Rapidly expanding growth in the field of nanotechnology has led to the development of numerous applications of nanomaterials in industrial (e.g., paints, electronics) and consumer (e.g., cosmetics, clothing treatments) products. These engineered nanoparticle (NP)-containing products have, however, the potential to release particles (single or aggregates) or ions by means of wastewater discharge into the aquatic environment. SCENIHR (2006) emphasized that the behavior of NPs is critically dependent on several particle characteristics, including size, surface area and surface reactivity, and that risk assessments for both human health and the environment have to be based on these characteristics. However, in practice, risks …

The Socio-Demographic Progression Of The Pakistani Woman Manager 1988 To 2004: An Empirical Evidence From The Private Sector, Shehla Riza Arifeen
Business Review
The purpose of this study was to help identify the types of women who had opted for managerial professions in the private sector, and to identify any trends in the social, economic, or educational backgrounds that might have had a bearing on the types of women likely to pursue a managerial career. Research for the survey included 152 organizations in the private sector that had employed graduates from business educational institutions. Out of these 87 organizations reported women at managerial levels. 207 managerial women answered the mail survey. The findings suggest that the profession still remains the domain of upper-middle-class …
Read-React-Respond: An Integrative Model For Understanding Sexual Revictimization, Jennie G. Noll, John H. Grych
Read-React-Respond: An Integrative Model For Understanding Sexual Revictimization, Jennie G. Noll, John H. Grych
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Females who have been sexually abused in childhood are at significantly higher risk to be revictimized in adolescence and adulthood. Revictimization is associated with a raft of adverse mental and physical health outcomes, and so understanding why victims of childhood sexual abuse are more vulnerable to later sexual assaults has critical implications for their development. It has been hypothesized that sexual abuse in childhood results in reduced ability to recognize and/or respond effectively to sexual threats later in life, but studies examining these ideas have produced inconsistent results. Further, this research has failed to incorporate the powerful physiological reaction elicited …
Flapping Wing Design For A Dragonfly-Like Micro Air Vehicle, Daniel Prosser
Flapping Wing Design For A Dragonfly-Like Micro Air Vehicle, Daniel Prosser
Theses
In this thesis, the aerodynamics of the Quad-Wing Vehicle, a Micro Air Vehicle designed to hover with four flapping wings in a dragonfly-like configuration, is investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), potential flows analysis, and experimental testing. The CFD analysis investigates the kinematics-parameters design space and identifies values of kinematics parameters that maximize the vertical force production in hovering mode while minimizing the aerodynamic power requirement. It also investigates other important considerations, such as the effect of scaling, multi-wing interactions, and comparison with other flapping configurations. In the potential flows analysis, an unsteady 2D panel code is developed and compared …
A Short History Of Sex And Citizenship: The Historians' Amicus Brief In Flores-Villar V. United States, Kristin Collins
A Short History Of Sex And Citizenship: The Historians' Amicus Brief In Flores-Villar V. United States, Kristin Collins
Faculty Scholarship
The historians’ amicus brief that accompanies this essay was submitted to the Supreme Court in Flores-Villar v. United States, an equal protection challenge to federal statutes that regulate the citizenship status of foreign-born children of American parents. When the parents of such children are unmarried, federal law encumbers the ability of American fathers to secure citizenship for their children, while providing American mothers with a nearly unfettered ability to do the same. The general question before the Court in Flores-Villar – and a question that the Court has addressed in sum and substance on two other occasions during the last …
House Fly (Musca Domestica L.) Temporal And Spatial Immune Response To Streptococcus Pyogenes And Salmonella Typhimurium: Role Of Pathogen Density In Bacterial Fate, Persistence And Transmission, Rabecca Chifanzwa
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
House flies (Musca domestica L), feed and breed in decomposing organic waste and therefore are constantly in contact with different species of microorganisms. Because house flies live in close proximity to human and animal habitats, they pose a danger of transmitting pathogenic microorganisms from diseased sources to new environments. To elucidate pathogen vector potential of house flies, this study investigated dose-dependent survivability of GFPexpressing Streptococcus pyogenes and Salmonella typhimurium SR11 within the fly alimentary canal both spatially via epifluorescence microscopy and quantitatively via culture-recovery. Adult house flies were fed known amounts of bacteria (high or low dose), and were dissected …

