Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT) is a potentially curative therapy for a variety of hematologic diseases, but benefits, including graft-versus-tumor (GVT) activity are limited by graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD). Carcinoembryonic antigen related cell adhesion molecule 1 (Ceacam1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein found on epithelium, T cells, and many tumors. It regulates a variety of physiologic and pathological processes such as tumor biology, leukocyte activation, and energy homeostasis. Previous studies suggest that Ceacam1 negatively regulates inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease models.
METHODS: We studied Ceacam1 as a regulator of GVHD and GVT after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT) in mouse models. In …
Structures Of Poliovirus And Antibody Complexes Reveal Movements Of The Capsid Protein Vp1 During Cell Entry, Jun Lin
Theses and Dissertations
In the infection process, native poliovirus (160S) first converts to a cell-entry intermediate (135S) particle, which causes the externalization of capsid proteins VP4 and the N-terminus of VP1 (residues 1-53). The externalization of these entities is followed by release of the RNA genome, leaving an empty (80S) particle. Three antibodies were utilized to track the location of VP1 residues in different states of poliovirus by cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM). "P1" antibody binds to N-terminal residues 24-40 of VP1. Three-dimensional reconstruction of 135S-P1 showed that P1 binds to a prominent capsid peak known as the "propeller tip". In contrast, our initial …
Examining The Mediating Factors Between Religiosity And Pornography Use In Adolescents, Michael A. Steelman
Examining The Mediating Factors Between Religiosity And Pornography Use In Adolescents, Michael A. Steelman
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine relations between adolescent religiosity and pornography use, and the roles of self-regulation, attitudes towards pornography, and social control as mediators of these relations. It was hypothesized that religiosity would protect adolescents from exposure to pornography by increasing their self-regulation capacity, their conservative attitudes about pornography, and their perceived social norms regarding pornography. The sample consisted of 419 adolescents (ages 15 - 18 years; M age = 15.68, SD = .98; 56% male) recruited online from across the U.S. Participants completed an online survey. All variables were bivariately associated as expected. Path models …

Reproductive Success And Soil Seed Bank Characteristics Of Astragalus Ampullarioides And A. Holmgreniorum (Fabaceae): Two Rare Endemics Of Southwestern Utah, Allyson B. Searle
Theses and Dissertations
Astragalus ampullarioides and A. holmgreniorum are two rare endemics of southwestern Utah. Over two consecutive field seasons (2009-2010) we examined pre-emergent reproductive success, based on F/F and S/O ratios, from populations of both Astragalus ampullarioides and A. holmgreniorum, estimated the density of the soil seed bank of A. holmgreniorum as a measure of potential post-emergent reproductive success, and estimated seed persistence within the soil seed bank. Fruit/flower (F/F) ratios and seed/ovule (S/O) ratios varied significantly between populations and among years in both species, and showed low reproductive output in both taxa. In Astragalus ampullarioides F/F and S/O were 0.06±0.01 …

Our understanding of the molecular, genetic basis of adaptations and phenotypic differentiation among individuals will advance quickly thanks to new molecular techniques. This understanding is crucial given that accelerating environmental change and human population growth are increasingly threatening natural populations of fish and wildlife as well as increasing demands for agricultural production in domesticated species. This makes it urgent in many wild and domestic species to investigate the genetic basis of fitness, adaptation, and disease resistance [1], and to discover adaptive genes and speciation genes, i.e., the "loci of evolution" [2].

