Biosorption Parameter Estimation With Genetic Algorithm, Khim Hoong Chu, Xiao Feng, Eui Yong Kim, Yung Tse Hung Jan 2011

Biosorption Parameter Estimation With Genetic Algorithm, Khim Hoong Chu, Xiao Feng, Eui Yong Kim, Yung Tse Hung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

In biosorption research, a fairly broad range of mathematical models are used to correlate discrete data points obtained from batch equilibrium, batch kinetic or fixed bed breakthrough experiments. Most of these models are inherently nonlinear in their parameters. Some of the models have enjoyed widespread use, largely because they can be linearized to allow the estimation of parameters by least-squares linear regression. Selecting a model for data correlation appears to be dictated by the ease with which it can be linearized and not by other more important criteria such as parameter accuracy or theoretical relevance. As a result, models that …

Liquid Radioactive Wastes Treatment: A Review, R.O. Abdel Rahman, H. A. Ibrahium, Yung Tse Hung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Radioactive wastes are generated during nuclear fuel cycle operation, production and application of radioisotope in medicine, industry, research, and agriculture, and as a byproduct of natural resource exploitation, which includes mining and processing of ores, combustion of fossil fuels, or production of natural gas and oil. To ensure the protection of human health and the environment from the hazard of these wastes, a planned integrated radioactive waste management practice should be applied. This work is directed to review recent published researches that are concerned with testing and application of different treatment options as a part of the integrated radioactive waste …

Integrated Reliable And Robust Design, Gowrishankar Ravichandran Jan 2011

Integrated Reliable And Robust Design, Gowrishankar Ravichandran

Masters Theses

"The objective of this research is to develop an integrated design methodology for reliability and robustness. Reliability-based design (RBD) and robust design (RD) are important to obtain optimal design characterized by low probability of failure and minimum performance variations respectively. But performing both RBD and RD in a product design may be conflicting and time consuming. An integrated design model is needed to achieve both reliability and robustness simultaneously. The purpose of this thesis is to integrate reliability and robustness. To achieve this objective, we first study the general relationship between reliability and robustness. Then we perform a numerical study …

Upgrade And Simulation Of The Subcritical Assembly At Missouri University Of Science And Technology, Lucas Powelson Tucker Jan 2011

Upgrade And Simulation Of The Subcritical Assembly At Missouri University Of Science And Technology, Lucas Powelson Tucker

Masters Theses

"The Missouri University of Science and Technology Subcritical Assembly (S&TSub) was brought back into service and upgraded with a new neutron detection system and internet access. Before the upgrade neutron counting was only possible in one location. Using a movable detection system housed in acrylic tubes measurements can now be taken in any empty fuel location and at any height within the tube, making three dimensional flux mapping a possibility. By connecting the new detection system to a Canberra Lynx Digital Signal Analyzer, remote users can have limited data collecting capabilities. To further enhance the potential of the facility, an …

In Response To Need, A History Of The Western Australian Department Of Agriculture - 1894 To 2008, E N. Fitzpatrick

Books & book chapters

The department was not always such a significant organisation; it came from very small beginnings. However, it has been a major component of the engine which has produced an agricultural industry in a Mediterranean climate zone which is superior to all others operating in this zone. This book is a summary of its work. There are many more fascinating chapters to be recorded of work on specific issues of development, investigation or conservation. I hope they will be written by someone one day. With this in mind the department has decided to put the book on a web page where …

Distribution And Allometry Of The Knobby Swimcrab,Macropipus Tuberculatus (Roux, 1830) (Brachyura, Portunidae) In The Strait Of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea), Giandomenico Nardone, Sergio Ragonese

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Distribution and biometric information for Macropipus tuberculatus of the Strait of Sicily were obtained via an experimental bottom trawl survey carried out in 2000. The species occurred with low frequency (20%) and abundance (365 specimens), showing a scattered spatial distribution, split in 2 preferential depth levels (90-160 m and 230-460 m). Males were larger and more abundant than females. The carapace length width relationship was allometric positive (b > 1), and the carapace length weight relationship was isometric (b = 3).

Some Small Mammal Fossils Of Üçağızlı Cave (Hatay, Turkey), Fadi̇me Suata Alpaslan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Small mammal assemblages of Üçağızlı Cave, 2 from the early Upper Paleolithic and 1 from the Epipaleolithic, spanning a period from 41 to 17 kya, are described. The remains are referred to as Chionomys nivalis, Microtus guentheri, Apodemus mystacinus, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus witherbyi, Mus macedonicus, Mesocricetus brandti, Glirulus sp., Crocidura sp., Pipistrellus cf. kuhlii, and Myotis sp. The rodent fauna of Üçağızlı suggests the dominance of open country and rocky ground with a woodland component. There does not seem to have been any essential environmental changes during the deposition of these layers. However, the poor sample of the Epipaleolithic hampers …

