Bilateral Cervical Ectopic Thymic Nodules With Accessory Thyroid Tissue And An Ectopic Parathyroid In The Neck Region, Wea-Lung Lin, Chung-Hung Tsai, Chun-Lan Liu, Lien-Chuan Yang, Wan-Ru Chao Jan 2011

Bilateral Cervical Ectopic Thymic Nodules With Accessory Thyroid Tissue And An Ectopic Parathyroid In The Neck Region, Wea-Lung Lin, Chung-Hung Tsai, Chun-Lan Liu, Lien-Chuan Yang, Wan-Ru Chao

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Some remnants of thymic tissue may be deposited along the pathway of the descent of the neck during embryologic development of the thymus. Ectopic thymic tissue is usually deposited along the pathway from the mandibular angle to the manubrium of the sternum. Most reported cases of an ectopic thymus occurred in children, and cases are less common in adults. We report a 26-year-old woman, who was incidentally found to have 2 neck nodules on the posterior side of the bilateral upper pole of the thyroid gland while undergoing a subtotal thyroidectomy. The left-side neck nodule showed accessory thyroid follicles …

Genomic Analysis Of Tan Spot And Stagonospora Nodorum Blotch Resistance In Wheat, Nilwala Shyamen Abeysekara Jan 2011

Genomic Analysis Of Tan Spot And Stagonospora Nodorum Blotch Resistance In Wheat, Nilwala Shyamen Abeysekara

Genomics and Bioinformatics

Host-selective toxins, or necrotrophic effectors, are important determinants of disease in both wheat-Stagonospora nodorum and wheat- Pyrenophora tritici-repentis pathosystems. This study describes the identification, validation, and genomic analysis of compatible host gene-effector interactions in these systems. In the wheat-S. nodorum system, the Snn4-SnTox4 interaction was identified and validated using the hexaploid wheat ( Tri ti cum aestivum L.) recombinant inbred populations 'Arina' x 'Forno' ( AF) and Salamouni x 'Katepwa' (SK), respectively. The single dominant gene, Snn4, which mapped to the short arm of chromosome 1 A in both populations, governs sensitivity to the proteinaceous effector, SnTox4, which is estimated …

The Structural And Conceptual Interweaving Of Mathematics Methods Coursework And Field Practica In An Era Of Mathematics Reform, Damon L. Bahr, Eula Ewing Monroe, Dennis L. Eggett

Faculty Publications

This paper describes a study of observed relationships between the design of a preservice mathematics methods course with accompanying field practicum and changes in the extent to which participating preservice teachers identified themselves with the mathematics reform movement after becoming inservice teachers. The curriculum of the course with its embedded field practicum experiences was designed to support preservice teachers in interweaving methods coursework and pedagogical instruction with classroom practice. University and public school structures were interwoven by conducting weekly mathematics methods course sessions held at a public school site followed immediately by related classroom practicum experiences. The interweaving of conceptualizations …

The Circumference Of The Apostleship, Richard Bennett Jan 2011

The Circumference Of The Apostleship, Richard Bennett

In Robert Bolt's classic drama A Man for All Seasons, the ever-principled and incomparable Thomas More, England's stout defender of the Holy Catholic faith, responded with unflinching conviction when pressed by the Duke of Norfolk about the reasonability and historicity of the Roman Catholic claim to priesthood legitimacy. "The Apostolic Succession of the Pope is--Why, it's a theory yes; you can't see it; can't touch it; it's a theory. But what matters to me is not whether it's true or not but that I believe it to be true, or rather not that I believe it, but that I believe …

Collaborative Argumentation: Toward A More Civil Rhetoric, Craig James Rood Jan 2011

Collaborative Argumentation: Toward A More Civil Rhetoric, Craig James Rood

English

I first describe competitive and cooperative approaches to argumentation, and I claim that cooperative argumentation aligns with the rhetorical tradition yet needs to be developed further. I focus on civil rhetoric as one form of cooperative argumentation. Building off the abstract description of civility offered by Theresa Enos and Kathleen Blake Yancey, I move to the practical level. Blending a quantitative and qualitative approach, I analyze students' writing from an anthology assignment (which pairs collaboration and argumentation) to determine: What kind of civility moves does the anthology assignment foster? In my analysis, I identify six civility moves: (1) common ground, …

