Budding Yeast, Branching Processes, And Generalized Fibonacci Numbers, Peter Olofsson, Ryan C. Daileda Jun 2011

Budding Yeast, Branching Processes, And Generalized Fibonacci Numbers, Peter Olofsson, Ryan C. Daileda

Mathematics Faculty Research

A real-world application of branching processes to a problem in cell biology where the generalized Fibonacci numbers known as k-nacci numbers play a crucial role is described. The k-nacci sequence is used to obtain asymptotics, computational formulas, and to justify certain practical simplifications. Along the way, an explicit formula for the sum of k-nacci numbers is established.

A Country Of Immigration? Situating German Multiculturalism In The New Europe, Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager Jun 2011

A Country Of Immigration? Situating German Multiculturalism In The New Europe, Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses a complex cultural and social phenomenon: German multiculturalism in the framework of the European Union in the century of globalization and global migration. I use selected cinematographic works by Fatih Akin, currently the most celebrated German and European filmmaker, as cultural texts. This project illuminates cultural controversies, political complexities, and the discriminatory nature of German multiculturalism. Specifically, I show how and why the German society eagerly accepts and successfully integrates Italian immigrants, yet, culturally marginalizes and socially excludes the Turks. My work illuminates how complex historical and political processes of the past, guided by the principle of …

Executive Function Development And Early Mathematics: Examination Of Dual Language Learners, Hattie A. Harvey Jun 2011

Executive Function Development And Early Mathematics: Examination Of Dual Language Learners, Hattie A. Harvey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the convergent validity between a third-party rating scale of executive function (EF) and a task-performance measurement of EF; examined the effects of age, gender, and dual language experience on preschool children‘s EF skills (inhibition, working memory (WM), and shifting) and on early mathematical skills; and investigated the contributions of inhibition, WM, and shifting to early mathematical skills. Ninety-two children attending Head Start were assessed. Correlation analyses revealed a number of relationships between the EF rating scale and the EF taskperformance measure. A multivariate analysis of variance revealed a main effect of age on all EF measures and …

Camp And Calcium Interactions In Endocrine Cells, Colette Crane Jun 2011

Camp And Calcium Interactions In Endocrine Cells, Colette Crane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inhibitors of cAMP phosphodiestereses (PDEs) promoted an increase in intracellular [cAMP]c and an influx of Ca2+, in both MMQ pituitary cells and α-Pancreatic cells. The specific targets for PDEs and the domains of PDEs are still unknown. Pituitary MMQ cells were used as a model to test modulation of calcium influx through the L-type calcium channel with PDE inhibitors. cAMP analogs were used to determine cAMP molecular targets. 8-cpt-cAMP initiated an Epac mediated pathway and had strong effects on calcium influx in the cell; suggesting, a relatively strong cAMP target. Experiments of α-Pancreatic cells were done in …

Man, The State, And Revolution, Nicholas Bowen Jun 2011

Man, The State, And Revolution, Nicholas Bowen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the progress that has been made in revolutionary theorising over the past few years, most theorists of social change continue to neglect the influence of opposition leaders upon the revolutionary process. One of the few exceptions in this regard is Max Weber. In his analysis of legitimate authority, Weber asserts that the charismatic form of authority rests on popular devotion to the normative order ordained by a specific person at a time of crisis.

Though his work offers some important insights into the revolutionary process, Weber fails to take into account the conditions that give rise to such forms …

Importance Of Behavior And Morphological Traits For Controlling Body Temperature In Littorinid Snails, Luke Miller, Mark Denny Jun 2011

Importance Of Behavior And Morphological Traits For Controlling Body Temperature In Littorinid Snails, Luke Miller, Mark Denny

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

For organisms living in the intertidal zone, temperature is an important selective agent that can shape species distributions and drive phenotypic variation among populations. Littorinid snails, which occupy the upper limits of rocky shores and estuaries worldwide, often experience extreme high temperatures and prolonged aerial emersion during low tides, yet their robust physiology—coupled with morphological and behavioral traits—permits these gastropods to persist and exert strong grazing control over algal communities. We use a mechanistic heat-budget model to compare the effects of behavioral and morphological traits on the body temperatures of five species of littorinid snails under natural weather conditions. Model …

Lipid Peroxidation And Neurodegenerative Disease, Tanea Reed Jun 2011

Lipid Peroxidation And Neurodegenerative Disease, Tanea Reed

Chemistry Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Lipid peroxidation is a complex process involving the interaction of oxygen-derived free radicals with polyunsaturated fatty acids, resulting in a variety of highly reactive electrophilic aldehydes. Since 1975, lipid peroxidation has been extensively studied in a variety of organisms. As neurodegenerative diseases became better understood, research establishing a link between this form of oxidative damage, neurodegeneration, and disease has provided a wealth of knowledge to the scientific community. With the advent of proteomics in 1995, the identification of biomarkers for neurodegenerative disorders became of paramount importance to better understand disease pathogenesis and develop potential therapeutic strategies. This review focuses on …

