Development Of A Strontium-87 Ion Interferometer, Christopher Joseph Erickson
Development Of A Strontium-87 Ion Interferometer, Christopher Joseph Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
I present the construction of a low-velocity intense source (LVIS) of laser-cooled neutral strontium using permanent ring magnets. The LVIS consists of a magneto-optical trap from which cold strontium is extracted in a well-collimated beam. I also present the development and implementation of a full suite of low-noise, high-bandwidth laser control electronics including a microcontroller unit. This microcontroller remotely controls and monitors the current driver, temperature controller, and PID lock circuit for each diode laser simultaneously. The current driver output is accurate to within 2 micro-amps and repeatable to with a few nano-amps. The noise spectral density of the current …

Intellectual Property, Copyright, And Piracy: A Cultural View, Steven W. Staninger
Intellectual Property, Copyright, And Piracy: A Cultural View, Steven W. Staninger
Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship
Religion plays a major role in determining culture, and has an important effect on how laws are both written and enforced. The concept of intellectual property varies in different cultural traditions, and the dominant religion of a culture plays a major role in the how copyright is viewed and if it is respected or enforced. This paper briefly evaluates the cultures of three major religious and intellectual traditions to determine what, if any, effect their beliefs and values have on the respect for and enforcement of laws defending intellectual property and copyright.
Acquisition Of Spanish Voiceless Stops In Extended Stays Abroad, Mary Williams Crane
Acquisition Of Spanish Voiceless Stops In Extended Stays Abroad, Mary Williams Crane
Theses and Dissertations
Although English and Spanish both have the voiceless stops /ptk/, they differ in VOT; English has long-lag voiceless stops and Spanish has short-lag. This difference means that native English-speaking learners of Spanish are likely to transfer the long voice lag typical of their first language (L1) to Spanish voiceless stops. This study measured the VOT of 20 native English-speaking learners of Spanish, each with a length of residence (LOR) in a Spanish-speaking country of almost 2 years. The study participants were found to produce voiceless stops intermediate to the averages of their L1 (American English) and L2 (Spanish), with some …

In 1988 I made a radical decision to start a 10 year Performance Project. The main premise for this project was that my life was art and I was going to collect one evidence of my living, at the end of the day for 10 years. I decided that this evidence was going to be a mental map (Figure 2) of my walks during the day. I also decided that I would never exhibit in commercial galleries, or in spaces where fees where charged. This project has been extended since the year 2000 and it will only stop at the …
Tension And Contradiction In Agrarian Reform And Rural Reconstruction In Post-Monarch Nepal, Arjun Karki
Tension And Contradiction In Agrarian Reform And Rural Reconstruction In Post-Monarch Nepal, Arjun Karki
South South Forum 南南論壇
Agrarian reform and land reform are usually understood synonymously as they are embedded with the unequal agrarian structure in Nepal. A widespread objective of agrarian reform is to promote social justice by equitable distribution of land and resources. Agrarian reform includes the restructuring of land tenure, the means of production, and the provision of support services to the farmers and rural inhabitants.
In Nepal land is the principle determinant for classifying people into distinct classes. Due to the various state-led land grants, unequal socio-economic relations and growing population density, little ‘free’ land is available these days (Karki, 2001). More than …

Peasant Movement To Constitute Life-Affirming Communities In Bangladesh = 孟加拉國重視生命的農民運動, Farhad Mazhar Muzharul Hug
South South Forum 南南論壇
Led by small scale farming communities of Bangladesh, biodiversity-based ecological agriculture, known as Nayakrishi Andolon (New Agricultural Movement), has become popular as a peasant movement. It is not a 'traditional' farming practice in a static sense but aims at enhancing capacity of the farming communities to absorb advances in environmental, ecological and biological sciences and recent knowledge of increasing climatic variability. It is done without compromising the life affirming wisdom of popular culture of rural Bangladesh and without displacing the historical experience and capacity of the agrarian civilisation. The movement envisions an ecological civilization and by its agrarian practice intends …

