Academic Journal Publishing In Nigeria: Issues, Challenges And Prospects, A.O. Amusan, Dele Olanisimi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Compared to the situation up to the late 1970s, academic publishing in Africa and its concomitant effect of scholarly research has declined in terms of output, quality and regularity of a publications (Olukoju, 2002). This reflects the general decline in the standards and funding of education, a consequence of prolonged military rule characterized by lack of accountability and thinly veiled culture of obscurantism (Olukoju, 2002). He also stressed the problem of collapsed currency, owing to plunder, and mismanagement by the country’s military rulers and their civilian collaborations.

Seep Ridge Road Paving Project Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management Apr 2011

Seep Ridge Road Paving Project Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (UT)

This Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared to disclose and analyze the environmental consequences of the Seep Ridge Road Paving Project as proposed by Uintah County (hereafter referred to as the county). The EA is a site-specific analysis of potential impacts that could result with the implementation of the Proposed Action or an alternative to the Proposed Action. The EA assists the BLM in project planning and in making a determination as to whether any “significant” impacts could result from the analyzed actions. An EA also provides evidence for determining whether a statement of “Finding of No Significant Impact” (FONSI) …

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a neoplastic disease originally identified only on green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). The disease is likely to be terminal if tumors are developed internally, but external tumors on the eyes, mouth, and flippers can also lead to fatal impairment of vision and difficulty feeding and swimming. The involvement of an environmental cofactor appears possible since many FP outbreaks occur at sites of poor water quality in Florida, Hawaii, Brazil, and other similar places around the world, but outbreaks have also been recorded at less contaminated sites. Studies have shown an association between FP and the fibropapilloma-associated turtle …

The Effect Of Air Temperature On The Incubation Period And Hatching Success Of In Situ Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) Clutches In Broward County, Florida, Lucy Teal Kawana, Curtis M. Burney, Louis Fisher

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The survival rates of pre-emergent sea turtle hatchlings are critically dependent upon temperature. This study aims to determine if changes in air temperature have influenced the incubation time and/or the survivorship of the pre-emergent loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) hatchlings for past sea turtle nesting seasons in Broward County. Air temperature data within the hatching seasons of 1999 to 2009 was obtained from the NOAA National Climatic Data Center’s Fort Lauderdale beach station. The loggerhead sea turtle hatching data collected by the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program from the same time period was examined to assess the …

Functional Analysis Of Borrelia Burgdorferi Uvra In Dna Damage Protection, Mariya Sambir, Larisa Ivanova, Anton V. Bryksin, Henry P. Godfrey, Felipe C. Cabello

NYMC Faculty Publications

Bacterial pathogens face constant challenges from DNA-damaging agents generated by host phagocytes. Although Borrelia burgdorferi appears to have much fewer DNA repair enzymes than pathogens with larger genomes, it does contain homologues of uvrA and uvrB (subunits A and B of excinuclease ABC). As a first step to exploring the physiologic function of uvrA(Bbu) and its possible role in survival in the host in the face of DNA-damaging agents, a partially deleted uvrA mutant was isolated by targeted inactivation. While growth of this mutant was markedly inhibited by UV irradiation, mitomycin C (MMC) and hydrogen peroxide at doses that lacked …

The Oval

We all come from different places, be they physical, mental, or emotional. College is, for many, the place where all these different viewpoints connect. While some have criscrossed the country, trying to settle down, others have stayed close to home, hunting on the Missouri Breaks or getting to know the locals. The 2011 issue of the Oval contains stories, poems, and art expressing this variety of places.

Torque Around The Center Of Mass: Dynamic Stability During Quadrupedal Arboreal Locomotion In The Siberian Chipmunk (Tamias Sibiricus), Andrew R. Lammers, Ulrich Zurcher

Physics Faculty Publications

When animals travel on tree branches, avoiding falls is of paramount importance. Animals swiftly running on a narrow branch must rely on movement to create stability rather than on static methods. We examined how Siberian chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus) remain stable while running on a narrow tree branch trackway. We examined the pitch, yaw, and rolling torques around the center of mass, and hypothesized that within a stride, any angular impulse (torque during step time) acting on the center of mass would be canceled out by an equal and opposite angular impulse. Three chipmunks were videotaped while running on a 2 …

Wildlife Scientists And Wilderness Managers Finding Common Ground With Noninvasive And Nonintrusive Sampling Of Wildlife, Michael K. Schwartz, Peter B. Landres, David J. Parsons Apr 2011

Wildlife Scientists And Wilderness Managers Finding Common Ground With Noninvasive And Nonintrusive Sampling Of Wildlife, Michael K. Schwartz, Peter B. Landres, David J. Parsons

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Iconic wildlife species such as grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, and wolverines are often associated with wilderness. Wilderness may provide some of the last, and best, remaining places for such species because wilderness can offer long-term legislated protection, relatively large areas, and remoteness (Mattson 1997). Indeed, the word wilderness in its original form literally means “place of wild beasts” (Nash 1982). Despite this natural fit between wilderness and wildlife, simply drawing a boundary around an area such as wilderness does not assure the protection and persistence of wildlife either inside the area or across the broader landscape (Landres et al. 1998). …

A Unique Coxiella Burnetii Lipoprotein Involved In Metal Binding (Limb), James M. Battisti, Linda D. Hicks, Michael F. Minnick Apr 2011

A Unique Coxiella Burnetii Lipoprotein Involved In Metal Binding (Limb), James M. Battisti, Linda D. Hicks, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Coxiella burnetii is the bacterial agent of Q fever in humans. Here, we describe a unique, ~7.2 kDa, surface-exposed lipoprotein involved in metal binding which we have termed LimB. LimB was initially identified as a potential metal-binding protein on far-Western (FW) blots containing whole-cell lysate proteins when probed with nickel-coated horseradish peroxidase (Ni-HRP) and developed with a chemiluminescent HRP substrate. The corresponding identity of LimB as CBU1224a was established by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometry. blast analyses with CBU1224a showed no significant similarity to sequences outside strains of C. burnetii. Additional in silico analyses revealed a putative 20 …