This study compared workplace protection factors (WPFs) for five different contaminants (endotoxin, fungal spores, (1→3)-β-D-glucan, total particle mass, and total particle number) provided by an N95 elastomeric respirator (ER) and an N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR). We previously reported size-selective WPFs for total particle numbers for the ER and FFR, whereas the current article is focused on WPFs for bioaerosols and total particle mass. Farm workers (n = 25) wore the ER and FFR while performing activities at eight locations representing horse farms, pig barns, and grain handling facilities. For the determination of WPFs, particles were collected on filters simultaneously …

From Sink To Resurgence: The Buffering Capacity Of A Cave System In The Tongass National Forest, Usa, Chris Groves, Melissa Hendrikson Jun 2011

From Sink To Resurgence: The Buffering Capacity Of A Cave System In The Tongass National Forest, Usa, Chris Groves, Melissa Hendrikson

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

The Tongass National Forest of Southeast Alaska, USA, provides a unique environment for monitoring the impact of the cave system on water quality and biological productivity. The accretionary terrane setting of the area has developed into a complex and heterogeneous geologic landscape which includes numerous blocks of limestone with intense karstification. During the Wisconsian glaciation, there were areas of compacted glacial sediments and silts deposited over the bedrock. Muskeg peatlands developed over these poorly drained areas. The dominant plants of the muskeg ecosystem are Sphagnum mosses, whose decomposition leads to highly acidic waters with pH as low as 2.4. These …

Using System Dynamics Modelling Approach To Develop Management Tools For Animal Production With Emphasis On Small Ruminants, L. O. Tedeschi, C. F. Nicholson, E. Rich Jun 2011

Using System Dynamics Modelling Approach To Develop Management Tools For Animal Production With Emphasis On Small Ruminants, L. O. Tedeschi, C. F. Nicholson, E. Rich

Agribusiness

Small ruminants are important assets in several regions of the world. They account for more than half of the domesticated ruminants. Despite the growth in goat production in the world (more than 2% per year), research related to goat production is less than desired. One underused but potentially valuable approach for research on small ruminants is simulation modelling. Models of the components of small ruminant systems can enhance the financial returns and reduce negative environmental impacts. These models can be used to assess many dimensions of small ruminant production, from rumen dynamics to economic policies designed to support small ruminant …

Poetry And The Multiple Drafts Model: The Functional Similarity Of Cole Swensen's Verse And Human Consciousness, Connor Ryan Kreimeyer Fisher Jun 2011

Poetry And The Multiple Drafts Model: The Functional Similarity Of Cole Swensen's Verse And Human Consciousness, Connor Ryan Kreimeyer Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project compares the operational methods of three of Cole Swensen's books of poetry (Such Rich Hour, Try, and Goest) with ways in which the human mind and consciousness function. I use Daniel Dennett's Multiple Drafts Model of consciousness, as described in Consciousness Explained, alongside concepts presented in several other philosophical works (from both analytic and continental traditions), to demonstrate that significant similarities exist between the operations of poetry and consciousness in general, and that these operational similarities are especially noticeable in Swensen's work. This thesis examines several operational modes that are present within the …

Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Decision-Making: Development Of A Survey Tool, Janeann M. Lineman Jun 2011

Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Decision-Making: Development Of A Survey Tool, Janeann M. Lineman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been projected that by 2020 one out of three children will originate from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) population (Rogers & Lopez, 2002). Thus, school psychologists are called to reexamine and modify their service-delivery methods to better meet the needs of CLD populations (Guerrero & Leung, 2008). The purposes of this study were: (1) to identify what a CLD problem-solving process looks like in the daily practices of school psychologists; (2) identify the impact of perceived value and skill level on the frequency of implementation practices of a CLD problem-solving model; and (3) identify if personal characteristics …

Personality Traits Predict Hierarchy Rank In Male Rainbowfish Social Groups, Mathieu Colléter, Culum Brown Jun 2011

Personality Traits Predict Hierarchy Rank In Male Rainbowfish Social Groups, Mathieu Colléter, Culum Brown

