Finance For Growth And Policy Options For Emerging And Developing Economies: Nigeria., W. Olayiwola, H. Okodua
Finance For Growth And Policy Options For Emerging And Developing Economies: Nigeria., W. Olayiwola, H. Okodua
Economic and Financial Review
The analysis in the paper clearly revealed that finance is important for a sustainable economic growth. It also shows that financial policies designed in various EME countries had the main aim of making the financial system provide financial functions. However, there are large differences in how well the financial system in each country performed these functions. Also, it is well noted that what matters to economic growth is access to financial services and not who supplies them, whether it is private sector as in South Africa and Nigeria or the combination of public and private sectors as in China. The …

Chemistry Faculty Publications
The volatile compounds in the headspace of twenty-four commercial virgin coconut oil (VCO) samples prepared by different methods (i.e. expeller, centrifugation, and fermentation with and without heat) were analyzed by solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME-GCMS). The following volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified: ethyl acetate, acetic acid, 2-pentanone, hexanal, n-octane, 2-heptanone, limonene, nonanal, octanoic acid, ethyl octanoate, δ-octalactone, ethyl decanoate, δ-decalactone, and dodecanoic acid. Fermentation-produced samples were found to have higher levels of acetic acid and free fatty acids in the headspace compared to VCO produced using the centrifuge and expeller methods. Descriptive sensory analysis of the VCO …

Polymer composites of core-shell morphology are commonly used in the paint industry as opacity enhancer. These are usually made of block copolymer systems wherein the core is formed from a polymer that swells in the presence of a solvent and surrounded by a high glass transition polymeric shell. Thus, upon drying, the swollen regions turn into voids while leaving a hard shell. Here, composites based on poly(methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) [P(MMA-BuA)] (seed stage), poly(methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid) [P(MMA-MAA)] (second stage), and poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA] (third stage) were synthesized through a multistage sequential emulsion polymerization and their opacity was investigated. The second stage …

Toward A Constructive Engagement: Agricultural Biotechnology As A Public Health Incentive In Less-Developed Countries, Chidi Oguamanam
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Discourses on global public health crises, especially as they impact the less-developed world, focus mostly on the issue of access to life-saving drugs for needy populations. Also, they implicate the misalignment of global pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) agenda with the health needs of the poor. Equally attracting significant attention is the role of intellectual property in driving up the cost of drugs and exacerbating the drug access freeze to needy populations. More often, the conceptual strings of these discussions are woven around a complex interaction of themes, including those of globalization, the development narrative, and strategic changes in international …

Legitimate Exercises Of The Police Power Or Compensable Takings: Courts May Recognize Private Property Rights, Terence J. Centner
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Under their police power, governments regulate nuisances and take actions in emergency situations. For protecting humans, animals, and plants from diseases and other pests (jointly referred to as diseases), governments order inoculations, quarantine items and people, and seize and destroy property.' With respect to plants and animals, the United States Secretary of Agriculture is authorized to prohibit the importation and movement of items than may be infested. The Secretary also has the authority to hold, treat, and destroy items to prevent the dissemination of plant and animal pests. State governments take additional actions to prevent the introduction and dissemination of …

Entrepreneurs And Their Companies In A Post-Entrepreneurial World, Larry Griffith
Entrepreneurs And Their Companies In A Post-Entrepreneurial World, Larry Griffith
Student Scholarship
The integration of an entrepreneur into another organization is considered by many to be a difficult or even impossible task. At the same time entrepreneurs are potentially valuable resources for any organization seeking to gain competitive advantage, enter new markets, or to find effective means to resolve standing managerial issues. One method of successful integration demands smooth meshing of the entrepreneur's company and its employees into the new organization. We examine conditions for such smooth transition. Two significant findings emerge. First specific entrepreneurial skills and capabilities, which allow entrepreneurs to be successful in their new role, are similar to those …

Financing Inclusive Growth In Nigeria: Challenges And Prospects, P. I. Esenwah
Financing Inclusive Growth In Nigeria: Challenges And Prospects, P. I. Esenwah
Economic and Financial Review
In this paper, the author lays a great deal of emphasis on the importance Inclusive Growth (IG). Inclusive Growth is growth in its entirety, holistic and comprehensive, including everything. It could be broad-based growth across sectors, shared growth and pro-poor growth. Inclusive growth can be described as economic growth with widest participation and benefits best shared through equal opportunities. It is concerned with opportunities for the majority of the labour force, poor and middle-class alike to participate in the production of goods and services rather than in income redistribution as was done in India some years ago. Inclusive growth is …

