Invertebrate Fossils From Cave Sediments: A New Proxy For Pre-Quaternary Paleoenvironments, O. T. Moldovan, A. Mihevc, L. Miko

KIP Articles

Five samples of clastic sediments from interior cave facies taken in three Slovenian relic caves (Trhlovca, Račiška pečina, and a cave in Črnotiče Quarry, Classical Karst, SW Slovenia) provided invertebrate fossil remains. Most of them belong to Oribatida but sparse individuals of Cladocera and insects were also identified. They represent the first pre-Quaternary invertebrate fossils found in sediments of continental temperate climate. The Pliocene/Pleistocene age of the sediments was determined by paleomagnetic dating chronologically calibrated by micromammal biostratigraphy. Invertebrate fossils could be validated as new proxy for the study of cave sediments due to their suitability for ecological and paleogeographic …

An Invasive Species Reduces Aquatic Insect Flux To Terrestrial Food Webs, Steven S. Merkley Jul 2011

An Invasive Species Reduces Aquatic Insect Flux To Terrestrial Food Webs, Steven S. Merkley

Theses and Dissertations

Although it is well documented how introduced species can negatively affect native species, we only poorly understand how they may alter ecosystem functions. We investigated how an invasive fish affected the flux of aquatic insects to terrestrial food webs using mesocosms in a desert spring ecosystem. We compared aquatic insect emergence between alternative community states with monocultures and polycultures of two native species of fish, least chub (Iotichthys phlegethontis) and Utah chub (Gila atraria) plus, introduced western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). We tested three hypotheses: (1) aquatic insect biomass will be greater than terrestrial insect …

Comics As Criticism: Graphic Novel Adaptations As Interpretive Discourse, Esther Bendit Saltzman Jul 2011

Comics As Criticism: Graphic Novel Adaptations As Interpretive Discourse, Esther Bendit Saltzman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Graphic novel adaptations of classic texts are not fully recognized for their potential contributions to scholarship. This thesis argues that a graphic novel adaptation of classic literature can function as literary criticism of its source while allowing for further interpretation. Case studies include three classic texts with their corrsponding graphic novel adaptations: Shakespeare's Macbeth with Shakespeare's Macbeth: the Manga Edition, and Classical Comics' Macbeth: the Graphic Novel; Shelley's Frankenstein with Classical Comics' Frankenstein: the Graphic Novel; and Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray with adaptations by Thomas and Fiumara and by Edginton and Culbard. Findings demonstrate complex ways in which …

Toxic Chemicals Transported By Rail And Public Health Safety Using Gis In Montgomery County, Ohio, Jason Lipiec

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Hazardous chemicals transported by rail pass directly through urban cities and pose a safety and health threat to the community. Some of these chemicals can be in large quantities, extremely toxic, devastating to the environment and have the potential to cause mass casualties and death. Thousands of people could be in harm’s way. While there is always the possibility for accidental chemical release, they also have the potential to be used in acts of sabotage and terrorism. Evaluation of the rail line in Montgomery County, Ohio using standards in the 2008 Emergency Response Guidebook using geographic information systems (GIS) at …

Comparison Of Clustered Rdf Data Stores, Venkata Patchigolla

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Storing data in RDF format helps in simpler data interchange among different researchers compared to present approaches. There has been tremendous increase in the applications that use RDF data. The nature of RDF data is such that it tends to increase explosively. This makes it necessary to consider the time for retrieval and scalability of data while selecting a suitable RDF data store for developing applications. The research concentrates on comparing BigOWLIM. Bigdata, 4store and Virtuoso RDF stores on basis of their scalability and performance of storing and retrieving cancer proteomics and mass spectrometry data using SPARQL queries. In this …

Receptor Influences In Girk Current Activation And Desensitization, Gyu Park Jul 2011

Receptor Influences In Girk Current Activation And Desensitization, Gyu Park

Theses and Dissertations

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are seven-transmembrane domain receptors that sense extracellular signal and activate intracellular signaling pathways. Metabotropic glutamate receptor 2 (mGluR2) is one of the GPCRs coupled to Gi/o proteins whose Gβγ subunits stimulate G protein-gated inwardly rectifying K+ channels (GIRKs). Previous experiments demonstrated that in planar lipid bilayer both active forms of G proteins [Gα (GTPγS-stimulated) and Gβγ subunits] were required to activate GIRK channels in the absence of the receptor, but surprisingly, the Gβγ subunit alone could activate GIRK channel in the presence of GPCR. Currently, it is not clear whether GPCRs play a role beyond catalyzing …

African American ethnicity is an independent risk factor for exaggerated oxidative stress, which is related to inflammation, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Recently, we reported that in vitro oxidative stress and inflammation levels differ between African American and Caucasian human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), African American HUVECs having higher levels of both. However, it remains to be shown whether the cells would respond differently to external stimuli.

