Guidelines For Culturally Informed Interventions: Culture, Attributions And Continuity Of Care, Chung Mu Seo Sep 2011

Guidelines For Culturally Informed Interventions: Culture, Attributions And Continuity Of Care, Chung Mu Seo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although early detection can improve survival of breast and cervical cancer, U.S. Latinas are more likely to be diagnosed at later stages of cancer and have poorer survival rates compared to Anglo women. Poorer continuity of care and adherence to recommended screening are seen as contributing factors to this disparity. Existing interventions have tried to reduce human, system, and culture barriers. However, they lacked a systemic guidance in the process of identifying cultural factors and the pathways in which they affect the specific behavior of interest through psychological processes in a minority population. Guided by Betancourt’s integrative model of culture, …

Civic Attitude And Activity Of Loma Linda University Dental Graduates, Gregory W. Olson Sep 2011

Civic Attitude And Activity Of Loma Linda University Dental Graduates, Gregory W. Olson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Dentistry is regarded as a profession and granted certain privileges, such as self-regulation. Associated with this status are stated and implied responsibilities which are widely debated. In recent years, dental professionalism seems to be on the decline. Evidence cited includes access-to-care issues and decreased public trust in dentists. In response, academia and professional organizations have developed curricula and statements intended to bolster professionalism. Meanwhile little is known about practicing dentists’ attitudes or participation in health-related civic matters. Objectives: This study seeks to examine the importance Loma Linda University (LLU) dental graduates place on public roles, their reported participation in …

Lateralization Of Emotion, Reaction Time, And Skin Conductance Responsiveness, Kimberley Erin Rose Sep 2011

Lateralization Of Emotion, Reaction Time, And Skin Conductance Responsiveness, Kimberley Erin Rose

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Bilateral presentations of brief (250 ms), unmasked emotional and neutral stimuli were examined in two experiments with primarily female samples. Reaction time and accuracy data were used to measure perception of emotion and skin conductance response (SCR) was used to measure experience of emotion. Both words and pictures were used to account for hemispheric differences in language and visuospatial dominance. Response time was faster to emotional pictures than words. Reaction time and speeded accuracy data did not support right hemisphere hypothesis (RHH) or valence hypothesis (VH) in the expected manner. Data suggested emotion caused greater interference under speeded conditions in …

Effects Of Neurotrophic Factors On Osteoblast Growth And Differentiation, Colleen M. Moran Sep 2011

Effects Of Neurotrophic Factors On Osteoblast Growth And Differentiation, Colleen M. Moran

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Recent evidence suggests that bone metabolism may be influenced by the innervation of skeletal tissues. Innervation of skeletal tissues might directly influence bone volume by the release or secretion of osteogenic growth factors in the form of neuropeptides. These neuropeptides could act locally on osteoblasts to increase bone formation and/or mineralization. Since calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and Substance P (SP) are the most abundant neuropeptides present in sensory nerves in bone, the current studies were intended to test the hypothesis that these two neuropeptides may have direct effects on osteoblast growth, differentiation, and mineralization. Replicate cultures of murine calvarial osteoblasts …

Integrating The Development Of Children And Gestalt Therapy, Jennifer J. Thompson Sep 2011

Integrating The Development Of Children And Gestalt Therapy, Jennifer J. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

There are many theories that have contributed to what we know about the development of children; for instance, theoretical diversity supports the complexities of human nature. A child's developmental level will impact his ability to relate. Gestalt theory supports the child's phenomenological view by focusing on the here-and-now of what is happening in the therapeutic environment. Most of what a child will do is in response to a need or want. The child will work toward fulfilling that need. The child may develop maladaptive ways to fulfill his needs based on the environment in which he lives. Gestalt play therapy …

An Occupational-Based Experimental Study Of Collective Vs. Personal Efficacy To Encourage Sun Protective Behaviors In Head Start Preschool Teachers, Elizabeth A. Holzhauser Sep 2011

An Occupational-Based Experimental Study Of Collective Vs. Personal Efficacy To Encourage Sun Protective Behaviors In Head Start Preschool Teachers, Elizabeth A. Holzhauser

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in the United States. An analysis of literature shows that skin cancer can be partially mitigated through personal behavior changes (Glanz, Buller, & Saraiya; 2007, Canadian Centre of Occupational Health and Safety [CCOHS], 2010). Currently national sun-safety educational campaigns promote sun-protective behaviors to individuals who receive exposure due to their work environment (Task Force on Community Preventive Services, 2004). Preschool teachers employed with San Bernardino County Head Start are inadvertently exposed to sunlight during mandatory recess periods posing risks to their health.