Laser Irradiation Of Metal Nanoparticle/Polymer Composite Materials For Chemical And Physical Transformations, Qun Huo, Hui-Chuan Cheng, Jianhua Zou
UCF Patents
A metal nanoparticle supported on or dispersed in a polymer is irradiated with photons from a laser source to address the nanoparticles. The polymer is transmissive to the photons and addressed nanoparticles transform the energy of the photon to heat which is transferred to a material in the vicinity of the nanoparticle. The locally heated material undergoes a physical or chemical transformation upon heating. The transformed material can be a material in the proximity of the metal nanoparticle supported polymer or metal nanoparticle/polymer composite. In this manner thermally induced physical or chemical transformations can be carried out in very small …

We investigated questions about the ability of broad silvicultural strategies to achieve multiple objectives (reduce disturbance losses, maintain the abundance of preferred species, mitigate fragmentation and loss of age-class diversity, and sequester aboveground carbon) under future climate conditions in Siberia. We conducted a factorial experiment using the LANDIS-II landscape disturbance and succession model. Treatments included varying the size and amount of areas cut and the cutting method (selective or clearcut). Simultaneously, the model simulated natural disturbances (fire, wind, insect out-breaks) and forest succession under projected future climate conditions as predicted by an ensemble of global circulation models. The cutting method …

Centinela: A Human Activity Recognition System Based On Acceleration And Vital Sign Data, Óscar D. Lara, Alfredo J. Perez, Miguel A. Labrador, José D. Posada
Computer Science Faculty Publications
This paper presents Centinela, a system that combines acceleration data with vital signs to achieve highly accurate activity recognition. Centinela recognizes five activities: walking, running, sitting, ascending, and descending. The system includes a portable and unobtrusive real-time data collection platform, which only requires a single sensing device and a mobile phone. To extract features, both statistical and structural detectors are applied, and two new features are proposed to discriminate among activities during periods of vital sign stabilization. After evaluating eight different classifiers and three different time window sizes, our results show that Centinela achieves up to 95.7% overall accuracy, which …
Dismissed With Prejudice: Gender Inequality In The Utah Legal Market, Collin Read Flake
Dismissed With Prejudice: Gender Inequality In The Utah Legal Market, Collin Read Flake
Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing feminization of the legal profession in the United States over the last half century, past research has documented the prevalence and transformation of gender inequality in law firms. However, relatively little is known about gender inequality in small, conservative legal markets like Utah. This thesis examines data from the 2008-2009 Utah Attorney Advancement and Retention Survey. The analyses indicate that relative to their male colleagues, women earned less in 2007 and are less likely to procure higher quality job assignments than their peers. The most promising explanations for these disparities include employment sector, gender and motherhood statuses, …
Science Instructors' Views Of Science And Nature Of Science, Mehmet Karakas
Science Instructors' Views Of Science And Nature Of Science, Mehmet Karakas
The Qualitative Report
This qualitative study examined how college science faculty who teach introductory level undergraduate science courses including the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, and earth science, understand and define science and nature of science (NOS). Participants were seventeen science instructors from five different institutions in the northeastern U.S. and all of them were interviewed. Consistent with previous research, the findings revealed that the participants in this study held sophisticated and complex conceptions of NOS. In some instances their views were in line with the views promoted by science philosophers, and in other instances their views were more mixed and naive. Findings …
Doctoral Students' Conceptions Of Research, Rod Pitcher
Doctoral Students' Conceptions Of Research, Rod Pitcher
The Qualitative Report
In this paper I report a study of the conceptions of research held by a sample of doctoral students at an Australian research-intensive university. I take a unique approach by using metaphor analysis to study the students' conceptions. The students in this study were recruited for an on-line survey in which they answered questions relating to their conceptions of research. I arrived at four categories that I have labelled research is explorative, research is constructive, research is spatial, and research is organic.
A Revolutionary Collage Of Same Sex Attraction Stories, Marcela Polanco
A Revolutionary Collage Of Same Sex Attraction Stories, Marcela Polanco
The Qualitative Report
Tony E. Adams' (2011) book presents what could be considered a revolutionary, humanizing understanding of same-sex attraction. This is accomplished by providing a relational understanding of "the closet" and experiences of coming into, living in, and coming out of the closet. It is a production of significant social relevance, denouncing the marginalizing effects of the domains of heteronormativity. While highly scholarly, his evocative storytelling makes this book accessible to an interested reader regardless of his or her degree or area of specialization.
Modifying The Body: Canadian Men's Perspectives On Appearance And Cosmetic Surgery, Rosemary Ricciardelli, Philip White
Modifying The Body: Canadian Men's Perspectives On Appearance And Cosmetic Surgery, Rosemary Ricciardelli, Philip White
The Qualitative Report
In postmodern scholarship there has been a temporal shift to thinking of the body as malleable rather than fixed, which has opened space for the remaking of the self via the remaking of the body (Featherstone, 1991; Giddens, 1991). Among men, this process is thought to interact with shifting understandings of masculinity. In this study, 14 interviews were conducted to investigate experiences of masculinity, physical appearance and cosmetic surgery among Canadian men who had undergone or were contemplating cosmetic surgery. Responses suggest that bodily presentations and experiences of masculinity continue to influence how people feel about themselves and their perspective …