Dynamic Light Scattering And Zeta Potential Of Colloidal Mixtures Of Amelogenin And Hydroxyapatite In Calcium And Phosphate Rich Ionic Milieus, Vuk Uskoković, Roselyn Odsinada, Sonia Djordjevic, Stefan Habelitz Jan 2011

Dynamic Light Scattering And Zeta Potential Of Colloidal Mixtures Of Amelogenin And Hydroxyapatite In Calcium And Phosphate Rich Ionic Milieus, Vuk Uskoković, Roselyn Odsinada, Sonia Djordjevic, Stefan Habelitz

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The concept of zeta-potential has been used for more than a century as a basic parameter in controlling the stability of colloidal suspensions, irrespective of the nature of their particulate ingredients – organic or inorganic. There are prospects that self-assembly of peptide species and the protein-mineral interactions related to biomineralization may be controlled using this fundamental physicochemical parameter. In this study, we have analyzed the particle size and zeta-potential of the full-length recombinant human amelogenin (rH174), the main protein of the developing enamel matrix, in the presence of calcium and phosphate ions and hydroxyapatite (HAP) particles. As calcium and phosphate …

Externalizing Communicative Intentions, Charles Lassiter Jan 2011

Externalizing Communicative Intentions, Charles Lassiter

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, I argue that an embodied cognition theorist has resources available to her to fulfill the explanatory role of communicative intention without postulating inner, private intentions, as is typically done by cognitivists. I argue for this conclusion by identifying a publicity requirement and a sensitivity requirement that must be satisfied by realizers of communicative intentions a theoretical posit that explains the difference between linguistic meaning, as in John means cats are mammals by his utterance cats are mammals, and other sorts of meaning, as in that bell means the train doors are closing. I then show that a …

Bounding Surface Approach To The Fatigue Modeling Of Engineering Materials With Applications To Woven Fabric Composites And Concrete, Chao Wen Jan 2011

Bounding Surface Approach To The Fatigue Modeling Of Engineering Materials With Applications To Woven Fabric Composites And Concrete, Chao Wen

Civil and Environmental Engineering

It has been known that the nucleation and growth of cracks and defects dominate the fatigue damage process in brittle or quasi-brittle materials, such as woven fabric composites and concrete. The behaviors of these materials under multiaxial tensile or compression fatigue loading conditions are quite complex, necessitating a unified approach based on principles of mechanics and thermodynamics that offers good predictive capabilities while maintaining simplicity for robust engineering calculations. A unified approach has been proposed in this dissertation to simulate the change of mechanical properties of the woven fabric composite and steel fiber reinforced concrete under uniaxial and biaxial fatigue …

Emerging Political Identification Of Young Adults, Jason Douglas Isaacson Jan 2011

Emerging Political Identification Of Young Adults, Jason Douglas Isaacson

Communication

Research has more than adequately established the importance of the role of parents in the political socialization of young people. However, there is surprisingly little research that examines if and when young people deviate from their parental influence. Once deviation occurs, who replaces parents in the role of influencing the development of the political self? This research examined the development of political identification in young people ages 19-24 to discover if young people deviate from their socialized political attitudes usually instilled by their parents. It also sought to discover what outside influence is having the strongest effect on the subjects …

Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Dairy Manure With Canola Meal, Eric Michieka Atandi Jan 2011

Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Dairy Manure With Canola Meal, Eric Michieka Atandi

Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering

There has been an increase of confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) generating large amounts of manure. When this manure is not handled properly, it generates greenhouse gases (GHGs), odors and water pollution. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is touted as an acceptable approach to address manure management and associated environmental problems. Biogas production from manure alone is limited by low volumes of biogas yield, thus it has a poor economic reputation. Co-digestion of dairy manure with other agricultural wastes has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the economic viability of AD. Among the agricultural wastes, canola meal (a by-product from extraction …

The Coalition Of The Unwilling: Contentious Politics, Political Opportunity Structures, And Challenges For The Contemporary Peace Movement, Victoria Carty Jan 2011

The Coalition Of The Unwilling: Contentious Politics, Political Opportunity Structures, And Challenges For The Contemporary Peace Movement, Victoria Carty

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

The Bush Doctrine, which was installed after the 9-11 attacks on the United States under the guise of the war on terrorism, postulated a vision of the United States as the world’s unchallenged superpower and the invasion of Iraq became one of the central fronts of this war. After failing to get approval by the United Nations for the invasion, the Bush Administration’s attempt to assemble a coalition of the willing became critical to the battle for public opinion to back the war. While the administration was able to garner some support, the coalition eventually unravelled and all troops are …

