Consequences Of Habitat Selection By Two Species Of Thryothorus Wren In A Coffee Agroforestry Landscape, Melissa Mark
Consequences Of Habitat Selection By Two Species Of Thryothorus Wren In A Coffee Agroforestry Landscape, Melissa Mark
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Alternative habitats for birds are areas modified by human activities that replace natural ecosystems, but provide the resources and conditions necessary for survival and reproduction. Empirical support that shade coffee is an alternative habitat comes mainly from occupancy patterns, but few studies have examined habitat selection and its consequences in shade coffee agroecosystems. The goal of the research presented here was to evaluate the consequences of habitat selection by the rufous-and-white wren, Thryothorus rufalbus, and the plain wren, Thryothorus modestus, on reproduction in a coffee agroforestry landscape in Nicaragua. The first section of this study used compositional analysis to evaluate …
Bergson And Levinas On The Time Of Art, Katherine Graham
Bergson And Levinas On The Time Of Art, Katherine Graham
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Emmanuel Levinas and Henri Bergson have two very different approaches to the topic of aesthetics. Yet both have made unique contributions to the philosophy of art, and, specifically, to questions surrounding the temporal nature of art. This project attempts to read these two thinkers together over the question of the time of art. In doing so, this paper aims to discover whether art has its own kind of time, distinct from both the objectively measurable time favored by science, and the variable, subjective time vividly described by both Levinas and Bergson. This exploration will also seek to discover what, if …

Transformed Plants Accumulating Terpenes, Joe Chappell, Shuiqin Wu, Michel Schalk, Anthony Clark
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Patents
The present invention relates to transformed plants with an altered terpene content, preferably over-accumulating a mono- or sesqui-terpene. By transformation of plants with genes encoding terpene synthases (TS), and prenyl transferases (PRT), plants accumulating at least 1000 ng/per g of fresh leaf of a specific terpene were obtained. The present invention provides an advantageous system for production of terpenes in that any desired mono- or sesqui-terpene at the choice of the skilled person can be produced in plants. Preferably, the transformed plants contain at least one recombinant plastid targeted TS and PRT.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The structures of more than 70 low-lying water clusters ranging in size from (H2O)3 to (H2O)10 have been fully optimized with several different quantum mechanical electronic structure methods, including second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) in conjunction with correlation consistent triple-ζ basis sets (aug-cc-pVTZ for O and cc-pVTZ for H, abbreviated haTZ). Optimized structures obtained with less demanding computational procedures were compared to the MP2/haTZ ones using both MP2/haTZ single point energies and the root-mean-square (RMS) deviations of unweighted Cartesian coordinates. Based on these criteria, B3LYP/6-31+G(d,2p) substantially outperforms both HF/haTZ and MP2/6-31Gz.ast. B3LYP/6-31+G(d,2p) structures never …

Molecular Delivery To Cells Using Aspirin-Related Compounds, Mark J. Jaroszeski, Jennifer Langham, Richard Heller, Richard Gilbert
USF Patents
The present invention provides for a system and method whereby aspirin and acetic acid help to permeabilize cell membranes to allow exogenous molecules to gain access to the cell interior. As such, the present invention provides a low cost drug and gene delivery tool that can be applied in combination with other molecular delivery methods.
Integrated Thickness Shear Mode (Tsm) Sensor And Surface Acoustic Wave (Saw) Device For Simultaneous Sensing And Removal Of Analytes, Stefan Cular
USF Patents
Provided is a sensor which integrates a pair of substantially unidirectional surface acoustic wave (SAW) interdigital transducers (IDTs) and a thickness shear mode (TSM) electrode. The sensor provides simultaneous sensing and removal of material from the sensor's surface. The sensing aspect is accomplished through the use of the TSM electrode that is designed to operate between 2 and 100 MHz. The removal of material is accomplished using substantially unidirectional IDTs aligned on the substrate to produce acoustic waves, such as Rayleigh waves, across the entire TSM sensor active area. When liquid is added over the acoustic waves, acoustic streaming occurs, …

Chronic inflammation is one of the major causes of cartilage destruction in osteoarthritis. Here, we systematically analyzed the changes in gene expression associated with the progression of cartilage destruction in monoiodoacetate-induced arthritis (MIA) of the rat knee. Sprague Dawley female rats were given intra-articular injection of monoiodoacetate in the knee. The progression of MIA was monitored macroscopically, microscopically and by micro-computed tomography. Grade 1 damage was observed by day 5 post-monoiodoacetate injection, progressively increasing to Grade 2 by day 9, and to Grade 3-3.5 by day 21. Affymetrix GeneChip was utilized to analyze the transcriptome-wide changes in gene expression, and …

Redescription Of Centruroides Granosus (Thorell, 1876) And Identity Of Centrurus Granosus Simplex Thorell, 1876 (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Luis F. De Armas, Rolando Teruel, František Kovařík
Redescription Of Centruroides Granosus (Thorell, 1876) And Identity Of Centrurus Granosus Simplex Thorell, 1876 (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Luis F. De Armas, Rolando Teruel, František Kovařík
Euscorpius
Centruroides granosus (Thorell, 1876) is redescribed based on several specimens of both sexes from Panama. We demonstrate that the original description of this species was based on an immature (subadult) male, which is herein designated as the lectotype. We conclude that Centrurus granosus simplex Thorell, 1876 is a senior synonym of Centruroides testaceus arubensis (Bakker, 1963), and elevate it to species level: Centruroides simplex (Thorell, 1876), comb. nov.

Buthus Awashensis Sp. N. From Ethiopia (Scorpiones: Buthidae), František Kovařík
Euscorpius
Buthus awashensis sp. n. from the Awash region of Ethiopia, is described and compared with B. berberensis Pocock, 1900 from Somaliland. The new species is characterized chiefly by the total length of 50–65 mm. B. berberensis reaches only 45–55 mm and differs in coloration, with adults having the chela of pedipalp and chelicerae entirely yellow without dark reticulations, and by mophometric characters, mainly the shape of the chela of pedipalp. Pectinal marginal tips extend the to proximal end of the fourth sternite in males of B. awashensis sp. n. and to proximal end of the fifth sternite in males of …

Phenotype, Effector Function, And Tissue Localization Of Pd-1-Expressing Human Follicular Helper T Cell Subsets, Chuanwu Wang, Peter Hillsamer, Chang H. Kim
Department of Comparative Pathobiology Faculty Publications
Background
It is well established that PD-1 is expressed by follicular T cells but its function in regulation of human T helper cells has been unclear. We investigated the expression modality and function of PD-1 expressed by human T cells specialized in helping B cells.
Results
We found that PD-1-expressing T cells are heterogeneous in PD-1 expression. We identified three different PD-1-expressing memory T cell subsets (i.e. PD-1low (+), PD-1medium (++), and PD-1high (+++) cells). PD-1+++ T cells expressed CXCR5 and CXCR4 and were localized in the rim of germinal centers. PD-1+ or …
