Molecular Phylogeny Of Aspergillus Species Based On The Internal Transcribed Spacer Region, Tiarra Nicole Spencer
Molecular Phylogeny Of Aspergillus Species Based On The Internal Transcribed Spacer Region, Tiarra Nicole Spencer
Theses (Pre-2016)
Molecular markers, also called genetic barcodes, are those segments of DNA that have unique characteristics which can be used in the identification and delineation of species, or phylotypes, in organisms. This is important in the study of phylogenetic diversity of microorganisms, 95 percent of which are unculturable. There have been ongoing research and success in recognizing markers for many organisms, such as 16S rRNA for bacteria and cytochrome oxidase I for animals. The Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region has been gaining popularity as a marker in fungal species identification. However, the ability of the ITS region to discriminate among geographic …
A Survey Of Heterologous Expression Systems For The Production Of Bovine Follicle Stimulating Hormone And Luteinizing Hormone, Marcia Hesser
A Survey Of Heterologous Expression Systems For The Production Of Bovine Follicle Stimulating Hormone And Luteinizing Hormone, Marcia Hesser
All Dissertations
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are glycoprotein gonadotropins from the anterior pituitary gland that are involved in reproductive functions. They are heterodimeric proteins that share a common α-subunit that is highly conserved amongst mammalian species, and is also conserved across this family of proteins. The β-subunit confers receptor specificity and is distinct. Recombinant gonadotropin expression would be an important advance for the bovine superovulation industry, as there are a number of disadvantages associated with the currently used pituitary-derived gonadotropins. For example, these pituitary products are contaminated with other proteins including hormones, exhibit batch-to-batch inconsistencies, and harbor the …
Decolorization Of An Azo And Anthraquinone Textile Dye By A Mixture Of Living And Non-Living Trametes Versicolor Fungus, Christine M. Dykstra
Decolorization Of An Azo And Anthraquinone Textile Dye By A Mixture Of Living And Non-Living Trametes Versicolor Fungus, Christine M. Dykstra
HIM 1990-2015
Wastewater from the textile industry is difficult to treat effectively due to the prevalent use and wide variety of synthetic dyes that are resistant to conventional treatment methods. White-rot fungi, such as Trametes versicolor, have been found to be effective in decolorizing many of these synthetic dyes and current research is focusing on their application to wastewater treatment. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the ability of both living and nonliving Trametes versicolor to separately decolorize textile dyes, no studies were found to have investigated the use of a mixture of live and dead fungus for decolorization. This study …

Evaluation Of Delivery Conditions For Cutaneous Plasmid Electrotransfer Using A Multielectrode Array, Bernadette Ferraro, Loree C. Heller, Yolmari L. Cruz, Siqi Guo, Amy Donate, Richard Heller
Bioelectrics Publications
Electroporation (EP) is a simple in vivo method to deliver normally impermeable molecules, such as plasmid DNA, to a variety of tissues. Delivery of plasmid DNA by EP to a large surface area is not practical because the distance between the electrode pairs, and therefore the applied voltage, must be increased to effectively permeabilize the cell membrane. The design of the multielectrode array (MEA) incorporates multiple electrode pairs at a fixed distance to allow for delivery of plasmid DNA to the skin, potentially reducing the sensation associated with in vivo EP. In this report, we evaluate the effects of field …
Resources For Assisting Elderly Individuals With Insomnia: An Occupational Therapy Perspective, Michelle Linn Anderson
Resources For Assisting Elderly Individuals With Insomnia: An Occupational Therapy Perspective, Michelle Linn Anderson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
The purpose of this scholarly project is to provide a resource manual for elderly individuals, and those providing care to elderly people, to assist the individual in relieving symptoms of insomnia. Insomnia affects elderly individuals worldwide. Studies document that approximately 50% of individuals in the United States over the age of 65 are noted to have either clinically diagnosed or self-diagnosed insomnia (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2007). As the population worldwide continues to age, it is important that occupational therapists, elderly individuals, family members and care providers be aware of the impact that symptoms of insomnia may …
Interspousal Claims At The Crossroads Of Tort Law And Family Law: The Delicate Balance Between Family And Individual, Biagio Andò
Interspousal Claims At The Crossroads Of Tort Law And Family Law: The Delicate Balance Between Family And Individual, Biagio Andò
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This paper discusses the solutions adopted by Italian law (on which this study is mainly focused) and U.S. law as to the issue of recoverability of non-monetary damages suffered by one spouse for the intentional tortious conduct of the other. These suits are usually raised within the divorce proceeding and are grounded in the Italian law on the breach of conjugal duties.