Rate Changes In Risky Behavior & The Role Of Sibling Influence, Julian Bajczyk

Theses and Dissertations

This study is based on research performed in 2006 by Laura Argys, Daniel Rees, Susan Averett, and Benjama Witoonchart. The 2006 study investigated relationship between the birth order and an adolescent's likelihood of engaging in certain risky behaviors. For the purpose of this study these behaviors include things like drug use, sexual activity and violent or antisocial offenses. The initial study found a trend implicating that adolescents with older siblings more likely to engage in certain risky behaviors than adolescents who did not have older siblings (eldest and only children). The Argys, et al. study used data collected from the …

Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

Cancer cells show a broad spectrum of bioenergetic states, with some cells using aerobic glycolysis while others rely on oxidative phosphorylation as their main source of energy. In addition, there is mounting evidence that metabolic coupling occurs in aggressive tumors, between epithelial cancer cells and the stromal compartment, and between well-oxygenated and hypoxic compartments. We recently showed that oxidative stress in the tumor stroma, due to aerobic glycolysis and mitochondrial dysfunction, is important for cancer cell mutagenesis and tumor progression. More specifically , increased autophagy/mitophagy in the tumor stroma drives a form of parasitic epithelial-stromal metabolic coupling. These findings explain …

Changes In Life History Within An Individual's Lifetime, Eric J. Billman Jul 2011

Changes In Life History Within An Individual's Lifetime, Eric J. Billman

Theses and Dissertations

A central goal of life history theory is to understand the selective factors that generate the diversity of reproductive patterns observed in nature. Within lifetime changes in reproductive investment will determine an organism's fitness; however, this area of life history theory has received less attention than comparisons among population that characterize life history traits as a single population mean. Reproductive allocation can be affected by multiple cues; the integration of these cues across an organism's lifetime generates the diversity in life history strategies observed in nature. Life history studies should examine the interacting effects of multiple cues on life history …

Assembly Of Lamina-Specific Neuronal Connections By Slit Bound To Type Iv Collagen, Tong Xiao, Wendy Staub, Estuardo Robles, Nathan J. Gosse, Gregory J. Cole, Herwig Baier

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

The mechanisms that generate specific neuronal connections in the brain are under intense investigation. In zebrafish, retinal ganglion cells project their axons into at least six layers within the neuropil of the midbrain tectum. Each axon elaborates a single, planar arbor in one of the target layers and forms synapses onto the dendrites of tectal neurons. We show that the laminar specificity of retinotectal connections does not depend on self-sorting interactions among RGC axons. Rather, tectum-derived Slit1, signaling through axonal Robo2, guides neurites to their target layer. Genetic and biochemical studies indicate that Slit binds to Dragnet (Col4a5), a type …

Growth Of Age-0 Atlantic Menhaden (Brevoortia Tyrannus) In Two Tidal Freshwater Tributaries Of Chesapeake Bay, Peter M. Sturke Jul 2011

Growth Of Age-0 Atlantic Menhaden (Brevoortia Tyrannus) In Two Tidal Freshwater Tributaries Of Chesapeake Bay, Peter M. Sturke

Theses and Dissertations

Few studies have described growth rates of age-0 Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus). Growth rates from tidal freshwater habitats of the Mattaponi and James Rivers, Virginia in 2009 were described and compared using otolith microstructural analyses. Larval tidal freshwater growth rates were significantly faster in the culturally eutrophic James River when compared to those collected from the Mattaponi River (p-value < 0.001). Elevated primary production within tidal freshwater habitats promotes favorable conditions for larval Atlantic menhaden growth. No differences between river habitats for juvenile growth rates were evident. Comparisons of age-0 growth rates to higher salinity habitats indicate that tidal freshwater habitats should be considered essential habitat for age-0 Atlantic menhaden.

Spinal Implant With Customized And Non-Linear Stiffness, Eric Ray Dodgen Jul 2011

Spinal Implant With Customized And Non-Linear Stiffness, Eric Ray Dodgen

Theses and Dissertations

There is a need for spinal implants that have nonlinear stiffness to provide stabilization if the spine loses stiffness through injury, degeneration, or surgery. There is also a need for spinal implants to be customizable for individual needs, and to be small enough to be unobtrusive once implanted. Past and ongoing work that defines the effects of degeneration on the torque rotation curve of a functional spinal unit (FSU) were used to produce a spinal implant which could meet these requirements. This thesis proposes contact-aided inserts to be used with the FlexSuRe™ spinal implant to create a nonlinear stiffness. Moreover, …

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Mediator complex transmits activation signals from DNA bound transcription factors to the core transcription machinery. Genome wide localization studies have demonstrated that Mediator occupancy not only correlates with high levels of transcription, but that the complex also is present at transcriptionally silenced locations. We provide evidence that Mediator localization is guided by an interaction with histone tails, and that this interaction is regulated by their post-translational modifications. A quantitative, high-density genetic interaction map revealed links between Mediator components and factors affecting chromatin structure, especially histone deacetylases. Peptide binding assays demonstrated that pure wild-type Mediator forms stable complexes with the …

Background: Malaria mosquitoes spend a considerable part of their life in the aquatic stage, rendering them vulnerable to interventions directed to aquatic habitats. Recent successes of mosquito larval control have been reported using environmental and biological tools. Here, we report the effects of shading by plants and biological control agents on the development and survival of anopheline and culicine mosquito larvae in man-made natural habitats in western Kenya. Trials consisted of environmental manipulation using locally available plants, the introduction of predatory fish and/or the use of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) in various combinations. Results: Man-made habitats provided with shade …

Hemoptysis As A Presenting Symptom For Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer, Toshimasa Okabe, Md, Leigh Van Vranken, Msiii, Darren N. Seril, Md

The Medicine Forum

Introduction

Approximately 32,000 pancreatic neoplasms are diagnosed in theUnited States annually. Currently, carcinoma of the pancreas isthe fourth most common cause of cancer death in both menand women in this country, after cancers of the lung, breast/prostate, and colon. The most common presenting symptomsof pancreatic cancers are epigastric pain, obstructive jaundice, and weight loss. However, since pancreatic cancer is frequentlymetastatic when diagnosed, it may uncommonly present withfindings characteristic of the site of spread.