In the Andean countries of South America, the current political situation is determined by the need to find a new model of development, different and alternative to that imposed by neoliberal policies. This new situation includes the recognition by States of the cultural and ethnic diversity of population and, as an element of that, the need to guarantee specific rights to indigenous peoples effectively, with new public institutions and adequate resources, among the proposals that some authors call the new "multicultural constitutionalism".
This official recognition is a result of the struggles and demands of the indigenous movement, in their process …
Reflective Thinking In Elementary Preservice Teacher Portfolios: Can It Be Measured And Taught?, Rebecca Pennington
Reflective Thinking In Elementary Preservice Teacher Portfolios: Can It Be Measured And Taught?, Rebecca Pennington
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
This study examined whether teacher portfolios can be validly and reliably assessed by investigating the effect of an instructional tool on increasing the level of reflective thinking in elementary preservice teachers’ portfolios. It also examined whether reflective thinking in preservice teachers’ electronic portfolios represented sufficient quality to make them useful in practice. The Rubric for Evaluating Portfolio Reflective Thinking instrument developed for this study demonstrated moderate levels of interrater reliability (r = .66) and sufficient content validity to be used to measure reflective thinking. Also, members of the treatment group scored significantly higher on five of the six portfolio domains …

The Allure Of The Freshman Girl: Peers, Partying, And The Sexual Assault Of First-Year College Women, Brian N. Sweeney
The Allure Of The Freshman Girl: Peers, Partying, And The Sexual Assault Of First-Year College Women, Brian N. Sweeney
Faculty of Sociology/Anthropology Publications
Although sexual assault has long been recognized as a problem among college students, little attention has been paid to why first-year women are the most likely to be assaulted. In this article the author drew on two studies of college students to analyze peer culture and the organization of gender and sexuality within a college party scene. Within this scene, fraternity men’s masculine identities and peer status were linked to their ability to hook up with women. However, strong sexual double standards stigmatized many sexually active women, reducing their appeal as sexual partners. In contrast, men saw first-year women were …

Paleomagnetic Constraints On Deformation Of Superfast-Spread Oceanic Crust Exposed At Pito Deep Rift, Andrew J. Horst, R. J. Varga, J. S. Gee, J. A. Karson
Natural Resources and Earth Sciences Faculty Research
The uppermost oceanic crust produced at the superfast spreading (∼142 km Ma −1, full‐spreading rate) southern East Pacific Rise (EPR) during the Gauss Chron is exposed in a tectonic window along the northeastern wall of the Pito Deep Rift. Paleomagnetic analysis of fully oriented dike (62) and gabbro (5) samples from two adjacent study areas yield bootstrapped mean remanence directions of 38.9° ± 8.1°, −16.7° ± 15.6°, n = 23 (Area A) and 30.4° ± 8.0°, −25.1° ± 12.9°, n = 44 (Area B), both are significantly distinct from the Geocentric Axial Dipole expected direction at 23° S. Regional tectonics …

The Aging Services Network: Serving A Vulnerable And Growing Elderly Population In Tough Economic Times, Carol O'Shaughnessy
The Aging Services Network: Serving A Vulnerable And Growing Elderly Population In Tough Economic Times, Carol O'Shaughnessy
National Health Policy Forum
In 1965, Congress enacted the Older Americans Act, establishing a federal agency and state agencies to address the social services needs of the aging population. The mission of the Older Americans Act is broad: to help older people maintain maximum independence in their homes and communities and to promote a continuum of care for the vulnerable elderly. In successive amendments, the Act created area agencies on aging and a host of social support programs. The "aging services network," broadly described, refers to the agencies, programs, and activities that are sponsored by the Older Americans Act. The Act’s funding for services …
Explaining Investment Policies In Microstates: The Case Of The Fiji Islands, Sudarsan Kant
Explaining Investment Policies In Microstates: The Case Of The Fiji Islands, Sudarsan Kant
Dissertations
Prevailing theories have failed to take into account the development of policy and institutions in microstates that are engineered to attract investments in areas of comparative advantage as these small islands confront the challenges of globalization and instead have emphasized migration, remittances and foreign aid (MIRAB) as an explanation for the survival of microstates in the global economy. This dissertation challenges the MIRAB model as an adequate explanation of investment strategy in microstates and argues that comparative advantage is a better theory to explain policy behavior of microstates. These small economies can take advantage of their exotic locations and natural …

Everything I Need To Know About Family Law I Learned From Teen Mom: Part Two In A Two-Part Series, Joanna L. Grossman
Everything I Need To Know About Family Law I Learned From Teen Mom: Part Two In A Two-Part Series, Joanna L. Grossman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The lives of teen parents are often complicated, as we see depicted over and over again in the MTV reality show Teen Mom. Although this show is not about law (Law and Order: Teen Mom might be an interesting new spinoff, however), the teen mothers find themselves in a variety of family law controversies in the natural course of things. In this column, I’ll consider just a sampling of the legal issues raised on the show, including those related to legal fatherhood, parental rights, child custody, domestic violence, and open adoption.
