Reaction Of Thiols With Formaldehyde In Presnce Of Succinimid And Reduction Of Phenyl Tetrazole Derivative With Hydrogen And Borohydraide, Abdul Faris Hussian Hachiam

Baghdad Science Journal

One of most the important compounds which have active hydrogen (substrate) is the thiols which used in a wide field in preparation of Mannich bases . A large number of Mannich bases have been prepared as a biologically active compound (pharmaceutical, pesticides, bactericidal, fungicidal and tuberculostatic) and in order to correlate their structure and reactivity with their pharmacological activity such as . It has been reported that the reaction is easily proceeded by using primary and secondary amine beside formaldehyde. But when we tried the reaction of thiols as substrate and formaldehyde and succinimide instead of amine, the reaction did …

Use Of Imaging Biomarkers To Assess Perfusion And Glucose Metabolism In The Skeletal Muscle Of Dystrophic Mice, Nabeel Ahmad, Ian Welch, Robert Grange, Jennifer Hadway, Savita Dhanvantari, David Hill, Ting-Yim Lee, Lisa M Hoffman

Robarts Imaging Publications

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe neuromuscular disease that affects 1 in 3500 boys. The disease is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration that results from mutations in or loss of the cytoskeletal protein, dystrophin, from the glycoprotein membrane complex, thus increasing the susceptibility of contractile muscle to injury. To date, disease progression is typically assessed using invasive techniques such as muscle biopsies, and while there are recent reports of the use of magnetic resonance, ultrasound and optical imaging technologies to address the issue of disease progression and monitoring therapeutic intervention in dystrophic mice, our study aims to validate …

A Theoretical Model Of Multi-Agent Quantum Computing, F. Matthew Mihelic Jun 2011

A Theoretical Model Of Multi-Agent Quantum Computing, F. Matthew Mihelic

Faculty Publications

The best design for practical quantum computing is one that emulates the multi-agent quantum logic function of natural biological systems. Such systems are theorized to be based upon a quantum gate formed by a nucleic acid Szilard engine (NASE) that converts Shannon entropy of encountered molecules into useful work of nucleic acid geometric reconfiguration. This theoretical mechanism is logically and thermodynamically reversible in this special case because it is literally constructed out of the (nucleic acid) information necessary for its function, thereby allowing the nucleic acid Szilard engine to function reversibly because, since the information by which it functions exists …

Antibacterial Activity Of Conjugated Electrolytes, Thomas S. Corbitt Jun 2011

Antibacterial Activity Of Conjugated Electrolytes, Thomas S. Corbitt

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A series of water soluble, cationic, anionic and zwitterionic conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with main chains based on an arylene ethynylene repeat unit structure with tetraalkylammonium and/or alkylsulfonate side groups were found to exhibit significant antibacterial activity. A number of these complexes also showed pronounced light-induced modulation of their effectiveness, with either biocidal enhancement or suppression, depending on such properties as singlet oxygen sensitization potential and lipophilicity. These collected studies examine the biocidal activity of the CPEs, as determined by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) and Flow Cytometry, correlating this activity with the photophysical properties of the polymers. We demonstrate biocidal …

Genome-Wide Identification Of Allele-Specific Expression (Ase) In Response To Marek’S Disease Virus Infection Using Next Generation Sequencing., Sean Maceachern, William M. Muir, Seth Crosby, Hans H. Cheng

Department of Animal Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Marek’s disease (MD), a T cell lymphoma induced by the highly oncogenic α-herpesvirus Marek’s disease virus (MDV), is the main chronic infectious disease concern threatening the poultry industry. Enhancing genetic resistance to MD in commercial poultry is an attractive method to augment MD vaccines, which is currently the control method of choice. In order to optimally implement this control strategy through marker-assisted selection (MAS) and to gain biological information, it is necessary to identify specific genes that influence MD incidence.

Methods

A genome-wide screen for allele-specific expression (ASE) in response to MDV infection was conducted. The highly inbred ADOL …

Burnout As A Function Of Eysenck’S Neuroticism Factor In Teachers Working With Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Shannon Prince

Theses

The purpose of this study is to observe the level of neuroticism in special education teachers working with children with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders (EBD) and how it is related to the level of burnout (i.e., chronic state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion; Center & Steventon, 2001) they experience. Two surveys, Friedman's Questionnaire on Teacher Burnout and Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire Brief Version, were delivered to special education teachers working with EBD students in self-contained classrooms in Western New York. The data were analyzed by correlating the teachers' level of neuroticism with their level of burnout. Results indicated a significant correlation between …

Distant Positioning Of Proteasomal Proteolysis Relative To Actively Transcribed Genes, Andrea Scharf, Petar N. Grozdanov, Roman Veith, Ulrich Kubitscheck, U. Thomas Meier, Anna Von Mikecz Jun 2011

Distant Positioning Of Proteasomal Proteolysis Relative To Actively Transcribed Genes, Andrea Scharf, Petar N. Grozdanov, Roman Veith, Ulrich Kubitscheck, U. Thomas Meier, Anna Von Mikecz

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

While it is widely acknowledged that the ubiquitin-proteasome system plays an important role in transcription, little is known concerning the mechanistic basis, in particular the spatial organization of proteasome-dependent proteolysis at the transcription site. Here, we show that proteasomal activity and tetraubiquitinated proteins concentrate to nucleoplasmic microenvironments in the euchromatin. Such proteolytic domains are immobile and distinctly positioned in relation to transcriptional processes. Analysis of gene arrays and early genes in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos reveals that proteasomes and proteasomal activity are distantly located relative to transcriptionally active genes. In contrast, transcriptional inhibition generally induces local overlap of proteolytic microdomains with …

Gender Perceptions In The Sport Of Snowboarding, Chelsea Modlin

Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration

Snowboarding evolved in the 1960s for people who wanted a change from skiing and to differentiate themselves from their parents. Since its creation, snowboarding has been dominated by males. This may be explained by its establishment and creation by males and the relationship of snowboarding to alternative cultures, where masculinity in style, speech, and behavior generally excel. The purpose of this study was to analyze the gender perceptions in the sport of snowboarding. This study was conducted through self-administered questionnaires. The results of the survey indicate that there are gender inequalities in snowboarding and that gender perceptions do vary by …
