The Implications Of Water Insecurity For Fragile And Failing States: The Case Of Pakistan, Jennifer Norins
The Implications Of Water Insecurity For Fragile And Failing States: The Case Of Pakistan, Jennifer Norins
Graduate Masters Theses
As we become more firmly established in the 21st century, the international system faces a number of increasingly more difficult challenges that pose threats to global security and human progress. Among these challenges, water scarcity and failing states have each received prominent attention in both the academic and policy realms. Water serves a number of critical purposes for human survival and socio-economic activity. The threat of water scarcity is becoming increasingly salient and the capacity of states to ensure water security, and other securities which water security supports, is being tested. Fragile and failing states also occupy significant space in …
Developing Interprofessional Collaboration: An Action Research Approach To Change In Residential Care, Denise F. O Leary
Developing Interprofessional Collaboration: An Action Research Approach To Change In Residential Care, Denise F. O Leary
Theses
This thesis presents a study which aimed to develop interprofessional teams to drive organisational change at residential care facilities in order to gain insight into the processes involved, as well as the factors influencing them. It is unrealistic to create a team and expect team members to immediately act in a collaborative way to address team goals, yet the development process has been largely overlooked in the literature. This thesis addresses this gap. Healthcare providers at three residential care facilities for older people were invited to become involved in the study and teams were successfully set up at two facilities. …
Evaluating Fungicide Recommendations For Vegetable Crops In The United States: Should More Be Done To Limit The Risks Of Fungicide Resistance Development?, Andy Wyenandt, Nancy L. Maxwell
Evaluating Fungicide Recommendations For Vegetable Crops In The United States: Should More Be Done To Limit The Risks Of Fungicide Resistance Development?, Andy Wyenandt, Nancy L. Maxwell
Journal of Extension
Fungicides are an important component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs developed for vegetable production. Without fungicides, commercial vegetable production would not be economically feasible in many regions of the U.S. Recommendations for fungicide use in commercial vegetable production are developed and delivered by Extension in state and regional production guides. Efforts have been made by the chemical industry and Extension to increase the awareness of fungicide resistance development. The article reviews fungicide resistance development and management and current progress and areas of needed improvement in fungicide resistance management guidelines developed for commercial vegetable production in the U.S.
The Case For Cultural Genocide: The Formulation Of A Working Definition, Tye Tavaras
The Case For Cultural Genocide: The Formulation Of A Working Definition, Tye Tavaras
Theses and Dissertations
The Genocide Convention is hailed as a great protection mechanism and the one document that will prevent future destruction of groups. This convention however, has a variety of shortcomings that fail to protect groups outside of attempted physical destruction. An article criminalizing cultural genocide is a devastating omission and this paper seeks to create a working legal definition to be used a framework for creating an article or convention to provide such criminalization. Beginning with an analysis of the drafting of the Genocide Convention with particular attention paid to the importance of culture in the foundation of the convention as …
Allele Frequency Estimation From Ambiguous Data: Using Resampling Schema In Validating Frequency Estimates And In Selective Neutrality Testing, Jose Manuel Nunes, Maria Eugenia Riccio, Jean-Marie Tiercy, Alicia Sanchez-Mazas
Allele Frequency Estimation From Ambiguous Data: Using Resampling Schema In Validating Frequency Estimates And In Selective Neutrality Testing, Jose Manuel Nunes, Maria Eugenia Riccio, Jean-Marie Tiercy, Alicia Sanchez-Mazas
Human Biology
The development of molecular typing techniques applied to the study of population genetic diversity originates data with increasing precision but at the cost of some ambiguities. As distinct techniques may produce distinct kinds of ambiguities, a crucial issue is to assess the differences between frequency distributions estimated from data produced by alternative techniques for the same sample. To that aim, we developed a resampling scheme that allows evaluating, by statistical means, the significance of the difference between two frequency distributions. The same approach is then shown to be applicable to test selective neutrality when only sample frequencies are known. The …

