Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Over 209,000 individuals are incarcerated in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with the majority of offenders incarcerated for drug-related offenses. Research demonstrates an increased level of aggressive behaviors and substance use for offenders when compared to community samples. However, the impact of aggressive personality traits on substance use in offenders has not previously been examined. The study used archival data gathered from 356 male and female offenders housed in institutions throughout the Federal Bureau of Prisons system. The Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire-ShortForm and the Alcohol and Drug Problems scales of the Personality Assessment Inventory were used to assess the relationship between …

Simulation Of Abnormal/Normal Brain States Using The Kiv Model, Mark H. Myers Jul 2011

Simulation Of Abnormal/Normal Brain States Using The Kiv Model, Mark H. Myers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Recent studies have focused on the phenomena of abnormal electrical brain activity which may transition into a debilitating seizure state through the entrainment of large populations of neurons.Starting from the initial epileptogenisis of a small population of abnormally firing neurons, to the mobilization of mesoscopic neuron populations behaving in a synchronous manner, a model has been formulated that captures the initial epileptogenisis to the semi-periodic entrainment of distant neuron populations. The normal non-linear dynamic signal captured through EEG, moves into a semi-periodic state, which can be quantified as the seizure state.Capturing the asynchronous/synchronous behavior of the normal/pathological brain state will be …

Impact Of Alternative Range Management Systems On Grasslands In The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, Luis E. Ramirez Jul 2011

Impact Of Alternative Range Management Systems On Grasslands In The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, Luis E. Ramirez

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Land management strategies can directly and indirectly affect plant assemblages and their behavior. Little research has been performed in south central Nebraska to quantify the effect of fire and grazing interactions on species composition, vegetation structure, forage quality, and potential cost associated with land management.

I evaluate the effect of season-long continuous, patch-burning, and rotational grazing approaches on vegetation and ranching costs to determine their value as conservation tools. This study includes data collected between 2007 and 2009 from grasslands in south central Nebraska. I found that land management influence plant assemblages by shifting communities when grazing and/or fire are …

Complexity, Coordination, And Health: Avoiding Pitfalls And Erroneous Interpretations In Fractal Analyses, Vivien Marmelat, Didier Delignières Jul 2011

Complexity, Coordination, And Health: Avoiding Pitfalls And Erroneous Interpretations In Fractal Analyses, Vivien Marmelat, Didier Delignières

Journal Articles

Background and Objective. The analysis of fractal fluctuation has become very popular because of the close relationships between health, adaptability, and long-range correlations. 1/f noise is considered a “magical” threshold, characterizing optimal functioning, and a decrease or conversely and increase of serial correlations, with respect to 1/f noise, is supposed to sign a kind of disadaptation of the system. Empirical results, however, should be interpreted with caution. In experimental series, serial correlations often present a complex pattern, resulting from the combination of long-range and short-term correlated processes. We show, in the present paper, that an increase in serial correlations …

Expression Profiling And Functional Validation Of Micrornas Involved In Schizophrenia And Bipolar Disorder, Albert H. Kim

Theses and Dissertations

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a family of small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at both the mRNA and protein levels. MiRNAs have been shown to affect neuronal differentiation, synaptosomal complex localization and synapse plasticity, all functions thought to be disrupted in schizophrenia. We investigated the expression of 667 miRNAs (miRBase v.13) in the prefrontal cortex of individuals with schizophrenia (SZ, N = 35) and bipolar disorder (BP, N =35) using a real-time PCR-based Taqman Low Density Array (TLDA). After extensive QC steps, 441 miRNAs were included in the final analyses. At a FDR of 10%, 22 miRNAs were identified as …

Natural Disasters And Older Adults: The Social Construction Of Disaster Planning, Elizabeth Fugate-Whitlock

Theses and Dissertations

Examining older adults’ experiences with and response toward hurricanes within the context of the community of residence is key to both understanding their experiences and planning for future hurricanes. Specific to this research, the objective was to understand the current social network of older adults, or who provides care for whom under what circumstances, using the social constructionist perspective. Grounded theory combined with action research was the theoretical orientation guiding the study. Sources of data included the collection of household disaster plans, semi-structured interviews with older adult residents of housing authority neighborhoods, semi-structured interviews with community planners, and observation of …

Pulp And Paper Wastewater Color Removal, Parsa Pezeshk Jul 2011

Pulp And Paper Wastewater Color Removal, Parsa Pezeshk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Pulp and paper industries generate highly-colored wastewaters, the color of which is not removed by conventional biological treatment. As a result, the persistent color of the wastewater can potentially disrupt the aesthetic appearance of the recieving stream as well as releasing potentially toxic compounds to the environment. Coagulation and flocculation is a chemical treatment practiced to remove color from pulp and paper mill wastewaters. The main focus of this work was to study the color removal efficiency of coagulation/flocculation treatment on a specialty pulp and paper mill wastewater located in the State of Tennessee. In this regard, the effect of …