Gene Set Analysis For Longitudinal Gene Expression Data, Ke Zhang, Haiyan Wang, Arne C. Bathke, Solomon W. Harrar, Hans-Peter Piepho, Youping Deng
Statistics Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Gene set analysis (GSA) has become a successful tool to interpret gene expression profiles in terms of biological functions, molecular pathways, or genomic locations. GSA performs statistical tests for independent microarray samples at the level of gene sets rather than individual genes. Nowadays, an increasing number of microarray studies are conducted to explore the dynamic changes of gene expression in a variety of species and biological scenarios. In these longitudinal studies, gene expression is repeatedly measured over time such that a GSA needs to take into account the within-gene correlations in addition to possible between-gene correlations.
RESULTS: We provide …

Experimental Protocols For And Studies Of The Effects Of Surface Passivation And Water Isotopes On The Gliding Speed Of Microtubules Propelled By Kinesin-1, Roger Maloney
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
This dissertation explores how the kinesin-1 and microtubule system is affected by surface passivation and water isotopes. Surface passivation was found to affect the gliding speed that microtubules exhibit in the gliding motility assay and the lengths of microtubules supported by the passivation. It was also found that gliding speeds of microtubules were very sensitive to temperature changes. Studies changing the water isotope were a first attempt to investigate if changing the solvent changed the osmotic pressure of the solution kinesin and microtubules were in. No osmotic pressure changes were observed, however, the experiments using different isotopes of water did …
Can The Use Of Clickers Or Continuous Assessment Motivate Critical Thinking? A Case Study Based On Corporate Finance Students, Lucia Morales
Can The Use Of Clickers Or Continuous Assessment Motivate Critical Thinking? A Case Study Based On Corporate Finance Students, Lucia Morales
Higher Learning Research Communications
This study explores the use of clickers as a tool to support, encourage and motivate critical thinking in higher education students. A case study was carried out with a cohort of undergraduate students undertaking the BSc. in Accounting and Finance during the academic year 2009/10, were corporate finance was a major component. Since the students in this sample had previously demonstrated passivity during their corporate finance classes, it was proposed that clickers would help motivate them to participate during face to face sessions. Previous research on the use of clickers shows evidence that this tool has a positive effect on …
Analysis Of The Organization And Dynamics Of Proteins In Cell Membranes, Flor Aurelia Espinoza Hidalgo
Analysis Of The Organization And Dynamics Of Proteins In Cell Membranes, Flor Aurelia Espinoza Hidalgo
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Cells communicate with the outside world through membrane receptors that recognize one of many possible stimuli (hormones, antibodies, peptides) in the extracellular environment and translate this information to intracellular responses. Stimulation of the cells produces changes in the organization and dynamics of the receptors that are critical to signal transduction. Problems in signaling networks are important in understanding many diseases including cancer, allergy and asthma, so there is great interest in understanding these changes. Biologists in the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling Center (STMC) have generated a large amount of data about the high affinity receptor FceRI, that is found …
Cooperative Self-Propulsion Of Active And Passive Rotors, Yaouen Fily, Aparna Baskaran, M. Cristina Marchetti
Cooperative Self-Propulsion Of Active And Passive Rotors, Yaouen Fily, Aparna Baskaran, M. Cristina Marchetti
Physics - All Scholarship
Using minimal models for low Reynolds number passive and active rotors in a fluid, we characterize the hydrodynamic interactions among rotors and the resulting dynamics of a pair of interacting rotors. This allows us to treat in a common framework passive or externally driven rotors, such as magnetic colloids driven by a rotating magnetic field, and active or internally driven rotors, such as sperm cells confined at boundaries. The hydrodynamic interaction of passive rotors contains an azimuthal component 1/r2 to dipolar order that can yield the recently discovered “cooperative self-propulsion” of a pair of rotors of opposite vorticity. While this …
Selective Epitaxial Growth Techniques To Integrate High-Quality Germanium On Silicon, Darin Leonhardt
Selective Epitaxial Growth Techniques To Integrate High-Quality Germanium On Silicon, Darin Leonhardt
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
High-quality Ge-on-Si heterostructures have been actively pursued for many advanced applications, including near-infrared photodetectors, high-mobility field effect transistors, and virtual substrates for integrating III-V multijunction solar cells. However, growing epitaxial Ge on Si poses many engineering challenges, ranging from lattice mismatch, to thermal expansion coefficient mismatch, to non-planar morphological evolution. The lattice mismatch between Ge and Si often leads to a high density of threading dislocations. These dislocations, if not reduced, propagate through the subsequently grown GaAs layer, deteriorating its quality. To overcome these engineering challenges, we have developed three different approaches based on molecular beam epitaxy to significantly reduce, …

