Isolation And Characterization Of Native Bacillus Thuringiensis Isolates From Syrian Soil And Testing Of Their Insecticidal Activities Against Some Insect Pests, Hassan Ammouneh, Muhand Harba, Emad Idris, Hayat Makee
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Bacillus thuringiensis was detected in 12.5% of soil samples collected from different regions in Syria and 25 B. thuringiensis isolates were found to be highly toxic to larvae of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, Phthorimaea operculella Zeller, and Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera), but not to the larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera). Light microscopy investigation showed the presence of bipyramidal and cuboidal parasporal bodies produced by these isolates. The existence of different cry genes in the tested isolates was studied using a PCR strategy with a set of general primers recognizing some of the cry genes reported in the relevant literature. Primers corresponding …

Field Evaluation Of Effective Microorganisms (Em) Application For Growth, Nodulation, And Nutrition Of Mung Bean, Arshad Javaid, Rukhsana Bajwa
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Effective microorganisms (EM) is a commercial biofertilizer that contains a mixture of co-existing beneficial microorganisms collected from natural environments. Predominantly it consists of species of photosynthetic and lactic acid bacteria, yeast, and actinomycetes. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of EM application on growth, nodulation, yield, and nutrient uptake in mung bean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] var. NIAB Mung 98 under field conditions. Field soil was amended with farmyard manure at 20 t ha^{-1}, Trifolium alexandrinum green manure at 20 t ha^{-1}, and recommended (NPK) and half (½ NPK) doses of chemical fertilizers. EM was applied in …
Global Perspectives On First Generation Liquid Biofuel Production, Rok Fink, Saso Medved
Global Perspectives On First Generation Liquid Biofuel Production, Rok Fink, Saso Medved
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Transport today is mostly sustained by liquid fossil fuels, despite the fact that the invention of the combustion engine started with biofuels. However, known environmental impacts and the instability of the fossil-fuel market have revived the status of biofuels. Some concerns have appeared regarding how emerging global climate changes will affect biofuels' feedstock production, since agriculture is strongly dependent on climate variables. Therefore, numerical models were introduced to calculate how temperature and precipitation could affect crop production for biodiesel and bioethanol production. Furthermore, 4 scenarios projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change were put into the calculations. The results …
Investigation Of The Reduction Of Mouldboard Ploughshare Wear Through Hot Stamping And Hardfacing Processes, Aysel Yazici
Investigation Of The Reduction Of Mouldboard Ploughshare Wear Through Hot Stamping And Hardfacing Processes, Aysel Yazici
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The effects of the hot stamping process and different hardfacing techniques, such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW), on the abrasive wear of ploughshares were investigated under field operational conditions. The abrasive wear losses were determined by measuring the weight and dimension changes before and after tillage. The wear losses of hot-stamped and hardfaced ploughshares were less significant than those of the conventionally heat-treated ploughshare specimens used under field conditions. Conventional heat treatment and hardfacing by the SMAW process decreased the wear weight losses by 46.31% and the dimensional losses by 86.77% in comparison …

Estimation Of Single Leaf Chlorophyll Content In Sugar Beet Using Machine Vision, Parviz Ahmadi Moghaddam, Mohammadali Haddad Derafshi, Vine Shirzad
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Estimating crop nitrogen status accurately during side-dressing operations is essential for effective management of site-specific nitrogen applications. Variable rate technology (VRT) is one of the major operations in precision agriculture to reduce environmental risks and increase fertilizer use efficiency. In the present study, color image analysis was performed to estimate sugar beet leaf chlorophyll status. The experiment was carried out in a phytotron and nitrogen was applied at 6 levels to the sugar beet grown in pots. Chlorophyll level of the leaves was measured by a SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter. To estimate chlorophyll status, a neural-network model was developed based on …