Events Machine, Robert Arlt

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores the relation between narrative and (im)material: investigating traditional means of making architectural media while testing and generating representation with film (narrative) in the pursuit of a haptic, architectural 'facilitator.' The investigation will be a hybrid typology of a wayside rest area with accommodations for tourists and travelers and also a water research facility for ecological research, training and global awareness. The architecture conceives experiences of space-time through a series of choreographed moments that reflect the context, a deep glacial history embedded in the horizon. What we do depends on who we are; but it is necessary to …

Digital Technology And The Variation In Design Routines: A Sequence Analysis Of Four Design Processes, James Gaskin, B. Veeresh Thummadi, Kalle Lyytinen, Youngjin Yoo

Faculty Publications

We advance a theory of design process variation across organizational types and the effects of digitalization on these processes. We argue that design routines are subject to greater variation within and between organizations as organizations embed increasingly rich repertoires of digital capabilities in their design activities. Using a sequence analysis method we compare design process variation in four organizations to examine how design routines vary due to differences in embedded digital capabilities and organization of the design process. Our analysis reveals new insights on the effects organizational context and digitalization have on design routine composition.

A Web Of Knowledge: A Conceptual-Modeling Perspective, David W. Embley, Stephen W. Liddle, Cui Tao

Faculty Publications

The current web is a web of linked pages. Frustrated users search for facts by guessing which keywords or keyword phrases might lead them to pages where they can find facts. Can we make it possible for users to search directly for facts? Equivalently, can we turn the web into a web of facts (instead of a web of pages containing facts)? Ultimately, can the web be a knowledgebase—a web of knowledge—that can provide direct answers to factual questions and also provide the confidence necessary to make those answers believable? We answer these questions by showing how to superimpose a …

Conceptual Modeling Foundations For A Web Of Knowledge, David W. Embley, Stephen W. Liddle, Deryle W. Lonsdale

Faculty Publications

The semantic web purports to be a web of knowledge that can answer our questions, help us reason about everyday problems as well as scientific endeavors, and service many of our wants and needs. Researchers and others expound various views about exactly what this means. Here we propose an answer with conceptual modeling as its foundation. We define a web of knowledge as a collection of interconnected knowledge bundles superimposed over a web of documents. Knowledge bundles are conceptual model instances augmented with facilities that provide for both extensional and intensional facts, for linking between knowledge bundles yielding a web …

A New Printed Quasi-Landstorfor Antenna, Masud Al Aziz Jan 2011

A New Printed Quasi-Landstorfor Antenna, Masud Al Aziz

Electrical and Computer Engineering

In this thesis, a new type of printed quasi-Landstorfer antenna is present ed. The proposed antenna utilizes parasitic radiators to realize a higher gain. The antc1ma is measured to have a resonant frequency of 2.45 GHz with a return loss of -43 cll3. The gain of the antenna is measured to be 7.2 dBi and can be increased to 8 dBi with the design of a folded slot. The gain increment is achieved without increasing the overall dimension of the antenna. Both the measured and the stimulated radiation patterns indicate that the antenna has a symmetric radiation pattern in the …

An Upper Limit For Macromolecular Crowding Effects, Andrew C. Miklos, Congang Li, Courtney D. Sorell, L. Andrew Lyon, Gary J. Pielak

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Solutions containing high macromolecule concentrations are predicted to affect a number of protein properties compared to those properties in dilute solution. In cells, these macromolecular crowders have a large range of sizes and can occupy 30% or more of the available volume. We chose to study the stability and ps-ns internal dynamics of a globular protein whose radius is similar to 2 nm when crowded by a synthetic microgel composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) with particle radii of similar to 300 nm.

Results: Our studies revealed no change in protein rotational or ps-ns backbone dynamics and only mild …

Quantifying Agonist Activity At G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Frederick J. Ehlert, Hinako Suga, Michael T. Griffin

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

When an agonist activates a population of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), it elicits a signaling pathway that culminates in the response of the cell or tissue. This process can be analyzed at the level of a single receptor, a population of receptors, or a downstream response. Here we describe how to analyze the downstream response to obtain an estimate of the agonist affinity constant for the active state of single receptors.

