Climate-Related Hydrological Regimes And Their Effects On Abundance Of Juvenile Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) In The Northcentral Gulf Of Mexico, Guillermo Sanchez-Rubio, Harriet M. Perry, Patricia M. Biesiot, Donald R. Johnson, Romuald N. Lipcius

Faculty Publications

The abundance of juvenile blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) in the northcentral Gulf of Mexico was investigated in response to climate-related hydrological regimes. Two distinct periods of blue crab abundance (1, 1973-94 and 2, 1997-2005) were associated with two opposite climate-related hydrological regimes. Period 1 was characterized by high numbers of crabs, whereas period 2 was characterized by low numbers of crabs. The cold phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and high north-south wind momentum were associated with period 1. Hydrological conditions associated with phases of the AMO and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in conjunction with the north-south …

Habitat Selection By Critically Endangered Florida Panthers Across The Diel Period: Implications For Land Management And Conservation, Dave P. Onorato, Marc Criffield, Mark Lotz, Mark Cunningham, Roy Mcbride, Erin H. Leone, Oron L. Bass Jr., Eric C. Hellgren Apr 2011

Habitat Selection By Critically Endangered Florida Panthers Across The Diel Period: Implications For Land Management And Conservation, Dave P. Onorato, Marc Criffield, Mark Lotz, Mark Cunningham, Roy Mcbride, Erin H. Leone, Oron L. Bass Jr., Eric C. Hellgren

Publications

Decisions regarding landscape management, restoration, and land acquisition typically depend on land managers’ interpretation of how wildlife selects habitat. Such assessments are particularly important for umbrella species like the endangered Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi), whose survival requires vast wildlands. Some interpretations of habitat selection by panthers have been criticized for using only morning locations in defining habitat use. We assessed habitat selection using a Euclidean distance analysis (EDA) and location data collected throughout the diel period from GPS collars deployed on 20 independent Florida panthers. We corroborated aspects of earlier analyses by demonstrating selection of forested habitats …

Is Sexual Monomorphism A Predictor Of Polygynandry? Evidence From A Social Mammal, The Collared Peccary, Jennifer Daniel Cooper, Peter M. Waser, Eric C. Hellgren, Timothy M. Gabor, J. A. Dewoody Apr 2011

Is Sexual Monomorphism A Predictor Of Polygynandry? Evidence From A Social Mammal, The Collared Peccary, Jennifer Daniel Cooper, Peter M. Waser, Eric C. Hellgren, Timothy M. Gabor, J. A. Dewoody

Publications

Sexual dimorphism is common in polygynous species, and there is clear evidence that both intra-sexual competition and female preferences can drive the evolution of large body size in males. In contrast, sexual monomorphism is often argued to reflect a relaxation of male mate competition or an intensification of resource competition among females. Alternatively, it might imply opportunities for females to circumvent or counteract male mate competition in a polygynandrous mating system. We test the prediction that sexual monorphism is associated with polygynandry in the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu, Tayassuidae), a social ungulate closely related to the old-world suids. …

Hemocompatibility Of Silicon-Based Substrates For Biomedical Implant Applications, Lingyan Liu Apr 2011

Hemocompatibility Of Silicon-Based Substrates For Biomedical Implant Applications, Lingyan Liu

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Silicon membranes with highly uniform nanopore sizes fabricated using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology allow for the development of miniaturized implants such as those needed for renal replacement therapies. However, the blood compatibility of silicon has thus far been an unresolved issue in the use of these substrates in implantable biomedical devices. We report the results of hemocompatibility studies using bare silicon, polysilicon, and modified silicon substrates. The surface modifications tested have been shown to reduce protein and/or platelet adhesion, thus potentially improving biocompatibility of silicon. Hemocompatibility was evaluated under four categories—coagulation (thrombin–antithrombin complex, TAT generation), complement activation (complement protein, C3a …