Assessment Of Yield And Water Use Efficiency Of Drip-Irrigated Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) As Affected By Deficit Irrigation, Fuad Hussein, Mussaddak Janat, Abdallah Yakoub
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
A field experiment was conducted for 2 consecutive years to evaluate the response of cotton crop to deficit irrigation under drip irrigation conditions. Water use efficiency (WUE), seed cotton yield, and fiber quality parameters were assessed at various irrigation levels. The experiment was set up to apply water at 4 different application rates: 50%, 65%, 80%, and 100% of the soil water depletion. These were abbreviated as DI50, DI65, DI80, and FI, respectively. The total amounts of irrigation water applied were 408 and 773 mm and the average seed cotton yields were 2909 and 5090 kg ha^{-1} for the DI50 …
Estimating The Soil Water Retention Curve From Soil Particle Size Distribution Using The Arya And Paris Model For Iranian Soils, Leila Rezaee, Mahmoud Shabanpour, Naser Davatgar
Estimating The Soil Water Retention Curve From Soil Particle Size Distribution Using The Arya And Paris Model For Iranian Soils, Leila Rezaee, Mahmoud Shabanpour, Naser Davatgar
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The direct measurement of the soil water retention curve (SWRC) in a laboratory is time-consuming, difficult, and costly. Thus, many attempts have been made to predict the water retention curve indirectly from the physical and chemical properties of soil. The particle size distribution curve is one of the indirect methods used to predict the water retention curve. The Arya and Paris (AP) model predicts the soil water retention curve from soil particle size distribution (PSD) data. The AP model estimates pore radius from the radius of spherical particles by using a scaling parameter (\alpha). The objective of this study was …
Market Intermediaries And Rural People In Bolivia's Forest Products Sector: Are Trusting Partnerships Possible?, James T. Murphy, Mary Lawhon
Market Intermediaries And Rural People In Bolivia's Forest Products Sector: Are Trusting Partnerships Possible?, James T. Murphy, Mary Lawhon
Geography
Decentralization in access to and control of Bolivia's forest resources, coupled with a rising global demand for tropical hardwoods, raises important questions about whether increased trade and community forest management (CFM) initiatives can enable forms of market integration that have more favourable outcomes for rural communities. This paper assesses the prospects for such a transition through an examination of the relationships linking wood product market intermediaries (brokers and buyers) to rural suppliers and forest communities in Bolivia. The analysis centres on whether trust - conceptualized as a power-laden sociospatial process driven by multiscalar factors - can evolve between buyers and …

Effects Of Dietary Fish Oil Replacement By Cottonseed Oil On Growth Performance And Fatty Acid Composition Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Müjde Güler, Mustafa Yildiz
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of replacing fish oil (FO) with cottonseed oil (CSO), as an alternative plant lipid source in diets for rainbow trout (89.3 ± 1.1 g mean individual weight), on the growth and fatty acid composition of fish. As a control diet, 5 experimental diets were formulated with pure FO and with partial or complete (25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% CSO, respectively) replacement of FO with CSO. The fish were fed 2% of their body weight per day for 60 days at an average water temperature of 10.2 °C. At the …

Using A Wiki To Teach College Level Academic Writing, Dawn Moore
Using A Wiki To Teach College Level Academic Writing, Dawn Moore
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Teaching writing by employing the tools made available by Web 2.0 technology allows students to meet the changing educational requirements for writing with technology. This paper argues that the wiki is a facile tool for teaching academic writing at the college level. It theoretically and pedagogically situates the wiki in a threedimensional rhetorical context. This paper also demonstrates how and why the wiki functions as a collaborative writing tool adhering to a socially constructed view of knowledge. As a constructive hypertext, wikis can be used to teach, clarify, reinforce, and deepen many fundamental writing skills. This paper reviews the body …
Neurorehabilitation Of The Hand Using The Cybergrasp[Tm] And Mirror Image, Amy Frances Boos
Neurorehabilitation Of The Hand Using The Cybergrasp[Tm] And Mirror Image, Amy Frances Boos
Theses
In recent years, researchers have explored the use of a mirror image as a means of rehabilitation for individuals suffering from hemiparesis. Through neuroimaging and functional testing, neurological improvement has been demonstrated in those that engage in mirror therapy. Bilateral training, or simultaneous movement of both sides of the body, has also been studied as a treatment method to improve function after cerebral vascular accident. The development of robotic systems to assist movement of the human body has played a major role in the fabrication of bilateral training devices.
In this experiment, the CyberGrasp™ robotic exoskeleton was used to assist …

