Digital Preservation And Spatial Representation At The Washington Square Mound Site (41na49), Nacogdoches County, Texas, Robert Z. Selden Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Thirty-one years of excavations at the Washington Square Mound site (41NA49) have produced a large number of artifacts, excavation records, field notes, photographs, slides, maps, excavation profiles, and plan view maps. This article is the product of an effort to synthesize the aforementioned information for the initial field school which occurred in the summer of 1979. Through the use of geographic information systems (GIS), a digital grid was constructed atop aerial photography to house the digitized information within a spatial representation of the provenience from which it was recovered. This allows a query of the artifact catalog to produce the …

Community Singing As Troubled Learning: Exploring Musical, Social, And Ethical Dimensions Of Safety And Risk Among Adult Singers, Deanna Yerichuk Jan 2011

Community Singing As Troubled Learning: Exploring Musical, Social, And Ethical Dimensions Of Safety And Risk Among Adult Singers, Deanna Yerichuk

Music Faculty Publications

How are safety and risk negotiated within community singing? Many group facilitation techniques within adult education take as foundational that participants must feel safe to participate fully in group learning. This concern for participants safety acknowledges that power and privilege circulate unequally within any social learning context, shaped by race, gender, class, ability, sexual orientation, and in the case of singing, musical competencies. However, community singing can be safe without being comfortable. Comfort, therefore, is not the same as safety, although the two concepts are often conflated. A lack of ease with the process and/or content suggests a possibility of …

The Functions Of Music-Listening Across Cultures: The Development Of A Scale Measuring Personal, Social And Cultural Functions Of Music, Diana Boer, Ronald Fischer, Jimena De Garay Hernández, Ma. Luisa González Atilano, Luz Moreno, Marcus Roth, Markus Zenger Jan 2011

The Functions Of Music-Listening Across Cultures: The Development Of A Scale Measuring Personal, Social And Cultural Functions Of Music, Diana Boer, Ronald Fischer, Jimena De Garay Hernández, Ma. Luisa González Atilano, Luz Moreno, Marcus Roth, Markus Zenger

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

We examined the functions of music-listening from a cross-cultural perspective. Two studies were conducted to capture personal, social and cultural experiences with music. Young people were sampled; mainly online surveys were used. Study 1 is a qualitative multicultural study that identified seven main functions of music: background, memories, diversion, emotion, self-regulation, reflection of self, and social bonding. In study 2, based on the qualitative data, we developed and validated a scale measuring Ratings of Experienced Social, PErsonal and Cultural Themes of MUSIC functions (RESPECT-MUSIC) in three cultural samples (Latin-American, Anglo- Saxon, and Germanic). A ten-factorial solution was found to be …

The Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish colonies in South America in 1767, leaving behind a remarkable musical legacy that was buried for over two hundred years. But the music did not disappear completely. Thanks to the Chiquitos people of Bolivia, the music was played and preserved throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1985, Swiss architect Hans Roth discovered 9,000 of these musical manuscripts and in 1990 UNESCO declared the churches of the Chiquitos a “patrimony of humanity”. Dr. Gustavo Leone of Loyola University Chicago's Department of Fine and Performing Arts has painstakingly retrieved and restored several of these …

Songs Of The Mountains, Songs Of Resistance A Study Of Protest Music Against "King Coal" In Southern Appalachia, Historically And Today, Sara Henry

Theses & ETDs

The focus of this project has been compiling a collection of music about mountaintop removal coal mining and the history of coal mining in Southern Appalachia. The songs are ballads, folk, bluegrass, and old time songs of the past and present. Some songs already focused on this important environmental and social justice issue, and others were changed lyrically to encompass this subject. The practice of changing lyrics to suit a new cause has been common in the history of folk music in America. For example, in Mark Allan Jacksons Prophet Singer, he spends part of a chapter outlining the ways …

Thoughts On Music Ethnography In Urban Indonesia: From Yogyakarta Recordings To Translocal Popular Culture In The Melayu Borderlands, Max Richter Jan 2011

Thoughts On Music Ethnography In Urban Indonesia: From Yogyakarta Recordings To Translocal Popular Culture In The Melayu Borderlands, Max Richter

Antropologi Indonesia

Previous studies on Indonesian music focused on cultural heritage and traditional preservation or western-style modern music such as pop and rock music. Both were perceived as separate genre, even modern music often downplayed traditional one. The author argues analysis of hybrid genre like keroncong and dangdut would provide more complicated picture than such dichotomy. He explained long history of cultural exchanges in various parts of Indonesia which showed these two genres influenced each other. As a case study the author presents urban music as main character of urban social lives in Indonesia. This article depicts street music and campursari in …

Whence Comes Black Art?: The Construction And Application Of “Black Motivation”, Derrell Acon Jan 2011

Whence Comes Black Art?: The Construction And Application Of “Black Motivation”, Derrell Acon

Lawrence University Honors Projects

George Schuyler, in his tragically misguided 1926 essay for The Nation magazine, “The Negro-Art Hokum,” suggests that the only difference between Blacks and Whites is the color of skin, and that both races experience the same social, psychological and educational forces in America. He blatantly disregards American racism and inequality, and in his attempt to put forth his advocacy of color-blindness he merely projects and perpetuates the most racist of ideals within our country. Schuyler views the concept of Black Art very narrowly and insists on the impossibility of such an idea because of the supposed Americanness of the art. …

The Need For Originality: Music Infringement In India, 11 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 169 (2011), Harini Ganesh

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

For decades, the Indian film industry has copied tunes from Western copyrighted works and created unauthorized derivatives. As the music and motion picture industries in the United States started taking notice of this copyright infringement, so too did Indian music directors as domestic infringers profited from copying. Despite the existence of an enacted copyright statute in India, and the nation’s membership with various international intellectual property treaties and conventions, enforcement continues to be poor. This lack of protection allows high-profile music directors in the Indian film industry to get away with copyright infringement. This comment proposes that India must improve …

Educate, Inspire, Change: A Musical Ethnography Of World Camp, Inc, Ian R. Copeland Jan 2011

Educate, Inspire, Change: A Musical Ethnography Of World Camp, Inc, Ian R. Copeland

Honors Papers

Blighted by nation-wide HIV and deforestation crises, the nation of Malawi plays host to scores of international Non-Governmental Organizations every year. This project focuses on one such organization, World Camp Incorporated, and its use of musical strategies in the implementation of educational outreach programs in rural primary school classrooms. Throughout a four-day curriculum, music is called upon to energize students, galvanize classroom unity, convey curricular concepts, and re-present medical information to host communities. Much has been written about music's affective and effective power as demonstrated through local community-based organizations, but this ethnographic project resituates music as a tool for social …

Prestructuring Multilayer Perceptrons Based On Information-Theoretic Modeling Of A Partido-Alto-Based Grammar For Afro-Brazilian Music: Enhanced Generalization And Principles Of Parsimony, Including An Investigation Of Statistical Paradigms, Mehmet Vurkaç

Dissertations and Theses

The present study shows that prestructuring based on domain knowledge leads to statistically significant generalization-performance improvement in artificial neural networks (NNs) of the multilayer perceptron (MLP) type, specifically in the case of a noisy real-world problem with numerous interacting variables.

The prestructuring of MLPs based on knowledge of the structure of a problem domain has previously been shown to improve generalization performance. However, the problem domains for those demonstrations suffered from significant shortcomings: 1) They were purely logical problems, and 2) they contained small numbers of variables in comparison to most data-mining applications today. Two implications of the former were …
