Hydrological Parameter Estimations From A Conservative Tracer Test With Variable-Density Effects At The Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site, B. Dafflon, Warren Barrash, Michael Cardiff, T. C. Johnson
CGISS Publications and Presentations
Reliable predictions of groundwater flow and solute transport require an estimation of the detailed distribution of the parameters (e.g., hydraulic conductivity, effective porosity) controlling these processes. However, such parameters are difficult to estimate because of the inaccessibility and complexity of the subsurface. In this regard, developments in parameter estimation techniques and investigations of field experiments are still challenging and necessary to improve our understanding and the prediction of hydrological processes. Here we analyze a conservative tracer test conducted at the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site in 2001 in a heterogeneous unconfined fluvial aquifer. Some relevant characteristics of this test include: variable-density …

Western Faculty Members' Cross-Border Lived Experiences, Xin Bu, Bill Mccaw, Patty Kero
Higher Learning Research Communications
Universities in China and the United States have been engaged in cross-border education through partnerships establishing international branch campuses (IBCs). This qualitative study used Moustakas’s (1994) strategy of inquiry as a framework and explored Western faculty members’ cross-border lived experiences at IBCs in China. IBCs in this study were coestablished by American universities and their Chinese partners. The central research question that guided this study asked about the lived experiences of Western faculty members at IBCs in China. This study purposefully selected 14 participants and data were collected through semistructured, one-on-one, face-to-face interviews. Moustakas’s (1994) seven-level method of analysis involving …

The Nature And Extent Of The French Resistance Against Nazi Occupation During World War Ii, Jeffrey Folker
The Nature And Extent Of The French Resistance Against Nazi Occupation During World War Ii, Jeffrey Folker
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Comprehensively covers a very misunderstood and myth-laden part of the history of WWII. Folker makes it clear, from a comprehensive review of primary and secondary literature, that the resistance offered by the French to Nazi Occupation was largely insignificant and its effectiveness overblown during and after the war.
Is Islam The Solution?: The Muslim Brotherhood And The Search For An Islamic Democracy In Egypt, Erica Devine
Is Islam The Solution?: The Muslim Brotherhood And The Search For An Islamic Democracy In Egypt, Erica Devine
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Since the removal of President Mubarak in 2011, the role of the Muslim Brotherhood as a political force within Egypt has grown exponentially. These events have called into question the role the Muslim Brotherhood will play in the creation of a new government in Egypt. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Brotherhood underwent a gradual transformation of its ideology in the direction of democracy and political participation. The influence of such ideologues as Hasan al-Banna, Hasan Isma‘il al-Hudaybi, Umar al-Tilmisani, and Yusef al-Qaradawi provided the foundation for this transition and spurred the movement towards the blending of civil and religious agendas. …
The Use Of Various Failure Criteria As Applied To High Speed Wear, David A. Huber
The Use Of Various Failure Criteria As Applied To High Speed Wear, David A. Huber
Theses and Dissertations
This research has been aimed at developing methods to predict mechanical wear of sliding bodies at high velocities. Specifically, wear of test sled slippers at the Holloman High Speed Test Track at Holloman AFB, NM, is being considered. Developing a numerical model to represent the velocity range achieved at the test track is infeasible, so numerical modeling techniques must be adopted. Previous research has made use of finite element codes to simulate the high velocity sliding event. However, the extreme velocities at the test track can create numerical errors in the finite element codes. To avoid the numerical errors, an …
Freedom In Education: The Movement To Educate The Freedmen In The Pee Dee Region During Reconstruction, Aliyyah Willis
Freedom In Education: The Movement To Educate The Freedmen In The Pee Dee Region During Reconstruction, Aliyyah Willis
Honors Theses
The current scholarship on the education of the freed slaves in the South during Reconstruction is not so much one of differing points of view, but of specialization within the broader topic. Most of this scholarship focuses on the Southern region as a whole, rather than limiting the scope to just one state or smaller geographic area. Instead of arguing for or against a particular point of view, today's historians are focusing on one part of the larger topic to analyze. Whether studying the people themselves and their motivations, the teachers who educated them, or the system of education that …
Lagrange's Theory Of Analytical Functions And His Ideal Of Purity Of Method, Giovanni Ferraro, Marco Panza
Lagrange's Theory Of Analytical Functions And His Ideal Of Purity Of Method, Giovanni Ferraro, Marco Panza
MPP Published Research
We reconstruct essential features of Lagrange’s theory of analytical functions by exhibiting its structure and basic assumptions, as well as its main shortcomings. We explain Lagrange’s notions of function and algebraic quantity, and we concentrate on power-series expansions, on the algorithm for derivative functions, and the remainder theorem—especially on the role this theorem has in solving geometric and mechanical problems. We thus aim to provide a better understanding of Enlightenment mathematics and to show that the foundations of mathematics did not, for Lagrange, concern the solidity of its ultimate bases, but rather purity of method—the generality and internal organization of …
A Union Of Negatives: Ayatollah Khomeini And The Mobilization Of Dissent In The Iranian Revolution Of 1979, Nicholas G. Sumski
A Union Of Negatives: Ayatollah Khomeini And The Mobilization Of Dissent In The Iranian Revolution Of 1979, Nicholas G. Sumski
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
The Islamic Revolution of 1979 eradicated half a century of Westernization in Iran and installed Ayatollah Khomeini as the leader of Iran’s new Islamic Republic. However, the revolutionary forces were not strongly unified under Khomeini’s radical Islamic vision. Indeed, many facets of the opposition simply desired moderate political reforms to increase democratic participation in the government and opposed the imposition of a government directed under the auspices of Islam. By the late 1970s, though, these various moderate revolutionaries realized that the only legitimate means to overthrow the reign of the American-supported Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, would be to join the …