In Italian law, notwithstanding the absence of specific provisions ruling this issue, and therefore the application of the general provisions on tort law not being barred, there was in the past a sort of immunity of family from …
Understanding Depressive Symptoms Among High-Risk Pregnant African American Women, Kristine M. Molina, Michele Kiely
Understanding Depressive Symptoms Among High-Risk Pregnant African American Women, Kristine M. Molina, Michele Kiely
Publications and Research
Much has been written about depression and its risk factors, particularly among women. However, a growing body of literature on prenatal depression has begun to emerge, given that depression during pregnancy presents a major public health concern, since it is found to be a common experience among childbearing aged women (Gaynes et al., 2005; Marcus, 2009). In fact, the onset of depressive symptoms is most likely to occur between 20 to 40 years of age, the range when most women become pregnant (Marcus & Heringhausen, 2009). Further, prior studies have found rates of depression among pregnant women to range from …
Analyzing Predator-Prey Models Using Systems Of Ordinary Linear Differential Equations, Lucas C. Pulley
Analyzing Predator-Prey Models Using Systems Of Ordinary Linear Differential Equations, Lucas C. Pulley
Honors Theses
The main operating concern of all species in any ecosystem or natural environment is rooted in the battle for survival. This constant battle for survival is most highlighted in the two main modes of species interaction; categorized as predation or competition. This research focused on applying biological mathematics to analyzing predation relationships, especially the relationship between the Canadian Lynx and the Snowshoe Hare. This predation relationship is quite special, because these species interact in a relatively isolated manner compared to others, meaning their populations fluctuated in a regular cycle. These population fluctuations can be defined and analyzed mathematically using systems …
Effects Of Nicotine And Emotional Priming On Ability To Inhibit Eye-Gaze Toward Emotional Stimuli In An Antisaccade Task In Nonsmokers, Nathaniel J. Wachter
Effects Of Nicotine And Emotional Priming On Ability To Inhibit Eye-Gaze Toward Emotional Stimuli In An Antisaccade Task In Nonsmokers, Nathaniel J. Wachter
Honors Theses
Saccadic eye movement tasks like the antisaccade task (AST) have been used to assess impulsivity and response inhibition in a variety of populations, including tobacco-abstinent smokers. Previous studies using ASTs have shown nicotine to reduce reaction times (RTs) possibly reinforcing the habit of smoking. Research also shows nicotine to reduce attention to and distraction by emotionally negative stimuli, which may account for some of the ability of nicotine to reduce negative affect. The present study was the first to assess the interactive effects of nicotine, emotional priming and emotional target stimuli on AST performance in nonsmokers. Ten male and 14 …

Fourth Generation Environmental Law: Integrationist And Multimodal, Craig Anthony Arnold
Fourth Generation Environmental Law: Integrationist And Multimodal, Craig Anthony Arnold
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Institutional arrangements to protect the environment, manage natural resources, or regulate other aspects of society and the environment are not merely matters of optimal institutional design or choice. These arrangements result, at least in substantial part, from the evolution of interconnected social, legal, and ecological systems that are complex, dynamic, and adaptive. This Article makes the case that environmental law is evolving to become more integrationist and multimodal: using multiple modes and methods of environmental protection, often across multiple scales, but in integrated ways. Integrated multimodality is a feature of much of social life. Building on generational analyses of environmental …

Foraging Behavior And Risk Assessment Of Six Hummingbird Species In Monteverde, Costa Rica, May 2011, Emily Ellison
Foraging Behavior And Risk Assessment Of Six Hummingbird Species In Monteverde, Costa Rica, May 2011, Emily Ellison
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The predation risk allocation hypothesis (RAH) theorizes that animals display more anti-predator behavior in high-risk situations, and should spend less time foraging in high risk situations. Hummingbirds are risk sensitive foragers, and this study examines whether several different species of tropical hummingbirds can assess risk, supporting the RAH. Hummingbirds were presented with feeder location and view obstruction risk situations, and their preferences and foraging behaviors were used to determine their ability to assess risk. This study indicated that hummingbirds have the ability to assess risk, although species differed in their ability depending on the type and severity of the risk …
Prey Preference Of Megaphobema Mesomelas (Theraphosidae) In Relation To Prey Abundance And Chemical Defense, May 2011, Brendan Boyer
Prey Preference Of Megaphobema Mesomelas (Theraphosidae) In Relation To Prey Abundance And Chemical Defense, May 2011, Brendan Boyer
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Food preference is an integral part of what defines a species’ niche. Predators within the arthropod community must be able to deal with a variety of anti-predatory defenses. Because spiders vary in their responses to prey defenses, it is difficult to predict how each spider species will cope with them. This knowledge is important because spiders are common in nearly all ecosystems. In this experiment, I studied the feeding preference of Megaphobema mesomelas, a tropical spider of the family Theraphosidae, in relation to the abundance of potential prey species and prey chemical defenses. I found that cockroach nymphs were the …
Terrestrial Invertebrate Community Composition As An Indicator Of Forest Regeneration, May 2011, Valerie R. Milici