Excessive production of reactive oxygen species can lead to alteration of cellular functions responsible for many diseases including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and aging. Hydroxyl radical is a short-lived radical which is considered very aggressive due to its high reactivity toward biological molecules. In this study, a COumarin-NEutral Red (CONER) nanoprobe was developed for detection of hydroxyl radical based on the ratiometric fluorescence signal between 7-hydroxy coumarin 3-carboxylic acid and neutral red dyes. Biocompatible poly lactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) nanoparticles containing encapsulated neutral red were produced using a coumarin 3-carboxylic acid conjugated poly(sodium N-undecylenyl-Nε-lysinate) (C3C-poly-Nε- SUK) as moiety reactive to hydroxyl …

Exposure to airborne particles is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. During the combustion of chlorine-containing hazardous materials and fuels, chlorinated hydrocarbons chemisorb to the surface of transition metal-oxide-containing particles, reduce the metal, and form an organic free radical. These radical-particle systems can survive in the environment for days and are called environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs). This study determined whether EPFRs could decrease left ventricular function before and after ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) in vivo. Male Brown-Norway rats were dosed (8mg/kg, intratracheal) 24h prior to testing with particles containing the EPFR of 1, 2-dichlorobenzene (DCB230). DCB230 treatment decreased …

Visual Cues Are Relevant In Behavioral Control Measures For Cosmopolites Sordidus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Gadi V.P. Reddy, A. Raman

Faculty Publications

Trap designs for banana root borer, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), have been done essentially on the understanding that C. sordidus rely primarily on chemical cues. Our present results indicate that these borers also rely on visual cues. Previous studies have demonstrated that among the eight differently colored traps tested in the field, brown traps were the most effective compared with the performances of yellow, red, gray, blue, black, white, and green traps; mahogany-brown was more effective than other shades of brown. In the current study, efficiency of ground traps with different colors was evaluated in the laboratory for the …

The Role Of Symmetry In The Regulation Of Bacterial Carboxyltransferase, Grover L. Waldrop Apr 2011

The Role Of Symmetry In The Regulation Of Bacterial Carboxyltransferase, Grover L. Waldrop

Faculty Publications

Carboxyltransferase is one component of the multifunctional enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase which catalyzes the first committed step in fatty acid biosynthesis. Carboxyltransferase is an α2β2 heterotetramer and possesses two distinct but integrated functions. One function catalyzes the transfer of carbon dioxide from biotin to acetyl-CoA, whereas the other involves binding to the mRNA encoding both subunits. When carboxyltransferase binds to the mRNA both enzymatic activity and translation of the mRNA are inhibited. However, the substrate acetyl-CoA competes with mRNA for binding. Thus, mRNA binding by carboxyltransferase provides an effective mechanism for regulating enzymatic activity and gene expression. This conceptual review takes …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) - associated smooth muscle tumors (EBV-SMT) are a rare, recently recognized distinct group of mesenchymal tumors that develop exclusively in patients with immunosuppression. It is believed that tumorigenesis is, at least in part, through the activation of the Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signal pathway. We describe the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of a multifocal hepatic EBV-SMT in a 34-year-old acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient and investigate the activation status of the mTOR signal pathway in this tumor. In addition, we provide a review of the literature on the clinicopathologic findings of hepatic EBV-SMT in adult AIDS …

Polygonal Spatial Clustering, Deepti Joshi Apr 2011

Polygonal Spatial Clustering, Deepti Joshi

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Clustering, the process of grouping together similar objects, is a fundamental task in data mining to help perform knowledge discovery in large datasets.  With the growing number of sensor networks, geospatial satellites, global positioning devices, and human networks tremendous amounts of spatio-temporal data that measure the state of the planet Earth are being collected every day.  This large amount of spatio-temporal data has increased the need for efficient spatial data mining techniques.  Furthermore, most of the anthropogenic objects in space are represented using polygons, for example – counties, census tracts, and watersheds.  Therefore, it is important to develop data mining …
