Evaluating Suspended Dust Particulate Matter From Anthropogenically - Altered Lands, Roberto Velarde Jan 2011

Evaluating Suspended Dust Particulate Matter From Anthropogenically - Altered Lands, Roberto Velarde

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Substantial dust loads are transported from drylands including the Saharan, Asian, and Chihuahuan Desert deposits by localized to planetary-scale processes to nearby and distal sites. These dusts may carry harmful constituents. To evaluate dust movement patterns and characteristics relative to carried constituents, three studies are presented comprising (A) Localized displacement of uranium and progeny radionuclides from high-grade uranium ore storage piles at Peña Blanca, Chihuahua, Mexico; (B) Long-distance transport of plutonium via Saharan and Asian aeolian pathways; and (C) Dust movement patterns in military maneuvering and non-maneuvering areas at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), New Mexico. Study (A) evaluated surface …

Transferability Of Child Labor Norms: Examining The Link Between Foreign Direct Investment And Child Labor Practices In Developing Countries, Ijtsuri Anayantzin Viveros Jan 2011

Transferability Of Child Labor Norms: Examining The Link Between Foreign Direct Investment And Child Labor Practices In Developing Countries, Ijtsuri Anayantzin Viveros

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Why do child labor norms often fail to be transferred or enforced in developing countries even if the implementation of such norms already proved to have substantially reduced child labor practices in developed regions? In the field of international political economy, a number of studies examine how international trade in general and foreign direct investment (FDI, hereafter) in particular influence economic growth, income equality, and balance of trade in developed and developing countries. Extending the literature on international trade and investment, this thesis examines the relationship between FDI and child labor practices in developing countries.

Specifically, I investigate whether and …

Novel Photovoltaic Device For Targeted Drug Delivery, Sunny S. Ambure Jan 2011

Novel Photovoltaic Device For Targeted Drug Delivery, Sunny S. Ambure

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Despite decades of research, progress in targeted drug delivery is relatively slow, hampered, in part, by the lack of appropriate mechanisms to deliver anticancer drugs selectively to tumor tissues. Systemic or oral administration can cause severe toxicity, which limits the therapeutic potential of anticancer drugs [1]. Therefore, the most important goal of drug delivery is to minimize the exposure of normal tissues to these drugs while maintaining their therapeutic concentration in tumors.

A photovoltaic cell (PV) is a system that converts lights into electricity as well as induces charge transfer by photovoltaic effect. Motivated by such unique property, we have …

The Effects Of Tai Chi On Balance And Peripheral Somatosensation In Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Elisabeth Inge Cavegn Jan 2011

The Effects Of Tai Chi On Balance And Peripheral Somatosensation In Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Elisabeth Inge Cavegn

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in older adults is a major health concern, as older adults with diabetes have a two- to threefold risk of injurious falls and physical disability. Although studies on the effects of Tai Chi on balance and fall prevention have increased over the last two decades, the benefits for older adults with diabetes, specifically for those with impaired somatosensation in the lower extremities, are limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Tai Chi exercise on balance, peripheral somatosensation, and fitness in older adults with type 2 diabetes. The …

An Empirical Analysis Of Gasoline Demand In Mexico Using Cointegration Techniques, Mario Elizalde Jan 2011

An Empirical Analysis Of Gasoline Demand In Mexico Using Cointegration Techniques, Mario Elizalde

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Economic expansion in Mexico has caused fuel consumption in Mexico to increase. Because Mexico does not have sufficient refinery capacity, over 40 percent of total gasoline consumed is imported. This has implications for the balance of payments. In this paper, gasoline demand is empirically examined using co-integration and error correction approaches. Results show no evidence of long-run equilibrium in the Mexican gasoline market. This is potentially attributable to the regulatory regime that governs energy markets in Mexico. Regulated price adjustments that are not consistent with prevailing market conditions run the risk of misallocating resources. Permitting greater flexibility in private gasoline …

A Third-Order Non-Oscillatory Finite-Volume Transport Scheme For Atmospheric Modeling, Kiran Kumar Katta Jan 2011

A Third-Order Non-Oscillatory Finite-Volume Transport Scheme For Atmospheric Modeling, Kiran Kumar Katta

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Atmospheric numerical modeling has been going through drastic changes over the past decade, mainly to utilize the massive computing capability of the petascale systems. This obliges the modelers to develop grid systems and numerical algorithms that facilitate exceptional level of scalability on these systems. The numerical algorithms that can address these challenges should have the local properties such as the high on-processor operation count and minimum parallel communication i.e. high parallel efficiency, it should also satisfy the following properties such as inherent local and global conservation, high-order accuracy, geometric flexibility, non-oscillatory advection, positivity preservation.