Reducing The Cost Of Upgrading Dublin City’S Local Authority Housing Built Prior To The Introduction Of The 1991 Building Regulations, Through Lean Thinking/Lean Construction, Daniel P. O'Neill, Louis Gunnigan, Peter Clarke

Conference papers

Local authorities in the Republic of Ireland are being required to upgrade their housing stocks. Due to the current economic recession local authorities, while receiving grants from central government, are struggling financially to upgrade their housing stocks. More cost efficiency is required when undertaking works. The research examines how the cost of upgrading Dublin City’s local authority housing built prior to the introduction of the 1991 building regulations can be reduced through applying lean thinking. This paper proposes a lean model for the upgrading of local authority housing in Dublin City. The paper concludes with an outline of where monies …

The Search For Fair Agency Process: The Immigration Opinions Of Judge Michael Daly Hawkins, 1994-2010, Lenni B. Benson

Articles & Chapters

Judge Michael Daly Hawkins has been a member of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals since 1994; but he has been concerned with the forms and varieties of administrative or bureaucratic process his entire career. When he became a member of the federal judiciary, his role was clearly altered. However, his commitment to fairness and integrity in adjudication remained undiminished. This article will explore some of Judge Hawkins’s many immigration decisions, both majority and dissenting opinions, which reflect his commitment to the preservation of a due process.

The reality of immigration adjudication in the Ninth Circuit is that there are …

Pulmonary Particle Deposition In Relation To Age, Body Weight, And Species, Lisa M. Weber Jan 2011

Pulmonary Particle Deposition In Relation To Age, Body Weight, And Species, Lisa M. Weber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As a result of dissimilarity in lung morphometry and physiological conditions, therapeutic aerosol particles deposit differently in humans of various ages and body weights. These particles also deposit differently in non-human species that are often utilized in inhalation and dosing studies. The focus of this work is to determine the optimal particle size and deposition (traditional efficiency and volume-weighted) of therapeutic particles in humans of both genders ranging in age from 3 months old to 21 years old and three non-human species (B6C3F1 mouse, Long-Evans hooded rat, and Beagle dog). This study finds that in humans, both optimal …

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Lysobactor enzymogenes strain OH11 is an emerging biological control agent of fungal and bacterial diseases. We recently completed its genome sequence and found it contains a large number of gene clusters putatively responsible for the biosynthesis of nonribosomal peptides and polyketides, including the previously identified antifungal dihydromaltophilin (HSAF). One of the gene clusters contains two huge open reading frames, together encoding 12 modules of nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS). Gene disruption of one of the NRPS led to the disappearance of a metabolite produced in the wild type and the elimination of its antibacterial activity. The metabolite and antibacterial activity were …

Communication Support For People With Als, David R. Beukelman, Susan Fager, Amy Nordness Jan 2011

Communication Support For People With Als, David R. Beukelman, Susan Fager, Amy Nordness

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Almost all people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) experience a motor speech disorder, such as dysarthria, as the disease progresses. At some point, 80 to 95% of people with ALS are unable tomeet their daily communication needs using natural speech. Unfortunately, once intelligibility begins to decrease, speech performance often deteriorates so rapidly that there is little time to implement an appropriate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention; therefore, appropriate timing of referral for AAC assessment and intervention continues to be a most important clinical decision-making issue. AAC acceptance and use have increased considerably during the past decade. Many people use …

Metastability Of Free Cobalt And Iron Clusters: A Possible Precursor To Bulk Ferromagnetism, Xiaoshan Xu, Shuangye Yin, Ramiro Moro, Anthony Liang, John Bowlan, Walt A. De Heer Jan 2011

Metastability Of Free Cobalt And Iron Clusters: A Possible Precursor To Bulk Ferromagnetism, Xiaoshan Xu, Shuangye Yin, Ramiro Moro, Anthony Liang, John Bowlan, Walt A. De Heer

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

Homonuclear cobalt and iron clusters CoN and FeN measured in a cryogenic molecular beam exist in two states with distinct magnetic moments (μ), polarizabilities, and ionization potentials, indicating distinct valences. The μ is approximately quantized: μN ~ 2NμB in the ground states and μN* ~ NμB in the excited states for Co; μN ~ 3N μB and μN * ~ NμB for Fe. At a large size, the average μ of the two states converges to the bulk value with diminishing ionization potential differences. …

The Effective Surface Debye Temperature Of Yb:Gan, S. R. Mchale, J. W. Mcclory, J. C. Petrosky, J. Wu, R. Palai, P. A. Dowben, I. Ketsman Jan 2011

The Effective Surface Debye Temperature Of Yb:Gan, S. R. Mchale, J. W. Mcclory, J. C. Petrosky, J. Wu, R. Palai, P. A. Dowben, I. Ketsman

