Digital Technology And The Variation In Design Routines: A Sequence Analysis Of Four Design Processes, James Gaskin, B. Veeresh Thummadi, Kalle Lyytinen, Youngjin Yoo

Faculty Publications

We advance a theory of design process variation across organizational types and the effects of digitalization on these processes. We argue that design routines are subject to greater variation within and between organizations as organizations embed increasingly rich repertoires of digital capabilities in their design activities. Using a sequence analysis method we compare design process variation in four organizations to examine how design routines vary due to differences in embedded digital capabilities and organization of the design process. Our analysis reveals new insights on the effects organizational context and digitalization have on design routine composition.

3-D Computational Investigation Of Viscoelastic Biofilms Using Gpus, Paisa Seeluangsawat Jan 2011

3-D Computational Investigation Of Viscoelastic Biofilms Using Gpus, Paisa Seeluangsawat

Theses and Dissertations

A biofilm is a slimy colony of bacteria and the materials they secrete, collectively called “extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)”. The EPS consists mostly of bio-polymers, which cross link into a network that behave viscoelastically under deformation. We propose a single-fluid multi-component phase field model of biofilms that captures this behavior, then use numerical simulations on GPUs to investigate the biofilm’s growth and its hydrodynamics properties.

Optimization Of Piezoelectric Transducers Using Sdoe, Devin Delong Jan 2011

Optimization Of Piezoelectric Transducers Using Sdoe, Devin Delong

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

A common problem surrounding piezoelectric transducers is matching the highimpedance active piezoelectric element with a low-impedance load, typically water or skin. This is a common problem with medical devices [Ali00]. Matching layers are added in an attempt to gradually decrease the impedance of the active piezoelectric element down to the impedance of water. If the impedance is not gradually decreased, acoustic waves are reflected at the boundaries that are proportional to the impedance mismatch of the two materials. A dual-matching layer transducer is analyzed, and we attempt to optimize the impedances and thicknesses of the two matching layers using statistical …

Atrophy Or Progress? Evaluating The Evolution Of Environmental Policy By Comparing Large Scale Oil Spills In The United States, Nicole Henken Jan 2011

Atrophy Or Progress? Evaluating The Evolution Of Environmental Policy By Comparing Large Scale Oil Spills In The United States, Nicole Henken

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Many political theorists accept that focusing events effect the cycle of environmental policy change without agreeing on the specifics of how events impact the construction of legislation. Pessimistic theories (consisting of Down’s “Issue Attention Cycle” and Freudenburg’s “Atrophy of Vigilance”) and optimistic theories (including the “Punctuated Equilibrium Model” and Busenberg’s “Evolution of Vigilance Model”) offer opposing views of policy creation. As focusing events, the Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon oil spills together serve as effective cases for assessing and comparing the validity of pessimistic and optimistic policy change models. The analysis of each set of theories adds to the understanding …

Statistical Model For College Enrollment: Exaninatino Of A Selective Liberal Arts College, Tamara Howard

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In this study, I use a logistic regression to model the probability of an admitted applicant either enrolling into the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University or declining admission. This institution is a small, selective liberal arts college and the case study spans an eleven year period (from 1999 to 2009). To construct my model, I examine variables such as level of academic performance, personal characteristics, geographic proximity to the institution, amount of financial aid offered, timing of admission decision, and contact with the college. I expect that students with the highest levels of academic performance, furthest …

An Animal Model Of Performance Enhancing Drugs And Catastrophic Interference, Akiva Rabinowitz Jan 2011

An Animal Model Of Performance Enhancing Drugs And Catastrophic Interference, Akiva Rabinowitz

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The neural networks that underlie memory and learning are some of the most complex systems that scientists seek to describe. Recent research has demonstrated that drugs which increase synaptic plasticity possess the capacity to enhance memory. The question that the present study sought to address was whether it is possible that cognition-enhancing drugs might enhance some memories to the detriment of others. Mice of the C57BL/6J inbred strain were trained on the Morris water maze task. They were then transferred over to a second, similar, water maze and trained using either the cognition-enhancing drug apamin or saline injected intraperitoneally. A …

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Organometallic Complexes Of Iridium And Iron In Aqueous And Basic Media, Michael Webster-Gardiner Jan 2011

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Organometallic Complexes Of Iridium And Iron In Aqueous And Basic Media, Michael Webster-Gardiner

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The catalytic activation of C-H bonds and the subsequent functionalization of hydrocarbons into heteroatom containing products is an area of fundamental importance in chemistry. Three different iridium pincer complexes for C-H activation were synthesized, IrCl3NNN, IrCl3NNN methyl, IrCl3NNNN (NNN= bis-((benzoimidazol))amine), (NNNmethyl = bis-(benzoimidazol)methyl)amine), and (NNNN = tris-((benzoimidazol))amine). These complexes were analyzed for C-H activation between benzoic acid and KOD/D2O solutions. We found that the C-H activation did not proceed catalytically. Also iron containing derivatives containing similar ligand motifs were synthesized , FeCl3NNNN, FeCl3IPI, FeCl3BPB, FeCl3BPB-OH (IPI = 2,6-diimidizoylpyridine, BPB = 2,6-dibenzoimidizoylpyridine, BPB-OH = 4-hydoxy-2,6,dibenzoimidizoylpyridine) and studied for their reactivity towards …

Information Surfing For Radiation Building, Chaouki T. Abdallah, R.A. Cortez, H.G. Tanner, R. Lumia

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We develop a control scheme for a group of mobile sensors to map radiation over a given planar polygonal region. The advantage of this methodology is that it provides quick situational awareness regarding radiation levels, which is being updated and refined in real- time as more measurements become available. The control algorithm is based on the concept of information surfing, where navigation is done by following information gradients, taking into account sensing performance and the dynamics of the observed process

Why I Can't Love The Homemade Semantic Web, Jason Bengtson Jan 2011

Why I Can't Love The Homemade Semantic Web, Jason Bengtson

Publications

Almost all information professionals agree that the web needs to move to a semantic structure. While work is proceeding in this area, movements to get individual web authors to use semantic markup tools have also been on the rise. This author argues that such efforts are ill conceived and he proposes an automated alternative.

