Abstract Background/purpose The design and materials of a prosthesis affect the loading of dental implants and deformation of the bone. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of prosthesis design and materials on the stress distribution of implant-supported prostheses. Host-selective toxins, or necrotrophic effectors, are important determinants of disease in both wheat-Stagonospora nodorum and wheat- Pyrenophora tritici-repentis pathosystems. This study describes the identification, validation, and genomic analysis of compatible host gene-effector interactions in these systems. In the wheat-S. nodorum system, the Snn4-SnTox4 interaction was identified and validated using the hexaploid wheat ( Tri ti cum aestivum L.) recombinant inbred populations 'Arina' x 'Forno' ( AF) and Salamouni x 'Katepwa' (SK), respectively. The single dominant gene, Snn4, which mapped to the short arm of chromosome 1 A in both populations, governs sensitivity to the proteinaceous effector, SnTox4, which is estimated …

This article discusses the current progress and solutions to the symbol grounding problem and specifically identifies which aspects of the problem have been addressed and issues and scientific challenges that still require investigation. In particular, the paper suggests that of the various aspects of the symbol grounding problem, the transition from indexical representations to symbol-symbol relationships requires the most research. This analysis initiated a debate and solicited commentaries from experts in the field to gather consensus on progress and achievements and identify the challenges still open in the symbol grounding problem.

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) is widely acknowledged as an effective method to ensure product quality and control foodbome hazards. This paper describes a study of observed relationships between the design of a preservice mathematics methods course with accompanying field practicum and changes in the extent to which participating preservice teachers identified themselves with the mathematics reform movement after becoming inservice teachers. The curriculum of the course with its embedded field practicum experiences was designed to support preservice teachers in interweaving methods coursework and pedagogical instruction with classroom practice. University and public school structures were interwoven by conducting weekly mathematics methods course sessions held at a public school site followed immediately by related classroom practicum experiences. I first describe competitive and cooperative approaches to argumentation, and I claim that cooperative argumentation aligns with the rhetorical tradition yet needs to be developed further. I focus on civil rhetoric as one form of cooperative argumentation. Building off the abstract description of civility offered by Theresa Enos and Kathleen Blake Yancey, I move to the practical level. Blending a quantitative and qualitative approach, I analyze students' writing from an anthology assignment (which pairs collaboration and argumentation) to determine: What kind of civility moves does the anthology assignment foster? The concept of zeta-potential has been used for more than a century as a basic parameter in controlling the stability of colloidal suspensions, irrespective of the nature of their particulate ingredients – organic or inorganic. In this paper, I argue that an embodied cognition theorist has resources available to her to fulfill the explanatory role of communicative intention without postulating inner, private intentions, as is typically done by cognitivists. I argue for this conclusion by identifying a publicity requirement and a sensitivity requirement that must be satisfied by realizers of communicative intentions a theoretical posit that explains the difference between linguistic meaning, as in John means cats are mammals by his utterance cats are mammals, and other sorts of meaning, as in that bell means the train doors are closing. Pre-Harvest Sprouting (PHS) can cause severe economic loss in wheat grown across many areas of the world. Prolonged rainfall before harvest and high temperatures can contribute to the occurrence of PHS. Grain growers prefer wheat genotypes with low susceptibility to PHS. The objective of this study was to examine the physicochemical properties of Hard Red Spring Wheat (HRSW) and Hard White Spring Wheat (HWSW) affected by PHS. In section two, I analyze Obama's "New Beginning" speech in which he attempts to improve relations between the United States and the Muslim world and find that Obama's speech fulfills the requirements ofNeo-Aristotelian analysis and benefits from Obama's ability to view the world from different perspectives. There has been an increase of confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) generating large amounts of manure. When this manure is not handled properly, it generates greenhouse gases (GHGs), odors and water pollution. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is touted as an acceptable approach to address manure management and associated environmental problems. Biogas production from manure alone is limited by low volumes of biogas yield, thus it has a poor economic reputation. This is especially true for the relations between Tajikistan, upstream, and Uzbekistan, downstream, on the Amudarya River. Major controversy exists over constructing Rogun Dam on the Vakhsh River, a tributary of the Amudarya River. Aphthona spp. flea beetles were released in the Little Missouri National Grasslands (LMNG) in western North Dakota in 1999 to control leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.). The changes in soil seed bank composition and leafy spurge density were evaluated on two ecological sites five (2004) and ten years (2009) after Aphthona spp. release to monitor the effectiveness of the insects on weed control and associated change in plant communities. In 2009, leafy spurge stem density averaged 2 and 9 stems m-2 in the loamy overflow and loamy sites, respectively, compared to 110 and 78 stems m-2, respectively, in 1999 and …

Recent experimental work involving Dictyostelium discoideum seems to contradict several theoretical models. Experiments suggest that localization of the release of the chemoattractant cyclic adenosine monophosphate to the uropod of the cell is important for stream formation during aggregation. Yet several mathematical models are able to reproduce streaming as the cells aggregate without taking into account localization of the chemoattractant. A careful analysis of the experiments and the theory suggests the two major features of the system which are important to stream formation are random cell motion and chemotaxis to regions of higher cell density. This study examines the process of marital reconciliation. More specifically, it addresses gender influences regarding perceptions of the marital reconciliation process. Also, this study identifies how turning points in the process of marital reconciliation are similar and different between the partners in the marital dyad. A qualitative methodology was used to better understand gender similarities and differences in marital reconciliation. This study utilized a phenomenological approach to examine adult children's views of how their fathers connected with them as children. Participants consisted of 10 men and 12 women between the ages of 30 and 60 who were interviewed about connection experiences with their fathers. Participants completed interviews related to their perspectives on being fathered, experiences as a son or daughter, and what they experienced in connecting with their fathers. Findings indicated that fathers connect with children through a variety of contexts that include memorable occasions, activities, personal interactions, routines, events, and other means. Individual cuttings from five shrub species were burned over a flat-flame burner under wind conditions of 0.75–2.80m s-1. Both live and dead cuttings were used. These included single leaves from broadleaf species as well as 3 to 5 cm-long branches from coniferous and small broadleaf species. Flame angles and flame lengths were determined by semi-automated measurements of video images. Additional data, such as times and temperatures corresponding to ignition, maximum flame height and burnout were determined using video and infrared images. Flame angles correlated linearly with wind velocity. They also correlated with the Froude number when either the …

The authors provide a primer on meta-analysis. Topics are covered at an introductory level and references are provided for readers wanting further information. Topics covered include literature search procedures, coding manuals and extracting information from studies, calculating effect sizes, combining effect sizes, fixed and random effects analysis, influence analysis, moderator analysis, multivariate meta-analysis, and publication bias. All analyses are illustrated using k= 18 behavioral marital therapy versus control studies. Digital Technology And The Variation In Design Routines: A Sequence Analysis Of Four Design Processes, James Gaskin, B. Veeresh Thummadi, Kalle Lyytinen, Youngjin Yoo

We advance a theory of design process variation across organizational types and the effects of digitalization on these processes. We argue that design routines are subject to greater variation within and between organizations as organizations embed increasingly rich repertoires of digital capabilities in their design activities. Using a sequence analysis method we compare design process variation in four organizations to examine how design routines vary due to differences in embedded digital capabilities and organization of the design process. Our analysis reveals new insights on the effects organizational context and digitalization have on design routine composition.