Financing Infrastructure And Growth: Lessons And Experience., M. Ahmed
Financing Infrastructure And Growth: Lessons And Experience., M. Ahmed
Economic and Financial Review
Infrastructure forms the foundation for all development in a country. Inadequate infrastructure restricts productivity and limits competitiveness. A 2008 Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA) study identified the dearth of infrastructure, amongst many other constraints, as responsible for Nigeria‘s low level of performance in all the key economic performance variables. Indeed, Nigeria‘s diminished competitiveness (127 of 142) could be directly attributed to the abysmal level of infrastructure development in the country. Nigeria‘s stock of basic infrastructure falls far short of the minimum required for meeting the demands of a 21st-century global economy. The paper would address the issue of finance for …

Quantitative Comparison Of Cis-Regulatory Element (Cre) Activities In Transgenic Drosophila Melanogaster, William A. Rogers, Thomas M. Williams
Biology Faculty Publications
Gene expression patterns are specified by cis-regulatory element (CRE) sequences, which are also called enhancers or cis-regulatory modules. A typical CRE possesses an arrangement of binding sites for several transcription factor proteins that confer a regulatory logic specifying when, where, and at what level the regulated gene(s) is expressed. The full set of CREs within an animal genome encodes the organism′s program for development1, and empirical as well as theoretical studies indicate that mutations in CREs played a prominent role in morphological evolution2-4. Moreover, human genome wide association studies indicate that genetic variation in CREs …

Comparing biological sequences remains one of the most vital activities in Bioinformatics. Comparing biological sequences would address the relatedness between species, and find similar structures that might lead to similar functions.
Sequence alignment is the default method, and has been used in the domain for over four decades. It gained a lot of trust, but limitations and even failure has been reported, especially with the new generated genomes. These new generated genomes have bigger size, and to some extent suffer errors. Such errors come mainly as a result from the sequencing machine. These sequencing errors should be considered when submitting …

Ancestral Analysis Of The French Colonial Moran Cemetery, Biloxi, Mississippi, Danielle Nicole Cook
Ancestral Analysis Of The French Colonial Moran Cemetery, Biloxi, Mississippi, Danielle Nicole Cook
Master's Theses
The Moran site (22HR511) in Biloxi, Mississippi, dates from 1719 to 1723 and is the earliest known French Colonial cemetery in the United States. Historical records suggest that those interred likely represent immigrants from Western Europe as well as Africa who were relocated in an effort to colonize the Louisiana Territory. Given the variety of cultural backgrounds at the site, an ancestral analysis of the 25 individuals uncovered has been conducted. Traditional markers such as cranial and tooth morphology and metrics, and enamel composition, were evaluated in all individuals, and DNA was analyzed in five. Stable isotope levels were also …

9-Anthraldehyde-N(4)-methylthiosemicarbazone (MeATSC), potassium (E)-2-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)propanoate (K[(Sal-L-tryp)] and 2-(2-hydroxybenzylamino)-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)propanoic acid (the reduced Schiff base) were prepared using known synthetic procedures. Two novel thiosemicarbazone ligands, (E)-N-ethyl-2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide (N-Ethhymethohcarbthio) and (E)-N-ethyl-2-(1-(thiazol-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide (acetylethTSC), were also prepared. All ligands were characterized by FT IR and electrochemistry. N-Ethhymethohcarbthio were characterized by elemental analysis whereas the reduced Schiff base and K[(Sal-L-tryp)] were characterized by ESI MS. X-ray crystallography was also used to characterize acetylethTSC. The ligands were then reacted with [VO(Sal-L-tryp)(H2O)] (1) (Sal-L-tryp = N-salicylidene-L-tryptophanate) to produce the …
Continuous Analysis Of Photocatalytic Activity In Thin-Films And Coatings, Steven Michael Allee
Continuous Analysis Of Photocatalytic Activity In Thin-Films And Coatings, Steven Michael Allee
Master's Theses
Materials that undergo photocatalytic reactions create evolved gases due to ultraviolet light decomposition. Current methods of measuring these gases typically result in destruction of the sample. A test fixture was developed to measure evolved gases in a nondestructive manner through the utilization of a flow-through sensor array system. Preliminary testing indicates responsive measurements down to parts-per-billion sensitivity for some gases and will be compared with mass spectrometry measurements. Further development of this process could lead to the ability to measure photocatalytic reaction gases on a continuous basis without interruption of the process or destruction of materials introduced to the system.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A key feature of social media is that it allows individuals and businesses to contribute contents for public viewing. However, little is known about how content providers derive payoffs from such activities. In this study, we build a dynamic structural model to recover the utility function for content providers. Our model distinguishes short-term payoffs based on ad revenue sharing from long-term payoffs driven by content providers’ reputation. The model was estimated using a panel data of 914 top 1000 providers and 381 randomly selected providers on YouTube from Jun 7th, 2010, to Aug 7th, 2011. The two different sets of …