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) well blowout released more petroleum hydrocarbons into the marine environment than any previous U.S. oil spill (4.9 million barrels), fouling marine life, damaging deep sea and shoreline habitats and causing closures of economically valuable fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico. A suite of pollutants — liquid and gaseous petroleum compounds plus chemical dispersants — poured into ecosystems that had already been stressed by overfishing, development and global climate change. Beyond the direct effects that were captured in dramatic photographs of oiled birds in the media, it is likely that there are subtle, delayed, indirect and potentially …
Information Asymmetry And Information Failure: Disclosure Problems In Complex Financial Markets, Steven L. Schwarcz
Information Asymmetry And Information Failure: Disclosure Problems In Complex Financial Markets, Steven L. Schwarcz
Faculty Scholarship
Disclosure of information has been a key to regulation of the financial markets in the United States. Indeed, some have argued that the ‘exclusive focus [of federal securities regulation] is on full disclosure’ (Hazen, 2005). Yet there is relatively little dispute that although most if not all of the risks giving rise to the collapse of the market for structured securities backed by subprime mortgages were disclosed, the disclosure was ineffective. Disclosure failed because of the complexity of those securities and transactions.
This chapter examines disclosure’s insufficiency in addressing information asymmetry, arguing that complexity can cause information failure. There are …

The Military-Industrial Complex, Charles J. Dunlap Jr.
Faculty Scholarship
In his 1961 farewell address, President Eisenhower cautioned against a future in which a powerful military-industrial complex manipulated policy to the detriment of American interests. Dunlap argues that, fifty years later, Eisenhower’s fears have not been realized; in fact, the military-industrial enterprise is in decline. Certainly, the U.S. military owes its continued preeminence to both the quality of its combatants and the superiority of its weaponry. Yet as the manpower-centric strategies in Afghanistan and Iraq replaced technology-centric operations; as complicated defense acquisitions laws deterred companies from obtaining contracts; and as the economic downturn and rising national deficit have strained budgets, …

Unconstitutionally Male?: The Story Of United States V. Virginia, Katharine T. Bartlett
Unconstitutionally Male?: The Story Of United States V. Virginia, Katharine T. Bartlett
Faculty Scholarship
This article tracks the different views of gender equality reflected in United States v. Virginia, from trial through the various appeals, including the 1996 opinion of the United States Supreme Court, and through the actual integration of women into VMI. It highlights the fact that while many views of equality were represented in the case throughout its history, no party and no court addressed what is arguably the most objectionable feature of VMI, which was not that it excluded women, but that its "unique" pedagogical method was based on an explicitly demeaning and subordinating view of women.
Good Faith And Law Evasion, Samuel W. Buell
Good Faith And Law Evasion, Samuel W. Buell

Laws imposing sanctions can be self-defeating by supplying incentive and guidance for actors engaged in socially undesirable activities to reshape conduct to avoid penalties. Sometimes this is deterrence. But if the new activity, as much as the old, contravenes the normative stance of the legal project, it is a failure of law. The problem of evasion warrants response in many fields - not least in criminal law despite the frequent and too simple assumption that legality-related values require narrow prohibitions that unavoidably permit evasion. Three common responses to evasion have serious deficits. Foregoing control of evasion is a mistake if …

Dangerous Categories: Narratives Of Corporate Board Diversity, Lissa Lamkin Broome, John M. Conley, Kimberly D. Krawiec
Faculty Scholarship
In this article, we report the results of a series of interviews with corporate directors about racial, ethnic, and gender diversity on corporate boards. On the one hand, our respondents were clear and nearly uniform in their statements that board diversity was an important goal worth pursuing. Yet when asked to provide examples or anecdotes illustrating why board diversity matters, many subjects acknowledged difficulty in illustrating theory with reference to practice.
This expressed reluctance to come to specific terms with general claims about the value of director diversity inspired our title phrase: dangerous categories. That is, while "diversity" evokes universal …

Twelfth Oliver Schreiner Memorial Lecture, delivered on 20 October 2010 at the School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Many gradual changes in science, law and society are crystallizing to shape a significant transformation in administrative law. The doctrinal framework within which Justice Schreiner himself attempted to modernize how law should regulate government and private economic activity seems from our vantage point to be quite antiquated. In explaining why, my examples will come from the world of financial services, but they could easily be found anywhere in the area of law and regulation. First I will outline the …

Although a chain of bank failures remains an important symbol of systemic risk, the ongoing trend towards disintermediation—or enabling companies to directly access the ultimate source of funds, the capital (i.e., financial) markets, without going through banks or other financial intermediaries—is making these failures less critical than in the past. While banks and other financial institutions remain important sources of capital, companies today are able to obtain most of their financing through financial markets without the use of intermediaries. As a result, financial markets themselves are increasingly central to any examination of systemic risk.
