Effect Of Rice-Bran Water Extract On Energy Metabolism In Rats Fed A High-Fat Diet, Chotip Charkhonpunya, Seewaboon Sireeratawong, Surat Komindr, Nusiri Lerdvuthisopon
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Insulin resistance and some chronic un-communicable diseases have long been known to associate with obesity. The altered energy metabolism is verified, in part, by observing fat accumulation in fat tissues and liver as well as analyzing the acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) in liver, lipid profile in blood and oral glucose tolerance. The study was carried out in 7 groups of Sprague Dawley rats. Rats in group 2-7 were fed with high-fat diet (HF) while group 1 is the control group where rats were fed with standard chow. RBE at doses of 220.5, 2205 and 4410 mg/kg rat weight and metformin …
The Miracle Of Rna Interference In The Modern Medical Research, Rungrat Jitvaropas, Sunchai Payungporn
The Miracle Of Rna Interference In The Modern Medical Research, Rungrat Jitvaropas, Sunchai Payungporn
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
RNA interference (RNAi) serves as a powerful tool in regulating specific genes. There are two pathways of RNAi that are triggered by endogenous microRNA (pri-miRNA) or exogenous double-strand RNA (dsRNA). In the initiation step, pri-miRNA or dsRNA is cleaved into miRNA and small interfering RNA duplex (siRNA), respectively. Subsequently the mi/siRNA is incorporated into the RNA induced silencing complex (RISC) and leading the RISC to complementary RNA molecules. RNAi results in not only the knockdown of gene expression but also degradation of the target gene. To date, RNAi technology is indispensable in modern medical research. The goal of RNAi research …
Anti-Malarial Activity Exhibited By Florida Mangrove Endophytes, Jacqueline Lee Salm
Anti-Malarial Activity Exhibited By Florida Mangrove Endophytes, Jacqueline Lee Salm
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
Many organisms around the world including plants, marine organisms, and microbes release chemicals used for things such as pigment or defense against other organisms. These chemicals are known as secondary metabolites and have been found to exhibit promising activity against many infectious diseases and cancer. Natural products chemistry is the study of these secondary metabolites with one of the purposes to discover new small organic molecules for potential pharmaceutical use in the future. With parasitic diseases, such as malaria, prominent throughout the poorest regions of the world, there are great opportunities for discovering anti-malarial drugs from natural products. Approximately 250 …

Fish Oil Decreases Inflammation And Reduces Cardiac Remodeling In Rosiglitazone Treated Aging Mice, Ganesh V. Halade, Paul J. Williams, Merry L. Lindsey, Gabriel Fernandes
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Clinical studies suggest that rosiglitazone (RSG) treatment may increase the incidence of heart failure in diabetic patients. In this study, we examined whether a high corn oil diet with RSG treatment in insulin resistant aging mice exerted metabolic and pro-inflammatory effects that stimulate cardiac dysfunction. We also evaluated whether fish oil attenuated these effects. Female C57BL/6J mice (13 months old) were divided into 5 groups: (1) lean control (LC), (2) corn oil, (3) fish oil, (4) corn oil + RSG and (5) fish oil + RSG. Mice fed a corn oil enriched diet and RSG developed hypertrophy of the left …
Nitric Oxide Synthesis By Chicken Macrophages Results In Coordinated Changes Of Multiple Arginine Transporters, Michael Moulds
Nitric Oxide Synthesis By Chicken Macrophages Results In Coordinated Changes Of Multiple Arginine Transporters, Michael Moulds
Master's Theses
Arginine transport is primarily mediated by the cationic amino acid transporters (CATs) in mammalian cells, but in aves the y+, b0,+ and B0,+ transport systems have also been observed. Arginine is the limiting catabolic substrate required for the production of nitric oxide (NO), a highly reactive compound that acts as a signaling molecule or killing compound. NO is synthesized by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) by macrophages for pathogen clearance. In mammals, CAT-2B is responsible for ARG import in the macrophage for NO synthesis, but the chicken CAT-2B isoform does not transport ARG. Therefore the objective …

Think of built capital as the foundation of a com¬munity. In some ways, built capital is the delivery system, the infrastructure of how other capitals can be used. Facilities, roads, power plants, and technol¬ogy are physical infrastructures that can be used to strengthen local development. Some examples of built capital: • sewer and water systems • buildings • machinery • roads • electronic communications
Making The "Growing" Trend A Reality: Proof That The Organic Lifestyle Is Worth The Money And Is In The Reach Of Even A College Student's Budget, Mary E. Allen
Honors Theses – Charlotte Campus
Although organic foods may be the answer to solving a number of environmental, societal, and nutritional issues that are prevalent in our world today, many people do not understand what the term “organic” means and its implications for our future as an intelligent species. Recent surveys show that up to thirty-five percent of consumers would not purchase organic foods even if they were the same price and as readily available as their conventional counterparts (Duram 99).This statistic proves that people do not understand what it means for food to be organic and do not know the major negative impact that …

Zfp42/Rex1 (reduced expression gene 1) is a well-known stem-cell marker that has been duplicated from YY1 in the eutherian lineage. In the current study, we characterized the in vivo roles of Rex1 using a mutant mouse line disrupting its transcription. In contrast to the ubiquitous expression of YY1, Rex1 is expressed only during spermatogenesis and early embryogenesis and also in a very limited area of the placenta. Yet, the gene dosage of Rex1 is very critical for the survival of the late-stage embryos and neonates. This delayed phenotypic consequence suggests potential roles for Rex1 in establishing and maintaining unknown epigenetic …

