The Vascular Flora Of The Tennessee River Gorge, Hamilton And Marion Counties, Tennessee, Emily R. Blyveis

An inventory of the vascular flora of the Tennessee River Gorge (TRG) was conducted between April 2009 and July 2011. The TRG is a 41-km-long river canyon located on the Cumberland Plateau physiographic province within Hamilton and Marion Counties, Tennessee. According to previous ecological surveys, the 4,970 ha (12,281 acres) study area contains 12 natural communities and six unique habitats. A total of 960 specimens were collected. These comprised 692 species and lesser taxa, representing 392 genera from 123 families of vascular plants. Overall, 133 county range extensions were documented for Hamilton and Marion Counties. This study examined the possible relationship between student age and student gender on academic achievement on a state mandated assessment for a cohort of North Georgia elementary school students in their first, second, and third grade years. Study results indicated that student age had a statistically significant impact on academic achievement for students in their first and third grade years on the mathematics portion of the assessment. Older students within the cohort scored at higher academic levels of achievement on the mathematics assessment than did younger students. Student age did not have an impact on scores for the reading portion …

The canopy cover of the Pinus contorta forests of west-central Alberta, dictates colonization of the forest floor ground layer. This dynamic ground layer is a mosaic of feather mosses and reindeer lichens in a system driven by disturbance. In this project, anthropogenic was used to control canopy cover change and study its effects on the ground layer. Timber companies selectively mechanically thinned sections producing three experimental areas with uncut controls. Data were collected from 182, 6.5 m2 plots located in the four thinning areas. Libraries are hankering for ‘em -- video-pioneers are flourishin’ -- to say a heap more about the homestead and show a smiling buckaroo. Lickety-split clips can reveal services the library provides for its pilgrims. Criminy, this process is not high falutin. With a little by-the-by and training, greenhorns can hit pay dirt: annex or create video then reckon up knowledge of library resources and the research process. Racism has become the “R-word,” an allegation that is so outrageous that it cannot even be spoken in public, let alone seriously addressed. In this brief exploration, I propose that it is exactly because racism continues to loom large in American society that talking about it has become taboo. In other words, banning the “R-word” serves a political function. It masks the failure of American society to confront the existence of racism and do something about its effects. Recent studies have produced a variety of advances in the investigation of genetic similarities and differences among human populations. Here, I pose a series of questions about human population- genetic similarities and differences, and I then answer these questions by numerical computation with a single shared population-genetic dataset. The collection of answers obtained provides an introductory perspective for understanding key results on the features of worldwide human genetic variation.

Water quality monitoring was conducted in two urban watersheds (Colonial Hills and Taylor Park) located in southeast Lincoln, NE over a three year period spanning from October 2008 through September 2011. In-line probes continuously measured for turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and water temperature while other water quality constituents were analyzed for discrete water samples collected using grab and automatic sampling techniques. The water quality data was used to calculate event mean concentrations (EMCs) for sixteen storm events sampled over the duration of the project period. The purpose of this research project was to assess the water quality of an urban stream for total maximum daily load assessment in Omaha, Nebraska. This was accomplished by sampling the water quality at four different sites. These sites included sampling upstream, within, and downstream of the city. These samples were conducted throughout 2010 and 2011.

The results showed that concentrations of Escherichia coli (E. coli) are routinely above established criteria for the state of Nebraska. Concentrations of E. coli that exist in the Papillion Creek Watershed upstream of the City of Omaha have also been shown to be above …

