Effects Of Non-Planar Distortions In Porphyrin Compounds On Their Properties And Functionality, Raid Haddad
Effects Of Non-Planar Distortions In Porphyrin Compounds On Their Properties And Functionality, Raid Haddad
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Porphyrins and related compounds are ubiquitous in nature, performing diverse functions including solar energy transduction, electron transport, molecular transport and storage, and catalysis. Due to their unique photophysical and chemical properties, they are excellent candidates for application as photosensitizers, catalysts, photocatalysts, molecular electronics and opto-electronics. Several properties of porphyrins are sensitive to small variations in their structure, and this dissertation investigates the effects of out-of-plane distortions of the macrocycle on optical properties, reactivity to axial ligands, and substituent rotation. The structure-functions relationships are examined using molecular simulations, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, resonance Raman spectroscopy, and normal-coordinate structural decomposition (NSD) analysis of …
Use Of Fluorescent Micropsheres To Measure Coronary Flow Reserve In Rat Animal Model, Riddhi Harsh Shah
Use Of Fluorescent Micropsheres To Measure Coronary Flow Reserve In Rat Animal Model, Riddhi Harsh Shah
Theses
Heart attacks result from reduced or blocked blood flow through major coronary arteries, resulting in permanent damage to heart muscle. Coronary blood flow (CBF) is thus important to measure in experimental animal models of heart disease. A standard method to measure CBF uses tracer microspheres (Ø = 15 µm) injected into the left ventricle that flow through coronary arteries but cannot pass through capillaries and so become trapped in heart muscle. Previously, radioactive or colored microspheres have quantified the number of tracers trapped in the muscle. Fluorescent microspheres offer a more recent and more sensitive measurement mode. However, fluorescent microspheres …

Gc-Content Normalization For Rna-Seq Data, Davide Risso, Katja Schwartz, Gavin Sherlock, Sandrine Dudoit
Gc-Content Normalization For Rna-Seq Data, Davide Risso, Katja Schwartz, Gavin Sherlock, Sandrine Dudoit
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Background: Transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) has become the assay of choice for high-throughput studies of gene expression. However, as is the case with microarrays, major technology-related artifacts and biases affect the resulting expression measures. Normalization is therefore essential to ensure accurate inference of expression levels and subsequent analyses thereof.
Results: We focus on biases related to GC-content and demonstrate the existence of strong sample-specific GC-content effects on RNA-Seq read counts, which can substantially bias differential expression analysis. We propose three simple within-lane gene-level GC-content normalization approaches and assess their performance on two different RNA-Seq datasets, involving different species and experimental designs. …

The Valles Caldera: Recreationists' Perspectives On Access And Management, Matt Gagnon
Geography ETDs
With the public acquisition of Valles Caldera National Preserve in 2000, Congress granted management to a Board of Trustees, a unique experiment in public land management. Ten years into the experiment, the trust model has been failing to meet certain management objectives and is under pressure by outdoor recreationists to provide greater public access to this treasured piece of land in New Mexico. Pressure has become so great that the United States Senators from New Mexico have introduced legislation, the Valles Caldera National Preserve Management Act, which would transfer management to the National Park Service. To address this blossoming issue, …

Investigating Evidence Of High Frequency Glacial Eustacy In The Lower Mississippian (Tournasian) Lodgepole Formation Of Southwest Montana : Insights From Conodont Oxygen Isotopes, Zachary Wallace
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
This study focuses on high-frequency, subtidal-carbonate cycles (1-8 m thick) within the Woodhurst Member of the Lower Mississippian Lodgepole Formation of southwest Montana. We combined conodont-oxygen isotopes (δ18Oapatite¬) and carbonate-carbon isotopes (δ13Ccarb) with cyclostratigraphy of Woodhurst cycles to test the hypothesis that the cycles developed in response to glacial eustasy, evaluate the timing and initiation of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA), and to better understand the carbon budget in response to cycle formation. δ18Oapatite trends across targeted cycles support the hypothesis of glacial eustatic origins along with cooling surface seawater temperatures. High-resolution δ13Ccarb analysis of whole-rock limestones within eleven …
Applying Numerical Sediment Transport Models To Examine River Restoration Sustainablilty At The Rio Grande Nature Center, New Mexico, Kyle Shour
Civil Engineering ETDs
Much of the Middle Rio Grande has severely degraded since 1930 when flood control institution began (Scurlock 1998). Since that time, additional anthropogenic stressors have continued to cause the river to incise and narrow and have harmed the ecological health of the system. As a result, many different entities have developed restoration projects along the Middle Rio Grande. These projects are often localized, small scale features that promote native vegetation establishment and improve habitat for endangered species without removing flood protection measures. One such feature is the Rio Grande Nature Center (RGNC) Habitat Restoration project. The project consists of removing …
