifies the factors affecting corporate governance in the EBS, the interests corporate governance is serving and as such outline the model of corporate governance prevailing in the EBS. Grounded theory methodology is illustrated by the thesis in the following …