Purpose. This study evaluated two instructional …

The Application Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy To Chronic Pain Management, Jacob S. Iwaszewski Sep 2011

The Application Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy To Chronic Pain Management, Jacob S. Iwaszewski

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pain affects more than 50 million Americans annually, costs over 150 billion dollars each year in healthcare and legal expenses, and results in decreased work productivity and missed work days (Ballantyne, 2006; Boll, Raczynski, & Leviton, 2004; Thom, 2004). It is estimated that chronic pain negatively impacts 15% to 33% of the US population (Bokarius et al., 2008). Third-wave acceptance-based therapies, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), have demonstrated significant improvements in mental health functioning for a variety of populations (Carmody & Baer, 2008; Cusens, Duggan, Thome, & Burch, 2010). DBT, one of the primary treatment modalities for Borderline Personality …

Glutamate dehydrogenase 1 (GLUD1) is a mitochondrial enzyme expressed in all tissues, including brain. Although this enzyme is expressed in glutamatergic pathways, its function as a regulator of glutamate neurotransmitter levels is still not well defined. In order to gain an understanding of the role of GLUD1 in the control of glutamate levels and synaptic release in mammalian brain, we generated transgenic (Tg) mice that over-express this enzyme in neurons of the central nervous system. The Tg mice have increased activity of GLUD, as well as elevated levels and increased synaptic and depolarization-induced release of glutamate. These mice suffer age-associated …

Substantial Equivalence Assessment Of Transgenic Corn Plants, Martina Garda Sep 2011

Substantial Equivalence Assessment Of Transgenic Corn Plants, Martina Garda

Student Theses and Dissertations

Transgenic crops are regulated until they are judged to be as safe as non-transgenic plants. To grow them without permits, they must attain regulatory approval. . A lot of data are needed to show "substantial equivalence" and safety . This work deals with corn lines that contain cellulase genes. We hypothesize that no difference exists between Genetically Engineered (GE) and non-Genetically Engineered (non-GE) corn seeds at the morphological, protein, and DNA levels, except for the protein expressed specifically from the corresponding gene. This research will address concerns in commercializing GE crops, such as those containing a gene for either an …

The Effect Of Caretaker Separations On Indigenous Adolescents, Melissa L. Welch Sep 2011

The Effect Of Caretaker Separations On Indigenous Adolescents, Melissa L. Welch

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The family instability hypothesis has been researched among the general population as well as among African American and Mexican American populations, but not yet among Indigenous families. The purpose of this research was to examine whether experiencing separations from their caretakers (lasting at least one month), and the types of living arrangements that follow, affect Indigenous adolescents’ risk of meeting criteria for an internalizing, externalizing, or substance use disorder. Diagnostic criteria were assessed in Wave 6 using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children-Revised (DISC-R). The hypothesis that as the number of lifetime separations increases, the risk of meeting criteria for …

Deletion Of Rb Accelerates Pancreatic Carcinogenesis By Oncogenic Kras And Impairs Senescence In Pre-Malignant Lesions, Catherine Carrière, A. Jesse Gore, Alixanna M. Norris, Jason R. Gunn, Alison Young, Daniel Longnecker, Murray Korc Sep 2011

Deletion Of Rb Accelerates Pancreatic Carcinogenesis By Oncogenic Kras And Impairs Senescence In Pre-Malignant Lesions, Catherine Carrière, A. Jesse Gore, Alixanna M. Norris, Jason R. Gunn, Alison Young, Daniel Longnecker, Murray Korc

Dartmouth Scholarship

Rb1 encodes a cell-cycle regulator that is functionally disrupted in most human cancers. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs) have a high frequency of mutations in KRAS and INK4A/CDKN2A that might allow cells to bypass the regulatory actions of retinoblastoma (RB). To determine the role of loss of RB function in PDAC progression, we investigated the effects of Rb disruption during pancreatic malignant transformation initiated by oncogenic Kras.We generated mice with pancreas-specific disruption of Rb, in the absence or presence of oncogenic Kras, to examine the role of RB in pancreatic carcinogenesis.

High Performance Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Bile Acids And Coumarin Derived Sulfonamides, Udaya Bhasker Nasini Sep 2011

High Performance Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Bile Acids And Coumarin Derived Sulfonamides, Udaya Bhasker Nasini

Theses and Dissertations

Bile acids are water- soluble steroids and biological emulsions useful in the digestion process of food. The conjugated bile acids play a major role in fat metabolism. Deconjugation of conjugated bile acids by bacterial enzymes produces free bile acids in the colon. The conversion of these primary bile acids takes place in the gut by bacterial flora. It is postulated that a difference in the molecular forms of various bile acids and their concentration profiles exists among various animals, depending upon their food habits and type of bacterial flora. Consequently, it may be possible to distinguish various types of carnivorous …