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The effective Debye temperature of ytterbium and gallium in Yb:GaN thin films has been obtained using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The vibrational motion normal to the surface results in a dimunition of photoemission intensities from which we have estimated the effective Debye temperatures of 221±30 K and 308±30 K for Yb and Ga, respectively. The difference between the measured values for Yb and Ga suggests that the Debye temperatures are influenced by the local environment. The smaller effective surface Debye temperature for Yb correlates to a soft, strained surface, possibly due to an increased Yb―N bond length as compared to the …

Single-Cycle Terahertz Pulses With >0.2 V/Å Field Amplitudes Via Coherent Transition Radiation, Dan Daranciang, John Goodfellow, Matthias Fuchs, Haidan Wen, Shambhu Ghimire, David A. Reis, Henrik Loos, Alan Fisher, Aaron Lindenberg Jan 2011

Matthias Fuchs Publications

We demonstrate terahertz pulses with field amplitudes exceeding 0.2 V/Å generated by coherent transition radiation. Femtosecond, relativistic electron bunches generated at the Linac Coherent Light Source are passed through a beryllium foil, and the emitted radiation is characterized as a function of the bunch duration and charge. Broadband pulses centered at a frequency of 10 THz with energies of 140 µJ are measured. These far-below- band gap pulses drive a nonlinear optical response in a silicon photodiode, with which we perform nonlinear autocorrelations that yield information regarding the terahertz temporal profile.

We have measured the production of Lyman α and Balmer α fluorescence from atomic H and D for the photodissociation of H2, HD and D2 by linearly-polarized photons with energies between 22 and 64 eV. We discuss systematic uncertainties associated with our data, and compare our results with previous experimental results and ab initio calculations of the dissociation process. We comment on the discrepancies.

Over 60 years ago, Charles Kittel predicted that quadrant domains should spontaneously form in small ferromagnetic platelets. He expected that the direction of magnetization within each quadrant should lie parallel to the platelet surface, minimizing demagnetizing fields, and that magnetic moments should be configured into an overall closed loop, or flux-closure arrangement. Although now a ubiquitous observation in ferromagnets, obvious flux-closure patterns have been somewhat elusive in ferroelectric materials. This is despite the analogous behaviour between these two ferroic subgroups and the recent prediction of dipole closure states by atomistic simulations research. Here we show Piezoresponse Force Microscopy images of …

The formation of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) at complex oxide interfaces is directly influenced by the oxide electronic properties. We investigated how local electron correlations control the 2DEG by inserting a single atomic layer of a rare-earth oxide (RO) [(R is lanthanum (La), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), samarium (Sm), or yttrium (Y)] into an epitaxial strontium titanate oxide (SrTiO3) matrix using pulsed-laser deposition with atomic layer control. We find that structures with La, Pr, and Nd ions result in conducting 2DEGs at the inserted layer, whereas the structures with Sm or Y ions are insulating. Our local …

A Giant Tunneling Electroresistance Effect Driven By Electrically Controlled Spin Valve At A Complex Oxide Interface, John D. Burton, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal Jan 2011

A Giant Tunneling Electroresistance Effect Driven By Electrically Controlled Spin Valve At A Complex Oxide Interface, John D. Burton, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

A giant tunneling electroresistance effect may be achieved in a ferroelectric tunnel junction by exploiting the magnetoelectric effect at the interface between the ferroelectric barrier and a magnetic La1-xSrxMnO3 electrode. Using first-principles density-functional theory we demonstrate that a few magnetic monolayers of La1-xSrxMnO3 near the interface act, in response to ferroelectric polarization reversal, as an atomic-scale spin valve by filtering spin-dependent current. This produces more than an order of magnitude change in conductance, and thus constitutes a giant resistive switching effect.

Search For Ultrahigh Energy Neutrinos In Highly Inclined Events At The Pierre Auger Observatory, P. Abreu, Emily B. Petermann, Gregory Snow, Pierre Auger Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

The Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to neutrinos of all flavors above 0.1 EeV. These interact through charged and neutral currents in the atmosphere giving rise to extensive air showers. When interacting deeply in the atmosphere at nearly horizontal incidence, neutrinos can be distinguished from regular hadronic cosmic rays by the broad time structure of their shower signals in the water-Cherenkov detectors. In this paper we present for the first time an analysis based on down-going neutrinos. We describe the search procedure, the possible sources of background, the method to compute the exposure and the associated …

Constant improvements in the field of surveying, computing and distribution of digital-content are reshaping the way Cultural Heritage can be digitised and virtually accessed, even remotely via web. A traditional 2D approach for data access, exploration, retrieval and exploration may generally suffice, however more complex analyses concerning spatial and temporal features require 3D tools, which, in some cases, have not yet been implemented or are not yet generally commercially available. Efficient organisation and integration strategies applicable to the wide array of heterogeneous data in the field of Cultural Heritage represent a hot research topic nowadays. This article presents a visualisation …