Characterization Of Variant Strains Of Respiratory Adenoviruses Isolated In Egypt From 2003 To 2010, Pola Nashdy Demian
Theses and Dissertations
Human adenovirus (HAdV) has been associated with acute respiratory disease (ARD) in adult and pediatric patients in Egypt. Worldwide, adenovirus of species B, C, and E are predominantly associated with ARD. As part of an influenza-like illness (ILI) surveillance program in Egypt, we isolated 99 adenoviruses from 2003 to 2010. Initial identification of the isolates was accomplished with immunofluorescence assays (IFAs) and then confirmed with multiplex and monoplex PCR protocols. Of the 99 isolates, 39 were species B, 54 were species C, and 1 was species E. Additionally, 5 isolates represented co-infections of both HAdV-B and HAdV-C. Molecular typing by …

Simulation Of Field Emission From Carbon Nanotubes Using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory And The Effect Of Nitrogen And Boron Doping, Sherif Tawfik
Theses and Dissertations
We investigated the mechanism of electron field emission in prestine short carbon nanotubes using ab-initio computation in isolated and periodic simulation cells. We computed the evolution of the wave functions using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, where we have utilized the Crank-Nicholson propagator. We found that in prestine carbon nanotubes, emitted charge tends emerge mostly from electrons that are concentrated at the nanotube tip region, unlike metallic tips. The charge beam concentrates into specific channel structures as the wave function approaches the anode. Nitrogen doping of carbon nanotubes improves emission, in line with experimental findings, and the nitrogen dopant closer to …

The Impact Of Modern Weathering On The Geochemistry Of A Marine Permo-Triassic Boundary Section, Jeremy Christopher Williams
The Impact Of Modern Weathering On The Geochemistry Of A Marine Permo-Triassic Boundary Section, Jeremy Christopher Williams
Graduate Masters Theses
The Permian-Triassic Boundary (PTB) marks the end-Permian extinction, the greatest mass extinction recorded in Earth's history. The Attargoo PTB section located in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India was situated along the north continental margin of Gondwana-land in the Neo-Tethys Ocean during the end-Permian extinction. In Spiti Valley, PTB sections such as Attargoo are exposed by a thin (~ 2cm) ferruginous layer separating the Permian black shale from Triassic Limestone. Studies that have presented geochemical data to support a theory of the end-Permian extinction lack any interpretation of post-depositional effects on Spiti Valley PTB sections. In order to accurately present a …

Resolving Insurgencies, Thomas R. Mockaitis Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Understanding how insurgencies may be brought to a successful conclusion is vital to military strategists and policymakers. This study examines how past insurgencies have ended and how current ones may be resolved. Four ways in which insurgencies have ended are identified. Clear-cut victories for either the government or the insurgents occurred during the era of decolonization, but they seldom happen today. Recent insurgencies have often degenerated into criminal organizations that become committed to making money rather than fighting a revolution, or they evolve into terrorist groups capable of nothing more than sporadic violence. In a few cases, the threatened government …