Modeling The Miocene Climatic Optimum. Part I: Land And Atmosphere, N. Herold, Matthew Huber, R. D. Müller
Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications
This study presents results from the Community Climate System Model 3 (CCSM3) forced with early to middle Miocene (~20–14 Ma) vegetation, topography, bathymetry, and modern CO2. A decrease in the meridional temperature gradient of 6.5°C and an increase in global mean temperature of 1.5°C are modeled in comparison with a control simulation forced with modern boundary conditions. Seasonal poleward displacements of the subtropical jet streams and storm tracks compared to the control simulation are associated with changes in Hadley circulation and significant cooling of the polar stratosphere, consistent with previously predicted effects of global warming. Energy budget calculations …

Beyond Alliances: The Jewish Role In Reshaping The Racial Landscape Of Southern California, George J. Sanchez
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
This volume focuses on the special role that Jews played in reshaping the racial landscape of southern California in the twentieth century. Rather than considering this issue in terms of broad analyses of organizations or communities, each contribution instead approaches it by examining the activity of a single Jewish individual, and how he or she navigated the social terrain of a changing southern California. In particular, this volume is one of the first to take seriously the unique racial/ethnic makeup of southern California for Jewish activism, with a particular focus on the relationship between Jews and Mexican Americans in the …

El Paso is a bicultural, bilingual community with a 76.6% Hispanic population. Combining El Paso’s population with that of its sister city, Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, our community is the largest metropolitan area on any international border in the world. Students at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) are mostly female, and 50% of the total student population is made up of first-generation college students. These demographics are accompanied by low socioeconomic and educational factors: 23.6% of local families live below the poverty level, compared to 12.5% nationally; 32.9% of 25-year-olds have not graduated from high school; 19% of …
Coupled Radiation-Gasdynamic Solution Method For Hypersonic Shock Layers In Thermochemical Nonequilibrium, Christopher L. Martin Jr.
Coupled Radiation-Gasdynamic Solution Method For Hypersonic Shock Layers In Thermochemical Nonequilibrium, Christopher L. Martin Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to develop a highly accurate computational method for calculating the nonequilibrium radiative heat transfer within reentry shock layers. The nonequilibrium state of the flowfield was solved using the multispecies multitemperature nonequilibrium flow solver NH7AIR which is capable of separately tracking the vibrational energy of each diatomic species and the energy of the free electrons. The calculation of radiative heat transfer was performed by utilizing the detailed line-by-line spectral radiation solver SPRADIAN. Two radiative transport schemes were implemented in this coupled code. The first scheme was the standard tangent slab solution method. The second scheme …
Female Spectators In The July Monarchy And Henry Scheffer's Entrée De Jeanne D’Arc À Orléans, Kalisha Roberts
Female Spectators In The July Monarchy And Henry Scheffer's Entrée De Jeanne D’Arc À Orléans, Kalisha Roberts
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I consider Henry Scheffer's Entrée de Jeanne d’Arc à Orléans, le 8 mai 1429 (1843) in relation to female audiences of the July Monarchy. As a part of the larger Galerie des Batailles in the Musée Historique instituted in 1837 by Louis-Philippe, Entrée de Jeanne d'Arc has been addressed relative to the political objectives of the monarchy. Limited scholarship surrounding the Galerie des Batailles has focused on its evolution from royal apartments in the château de Versailles to public museum. However, the broadening of audiences during the July Monarchy and potential points of engagement between viewer and …
Influences Of Discharge Reductions On Salt Water Intrusion And Residual Circulation In Danshuei River, Wen-Cheng Liu, Wei-Bo Chen, Ming-Hsi Hsu
Influences Of Discharge Reductions On Salt Water Intrusion And Residual Circulation In Danshuei River, Wen-Cheng Liu, Wei-Bo Chen, Ming-Hsi Hsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A three-dimensional, unstructured grid, hydrodynamic model was established and applied to study the salt water intrusion and residual circulation in the Danshuei River estuarine system of northern Taiwan. The construction of two reservoirs (i.e. Shihmen Reservoir and Feitsui Reservoir) and water diversion in the upper reaches of the river system significantly reduces the freshwater inflow. The changes had contributed farther to the intrusion of tidal flow and salt water in the upstream direction. The model was validated with available hydrographic data measured in 2001 then used to probe the change in salt water intrusion as a result of reservoir construction. …

The Female Experience: Study Abroad Students In Egypt, Heather Raquael Walsh
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explores the experiences of female students on study abroad programs, with the aim of answering the following questions: do they face unique challenges as female students (including harassment or assault), how do they avoid or cope with any negative experiences, and can we as language departments better prepare our students to have the best experiences possible? The participants for the study were primarily 12 of 50 students involved in the Brigham Young University Study Abroad to Cairo, Egypt during Spring and Summer terms 2010. Data include participant observation, student journals, and ethnographic interviews conducted during the last …
The Relationship Between Elementary Principals' Conceptualizations Of Instructional Leadership And Their Perceived Use Of Time, Mardel S. Higginson
The Relationship Between Elementary Principals' Conceptualizations Of Instructional Leadership And Their Perceived Use Of Time, Mardel S. Higginson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to learn about how elementary principals conceptualized instructional leadership and whether the way they thought about leadership influenced their allotted use of time for instructional leadership. In order to answer this question, two sub-questions needed to be answered about how elementary principals conceptualized instructional leadership and how elementary principals perceived they used their time. This mixed-method study interviewed 30 principals in an urban-suburban school district in Utah to produce data. Each principal participated in a newly constructed survey of 84 questions. The survey consisted of four parts including demographics, open-ended questions about instructional leadership, …
