Military Entrepreneurs: Patterns In Latin America, Kristina Mani Jan 2011

Military Entrepreneurs: Patterns In Latin America, Kristina Mani

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Despite the recent shift to democratic regimes and market-based economies, in many Latin American countries the military retains important economic roles as owner, manager, and stakeholder in economic enterprises. Such military entrepreneurship poses a challenge to the development of democratic civil-military relations and, by extension, to the development of liberal democracy in the region. While scholars have noted this situation with concern, they have given little attention to distinguishing the different types of military entrepreneurship, which reflect distinct historical patterns and implications. This article identifies two major types of military entrepreneurs in Latin America: industrializers, determined to build national defense …

Influence Of Fan Operation On Fan Assessment Numeration System (Fans) Test Results, Gabriela Munhoz Morello Jan 2011

Influence Of Fan Operation On Fan Assessment Numeration System (Fans) Test Results, Gabriela Munhoz Morello

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The use of velocity traverses to measure in-situ air flow rate of ventilation fans can be subject to significant errors. The Fan Assessment Numeration System (FANS) was developed by the USD-ARS Southern Poultry Research Laboratory and refined at the University of Kentucky to measure air flow of fans in-situ. The procedures for using the FANS unit to test fans in-situ are not completely standardized. This study evaluated the effect of operating fan positions relative to the FANS unit for ten 1.22 m diameter fans in two types of poultry barns, with fans placed immediately next to each other and …

Online Sources Of Health Statistics In Saudi Arabia., Abdulmohsen H. Al-Zalabani Jan 2011

Online Sources Of Health Statistics In Saudi Arabia., Abdulmohsen H. Al-Zalabani

Saudi Medical Journal

Researchers looking for health statistics on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) may face difficulty. This is partly due to the lack of awareness of potential sources where such statistics can be found. The purpose of this paper is to review various online sources of health statistics on KSA, and to highlight their content, coverage, and presentation of health statistics. Five bibliographic databases where local research can be found are described. National registries available are summarized. Governmental agencies, as well as societies and centers where the bulk of health statistics is produced are also described. Finally, some potential international sources …

Strong Optical Injection Locked Semiconductor Laser For High Bit Rate Chaotic Optical Communications, Muzahim Ibrahim Azawe, Ragaad Habib Saied Jan 2011

Strong Optical Injection Locked Semiconductor Laser For High Bit Rate Chaotic Optical Communications, Muzahim Ibrahim Azawe, Ragaad Habib Saied

Turkish Journal of Physics

We present in this article how strong optical injection can produce chaotic dynamics in the output of the semiconductor laser that is preferable for perfect encrypted optical communication networks. Significant increase in the relaxation resonance frequency was found implying higher degree of enhancement in modulation bandwidth. Numerical investigations under the condition of strong optical injection locking of the slave laser shows that instabilities in the photon number was observed and had settled down after a time of in the order of carrier lifetime. The model presented can be used to extract the characteristic parameters of the injection locking for detuning …

Metals And Metal Oxides Particles Produced By Pulsed Laser Ablation Under High Vacuum, Khurram Siraj, Yasir Sohail, Aasma Tabassum

Turkish Journal of Physics

A pulsed KrF Excimer laser (248 nm, 15 mJ) was utilized to synthesize different particles on (111) Si substrate under vacuum \sim 10^{-6} torr using Aluminum (Al), Platinum (Pt), Tungsten (W), Molybdenum (Mo), Cadmium Oxide (CdO), and Yttrium Oxide (Y_2O_3) targets. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to study particle size distribution on silicon substrate. The size of individual metal particles was found to be ranging from 71 nm to 2 \mu m whereas metal oxides particles were found in the range of 71 nm to 1.1 \mu m. The particles below 100 nm are formed by gas phase condensation …

Hydromagnetic Thermal Boundary Layer Flow Of A Perfectly Conducting Fluid, Kalidas Das Jan 2011

Hydromagnetic Thermal Boundary Layer Flow Of A Perfectly Conducting Fluid, Kalidas Das

Turkish Journal of Physics

Using successive approximation technique, an analysis of unsteady hydromagnetic boundary layer flow with thermal relaxation of perfectly conducting, viscous incompressible fluid past a semi-infinite porous plate in presence of heat absorbing sinks is carried out. The expression for velocity and temperature fields, local skin friction coefficient, local heat transfer coefficient etc have been derived when the free stream velocity exponentially depends on time. The effects of different parameters entering into the problem are shown graphically and discussed numerically.