Receptors behave as quantal switches that alternate between active and inactive states (Figure 1). The active state interacts with specific G proteins or other signaling partners. In the absence …

Making And Unmaking Of Transnational Environmental Cooperation, Yooil Bae, Dong-Ae Shin, Yong-Wook Lee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

There has been an ongoing debate about how (or through what mechanisms) global environmental norms have influenced domestic political debates that give rise to green policy choices. In particular, effective international environmental cooperation between transnational and domestic NGOs has been recognized as a key to successful environmental movements. In this regard, the central question guiding research on the politics of environmental norms is, under what condition(s) transnational cooperation among NGOs would be more likely to be sustained so as to achieve its goals. This article proposes that one of the mechanisms missing from the debate is a bottom-up approach through …

Negotiating Federalism, Erin Ryan Jan 2011

Negotiating Federalism, Erin Ryan

Faculty Publications

Bridging the fields of federalism and negotiation theory, Negotiating Federalism analyzes how public actors navigate difficult federalism terrain by negotiating directly with counterparts across state-federal lines. In contrast to the stylized, zero-sum model of federalism that pervades political discourse and judicial doctrine, the Article demonstrates that the boundary between state and federal power is negotiated on scales large and small, and on an ongoing basis. It is also the first to recognize the procedural tools that bilateral federalism bargaining offers to supplement unilateral federalism interpretation in contexts of jurisdictional overlap.

The Article begins by situating its inquiry within the age-old …

Resolving Conflicts By A Random Device, Erik O. Kimbrough, Roman M. Sheremeta, Timothy W. Shields Jan 2011

Resolving Conflicts By A Random Device, Erik O. Kimbrough, Roman M. Sheremeta, Timothy W. Shields

ESI Working Papers

We examine conflict resolution via a random device. We model conflict as a two-agent rent-seeking contest for a fixed prize. Before conflict arises, both agents may agree to allocate the prize by coin flip to avoid the costs of conflict. In equilibrium, risk-neutral agents with relatively symmetric conflict capabilities agree to resolve the conflict by randomization. However, with sufficiently asymmetric capabilities, conflicts are unavoidable because the stronger agent prefers to fight. Laboratory experiments confirm that the availability of the random device partially eliminates conflicts when agents are relatively symmetric; however, the device also reduces conflict between substantially asymmetric agents.

Real Effort, Real Leisure And Real-Time Supervision: Incentives And Peer Pressure In Virtual Organizations, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hérnan-Gonzalez, Stephen J. Rassenti

ESI Working Papers

We propose a novel approach to the analysis of organizations by developing a computerized platform that reproduces relevant features of existing organizations such as real-effort tasks and real-leisure alternative activities (Internet). In this environment, we find strong incentives effects as organizations using individual incentives significantly outperform those relying on team incentives. Combining real-time peer monitoring with team incentives, we report striking evidence of positive peer effects as production increases by 50% and Internet usage decreases by 54% compared with organizations using team incentives alone. Peer monitoring allows virtual organizations using team incentives to perform as well as those using individual …

Don’T Ask Me If You Will Not Listen: The Dilemma Of Participative Decision Making, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hérnan-Gonzalez Jan 2011

Don’T Ask Me If You Will Not Listen: The Dilemma Of Participative Decision Making, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hérnan-Gonzalez

ESI Working Papers

We study the effect of participative decision making in an experimental principalagent game, where the principal can consult the agent’s preferred option regarding the task to be undertaken in the final stage of the game. We show that consulting the agent was beneficial to principals as long as they followed the agent’s choice. Ignoring the agent’s choice was detrimental to the principal as it engendered negative emotions and low levels of transfers. Nevertheless, the majority of principals were reluctant to change their mind and adopt the agent’s proposal. Our results suggest that the ability to change one’s own mind is …

The Effect Of Reliability, Content And Timing Of Public Announcements On Asset Trading Behavior, Brice Corgnet, Praveen Kujal, David Porter Jan 2011

The Effect Of Reliability, Content And Timing Of Public Announcements On Asset Trading Behavior, Brice Corgnet, Praveen Kujal, David Porter

ESI Working Papers

Financial markets are overwhelmed by daily announcements. We use experimental asset markets to assess the impact of releasing public messages with different levels of reliability on asset prices. Subjects receive qualitative announcements in predetermined trading periods that are either preset by the experimenter, randomly selected, or determined by past asset market prices. We find that messages can play a significant role in bubble abatement, or rekindling. The preset message, “The price is too high,” decreases the amplitude and duration of bubbles for inexperienced subjects. Announcements that depend on the actual level of mispricing reduce bubble magnitude. Meanwhile, a preset or …