Effects Of Sediment On Growth And Survival Of Various Juvenile Morphologies Of The Scleractinian Cora, Oculina Arbuscula (Verrill), Lauren Mallory Divine
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Sedimentation can play an important role in shaping tropical and temperate benthic marine communities. Here, I quantified sedimentation rates on a hard-bottom reef in the South Atlantic Bight (SAB) off the coast of Georgia, USA and assessed its effects on a conspicuous member of the benthic community: the scleractinian coral, Oculina arbuscula. I addressed the predictions that: 1) inorganic and organic sedimentation rates vary in relation to wind speed and wave height in the SAB, 2) the ability of juvenile O. arbuscula to shed sediment depends on skeletal morphology, and 3) inorganic sedimentation reduces growth and survival of encrusting O. …
The Ontogeny Of Escape Responses And Locomotor Performance In Sceloporus Woodi, Reed B. Stiller
The Ontogeny Of Escape Responses And Locomotor Performance In Sceloporus Woodi, Reed B. Stiller
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Predator prey interactions have the potential to shape patterns of natural selection. For prey, avoiding detection by predators is of primary importance; however prey species risk detection by movement. Other than crypsis, prey species also use secondary defenses when detected by a predator. The most common secondary defense is flight. Flight initiation distance describes the distance between a prey item and a predator where the benefits of fleeing outweigh the benefits of remaining stationary. There are many factors that influence flight initiation distance including ontogenetic stage, ability to escape, and the degree of crypsis. Of these, the ontogenetic effects on …
Molecular And Immunohistochemical Identification Of A Sodium Hydrogen Exchanger-2c (Nhe2c) Paralog In The Gills Of Marine Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus), Demi Brett Rabeneck
Molecular And Immunohistochemical Identification Of A Sodium Hydrogen Exchanger-2c (Nhe2c) Paralog In The Gills Of Marine Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus), Demi Brett Rabeneck
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Sodium hydrogen exchanger proteins (NHEs) are members of the cation proton antiporter superfamily (CPA) and are thought to function in fish for maintaining physiological ion concentrations and acid-base balances by excreting excess H+ ions from the body in exchange for Na+ ions. There are many more types of these proteins in teleost fish than in mammals due to putative genome duplication. This study describes a new form of NHE2 in the gills of marine longhorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus, designated NHE2c. Sequencing revealed that the NHE2c nucleotide-coding region transcribes a peptide 795 amino acids in length with an estimated molecular weight …

Early Childhood Bilingualism Leads To Advances In Executive Attention: Dissociating Culture And Language, Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Barbara Lust
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This study investigated whether early especially efficient utilization of executive functioning in young bilinguals would transcend potential cultural benefits. To dissociate potential cultural effects from bilingualism, four-year-old U.S. Korean-English bilingual children were compared to three monolingual groups – English and Korean monolinguals in the U.S.A. and another Korean monolingual group, in Korea. Overall, bilinguals were most accurate and fastest among all groups. The bilingual advantage was stronger than that of culture in the speed of attention processing, inverse processing efficiency independent of possible speed-accuracy trade-offs, and the network of executive control for conflict resolution. A culture advantage favoring Korean monolinguals …
Pregnancy Loss And Distress Among U.S. Women, Karina M. Shreffler, Arthur L. Greil, Julia Mcquillan
Pregnancy Loss And Distress Among U.S. Women, Karina M. Shreffler, Arthur L. Greil, Julia Mcquillan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Although pregnancy loss—especially miscarriage— is a relatively common experience among reproductive-aged women, much of our understanding about the experience has come from small clinic-based or other nonrepresentative samples. We compared fertility-specific distress among a national sample of 1,284 women who have ever experienced a stillbirth or miscarriage. We found that commitment/attachment to pregnancy that ended in loss as well as current childbearing contexts and attitudes were associated with distress following pregnancy loss. Practitioners working with women or couples who have experienced pregnancy loss should be aware of the importance of characteristics associated with higher distress, such as whether the pregnancy …

