Translational Neuroscience
Background: Despite its first discovery by in silico cloning of novel endothelial cell-specific genes a decade ago, the biological functions of endothelial cell-specific molecule 2 (ECSM2) have only recently begun to be understood. Limited data suggest its involvement in cell migration and apoptosis. However, the underlying signaling mechanisms and novel functions of ECSM2 remain to be explored. Methodology/Principal Findings: A rabbit anti-ECSM2 monoclonal antibody (RabMAb) was generated and used to characterize the endogenous ECSM2 protein. Immunoblotting, immunoprecipitation, deglycosylation, immunostaining and confocal microscopy validated that endogenous ECSM2 is a plasma membrane glycoprotein preferentially expressed in vascular endothelial cells (ECs). Expression patterns …

Identification Of Alternaria Alternata As A Causal Agent For Leaf Blight In Syringa Species, Margaret T. Mmbaga, Ainong Shi, Mee-Sook Kim
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
While many isolates of Alternaria alternata are common saprophytes on trees and shrubs, this study clearly demonstrated that A. alternata is a primary pathogen in lilac (Syringa sp.), causing a leaf-blight that affects different Syringa species. Isolates of Alternaria sp. were collected from leaf blight samples of lilacs in the field. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and morphological characterization were used to identify lilac blight pathogen. Based on 100% ITS nucleotide sequence identities to the Alternaria genus in the GenBank and morphological features, these isolates were identified as A. alternata. Disease symptoms were reproduced in lilac plants inoculated with …

Green Jobs And The Ohio Economy: The Workforce Skills And Training Ohio Green Industries Need, Wright State University, Center For Urban And Public Affairs, U.S. Department Of Labor Employment And Training Administration
Economic Development
In spring 2011, a survey was conducted with private employers representing selected sectors within the potential green industry. The following report presents research results about employers and the labor force skills they require to be successful in Ohio’s Green Industry.
As mentioned in earlier parts of this report series, there are many challenges to studying the green economy. The word “potential” in the first sentence of this report is a critical term, because there is no known listing of companies in the green industry. Green industry business association lists exist, but those are membership-based lists and not intended to be …

Comparing Fbg And Pcf Force Sensors In A Laparoscopic Smart Surgical Scissor Instrument, Dean Callaghan, Ginu Rajan, Mark Mcgrath, Eugene Coyle, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell
Conference Papers
This paper presents a sensorized laparoscopic surgical scissor instrument using both a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a tapered photonic crystal fiber (PCF) as force sensors. The sensors are located on the blades for the detection of interaction forces generated between the instrument and tissue during cutting. The force sensitivity of each sensorized blade is examined. Results show that the scissor blade-PCF sensor arrangement outperforms the blade with the FBG during static loading calibration experimentation. Moreover, experiments show that the PCF based arrangement is less sensitive to temperature effects than its FBG counterpart. This negates the need for additional temperature …

Rural Hospital System Affiliations And Their Effects On Hospital Economic Performance, 2004-2008, Mark Swofford
Rural Hospital System Affiliations And Their Effects On Hospital Economic Performance, 2004-2008, Mark Swofford
Theses and Dissertations
The formation of multi-hospital systems represents one of the largest structural changes in the hospital industry. As of 2008, system affiliated hospitals outnumbered stand alone hospitals 2511 to 2167 and the percentage of system affiliated rural hospitals has increased dramatically from 24.8% in 1983 to 42.2% in 2008 (based on AHA data for non-federal acute care general hospitals). The effects of system membership on hospital performance have been of great interest to health care researchers, but the majority of research on multi-hospital systems has either focused exclusively on urban facilities or pooled urban and rural facilities in the same sample, …

Infectivity Period Of Mice Inoculated With Human Adenoviruses, Rashmi Krishnapuram, Heather Kirk-Ballard, Aamri Zuberi, Nikhil V. Dhurandhar
Faculty Publications
Due to non-productive infections, mice are not a good model to study some human adenoviruses. However, mice provide an excellent model to study the metabolic effects of human adenovirus, Ad36. Research interest in Ad36 is increasing rapidly, and consequently an increase in the use of mice as a model is anticipated. However, little is known about the transmission potential of Ad36 from infected mice to other laboratory animals or personnel. While underestimating the infectivity could promote inadvertent spread of Ad36, overstating it could drain valuable laboratory resources and animals. Therefore, we determined the duration of infectivity in female C57BL/6J mice …
A Bayesian Model Averaging Approach For Observational Gene Expression Studies, Xi Kathy Zhou, Fei Liu, Andrew J. Dannenberg
A Bayesian Model Averaging Approach For Observational Gene Expression Studies, Xi Kathy Zhou, Fei Liu, Andrew J. Dannenberg
COBRA Preprint Series
Identifying differentially expressed (DE) genes associated with a sample characteristic is the primary objective of many microarray studies. As more and more studies are carried out with observational rather than well controlled experimental samples, it becomes important to evaluate and properly control the impact of sample heterogeneity on DE gene finding. Typical methods for identifying DE genes require ranking all the genes according to a pre-selected statistic based on a single model for two or more group comparisons, with or without adjustment for other covariates. Such single model approaches unavoidably result in model misspecification, which can lead to increased error …
Identification And Characterization Of A Stilbene Synthase Gene Family In Peanut Hairy Roots, Jose Marcos Condori
Identification And Characterization Of A Stilbene Synthase Gene Family In Peanut Hairy Roots, Jose Marcos Condori
Student Theses and Dissertations
Plants produce a large diversity of specialized metabolites in response to biotic and abiotic stimuli. Even though these metabolites are functional to plants as defense compounds, they also show a multitude of benefits in human health. Among these compounds are the stilbenoids. In addition to resveratrol, the most characterized of the stilbenoids, species like peanut produces several prenylated stilbenoids including arachidin-1 and arachidin-3. Recent studies suggest that these prenylated compounds have higher biological activities than resveratrol. Therefore there is a need to understand the mechanisms involved in the biosynthesis of these compounds. Some stilbene synthases involved in the biosynthesis of …