Neuroprotective Effect Of Bellis Perennis And Hypericum Perforatum On Pc12 Cells, Andleeb Khan, Kumar Vaibhav, Hayate Javed, Mohd Khan, Rizwana Tabassum, Md Ahmed, Syed Raza, Mohd Ashafaq, V Khuwaja

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

The rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cell line is widely applied as a model system to study a variety of neuronal functions. Upon addition of nerve growth factor (NGF), these cells undergo differentiation characterized by an increase in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and extension of neurite-like processes. Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders and the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Bellis perennis (Be) and Hypericum perforatum (Hy) (6C and 30C) on healthy neuronal cells. Both homeopathic medicines have been studied at three different concentrations of 2 μl/ml, 4 μl/ml and 8 μl/ml for 96 …

Making Sense Of The Digital As Embodied Experience, Serge Bouchardon, Asunción López-Varela Sep 2011

Making Sense Of The Digital As Embodied Experience, Serge Bouchardon, Asunción López-Varela

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Making Sense of the Digital as Embodied Experience" Serge Bouchardon and Asunción López-Varela discuss a digital creation — Loss of Grasp <http://lossofgrasp.com/> — created by Serge Bouchardon and Vincent Volckaert. The work is about the notions of grasp and control. Through an analysis of Loss of Grasp, Bouchardon and López-Varela Azcárate show how the Cartesian understanding of private isolated experience, independent of reality external to it, has given way to a communal understanding of experience in which the subject constitutes itself by mirroring himself/herself on its objects, producing a mutual engagement or co-creativity among interdependent intersubjects: …

Physical And Behavioural Abilities Of Commensal Rodents Related To The Design Of Selective Rodenticide Bait Stations, William C. Pitt, Robert T. Sugihara, Laura C. Driscoll, Daniel S. Vice

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Design of selective bait stations to deliver rodenticide bait is often proposed for management of non-target animal access, but much of the information on the behavioural and physical capabilities of rodents relative to station access has not been readily available or is based on unpublished, informal observations or anecdotes repeated for many years. We studied the climbing and jumping abilities of Polynesian Rats (Rallus exulans), Norway Rats (R. norvegicus), Roof Rats (R. rallus), and House Mice (Mus musculus), focused on applications for eradication of these invasive rodents from island ecosystems in the …

Intermediality, Architecture, And The Politics Of Urbanity, Virgilio Tortosa Garrigós Sep 2011

Intermediality, Architecture, And The Politics Of Urbanity, Virgilio Tortosa Garrigós

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Intermediality, Architecture, and the Politics of Urbanity" Virgilio Tortosa Garrigós discusses aspects of the exponential development of large cities, the neoliberal economy, and the "spectacle" of architecture in the context of intermediality. With the connivance between land speculators and politicians — which has led not only to the loss of spatial identity but to irreversible pollution and geographic degradation — urbanity is epitomized on the Mediterranean coast line. In reaction to this development, a series of anti-globalization organizations and social movements, rooted in urban neighbourhoods, resist the homogenization of taste with anti-billboards and anti-advertising against consumerism and …

Blood-Speak: Ward Churchill And The Racialization Of American Indian Identity, Casey Ryan Kelly Sep 2011

Blood-Speak: Ward Churchill And The Racialization Of American Indian Identity, Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

After publishing a controversial essay on 9/11, Professor Ward Churchill’s scholarship and personal identity were subjected to a hostile public investigation. Evidence that Churchill had invented his American Indian identity created vehemence among many professors and tribal leaders who dismissed Churchill because he was not a “real Indian.” This essay examines the discourses of racial authenticity employed to distance Churchill from tribal communities and American Indian scholarship. Responses to Churchill’s academic and ethnic self-identification have retrenched a racialized definition of tribal identity defined by a narrow concept of blood. Employing what I term blood-speak, Churchill’s opponents harness a biological concept …

Deoxynivalenol Biosynthesis-Related Gene Expression During Wheat Kernel Colonization By Fusarium Graminearum, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Nancy Wenner, Gretchen A. Kuldau, Frances Trail Sep 2011

Deoxynivalenol Biosynthesis-Related Gene Expression During Wheat Kernel Colonization By Fusarium Graminearum, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Nancy Wenner, Gretchen A. Kuldau, Frances Trail

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a potent mycotoxin and virulence factor produced by Fusarium graminearum. We examined the expression of the core DON biosynthetic gene Tri5 during wheat head infection of susceptible and resistant cultivars and susceptible cultivars treated with strobilurin fungicides (e.g. azoxystrobin). DON was quantified to correlate expression with toxin accumulation. The highest Tri5 expression relative to housekeeping genes occurred at the infection front. As infection progresses, earliest-infected kernels showed diminished relative Tri5 expression but Tri5 expression never ceased during the 21 days observed. Azoxystrobin treatment showed no significant effect on either relative Tri5 expression or DON quantity. The …