Terrestrial Invertebrate Community Composition As An Indicator Of Forest Regeneration, May 2011, Valerie R. Milici
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Forest regeneration will play an important role in the future of tropical biodiversity, as much has been lost to deforestation and continues to be degraded. Terrestrial arthropod composition in a community could be an indicator of succession level as arthropods are a highly diverse phylum and their short generation periods allow communities to adapt to changes much faster than plants or animals. This study tests the changes in community composition of terrestrial arthropods along a successional gradient. Pitfall traps were placed in four sites of varying regeneration, from farmland to old growth. It was found that abundance, species richness, and …
Foraging Efficiency And Polymorphism Of The Submajor Caste In E. Burchellii, May 2011, Nathan A. Sellers
Foraging Efficiency And Polymorphism Of The Submajor Caste In E. Burchellii, May 2011, Nathan A. Sellers
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Army ants are superefficient in their retrieval of prey. There are four distinct worker castes in Eciton burchellii each important to the high efficiency of foraging. When prey is too large for an individual it is segmented by workers into manageable pieces then conveyed to the bivouac. Workers carrying prey were collected to determine the relationship between prey size and the worker(s) carrying prey as well as examine prey as an evolutionary pressure for selection of the submajor caste. Results show length and width are poor determinants of which caste is performing the retrieval task, as all castes are equally …
Bridge Building And Foraging Efficiency In The Army Ant Eciton Burchellii, May 2011, Daniel Brunelle
Bridge Building And Foraging Efficiency In The Army Ant Eciton Burchellii, May 2011, Daniel Brunelle
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Efficiency in food transport is vital for all organisms. Eusocial insects are efficient because of decentralized colony control, caste specialization, and unique behaviors. Bridge building in the army ant Eciton burchellii has been widely studied as a mechanism that augments prey transport efficiency. Little data exist on why bridges confer an advantage and how their dimensions facilitate rapid food delivery. It is also less well studied how efficiency on a bridge compares to the average efficiency of ant traffic on transport pathways that do not have ant bridges. Bridge lengths and widths were recorded and patterns were looked for between …
Behavior Of The Blue-Diademed Motmot (Momotus Lessonii) When Hearing Predator And Conspecific Calls, May 2011, Hannah Kornbrath
Behavior Of The Blue-Diademed Motmot (Momotus Lessonii) When Hearing Predator And Conspecific Calls, May 2011, Hannah Kornbrath
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Interspecific interactions between predators and prey have lead to a number of evolutionary adaptations that benefit predator and prey, such as pursuit-deterrent signals. These non-aggressive signals from prey to predator are advantageous for both: the predator wastes no energy on what would be an unsuccessful attack and the prey conserves energy by avoiding the need to escape. The blue-diademed motmot (Momotus lessonii) is a species that benefits from its pursuit-deterrent tail wag display, which tells predators that it is aware of their presence and is prepared to flee. The behavioral responses of M. lessonii in the Monteverde area to conspecific, …
Characterization Of The Phytochelatin Synthase Of Schistosoma Mansoni, Debalina Ray, David L. Williams
Characterization Of The Phytochelatin Synthase Of Schistosoma Mansoni, Debalina Ray, David L. Williams
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Treatment for schistosomiasis, which is responsible for more than 280,000 deaths annually, depends exclusively on the use of praziquantel. Millions of people are treated annually with praziquantel and drug resistant parasites are likely to evolve. In order to identify novel drug targets the Schistosoma mansoni sequence databases were queried for proteins involved in glutathione metabolism. One potential target identified was phytochelatin synthase (PCS). Phytochelatins are oligopeptides synthesized enzymatically from glutathione by PCS that sequester toxic heavy metals in many organisms. However, humans do not have a PCS gene and do not synthesize phytochelatins. In this study we have characterized the …

1983: The Most Dangerous Year, Andrew R. Garland
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A series of otherwise unrelated events culminated to make 1983 the most dangerous year the world has ever known, with the United States and the Soviet Union even closer to war than during the much more well-known events of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The crisis of 1983 arose from a sequence of accidents, misunderstandings, and mistakes. From highly publicized events such as President Ronald Reagan‘s application of morality to foreign policy to the Soviet Union‘s attempt to discover NATO‘s secret attack plans, an extraordinary confluence of events brought the two superpowers closer to nuclear exchange than is commonly believed. …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This creative dissertation is a fabulist and satirical novel. The book follows the story of main character and narrator Earleen, an atypical and hyper-intelligent sixteen-year-old who continues to be traumatized by her sociopathic father even after he dies. A self-taught bookworm born in the early 1980s, her formative years were spent trapped inside her parents' rural methamphetamine cookhouse. When her parents blow up inside their house during a drug-manufacturing incident on the eve of Earleen's early adolescence, she finds herself in the arms of an affluent adoptive couple (Dennis Stark, a fertility specialist, and his homemaker wife Beverly) who have …