A Novel Methodology For Evaluating User Interfaces In Health Care, Luca Longo, Bridget Kane
A Novel Methodology For Evaluating User Interfaces In Health Care, Luca Longo, Bridget Kane
Conference papers
A pilot study is reported to identify an improved method of evaluating digital user interfaces in health care. Experience and developments from the aviation industry and the NASA-TLX mental workload assessment tools are applied in conjunction with Nielsen heuristics for evaluating an Electronic Health Record System in an Irish hospital. The NASA-TLX performs subjective workload assessments on operators working with various human-computer systems. Results suggest that depending on the cognitive workload and the working context of users, the usability will differ for the same digital interface. We conclude that incorporating the NASA-TLX with Nielsen's heuristics offers a more reliable method …

The Reality Of Neandertal Symbolic Behavior At The Grotte Du Renne, Arcy-Sur-Cure, France, François Caron, Francesco D'Errico, Pierre Del Moral
KIP Articles
The question of whether symbolically mediated behavior is exclusive to modern humans or shared with anatomically archaic populations such as the Neandertals is hotly debated. At the Grotte du Renne, Arcy-sur-Cure, France, the Châtelperronian levels contain Neandertal remains and large numbers of personal ornaments, decorated bone tools and colorants, but it has been suggested that this association reflects intrusion of the symbolic artifacts from the overlying Protoaurignacian and/or of the Neandertal remains from the underlying Mousterian. We tested these hypotheses against the horizontal and vertical distributions of the various categories of diagnostic finds and statistically assessed the probability that the …

"Movie To Movement: Creating Social Change With The Documentary Film 'Food Stamped'", Shira Potash
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
There is substantial evidence linking obesity to lower incomes. Governmental food and farm policy directly affects the affordability, availability, and accessibility of healthy food in low-income areas. Policy also impacts the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) and nutrition education for SNAP recipients. Documentary film is a powerful medium that can be used for social change. This paper explores the ways in which documentary film can be used to decrease health disparities and improve public health. Specifically it provides the scientific evidence and theoretical framework for the creation of the documentary film, Food Stamped. Similar to other popular documentary films such …

Multiplicity: An Organizing Principle For Cancers And Somatic Mutations, Lewis J. Frey, Stephen R. Piccolo, Mary E. Edgerton
Faculty Publications
Background: With the advent of whole-genome analysis for profiling tumor tissue, a pressing need has emerged for principled methods of organizing the large amounts of resulting genomic information. We propose the concept of multiplicity measures on cancer and gene networks to organize the information in a clinically meaningful manner. Multiplicity applied in this context extends Fearon and Vogelstein’s multi-hit genetic model of colorectal carcinoma across multiple cancers.
Methods: Using the Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), we construct networks of interacting cancers and genes. Multiplicity is calculated by evaluating the number of cancers and genes linked by the measurement …

Background
Listeria adhesion protein (LAP) is a housekeeping bifunctional enzyme consisting of N-terminal acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) and C-terminal alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). It aidsListeria monocytogenes in crossing the epithelial barrier through a paracellular route by interacting with its host receptor, heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60). To gain insight into the binding interaction between LAP and Hsp60, LAP subdomain(s) participating in the Hsp60 interaction were investigated.
Methods
Using a ModBase structural model, LAP was divided into 4 putative subdomains: the ALDH region contains N1 (Met1–Pro223) and N2 (Gly224–Gly411), and the ADH region contains C1 (Gly412–Val648) and C2 (Pro649–Val866). Each subdomain was …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized pathologically by progressive neuronal loss, extracellular plaques containing the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides, and neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau proteins. Aβ is thought to act upstream of tau, affecting its phosphorylation and therefore aggregation state. One of the major risk factors for AD is traumatic brain injury (TBI). Acute intra-axonal Aβ and diffuse extracellular plaques occur in ∼30% of human subjects after severe TBI. Intra-axonal accumulations of tau but not tangle-like pathologies have also been found in these patients. Whether and how these acute accumulations contribute to subsequent AD development is not …