In the present work, A Third-order …

A Comparative Study Of Bankruptcy As Bailout, Stephanie Ben-Ishai, Stephen J. Lubben Jan 2011

A Comparative Study Of Bankruptcy As Bailout, Stephanie Ben-Ishai, Stephen J. Lubben

All Papers

In this article, using a comparative approach (Canadian versus American and automotive versus financial sectors), we build on the defense of the Chapter 11 automotive cases that one of us has already put forward elsewhere. That is, the Chrysler and GM cases did not subvert normal Chapter 11 practice. Rather, we argue that the automotive cases are a good case study of how governments can provide money to a failing but significant industry in a consistent and transparent manner. This article is not about whether governments should fund failing industries. Rather, we argue that once such a decision has been …

Strategic Research Planning In A Law School Setting, Lisa Philipps Jan 2011

Strategic Research Planning In A Law School Setting, Lisa Philipps

All Papers

Strategic planning processes are by now familiar in many Universities and law faculties. Most often these operate at the highest level of generality and are aimed at articulating an institution’s overall strengths, direction and priorities for growth or improvement. The tools of strategic planning can also be deployed to focus attention on a specific dimension of a law school’s profile such as its research mission. This short paper will describe the effort to develop a strategic research plan at Osgoode Hall Law School, and will share experience about the challenges and potential benefits of such an enterprise.

A Perspective From Honduras' Civil Society Truth Commission, Craig Scott Jan 2011

A Perspective From Honduras' Civil Society Truth Commission, Craig Scott

All Papers

The present document formed the basis for a presentation by the author to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the House of Commons of Canada during a March 9, 2011, hearing on the situation in Honduras. After referencing the June 28, 2009, coup d’ état in Honduras, the author describes how the post-coup political situation led to the creation of two commissions – a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Comisión de la Verdad y de Reconciliación, or CVR) given its mandate to investigate the “crisis” of June 28, 2009, by the current holder of the Honduran Presidency, …

International Civil Service Ethics, Professionalism And The Rule Of Law, Lorne Sossin, Vasuda Sinha Jan 2011

International Civil Service Ethics, Professionalism And The Rule Of Law, Lorne Sossin, Vasuda Sinha

All Papers

While the idea of public service independence and its relationship to the rule of law has received significant recognition in the Canadian context, it raises the question of whether an analogous set of ethical norms operate at the international level, in settings such as the United Nations and its agencies, the European Commission and other settings of multilateral governance. Is an independent, global or multilateral public service a necessary precondition for an international rule of law? By what mechanisms does the operation of bureaucracy in multilateral governance strengthen (or erode) the international rule of law?In this brief paper, we examine …

The Prisoners' Dilemma Posed By Free Trade Agreements: Can Open Access Provisions Provide An Escape?, Meredith Kolsky Lewis Jan 2011

The Prisoners' Dilemma Posed By Free Trade Agreements: Can Open Access Provisions Provide An Escape?, Meredith Kolsky Lewis

Journal Articles

This article explains why free trade agreements (FTAs) that are not compliant with the spirit of GATT Article XXIV’s requirement that such agreements cover “substantially all the trade” between the parties pose serious challenges for the multilateral trading system. It notes the paradoxical behavior of WTO members in continuing to negotiate such free trade agreements to the detriment of the WTO. It characterizes this paradox as a form of Prisoners’ Dilemma, in that although members would be better off pursuing trade liberalization via the WTO, their dominant strategy is to pursue FTAs. The article goes on to propose a pragmatic …

Adaptability Of Academic Advising Teams In Higher Education, Leigh A. Mcfarland Jan 2011

Adaptability Of Academic Advising Teams In Higher Education, Leigh A. Mcfarland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this single site case study was to identify how four advising teams in a medium-sized public university adapt to the changes presented to them and what role leadership and culture play in that adaptation. This was accomplished through analysis of advisor and administrator interviews, office and meeting observations, and reviews of documents relating to advising and university changes in curriculum and systems. The study was guided by team culture and the five core adaptation strategies described by Eckel and Kezar (2003). The study indicates that although part of the same institution, each advising team has a unique …

Anatomy And Physiology Of The Elasmobranch Olfactory System, Tricia L. Meredith Jan 2011

Anatomy And Physiology Of The Elasmobranch Olfactory System, Tricia L. Meredith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The olfactory system is the most highly developed system for molecular sensing in vertebrates. Despite their reputation for being particularly olfactory driven, little is known about how this sense functions in elasmobranch fishes. The goal of this dissertation was to examine the morphology and physiology of elasmobranchs to compare their olfactory system with teleost fishes and more derived vertebrates. To test the hypotheses that elasmobranchs possess greater olfactory sensitivities than teleosts and that lamellar surface area is correlated to sensitivity, I compared the surface area of the olfactory lamellae and the olfactory sensitivities of five phylogenetically diverse elasmobranch species. The …

