As a unit in the National Park Service (NPS), Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR) is responsible for the management and conservation of natural resources within its boundaries. This mandate is supported by the National Park Service Organic Act of 1916, which directs the NPS to:

Background: The nonautonomous maize Ds transposons can only move in the presence of the autonomous element Ac. They comprise a heterogeneous group that share 11-bp terminal inverted repeats (TIRs) and some subterminal repeats, but vary greatly in size and composition. Three classes of Ds elements can cause mutations: Ds-del, internal deletions of the 4.6-kb Ac element; Ds1, ~400-bp in size and sharing little homology with Ac, and Ds2, variably-sized elements containing about 0.5 kb from the Ac termini and unrelated internal sequences. In this thesis, a new approach for developing practically realizable dynamic models for continuum robots is proposed. Based on the new dynamic models developed, a novel technique for analyzing the capabilities of continuum manipulators to be employed in various real world applications has also been proposed and developed.
A section of a continuum arm is modeled using lumped model elements (masses, springs and dampers). A greenhouse study was set up in January 2011 to investigate the effect of soil myrosinase concentration and Bacillus spp. on the release efficiency of isothiocyanates (ITCs) from freeze-dried `Pacific Gold' mustard leaf tissue after incorporation into soil. Seventeen diverse soil samples collected from various regions of South Carolina were used in the study. A correlation analysis was conducted to determine if soil myrosinase was positively correlated with ITC concentrations after mustard incorporation. ITC concentrations were then analyzed with soilborne Bacillus spp. populations, bean emergence, disease incidence, and shoot weight to identify significant correlations. Over the past 25 years, federal government entities have become involved in defining and regulating misconduct in scientific research. Consistently, these definitions of research misconduct forbid three key actions--falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism--but do not take into account other professional communication issues, mainly authorship. This lack of acknowledgement and regulation of authorship--particularly from the Office of Research Integrity, the nation's highest research ethics body--seems to imply and communicate that the ethics of authorship are not important in science. Although recycling irrigation water is beneficial to the nursery industry as it serves to decrease potable water usage and reduces the release of excess agrichemicals into the environment, it also poses the risk of becoming the source for and means of dispersing water-borne plant pathogens. Plant pathogens of major concern in irrigation water are species of Phytophthora. These pathogens are a significant threat because they can attack a vast number of plants, many of which are ornamental crops grown in nurseries, by releasing motile zoospores directly into irrigation water. Bullying among children and adolescents, particularly within the school setting, has drawn much attention in recent years as a reaction to an onslaught of high profile school violence in the 1990s. While much attention and research focused upon physical violence that was prevalent among male students, very little research covered indirect, relational, and social forms of aggression. Research into the covert manners of aggression that involved the manipulation of relationships revealed them to be salient among female students, demonstrating that female students were predominantly aggressive in a different manner than their male counterparts. Eastern gray squirrels inhabit a large range of heterogeneous habitats and climates, and live with various levels of anthropogenic disturbance. Previous studies have examined this species in unmodified and modified surroundings; however, a comparison of populations between these habitats has yet to be published. Their widespread occurrence coupled with their success in urban areas and the invasive nature of introduced populations, suggests this species is behaviorally flexible. Mapping historical vegetation in Oregon and Washington has been ongoing since about 1993. It is based primarily on General Land Office (GLO) surveyors' descriptions of vegetation, recorded between 1851 and about 1940. For areas along the coast and the lower Columbia River, topographic maps ("T-sheets") of the U.S. Coast Survey (later called U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and more recently the National Geodetic Survey)—based on field work conducted between 1852 and 1889—have been integrated whenever possible with GLO data because of their superior cartography and land cover symbology. Since amendments to NCLB in 2004, public schools have not only established single-sex schools, but have also established single-sex classrooms within coeducational schools. Most of these modifications were adopted as a means to provide support to lowachieving students, many of who reside in urban settings. Proponents of single-sex instruction state that mostly African Americans, Hispanics, and females benefit most from this type of instructional setting because single-sex environments help to reduce gender stereotypes students encounter in coeducational settings. An enzymatic, fluorescent glucose sensor was constructed with a novel epoxy-Based, optically transparent dry film resist (PerMX 3000 series, DuPont). This material was utilized as the main active material for fluidic structure and optical interrogation. This sensor was based on the enzymatic reaction of glucose oxidase (GOD) and utilized a ruthenium complex fluorophore as the reporting agent. High temperatures can negatively impact Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations by reducing reproductive effort or altering habitat use. In western Texas, Northern Bobwhite commonly nest in prickly pear cactus (Opuntia spp.) instead of their typical nesting substrate of bunchgrass habitat. We tested the hypothesis that bobwhites nest in prickly pear cactus because it offered a cooler microclimate than bunchgrass. Our objectives were to compare 1) operative temperature between bunchgrass and prickly pear habitat and 2) egg hatchability and clutch size between bobwhite nests located in either prickly pear or bunchgrass plants. An Initial Analysis Of The Role Of Sts-1 And Sts-2 In The Development Of Regulatory T Cells, Nithya Sivaram

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a critical role in down-regulating immune responses to self antigens. Here we assess the significance of Sts-1 and Sts-2, two protein phosphatases that negatively regulate TCR signaling, in the development and maintenance of Tregs. We show that the number of splenic Tregs in vivo is elevated in the absence of Sts-1and Sts-2. We also found that Sts-1 and Sts-2 play a redundant role in TGF--mediated induction of Tregs in vitro. These data indicate that the Sts proteins are crucial for the maintenance of normal Treg populations in mice and also in TGF--mediated induction of Tregs …

Due to criticisms of early na?Ève group selection arguments, most evolutionary biologists hesitate to invoke selection at any level higher than the individual. Subsequent group selection arguments, while attempting to address conflicts between individual and group interests, have remained focused on individuals as units and have consequently been limited in scope. By focusing on groups as evolutionary units while avoiding the errors of earlier arguments, a simple, yet informative view emerges in which selection for groups capable of persisting favors those that are both superior in terms of group formation/extinction rates and stable with respect to individual selection. This study aimed to develop growth centiles at different gestational weeks for fetal biparietal diameter, abdominal circumference, femur length and head circumference in a Pakistani cohort. Data were collected at a tertiary referral hospital from pregnant women at gestational ages 13-40 weeks referred for obstetric ultrasound as a part of routine antenatal care. A total of 1599 fetal sonographic biometric measurements were collected after screening for the inclusion criteria. For each measurement, separate regression models were derived to estimate the mean, standard deviation and reference percentiles at each week of gestational age for this cohort. Objectives: Empathy is an essential factor for physician-patient communication. Personality traits and emotional intelligence can enhance the quality of one's empathic relating. This study explored the relationships among personality traits, perceived emotional intelligence (PEI), and physician empathy in medical students. Methods: Three hundred and twenty-three Taiwanese medical students completed a survey packet consisting of three standardized instruments: the Mini-Marker Scale, the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS), and the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy ‒ Student Version (JSPE-S). Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using numerous types of coating materials may exhibit different toxicity effects. The study evaluated coating material dependent toxicity by selecting 3 types of AgNP synthesis methods with different coating materials (citrate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and branched polyethyleneimine, coated AgNPs as citrate-AgNPs, PVP-AgNPs, and BPEI-AgNPs respectively). Two acute aquatic toxicity tests were performed; 48hr D. magna and MetPLATE E. coli toxicity tests. Significantly different toxicity effects were observed in D. magna test exhibiting lethal median concentrations (LC50) for citrate-AgNPs, PVP-AgNPs, and BPEI AgNPs respectively as, 2.7, 11.2, and 0.57μg/L.
