The In-Hospital Suicide: A Psychological Autopsy Of A System Involving Borderline Dynamics, Kathleen A. Hughes, Md, Al Santos, Md
The In-Hospital Suicide: A Psychological Autopsy Of A System Involving Borderline Dynamics, Kathleen A. Hughes, Md, Al Santos, Md
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
This manuscript reviews principles of hospital management in the care of severe borderline patients with concomitant affective syndromes. The case presented highlights a process of experiential learning in a novice clinician (a beginning psychiatric resident) and illustrates several critical areas of concern with these patients. The following four facets of clinical management are discussed: 1) Failed attempts to understand borderline dynamics and subsequent countertransference reactions; 2) Staff resistance to consistent, honest and open acknowledgement of suicide potential; 3) Special risks when borderline dynamics are combined with affective syndromes; and 4) Possible suicide preventive measures and their relative effectiveness.

Think of 1896, the year Jacob Freud died, kindling a depression in his son Sigmund which led to The Interpretation of Dreams. To a raucous convention in Chicago, William Jennings Bryan declaimed against the gold monetary standard: "You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold" (I). Years later the monetary gold standard was abandoned during the New Deal, but Freud's newly mined "pure gold of analysis" continued to be an object of adulation and emulation, despite Freud's prediction that its …

This paper describes the molecular recognition of phenylalanine derivatives and their peptides by the synthetic receptor cucurbit[7]uril (Q7). The 4-tert-butyl and 4-aminomethyl derivatives of phenylalanine (tBuPhe and AMPhe) were identified from a screen to have 20–30-fold higher affinity than phenylalanine for Q7. Placement of these residues at the N-terminus of model tripeptides (X-Gly-Gly), resulted in no change in affinity for tBuPhe-Gly-Gly, but a remarkable 500-fold increase in affinity for AMPhe-Gly-Gly, which bound to Q7 with an equilibrium dissociation constant (Kd) value of 0.95 nM in neutral phosphate buffer. Structure–activity studies revealed that three functional groups …

Molecular Diversity Of Fungal Phylotypes Co-Amplified Alongside Nematodes From Coastal And Deep-Sea Marine Environments, Punyasloke Bhadury, Holly Bik, John D. Lambshead, Melanie C. Austen, Gary R. Smerdon, Alex D. Rogers
Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)
Nematodes and fungi are both ubiquitous in marine environments, yet few studies have investigated relationships between these two groups. Microbial species share many well-documented interactions with both free-living and parasitic nematode species, and limited data from previous studies have suggested ecological associations between fungi and nematodes in benthic marine habitats. This study aimed to further document the taxonomy and distribution of fungal taxa often co-amplified from nematode specimens. A total of 15 fungal 18S rRNA phylotypes were isolated from nematode specimens representing both deep-sea and shallow water habitats; all fungal isolates displayed high pairwise sequence identities with published data in …

In the rapidly accelerating global era in which we now live, human beings must solve a vast array of unprecedently complex problems. Perhaps the most complex and significant problems facing society today are persistent, widening, and increasingly destructive social, economic, and political inequality; globally destructive, man-made climate change; and increasingly frequent and savage terrorist acts. Given their proclaimed dedication to critical intelligence, and their unique constellation of formidable resources to develop it, institutions of higher education, we submit, have a unique responsibility to help solve these problems—indeed all the problems intensified by globalization.

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
The molecular bases of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain unclear. We used a lipidomic approach to identify lipid abnormalities in the brains of subjects with AD (N = 37) compared to age-matched controls (N = 17). The analyses revealed statistically detectable elevations in levels of non-esterified monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and mead acid (20:3n-9) in mid-frontal cortex, temporal cortex and hippocampus of AD patients. Further studies showed that brain mRNAs encoding for isoforms of the rate-limiting enzyme in MUFAs biosynthesis, stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD-1, SCD-5a and SCD-5b), were elevated in subjects with AD. The monounsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio ('desaturation index')--displayed a strong …

Fabrication And Application Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Templated Silicon Nanomaterials, Jun Song
Theses and Dissertations
A process, called carbon nanotube templated microfabrication (CNT-M) makes high aspect ratio microstructures out of a wide variety of materials by growing patterned vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) as a framework and then infiltrating various materials into the frameworks by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). By using the CNT-M procedure, a partial Si infiltration of carbon nanotube frameworks results in porous three dimensional microscale shapes consisting of silicon-carbon nanotube composites. The addition of thin silicon shells to the vertically aligned CNTs (VACNTs) enables the fabrication of robust silicon nanostructures with edibility to design a wide range of geometries. Nanoscale dimensions are …