Design And Preliminary Investigation Of Crosslinked Chitosan Sponges For Tailorable Drug Delivery And Infection Control, Ashley Cox Parker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Musculoskeletal wound infections can be difficult to treat, often resulting in multiple surgeries and increased costs, and can be complicated by antibiotic resistant bacteria. The aim of this study was to use genipin, alone or with poly(n-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), to crosslink chitosan sponges for a tailorable, degradable local drug delivery system to treat known musculoskeletal pathogens. Lyophilized uncrosslinked, genipin crosslinked, and PNIPAM/ genipin crosslinked chitosan sponges were evaluated in vitro for degradation, antibiotic uptake, elution, biologic activity, and biocompatibility. Crosslinked chitosan sponges exhibited decreased degradation and increased antibiotic uptake and elution. PNIPAM/genipin crosslinked sponges had the highest and prolonged release of …

Anxiety-Like Behavior In C57bl/6j And Dba/2j Mice: Pharmacological Characterization Of The Elevated Zero Maze And The Influence Of Age-Related Differences On Behavior, Timothy James Flanigan Jul 2011

Anxiety-Like Behavior In C57bl/6j And Dba/2j Mice: Pharmacological Characterization Of The Elevated Zero Maze And The Influence Of Age-Related Differences On Behavior, Timothy James Flanigan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Anxiety disorders affect a significant proportion of the population and can be debilitating in some circumstances. The exact etiology of these disorders remains to be determined and animal models are an important part of that effort. The elevated zero maze, a behavioral measure of anxiety, was introduced as an alternative to the popular elevated plus maze. While the elevated zero maze has been pharmacologically validated in rats, the available data in mice is more limited. Similarly, the data available on anxiety-like behavior in adolescent mice lacks breadth despite considerable evidence suggesting that developmental processes during this period play a role …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Tryptophan metabolites anthranilic acid (AA) and 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3-OHAA) have been implicated in the etiology of bladder cancer. Metal-mediated activation of these compounds into mutagens was tested using a plasmid relaxation assay at increasing concentrations of copper (Cu (II) at 5 µM-20 µM in the presence of plasmid pSP-72. One hundred µM 3-OHAA induced plasmid relaxation in the presence of metal cofactor Cu (II) at a concentration as low as 5 µM. The Cu (II) mediated mutagenic activation of 3-OHAA was further investigated using Ames Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay with reactive oxygen species (ROS) sensitive tester strain Salmonella TA102. A significant …

Analysis Of Microarray Data With Directed Graphs, Nam Sy Vo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis studies various problems of analyzing microarray data with multiple treatments and multiple replicates using directed graphs. We start from a method that represents gene response as transitive directed acyclic graphs to extract meaningful information from microarray data (Phan et al., 2009). To extend this work, we simulate expressions of genes based on real data and make predictions about potential patterns of genes and their properties. From this, we predict whether such potential patterns are certain if given more replicates. Next, we used fold information which was not used in prior work to cluster genes share the same patterns …

Structural Basis For Thermal Stability Of Thermophilic Trmd Proteins, Jamar Uzzell

Theses and Dissertations

Thermal stability of theG37 tRNA methyltransferase proteins from Thermotoga maritima and Aquifex aeolicus have been compared using Differential Scanning Calorimetry. It was shown that the Thermotoga protein is remarkably stable and is denatured at temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Centigrade. The Aquifex aeolicus protein was less stable, denaturing broadly at temperatures between 55oC and 100oC. In contrast, the mesophilic E. coli protein was completely denatured at 55oC. Enzymatic activity of the proteins was measured at various temperatures. Both the Thermotoga and Aquifex enzymes are active at ambient temperatures, and display a significant decrease in activity when the temperature is …

Analysis Of The Role Of Outer Surface Protein C (Ospc) In Borrelia Burgdorferi Pathogenesis, Delacy Rhodes

Theses and Dissertations

Lyme disease is an emerging infection that is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. These bacteria exist in nature through an enzootic life cycle involving Ixodes ticks and various reservoir hosts. One way that this bacterium adapts to the different hosts in the enzootic cycle is through the expression of outer surface protein C (OspC). OspC is a surface exposed lipoprotein encoded on circular plasmid 26 that forms homodimers on the bacterial surface and has distinct conserved and variable portions of sequence. When ospC is deleted, the spirochetes are unable to cause mammalian infection although the mechanism of …

Active Jamming: Self-Propelled Soft Particles At High Density, Silke Henkes, Yaouen Fily, M. Christina Marchetti

Physics - All Scholarship

We study numerically the phases and dynamics of a dense collection of self-propelled particles with soft repulsive interactions in two dimensions. The model is motivated by recent in vitro experiments on confluent monolayers of migratory epithelial and endothelial cells. The phase diagram exhibits a liquid phase with giant number fluctuations at low packing fraction and high self-propulsion speed and a jammed phase at high packing fraction and low self-propulsion speed. The dynamics of the jammed phase is controlled by the low frequency modes of the jammed packing.