Alunite Formation Within Silica Stalactites From The Sydney Region, South-Eastern Australia, R. A.L. Wray Jan 2011

Alunite Formation Within Silica Stalactites From The Sydney Region, South-Eastern Australia, R. A.L. Wray

International Journal of Speleology

This paper presents X-ray diffraction and SEM evidence for the formation of alunite, and possibly small quantities of natroalunite, within opal-A stalactites formed on quartz sandstone near Sydney in south-eastern, Australia. Alunite has been reported as a speleogenetic mineral from sediments within a number of caves around the world, but this is believed to be the first report of speleothemic alunite in opaline silica speleothems. Individual alunite crystals have not been visually identified, but SEM X-ray element mapping suggests the alunite has formed amongst kaolinite clay. Sedimentary alunite and natroalunite formation is usually associated with the reaction of sulphuric acid …

Teaching Intrapersonal Intelligence As A Lawyering Skill: Introducing Values Systems Into The Environmental Law Syllabus, Michael Burger Jan 2011

Teaching Intrapersonal Intelligence As A Lawyering Skill: Introducing Values Systems Into The Environmental Law Syllabus, Michael Burger

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

The ranges and types of problems with traditional law school curricula, pedagogies, and learning cultures are well-rehearsed, and have been framed, narrated, and analyzed in a number of prominent venues, along with suggested improvements and proposals for systemic reform. This Essay addresses one aspect of the ongoing and pervasive critique: the need to develop in law students the diverse intellectual competencies that the practice of law requires. Working within the framework of Professor Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, I argue that intrapersonal intelligence and the self-reflexive analytic process it invokes are important tools in the practicing lawyer’s toolbox, and …

Increasing Research Relevance In Dss: Looking Forward By Reflecting On 40 Years Of Progress, Karen Vizecky, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

Decision Support Systems (DSS) is a field that has made rapid progress in establishing itself and maturing into seven key sub-fields. However, there are continued concerns about the relevancy and growing disconnect between academic contributions and professional applications of DSS. This paper serves to review the existing literature, and propose a Research Relevance Framework meant to serve as a guideline to ensure future DSS research has a consistent standard upon which relevance can be assessed.

Toward A Maturity Model For Dss Development Processes, Omar F. El-Gayar, Amit Deokar, Jie Tao

Research & Publications

Despite recent progress with Decision support systems (DSS) development methodologies, a gap still exist in terms of theability to assess the maturity of an organization with respect to its DSS development process. A need exist to be able todescribe DSS development processes at a meta-level. Equally important is the ability to provide organization withprescriptions to increase the maturity of their DSS development processes. In this paper, we propose a Decision Support System Maturity Model (DSS-MM). The model draws on extant literaturerelated to DSS development methodologies, practices and processes to identify pertinent DSS development practices anddefine maturity models for these practices. Decision-Enabled Dynamic Process Management For Networked Enterprises, Amit Deokar, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

In todays networked economy face numerous information management challenges, both from a process management perspective as well as a decision support perspective. While there have been significant relevant advances in the areas of business process management as well as decision sciences, several open research issues exist. In this paper, we highlight the following key challenges. First, current process modeling and management techniques lack in providing a seamless integration of decision models and tools in existing business processes, which is critical to achieve organizational objectives. Second, given the dynamic nature of business processes in networked enterprises, process management approaches that enable …