Anticarcinogenic Effects Of Genistein And Anthocyanin Extract In Mcf-7 Human Breast Cancer Cells, Corine M. Stinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study investigated potential apoptotic and anti-proliferative effects of the phytochemicals, genistein and anthocyanin extract, as single and combined treatments in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. Cells were exposed to single and combined treatments with the phytochemiclas for 48 and 72 hours. Cell viability was assessed using the MTT bioassay. Apoptosis induction was assessed using acridine orange ethidium bromide and rhodamine 123 ethidium bromide fluorescence assays. Both singe and combination treatments induced dose- and time-dependent apoptotic cell death in MCF-7 cells. The percentage of apoptosis was higher in combination treatments than single treatments with either phytochemical, although the difference was …

Aquatic Phobias Permeated Through African American Culture, Economics, And Politics, Jon Eric Groover Jan 2011

Aquatic Phobias Permeated Through African American Culture, Economics, And Politics, Jon Eric Groover

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This Project involves looking at African American culture as it relates to swimming, water safety awareness, and water skills. The paper explores the myths and cultural norms associated with drowning phobias in African Americans to discover the root causes. Through historic accounts of African American culture one begins to uncover reasons why this culture became, in a sense aqua phobic. The paper will show what water sport professionals are up against, when working with a culture that is several generations removed from the water and their water skills. The ultimate goal is to draw attention to the importance of water …

Behavior Patterns In Florida's Middle Archaic, Kassandra. Nelson Jan 2011

Behavior Patterns In Florida's Middle Archaic, Kassandra. Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines activity induced articular facets and osteoarthritis in the ankle and foot complex of an Archaic hunter-gatherer population from the Gauthier (8BR-193) mortuary complex. To determine the frequency at which these characteristics occur, I scored the tibiae, tali, proximal phalanges, and metatarsals of adults and juveniles using methods developed by Buikstra and Ubelaker (1994) for scoring osteoarthritis and a synthesis of methods developed by Barnett (1954), and Boulle (2001a; 2001b), Buikstra and Ubelaker (1994). Molleson (1989), Ubelaker (1979), for scoring articular facets. Despite significant skeletal fragmentation observed, articular facets were remarkbly complete, allowing for analysis of joint degeneration. …

Cultural And Spatial Perceptions Of Miami's Little Havana, Hilton A. Cordoba Jan 2011

Cultural And Spatial Perceptions Of Miami's Little Havana, Hilton A. Cordoba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Miami's "Little Havana" is known by many for its famous Southwest 8th Street, the Calle Ocho festival, and for the many Latin people, particularly Cubans, that live in the area. However, the current name of the neighborhood hides all of the dynamics of neighborhood change and creates the notion that Little Havana is a static monoculture neighborhood. This study measured people's perception of Little Havana by surveying 153 residents to identify the cultural associations and to capture the participant's spatial perceptions of Little Havana. This study found that survey participants from inside the study area associated Little Havana more with …

Deep-Fried Harmony, Scott H. Lebowitz Jan 2011

Deep-Fried Harmony, Scott H. Lebowitz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Scholars of southern Jewish history maintain that ante-bellum southerners displayed genuine philo-Semitism towards their Jewish neighbors. Historians attribute this to the southern Jews "effort to assimilate into southern society and to the presence of other, more preferred, targets of the southerners" animus, namely blacks and Catholics. This analysis, however, is not sufficiently broad to explain the South's Protestant-Jewish dynamic. It neither appraises the relationship from the perspective of the Protestants, nor accounts for the intellectual inconsistencies such a conclusion presents regarding both Protestants and southerners, generally. This thesis identifies and responds to these shortcomings by examining southern philo-Semitism through the …

Derivation Of Planar Diffeomorphisms From Hamiltonians With A Kick, Zalmond C. Barney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this thesis we will discuss connections between Hamiltonian systems with a periodic kick and planar diffeomorphisms. After a brief overview of Hamiltonian theory we will focus, as an example, on derivations of the Hâenon map that can be obtained by considering kicked Hamiltonian systems. We will conclude with examples of Hâenon maps of interest.

Drawing Meaning, Jillian. Taylor Jan 2011

Drawing Meaning, Jillian. Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

With the commitment of a nineteenth century objectivist scientist, I established a rigorous methodology in my studio practice through drawing, cutting and sorting that asserts meticulous attention to and recording of detail. This resulted in an overwhelming accumulation of components - pieces of information that no longer functioned to create the "whole." Interested in how information adds up to meaning, I am preoccupied with sorting out meaning from my accumulations. With each work, I create a map that works less to mark a destination than to structure a journey. No longer "lost" in the details, these accumulated works effect a …