Testosterone (T) is thought to affect a variety of traits important for fitness, including coloration, the size of sexual ornaments, aggression, and locomotor performance. Here, we investigated the effects of experimentally elevated T and locomotor training on muscle physiology and running performance in a nonterritorial male lizard species (Aspidoscelis sexlineata). Additionally, several morphological attributes were quantified to examine other characters that are likely affected by T and/or a training regimen. Neither training alone nor training with T supplementation resulted in increased locomotor performance. Instead, we found that T and training resulted in a decrease in each of three …

Infertility Treatment And Fertility-Specific Distress: A Longitudinal Analysis Of A Population-Based Sample Of U.S. Women, Arthur L. Greil, Julia Mcquillan, Michele Lowry, Karina M. Shreffler
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Because research on infertile women usually uses clinic-based samples of treatment seekers, it is difficult to sort out to what extent distress is the result of the condition of infertility itself and to what extent it is a consequence of the experience of infertility treatment. We use the National Survey of Fertility Barriers, a two-wave national probability sample of U.S. women, to disentangle the effects of infertility and infertility treatment on fertilityspecific distress. Using a series of ANOVAs, we examine 266 infertile women who experienced infertility both at Wave 1 and at Wave 2, three years later. We compare eight …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVES: Interleukin-10 (IL-10) downregulates T-cell-mediated immune responses. We studied the association between IL-10 production by freshly isolated melanoma cell suspensions in vitro and overall survival in patients undergoing adjuvant treatment with a vaccine prepared from the same autologous melanoma cells modified with a hapten, dinitrophenyl (DNP).
METHODS: Forty-four patients with cutaneous melanoma (29 stage III and 15 stage IV) were prospectively evaluated. Tumor cells were extracted from metastatic deposits for production of DNP-modified autologous melanoma cell vaccine. Small aliquots of the melanoma cell suspensions were separated prior to vaccine processing and cultured overnight for IL-10 production. Based on a blind …

Hydraulic And Geospatial Analyses Of Stream Engineering And Habitat Restoration Near Los Lunas, Nm, Stephen Kissock
Civil Engineering ETDs
Stream restoration is a complex process encompassing multiple disciplines and organizations to achieve specific, immediate and long-term goals. Analyses of many completed projects are limited to narrow objectives that commonly exclude the same broad scopes envisioned during the planning process. This thesis studies one completed habitat restoration project in terms of its engineering and biological sustainability using geospatial analysis procedures not widely applied to these goals. These procedures include adjustment of a digital terrain model for hydraulic accuracy, the use of the digital terrain model and aerial imagery for the digitization of features used in hydraulic modeling, and the geospatial …

How parathyroid hormone (PTH) increases bone mass is unclear, but understanding this phenomenon is significant to the improvement of osteoporosis therapy. Nmp4/CIZ is a nucleocytoplasmic shuttling transcriptional repressor that suppresses PTH-induced osteoblast gene expression and hormone-stimulated gains in murine femoral trabecular bone. To further characterize Nmp4/CIZ suppression of hormone-mediated bone growth, we treated 10-week-old Nmp4-knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice with intermittent human PTH(1-34) at 30 μg/kg daily or vehicle, 7 days/week, for 2, 3, or 7 weeks. Null mice treated with hormone (7 weeks) gained more vertebral and tibial cancellous bone than WT animals, paralleling the exaggerated response in …