Taxonomic Composition, Paleoecology And Biostratigraphy Of Late Cretaceous Diatoms From Devon Island, Nunavut, Canadian High Arctic, Jakub Witkowski, David M. Harwood, Karen Chin
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Upper Cretaceous sediments of the Kanguk Formation exposed in Eidsbotn and Viks Fiord grabens on Devon Island, Nunavut, Canadian High Arctic, yielded 91 fossil marine diatom species and varieties (including indeterminate taxa), representing 41 genera. Excellent preservation of the assemblages was aided by shallow burial, protection in downfaulted linear grabens, and the presence of abundant volcanic material. Planktonic species and resting spores comprise nearly 70% of the diatom assemblage, and provided abundant food resources for the Late Cretaceous Arctic ecosystem. Deposition of the approximately 225 m-thick stratigraphic sequence was predominantly in a shallow marine neritic setting, with an upward progression …
The Human Gut Microbiome: Ecology And Recent Evolutionary Changes, Jens Walter, Ruth Ley
The Human Gut Microbiome: Ecology And Recent Evolutionary Changes, Jens Walter, Ruth Ley
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
The human gastrointestinal tract is divided into sections, allowing digestion and nutrient absorption in the proximal region to be separate from the vast microbial populations in the large intestine, thereby reducing conflict between host and microbes. In the distinct habitats of the gut, environmental filtering and competitive exclusion between microbes are the driving factors shaping microbial diversity, and stochastic factors during colonization history and in situ evolution are likely to introduce intersubject variability. Adaptive strategies of microbes with different niches are genomically encoded: Specialists have smaller genomes than generalists, and microbes with environmental reservoirs have large accessory genomes. A shift …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Passive administration of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) can effectively protect pigs against PRRSV infection. However, after PRRSV infection, pigs typically develop a weak and deferred NAb response. One major reason for such a meager NAb response is the phenomenon of glycan shielding involving GP5, a major glycoprotein carrying one major neutralizing epitope. We describe here a type II PRRSV field isolate (PRRSV-01) that is highly susceptible to neutralization and induces an atypically rapid, robust NAb response in vivo. Sequence analysis shows that PRRSV-01 lacks two N-glycosylation sites, normally present in wild-type (wt) PRRSV strains, …

Population Dynamics Of The Western Prickly Pear, Opuntia Macrorhiza (Cactaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler, Brigitte Tenhumberg
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Although most cacti that have been studied are long lived, following individually marked plants in Boulder County, Colorado, for >7 years, we determined that average life span of Opuntia macrorhiza, the western prickly pear, is 3 years. A few individuals probably live >10 years. Vegetative reproduction, produced by rooting of cladodes, exceeded reproduction by germination and establishment from seeds. Both types of new recruits, from vegetative reproduction and seeds, had higher death rates than established plants. Size and frequency of flowering increased with age, although size both increased and decreased, sometimes dramatically, between years. Flowering correlated more strongly with …

Secretive Marsh Bird Species Co-Occurrences And Habitat Associations Across The Midwest, Usa, Jason R. Bolenbaugh, Sarah E. Lehnen, David G. Krementz
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Because secretive marsh birds are difficult to detect, population status and habitat use for these birds are not well known. We conducted repeated surveys for secretive marsh birds across 264 sites in the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Joint Venture region to estimate abundance, occupancy, and detection probabilities during the 2008 and 2009 breeding seasons. We identified species groups based on observed species co-occurrences. Two species, least bittern Ixobrychus exilis and American bittern Botaurus lentiginosus, co-occurred with other species less often than expected by chance, and two species groups, rails (Virginia rail Rallus limicola and sora Porzana carolina) and …

In Students' Words: The Development Of Student Attitudes Toward Mathematics - A Social Perspective, Dianne Kathryn Kelly
In Students' Words: The Development Of Student Attitudes Toward Mathematics - A Social Perspective, Dianne Kathryn Kelly
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Student interest in pursuing advanced studies and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) has garnered much attention lately from government, business, and education leaders due to inadequate flow in the United States' STEM pipeline. Existing research points to mathematical self-efficacy and to mathematical self-concept beliefs as integral to the likelihood that a student will pursue a career in a STEM field. Students' identities, such as the "good-math-student" identity need to be verified in order for students to enact them. Both identity verification and attitude are influenced by self-efficacy and self-concept. Existing research also points to teachers, parents, and …
The Role Of Data In Decision Making About Online Distance Education: A Case Study Of Three Community Colleges, William Allan Heineman
The Role Of Data In Decision Making About Online Distance Education: A Case Study Of Three Community Colleges, William Allan Heineman
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Community colleges face pressures to use data to make decisions as they expand online distance education, but practical and political factors as well as the emergent nature of online distance education can be obstacles to making decisions in this way. Using a multiple case study strategy, this study examined the following research questions: 1) How and to what extent do community college academic leaders use data when making decisions about online distance education? 2) What data about online distance education do community college academic leaders cite as influences on their decision making and how strong are those influences? 3) How …