Non-native plants have invaded over 100 millions of acres of western arid land in the US and dramatically altered nutrient cycling rates. Changes in water cycling caused by invasive species are of particular interest because primary production in the Western US is typically limited by water availability and aquifer recharge reflects plant demand. Large-scale invasions can, therefore, be expected to cause large-scale changes in hydrological cycles, but until recently, there have been considerable limitations in the ability to measure the timing, location, and extent of water use. Heritability and genetic advance were estimated in four F₂ mungbean populations (Ramzan×ML-5, NM- 92×NM-1919, NM-1919×ML-5 and ML-5×NM-51) at two locations (Peshawar and Swat) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, during 2008. Combined analysis exhibited highly significant differences among the genotypes and locations for pods plant^-1, pod length, seeds pod^-1, 1000-seed weight and seed yield. Similarly, genotype-by-location interaction was highly significant for pods plant^-1 and 1000-seed weight. This study examined the relations between and the exchangeability of IQs from four brief and abbreviated intelligence tests. All four tests were administered to 40 college students and scored by one set of examiners and later scored by a second examiner. All IQs were submitted to a Generalizability theory analysis to examine the relative contributions of error variance components of “test” and “examiner” and their interactions in producing variance in IQs relative to the object of measurement, individual differences in general intelligence. Despite very strong mean reliability coefficients (i.e., .91 to .96), the resulting dependability coefficient was .75, which indicated …

The scholarship on exposure to violence suggests that traumatic and violent experiences place students at risk for exhibiting externalizing and internalizing behaviors that may impede academic performance. Chemotherapy-induce mucositis (CIM) is a dose-limiting side effect of cancer therapy with concurrent nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and decreased food consumption. Of the pediatric population approximately 40% of patients receiving standard dose and 100% of patients receiving high dose chemotherapy are afflicted. Although scientific advancements have improved pediatric cancer survival rates, occurrence of mucositis decreases quality of life, increases treatment interruptions or even delays therapy, and often reduces the dose. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the appropriate scale to detect Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense Lour.), an invasive plant species in Shelby Farms Park. To test predictions that accuracy of detection of Chinese Privet varies with the spatial resolution of WorldView-2 satellite imagery. Supervised maximum likelihood classifications are performed upon WorldView-2, 8-band multispectral image mosaics at 2, 4, 6, and 8 meter pixel resolutions. Population density of the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and associations of occurrence and density with selected habitat variables were studied at Meeman Biological Station from 2000-2006 and 2008-2010. Mark/recapture techniques were utilized to estimate density. Associations of density to habitat variables were assessed using a geographic information system. Density ranged from 1 Virginia opossum per 9.5 ha to 1 per 3.5 ha with a mean of 1 per 6.9 ha. Average precipitation the year prior was significantly correlated with density. Winter and spring precipitation significantly correlated with same-year density. Fall precipitation significantly correlated with following-year density. There were no correlations …

This study exposed the ramifications of childhood sexual abuse in regards to an African American woman's self-representation by contextualizing this experience within the larger cultural context; thereby, illuminating issues regarding race, class, gender, and relationships with others. Framed within a feminist theoretical paradigm, this study integrated the sociological context of race and culture using Black Feminist thought (Collins, 2000) and Relational Cultural Theory, which examines women's psychological identity development (Jordan, 2010; Miller, 1976). This study explores the nature of science in Germany and Turkey. Specifically, Iwant to know what science looks like in different settings, and how it interacts with other institutions of the state. Science is assessed within the two contexts at both an individual-societal and institutional level. Indicators of knowledge and attitudes are analyzed to identify individual orientations towards science. Discourse analysis is used to evaluate the nature of science within legislatures and national academies, as well as the overall state scientific bureaucracy. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a surgical technique commonly used to exclude bacteria and soft tissues from bone graft sites in oral/maxillofacial bone graft sites by using a barrier membrane to maintain the graft contour and space. Current clinical barrier membrane materials based on expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and bovine type 1 collagen are non-ideal and experience a number of disadvantages including membrane exposure, bacterial colonization/biofilm formation and premature degradation, all of which result in increased surgical intervention and poor bone regeneration. High throughput technologies such as DNA microarray have been widely used to simultaneously measure the expressions of thousands of genes. Analysis of such data often yields to high false positive and false negative rates. When multiple datasets addressing the same scientific question are available, it is clear that integrating them can be more informative, with superior operating characteristics, than any individual study. Pooling the P-values of the statistical tests from the individual studies presents a feasible and proven solution for integrating heterogeneous datasets. This research is focused on appplying mass spectrometry based methods to understand the conformational changes of bioactive peptides in solution. In this dissertation, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) coupled with hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX) has been employed to probe the secondary structure of selected peptides in membrane-mimetic enviroments. The membrane-mimetic systems used in our study include water and trifluoroethanol (TFE).