Sentience Collection

Personality traits are becoming increasingly important in explaining adaptive individual differences in animal behaviour and probably represent a leading edge of the evolutionary process. Despite the newfound interest in animal personality among behavioural ecologists, fewstudies have investigated the link between personality traits and fitness measures. We examined this link using male rainbowfish, Melanotaenia duboulayi, as a model species and found that a range of personality traits (aggression, activity and boldness) covaried with a male’s position in a hierarchy, which is directly related to reproductive success in this and many other species. Dominant fish were more aggressive, active, bold and also …

Successful Aging And The Epidemiology Of Hiv, David E. Vance, Teena Mcguinness, Karen Musgrove, Nancy Ann Orel, Pariya L. Fazeli Jun 2011

Successful Aging And The Epidemiology Of Hiv, David E. Vance, Teena Mcguinness, Karen Musgrove, Nancy Ann Orel, Pariya L. Fazeli

Gerontology Faculty Publications

By 2015, it is estimated that nearly half of those living with HIV in the US will be 50 years of age and older. This dramatic change in the demographics of this clinical population represents unique challenges for patients, health care providers, and society-at-large. Fortunately, because of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and healthy lifestyle choices, it is now possible for many infected with HIV to age successfully with this disease; however, this depends upon one’s definition of successful aging. It is proposed that successful aging is composed of eight factors: length of life, biological health, cognitive efficiency, mental health, …

Quantity And Quality: Unifying Food Web And Ecosystem Perspectives On The Role Of Resource Subsidies In Freshwaters, Amy Marcarelli, Colden V. Baxter, Madeleine Mineau, Robert O. Hall Jr. Jun 2011

Quantity And Quality: Unifying Food Web And Ecosystem Perspectives On The Role Of Resource Subsidies In Freshwaters, Amy Marcarelli, Colden V. Baxter, Madeleine Mineau, Robert O. Hall Jr.

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

Although the study of resource subsidies has emerged as a key topic in both ecosystem and food web ecology, the dialogue over their role has been limited by separate approaches that emphasize either subsidy quantity or quality. Considering quantity and quality together may provide a simple, but previously unexplored, framework for identifying the mechanisms that govern the importance of subsidies for recipient food webs and ecosystems. Using a literature review of >90 studies of open-water metabolism in lakes and streams, we show that high-flux, low-quality subsidies can drive freshwater ecosystem dynamics. Because most of these ecosystems are net heterotrophic, allochthonous …

Male Circumcision In The United States: The History, An Analysis Of The Discourse, And A Philosophical Interpretation, Jonathan D. Cohen Jun 2011

Male Circumcision In The United States: The History, An Analysis Of The Discourse, And A Philosophical Interpretation, Jonathan D. Cohen

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Routine neonatal circumcision is at the present time a procedure on the decline in the United States. This is largely due to the lack of medical justification for the surgery, as medical organizations today do not recommend the procedure. Despite the statements of medical boards, the subject of male circumcision is frequently discussed in the media, and portrayed as an ongoing and controversial debate. This thesis analyzes this discourse to attempt an understanding of what this discourse can show us about our culture and our understanding of the sexual nature of the human body. A review of the history of …

Camera Study For Mammalian Carnivore Presence Across Seasons In Montana De Oro State Park, San Luis Obispo County, Ca, Samuel R. Young

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Montana de Oro (MDO) is one of the largest state parks in California. Little is known however about its wildlife or their habits. Large predators such as mountain lion (Puma concolor) and black bear (Ursus americanus), and non–native species such as red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and feral pig (Sus scropha) are of management concern because of their potentially dramatic ecological roles. Cameras were deployed at 5 sites along the Coon Creek hiking trail in spring (May 3–June 7), summer (July 15–August 19), and fall (October 10–November 23) sessions with the goal of …

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This work of feminist children’s literature was inspired by Aimee Carrillo Rowe’s article, “Be Longing: Toward a Feminist Politics of Relation.” Rowe’s theory of relational belonging suggests that our identities are made in relation to the individual people we come into contact with as well as the communities of people with whom we engage. Since our surroundings are constantly changing this suggests that our identities are consistently altered as well. I have taken this theory and translated it into a format palatable for children. The result of this translation is a feminist children's book titled Josephine, Josie, Jo. The book …

Estrus Detection In Mares, Brianna Sandager, Rebecca Bott Jun 2011

Estrus Detection In Mares, Brianna Sandager, Rebecca Bott

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

In a successful horse-breeding program, it is im¬portant to understand the reproductive cycles and be¬haviors of a mare. The reproductive cycle of a mare is called the estrous cycle and lasts an average of 21 days from one ovulation to the next. Estrus is a period of time within the estrous cycle when the mare is recep¬tive to being bred and typically lasts from 5 to 8 days. The efficiency of your breeding program can be af¬fected by your ability or inability to detect estrus in a mare. When a mare is in estrus, it is often referred to as …
