Cordage, Textiles, And The Late Pleistocene Peopling Of The Andes, Edward A. Jolie, Thomas F. Lynch, Phil R. Geib, J. M. Adovasio Apr 2011

Cordage, Textiles, And The Late Pleistocene Peopling Of The Andes, Edward A. Jolie, Thomas F. Lynch, Phil R. Geib, J. M. Adovasio

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Harsh high-altitude environments were among the last landscapes to be settled by humans during the Late Pleistocene between ∼15,000 and 11,000 calendar years before present (cal yr BP). Successful colonization required physiological adaptations to hypoxia and cultural adaptations to limited resources and cold temperatures. How and when humans colonized Andean South America has been poorly understood owing to controversial early archaeological sites and questions about the impact of environmental factors, including the presence of glaciers. Here we report the reexamination and direct dating of six finely woven textiles and cords from Guitarrero Cave, Peru, that identify South America’s earliest textiles …

Racial Identity Development And Psychological Adjustment In Biracial Individuals Of Minority/Minority Racial Group Descent, Kizzie Paule Walker Apr 2011

Racial Identity Development And Psychological Adjustment In Biracial Individuals Of Minority/Minority Racial Group Descent, Kizzie Paule Walker

Dissertations (1934 -)

Based on the theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism and race as a social construct, individuals with biological parents racially distinct from each other have biracial identity options (i.e., Singular, Border, Protean, and Transcendent) (e.g., Rockquemore and Brunsma, 2002). The purpose of the current study was to examine factors that influenced biracial individuals' level of racial/ethnic identity development and the impact on biracial identity and psychological adjustment (i.e., self-esteem and psychological well-being). A total of 199 biracial individuals, who ranged in age from 18 to 55 years, completed an online survey that measured factors such as the rule of hypodescent (i.e., …

Manipulating Cellular Growth Responses To Patterning, Apoptotic, And Environmental Cues, James N. Mcnamara Apr 2011

Manipulating Cellular Growth Responses To Patterning, Apoptotic, And Environmental Cues, James N. Mcnamara

Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, various methods of controlling cell growth are examined. Cell-cell interaction, apoptotic cues, three dimensional scaffolds, and non-adherent environments are evaluated for their ability to affect the differentiation, morphology, and growth rate of different cell types. Previous work has shown that cell growth and cell morphology can be influenced by patterns of polymers coated on surfaces in two dimensions, designated here as the x and y dimensions of a standard Cartesian coordinate system. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine studies have shown limited success in modifying growth in the third, z dimension. This work considers not only the x, …

The Clinical Application Of Progressive Filtering In Normal And Disordered Populations, Sarah M. Johnson Apr 2011

The Clinical Application Of Progressive Filtering In Normal And Disordered Populations, Sarah M. Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations

The present study examined the effect of progressive filter testing in children with normal auditory processing skills and children with (central) auditory processing disorders [(C)APD]. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if a new screening procedure designed by the investigator called Progressive Filtering would differentiate between a control group (i.e. children with normal auditory processing skills) and an experimental group [children with (C)APD]. Twenty subjects (age 6 to 14 years) participated in the study. All subjects received an audiological examination, an auditory processing test battery, and the Progressive Filtering screening tool. Results indicated that the investigator-designed Progressive …

Development Of Approximating Functions To Model And Predict The Properties Of Fresh And Hardened Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Eleazar Ivan Diaz Loya Apr 2011

Development Of Approximating Functions To Model And Predict The Properties Of Fresh And Hardened Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Eleazar Ivan Diaz Loya

Doctoral Dissertations

The manuscript presented herein is based on the investigation of the mechanical properties of fly ash-based geopolymer concrete and their link to fly ash (FA) characteristics. A database of 32 FA samples was created. Each FA sample was analyzed in terms of chemical composition, crystallographic properties and particle size distribution. The mechanical performance of geopolymer concrete (GPC) made from each FA sample was evaluated in terms of density, setting time, compressive and flexural strength, static elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio. It is worth mentioning that the author has already published preliminary results of this study (Diaz and Allouche, 2010; Diaz …

After The Fire Is Out, Elise Lequire Apr 2011

After The Fire Is Out, Elise Lequire

Joint Fire Science Program Digests

Even before firefighters have left a burn site, a second wave of specialists is deployed. Their task: to assess the burn site; determine the level of risk to life, property, and ecological resources; and determine quickly the most effective postfire treatments for emergency stabilization and initial rehabilitation of the site. For the past 13 years, the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) has funded research on this critical phase of work, which often goes unnoticed after the fire is out. With support from the JFSP, scientists have made great strides in improving the tools available to assess postfire risks and evaluate …