Neutrosophic Interpretation Of Tao Te Ching, Florentin Smarandache, Fu Yuhua Jan 2011

Neutrosophic Interpretation Of Tao Te Ching, Florentin Smarandache, Fu Yuhua

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The purpose of this book is to extend the foundation and application range of 'Tao Te Ching'. The reasons for this are as follows. Firstly, we are willing to point out that 'Tao Te Ching' already has some limitation, because many questions we are interested in cannot be answered within 'Tao Te Ching'. For example, 'Tao Te Ching' basically discussed the matters in China, however considering all possible situations it should matter in foreign countries as well, i.e. the “global village”. This was impossible in Lao Tzu’s time. Secondly, if the original “Tao Te Ching” is regarded as “Positive Tao …

A New Approach To Algebraic Coding Theory Through The Applications Of Soft Sets, Florentin Smarandache, Mumtaz Ali Jan 2011

A New Approach To Algebraic Coding Theory Through The Applications Of Soft Sets, Florentin Smarandache, Mumtaz Ali

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Algebraic codes play a signifcant role in the minimisation of data corruption which caused by defects such as inference, noise channel, crosstalk, and packet loss. In this paper, we introduce soft codes (soft linear codes) through the application of soft sets which is an approximated collection of codes. We also discuss several types of soft codes such as type-1 soft codes, complete soft codes etc. Further, we construct the soft generator matrix and soft parity check matrix for the soft linear codes. Moreover, we develop two techniques for the decoding of soft codes.

Uniform And Partially Uniform Redistribution Rules, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper introduces two new fusion rules for combining quantitative basic belief assignments. These rules although very simple have not been proposed in literature so far and could serve as useful alternatives because of their low computation cost with respect to the recent advanced Proportional Conflict Redistribution rules developed in the DSmT framework.

Evidence Supporting Measure Of Similarity For Reducing The Complexity In Information Fusion, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert, Xinde Li, Xinhan Huang

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper presents a new method for reducing the number of sources of evidence to combine in order to reduce the complexity of the fusion processing. Such a complexity reduction is often required in many applications where the real-time constraint and limited computing resources are of prime importance. The basic idea consists in selecting, among all sources available, only a subset of sources of evidence to combine. The selection is based on an evidence supporting measure of similarity (ESMS) criterion which is an efficient generic tool for outlier sources identification and rejection. The ESMS between two sources of evidence can …

Evidence Supporting Measure Of Similarity For Reducing The Complexity In Information Fusion, Xinde Li, Jean Dezert, Florentin Smarandache, Xinhan Huang

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper proposes a new solution for reducing the number of sources of evidence to be combined in order to diminish the complexity of the fusion process required in some applications where the real-time constraint and strong computing resource limitation are of prime importance. The basic idea consists in selecting, among the whole set of sources of evidence, only the biggest subset of sources which are not too contradicting based on a criterion of Evidence Supporting Measure of Similarity (ESMS) in order to process solely the coherent information received. The ESMS criterion serves actually as a generic tool for outlier …

Can Oxygen Set Thermal Limits In An Insect And Drive Gigantism?, Wilco C.E.P. Verberk, David T. Bilton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BACKGROUND: Thermal limits may arise through a mismatch between oxygen supply and demand in a range of animal taxa. Whilst this oxygen limitation hypothesis is supported by data from a range of marine fish and invertebrates, its generality remains contentious. In particular, it is unclear whether oxygen limitation determines thermal extremes in tracheated arthropods, where oxygen limitation may be unlikely due to the efficiency and plasticity of tracheal systems in supplying oxygen directly to metabolically active tissues. Although terrestrial taxa with open tracheal systems may not be prone to oxygen limitation, species may be affected during other life-history stages, particularly …

Capture Technique And Fish Personality: Angling Targets Timid Bluegill Sunfish,Lepomis Macrochirus, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Thomas R. Binder, Keegan P. Mcgrath, Steven J. Cooke, Jean Guy J. Godin

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Size-selective harvesting associated with commercial and recreational fishing practices has been shown to alter life history traits through a phenomenon known as fishing-induced evolution. This phenomenon may be a result of selection pathways targeting life-history traits directly or indirectly through correlations with behavioral traits. Here, we report on the relationship between individual differences in behavior and capture technique (beach seining versus angling) in wild-caught juvenile bluegill sunfish ( Lepomis macrochirus ). Both fish caught by using a seine net (seined) and fish caught by using a lure (angled) were individually tested under standardized laboratory conditions for their boldness, water-column use, …

Real-Time Road Traffic Prediction With Spatio-Temporal Correlations, Wanli Min, Laura Wynter Jan 2011

Real-Time Road Traffic Prediction With Spatio-Temporal Correlations, Wanli Min, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Real-time road traffic prediction is a fundamental capability needed to make use of advanced, smart transportation technologies. Both from the point of view of network operators as well as from the point of view of travelers wishing real-time route guidance, accurate short-term traffic prediction is a necessary first step. While techniques for short-term traffic prediction have existed for some time, emerging smart transportation technologies require the traffic prediction capability to be both fast and scalable to full urban networks. We present a method that has proven to be able to meet this challenge. The method presented provides predictions of speed …