This research introduces the use of bucky' papers based on SWNTs as anode electrode materials for the oxidation of NADH and L-Malate oxidation by poly(methylengreen) and malate dehydrogenase respectively. SWNTs were used to create an electrode design consisting of high surface area-hierarchically ordered carbon nanomaterials with controlled surface chemistry. Additionally, this research introduces new cathodes designs based on buckeye and toray papers for air-breathing and liquid electrolyte modes. Buckeye and 0.11mm-thick toray papers are used to design the air-breathing cathode by immobilization of Laccase using a non-covalent linking agent. The liquid electrolyte cathode, designed to be applied in implantable devices, …
Trends And Interannual Variability In Snowpack And Spring Season Hydroclimatology In The Southwestern United States, Sarah J. Keller
Trends And Interannual Variability In Snowpack And Spring Season Hydroclimatology In The Southwestern United States, Sarah J. Keller
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
By virtue of its relatively low latitude and already marginal snowpack, especially in Arizona and much of New Mexico, the southwestern U.S. is a compelling location in which to study how temperature and seasonal snowpack interact to affect spring hydroclimatology. Understanding snowpack-mediated spring soil moisture and how observed, current changes in the regional climate affect the snowpack-soil moisture relationship will provide important insights into the current and future hydrology of the southwestern U.S. In this study, we use newly available data from the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS-2) Phase 2, run with the Mosaic land surface model, to …

Probing Morphology-Dependent Aggregation And Photocurrent Generation In Polymer/Fullerene Photovoltaic Devices, Yongqian Gao
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
In this dissertation, new spectroscopic and electrical imaging approaches were developed to map morphology-dependent aggregation properties of polymer chains in model solar cell devices. These techniques reveal new correlations between local structure and material performance on sub-micron size scales which are not accessible by other techniques. Resonance Raman spectroscopic imaging was developed as a physical probe to identify and spatially map morphology-dependent variations of intra- and interchain interactions and order in poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) photovoltaic blend thin films. The C=C band of P3HT backbone was decomposed into aggregated and unaggregated component contribution at ~1450 cm …