The rod photoreceptors are implicated in a number of devastating retinal diseases. However, routine imaging of these cells has remained elusive, even with the advent of adaptive optics imaging. Here, we present the first in vivo images of the contiguous rod photoreceptor mosaic in nine healthy human subjects. The images were collected with three different confocal adaptive optics scanning ophthalmoscopes at two different institutions, using 680 and 775 nm superluminescent diodes for illumination. Estimates of photoreceptor density and rod:cone ratios in the 5°–15° retinal eccentricity range are consistent with histological findings, confirming our ability to resolve the rod mosaic by …

Statistical Optimizations Of Muscle Action Potentials Based On Modeling And Analysis Of Ion Channel Dynamics, Gyutae Kim
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
An Electromyogram (EMG) is an electrical signal, which is measured from a skeletal muscle during voluntary and involuntary contractions. EMGs are useful in interpreting pathological states of the musculoskeletal system. In particular, EMGs offer valuable information concerning the timing of muscular activity and its relative intensity. Various EMG models have developed with many different purposes from a pure mathematical model to a pattern structure model [17,46]. Sophisticated EMG models are necessary to examine the effects of small changes in muscular morphology and activities [46]. Due to the crucial importance of EMG models, all factors in the model should be precise …

Self-Conscious Dicta: The Origins Of Roe V. Wade’S Trimester Framework, Randy Beck
Self-Conscious Dicta: The Origins Of Roe V. Wade’S Trimester Framework, Randy Beck
Scholarly Works
One of the controversies arising from Roe v. Wade (1973), has concerned whether the conclusions undergirding the opinion's “trimester framework” should be considered part of the holding of the case, or instead classified as dicta. Different Supreme Court opinions have spoken to this question in different ways. This article reviews materials from the files of Justices who participated in Roe, seeking insight as to what the Court thought about the issue at the time. The article concludes that Justices in the Roe majority understood the opinion’s trimester framework to consist largely of dicta, unnecessary to a ruling on the constitutionality …

Multistate Mark-Recapture Analysis Reveals No Effect Of Blood Sampling On Survival And Recapture Of Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus Tyrannus), Lucas J. Redmond, Michael T. Murphy
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The experimentally supported and prevailing opinion is that blood sampling has few to no long-term effects on survival of birds when conducted properly, and blood sampling has become a vital addition to the toolbox of many ornithologists. However, many of the studies that concluded that blood sampling had negligible effects on birds used approaches that did not account for temporary emigration and probability of capture. To date, the only study to have done so found that blood sampling had a strong negative effect on survival. We conducted a mark–recapture analysis of 8 years of banding and bleeding data on Eastern …
A Thermally Actuated Microelectromechanical (Mems) Device For Measuring Viscosity, Ivan Puchades
A Thermally Actuated Microelectromechanical (Mems) Device For Measuring Viscosity, Ivan Puchades
Theses
A thermally actuated non-cantilever-beam micro-electro-mechanical viscosity sensor is presented. The proposed device is based on thermally induced vibrations of a silicon-based membrane and its damping due to the surrounding fluid. This vibration viscometer device utilizes thermal actuation through an in-situ resistive heater and piezoresistive sensing, both of which utilize CMOS compatible materials leading to an inexpensive and reliable system. Due to the nature of the actuation, thermal analysis was performed utilizing PN diodes embedded in the silicon membrane to monitor its temperature. This analysis determined the minimum heater voltage pulse amplitude and time in order to prevent heat loss to …

Fathers' Time Investments In Children: Do Sons Get More?, Kristin Mammen
Publications and Research
Evidence suggests that, from birth, fathers treat sons differently than daughters in the U.S., as well as in developing countries. Fathers' time investments in children are one channel through which differential treatment by gender may affect children's outcomes. This paper uses data from the 2003 American Time Use Survey to explore three questions about paternal time in married two-parent families: Does the gender composition of his children affect the amount of time a father spends with them? If so, does the gender of the individual child have an additional effect? And is a girl advantaged or disadvantaged by the presence …