Three-Dimensional Structure And Function Of The Paramecium Bursaria Chlorella Virus Capsid, Xinzheng Zhang, Ye Xiang, David Dunigan, Thomas Klose, Paul R. Chipman, James L. Van Etten, Michael G. Rossmann Sep 2011

Three-Dimensional Structure And Function Of The Paramecium Bursaria Chlorella Virus Capsid, Xinzheng Zhang, Ye Xiang, David Dunigan, Thomas Klose, Paul R. Chipman, James L. Van Etten, Michael G. Rossmann

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

A cryoelectron microscopy 8.5 Å resolution map of the 1,900 Å diameter, icosahedral, internally enveloped Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus was used to interpret structures of the virus at initial stages of cell infection. A fivefold averaged map demonstrated that two minor capsid proteins involved in stabilizing the capsid are missing in the vicinity of the unique vertex. Reconstruction of the virus in the presence of host chlorella cell walls established that the spike at the unique vertex initiates binding to the cell wall, which results in the enveloped nucleocapsid moving closer to the cell. This process is concurrent with the …

Antagonistic Effects Of Cellular Poly(C) Binding Proteins On Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Gene Expression, Phat X. Dinh, Lalit Beura, Debasis Panda, Anshuman Das, Asit K. Pattnaik Sep 2011

Antagonistic Effects Of Cellular Poly(C) Binding Proteins On Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Gene Expression, Phat X. Dinh, Lalit Beura, Debasis Panda, Anshuman Das, Asit K. Pattnaik

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Immunoprecipitation and subsequent mass spectrometry analysis of the cellular proteins from cells expressing the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) P protein identified the poly(C) binding protein 2 (PCBP2) as one of the P protein-interacting proteins. To investigate the role of PCBP2 in the viral life cycle, we examined the effects of depletion or overexpression of this protein on VSV growth. Small interfering RNA-mediated silencing of PCBP2 promoted VSV replication. Conversely, overexpression of PCBP2 in transfected cells suppressed VSV growth. Further studies revealed that PCBP2 negatively regulates overall viral mRNA accumulation and subsequent genome replication. Coimmunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence microscopic studies showed that …

Acute Fatty Liver Of Pregnancy: An Update On Mechanisms, Sathish Kumar Natarajan, Kavitha R. Thangaraj, Ashish Goel, C. E. Eapen, K. A. Balasubramanian, Anup Ramachandran Sep 2011

Acute Fatty Liver Of Pregnancy: An Update On Mechanisms, Sathish Kumar Natarajan, Kavitha R. Thangaraj, Ashish Goel, C. E. Eapen, K. A. Balasubramanian, Anup Ramachandran

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP), characterized by hepatic microvesicular steatosis, is a sudden catastrophic illness occurring almost exclusively in the third trimester of pregnancy. Defective fatty acid oxidation in the fetus has been shown to be associated with this disease. Since the placenta has the same genetic makeup as the fetus and as AFLP patients generally recover following delivery, we hypothesized that the placenta might be involved in pathogenesis of this disease. In an animal model of hepatic microvesicular steatosis (using sodium valproate), we found that microvesicular steatosis results in mitochondrial structural alterations and oxidative stress in subcellular organelles …

Group Size And Nest Spacing Affect Buggy Creek Virus (Togaviridae: Alphavirus) Infection In Nestling House Sparrows, Valerie A. Brown, Charles R. Brown

Papers in Ornithology

The transmission of parasites and pathogens among vertebrates often depends on host population size, host species diversity, and the extent of crowding among potential hosts, but little is known about how these variables apply to most vector-borne pathogens such as the arboviruses (arthropod-borne viruses). Buggy Creek virus (BCRV; Togaviridae: Alphavirus) is an RNA arbovirus transmitted by the swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarius) to the cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and the introduced house sparrow (Passer domesticus) that has recently invaded swallow nesting colonies. The virus has little impact on cliff swallows, but house sparrows are seriously …

Survival And Long-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome Of The Extremely Preterm Infant: A Systematic Review, John M. Lorenz

Saudi Medical Journal

Survival rates among live births in North American tertiary perinatal centers since 1990 were 28% at 23 weeks, 52% at 24, 70% at 25 and 83% at 26 weeks. However, there is wide variation among centers. Survival rates in 2010 among tertiary centers in the United States participating in the Vermont-Oxford Network were 34% at 23 weeks, 61% at 24, 79% at 25, and 87% at 26. All reports of neurodevelopmental outcome of extremely preterm infants in the English literature were reviewed. This literature is very heterogeneous and prevalence highly variable. Major limitations are astonishing variation in criteria for major …