Tripodfish (Aulopiformes: Bathypterois) Locomotion And Landing Behaviour From Video Observation At Bathypelagic Depths In The Campos Basin Of Brazil, Matthew P. Davis, Prosanta Chakrabarty
Faculty Publications
A video observation of a deep-sea tripodfish (Aulopiformes: Bathypterois) taken from a remotely-operated vehicle at a depth of 1443 m in the Campos Basin, Brazil is analysed for swimming and landing movements. The observed specimen is identified here as Bathypteroisgrallator, and this record is the first video observation of a tripodfish exhibiting periodic swimming followed by landing in a resting position on deep-sea substrate which we interpret as ‘bathypteroiform’ movement, a locomotive mode unique to taxa within Bathypterois. This observation describes the functional role of the fins associated with landing, including independent movements of the elongated fin ray elements. The …

Structure/Function Assessment Of Synapses At Motor Nerve Terminals, Andrew Fredericks Moser Johnstone, Kert Viele, Robin L. Cooper
Biology Faculty Publications
The release of transmitter at neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) of the opener muscle in crayfish is quantal in nature. This NMJ offers the advantage of being able to record quantal events at specific visually identified release sites, thus allowing measurement of the physiological parameters of vesicle release and its response to be directly correlated with synaptic structure.
These experiments take advantage of areas between the varicosities on the nerve terminal that we define as "stems." Stems were chosen as the region to study because of their low synaptic output due to fewer synaptic sites. Through 3D reconstruction from hundreds of serial …

Faculty Of 1000 And Vivo: Invisible Colleges And Team Science, John Carey
Publications and Research
Within the traditional model of scholarly communications, "invisible colleges" facilitate a process of social diffusion that fuels the growth of scientific specialties. This diffusion of ideas operates not through published journal articles but rather through informal communications between researchers. In recent years, researchers have availed themselves of collaborative Web 2.0 forums such as blogs, wikis, and social networking sites to meet their need for increasingly sophisticated vehicles of informal communication. Examinations of the database Faculty of 1000 and the semantic web application VIVO help to illustrate how invisible colleges have migrated to a networked environment where they can play an …
A Comparison Of Antibiotic Resistant Escherichia Coli To The Wild Type Strain, Matthew Thomas Schreiner
A Comparison Of Antibiotic Resistant Escherichia Coli To The Wild Type Strain, Matthew Thomas Schreiner
Senior Honors Theses
Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem that has rendered many antibiotics ineffective. Bacteria can gain resistance through spontaneous mutations and horizontal gene transfer. A better understanding of the overarching effects of antibiotic resistance on resistant strains is necessary when considering possible solutions to this issue. Tetracycline and doxycycline resistant strains of E. coli were compared to a wild type K-12 strain to determine if resistance engenders any fitness costs. The different strains were compared using antibiotic sensitivity tests, growth rate analysis and metabolic tests. The resistant strains actually grew at a slightly faster rate than the wild type strain. However, …

An Exploratory Study Of Predictors Of Academic Success In A Graduate Nursing Program, Lori B. Brown
Masters Theses
Identifying qualified students who are most likely to be successful in their graduate nursing studies is the goal of the admission process. Because fiscal and human resources are often limited, it is important that universities admit students who have the academic capabilities necessary to complete the degree requirements. This study attempted to determine whether the established admission criteria for graduate nursing students at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) reliably predict success within the graduate nursing program and if so, whether any one criterion is a better predictor of success. For the purpose of this study, success was defined as completion …

The focus of this research is to analyze potential environmental impact in the supply chain of palm oil biodiesel industries. Simple Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is applied to analyze impacts, produced by the three main units in the supply chain of Palm-Oil-based Biodiesel, which are Palm Plantation, CPO mill, and Biodiesel Plant. We developed LCA calculation model using spreadsheet software, used to assess a number of input scenarios to evaluate the best scenario, in variation of: land quality, land area and the rate of clearing, land clearing technique and type of the original land. The biggest potential environmental impact is …
Shades Of Whiteness: Petits-Blancs And The Politics Of Military Allocations Distribution In World War I Colonial Cochinchina, Christina Firpo
Shades Of Whiteness: Petits-Blancs And The Politics Of Military Allocations Distribution In World War I Colonial Cochinchina, Christina Firpo
History
During World War I male French citizens in Cochinchina whom the colonial government had drafted to fight in Europe left their families behind in the colony. Through a complicated subsidies process, the government offered financial assistance to families impoverished by the draftee’s departure and the concomitant loss of income. Far from being a monolithic category, the colony’s poor white applicants, also known as petits-blancs, received varying government subsidies, depending on their family configurations. This article argues that the military allocations council’s judgments correlate with the petits-blancs applicants’ relationships to indigenous people and their adherence to traditional gender roles. To guard …

Activation Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase As An Early Indicator For Stress In The Lobster, Homarus Americanus, Stephanie Podolski
Activation Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase As An Early Indicator For Stress In The Lobster, Homarus Americanus, Stephanie Podolski
All Theses And Dissertations
Variations in water temperature, salinity, pH, and oxygen concentration are stressors that marine invertebrates face on a daily basis. Each of these physiological stressors creates a large cellular demand for energy. In mammals, energy metabolism is regulated by the enzyme AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which is highly conserved during evolution. This project was designed to test the hypothesis that AMPK is present and activated by temperature, hypoxia, and anoxia stress in the lobster, Homarus americanus.
Animals were exposed to a rapid and progressive increase in temperature (6ºC per hour) beginning at 14 ºC. We measured lactate concentrations and AMPK …