Biomimicry: Architecture That Imitates Nature’S Functions, Forms And Parts, Kostika Spaho
Architecture Theses and Projects
Architecture imitates nature’s functions, forms, and parts in order to solve the problems of sustainability, efficiency, strength, durability and more. Nature displays its solutions to these problems through endless examples, which appear everywhere on this planet. Such designs represent nature’s work, which has evolved over a “3.8 billion year period.” Nature’s creations are carefully articulated in order to fit in with their context, and to optimize their need for energy and material. It is likely that the answers to most of our design questions lie amid the surrounding organic fabric.

Early Exposure To Paraquat Sensitizes Dopaminergic Neurons To Subsequent Silencing Of Pink1 Gene Expression In Mice., Hongxia Zhou, Cao Huang, Jianbin Tong, Xugang Xia
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Environmental exposure, genetic modification, and aging are considered risky for Parkinson's disease (PD). How these risk factors cooperate to induce progressive neurodegeneration in PD remains largely unknown. Paraquat is an herbicide commonly used for weed and grass control. Exposure to paraquat is associated with the increased incidence of PD. In contrast to familial PD, most sporadic PD cases do not have genetic mutation, but may suffer from partial dysfunction of neuron-protective genes as aging. Using conditional transgenic RNAi, we showed that temporal silencing of PINK1 expression in adult mice increased striatal dopamine, the phenotype that could not be induced by …

Composition Of Two Seaweed-Oligosaccharide-Lysates Derived From Agarase As-Ii And Their Ferrous-Chelating Antioxidant Power, Fu-Jin Wang, Sheen-Kye Kang, Chorng-Liang Pan, Shao-Chi Wu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Seaweed-oligosaccharide-lysates (SwOSLys) Gra-C108, Mon-C108, Gra-AS-II, or Mon-AS-II are seaweed polysaccharide extracts (SwPSExts) Gra or Mon, which are digested by either Aeromonas (A.) salmonicida MAEF108 crude agarases or Agarase AS-II that was produced from marine bacteria A. salmonicida MAEF108. High-performance liquid chromatography revealed that there were neoagarohexaose and neoagarotetraose in both Gra-C108 and Gra-AS-II and that neoagarooligosaccharide was absent in both Mon-C108 and Mon-AS-II. The polyphenol content of SwOSLys was higher than that of SwPSExts, though without significant difference (p < 0.05) on lysates, as digested by crude MAEF108-agarases or Agarase AS-II. Comparison of the chelating effects of GraC108 and Gra-AS-II on Fe2+ shows that not only do the polyphenolic compound but also the neoagarooligosaccharide show antioxidative properties.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project elucidated the explanatory model of dengue fever held by members of urban communities in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The study was conducted over a four-month period from May-August of 2011, and it was divided into two stages. The first stage of the project consisted of volunteer participation with dengue fever surveillance brigades in the three communities with the highest incidence of dengue fever during the beginning of 2011. This initial stage employed participant observation as its research method. The second stage was conducted in a different community within Tegucigalpa. The primary research methods employed during the second stage of the …

Weaving Functional Brain Imaging Into The Tapestry Of Evidence: A Case For Functional Neuroimaging In Federal Criminal Courts, Adam Teitcher
Weaving Functional Brain Imaging Into The Tapestry Of Evidence: A Case For Functional Neuroimaging In Federal Criminal Courts, Adam Teitcher
Fordham Law Review
Recent advances in brain imaging technologies allow researchers to "peer inside" a defendant's brain. Although functional neuroimaging evidence is frequently used in civil litigation, federal courts have been hesitant to admit it into evidence in criminal trials. Scholars and commentators alike continue to debate the merits, detriments, and general admissibility of functional neuroimaging evidence in the criminal context. Meanwhile, federal judges repeatedly admit various forms of forensic science into evidence without evaluating them under the appropriate admissibility standards. This Note argues that this has created a double standard for evidence admissibility. Functional neuroimaging evidence may, in fact, be more scientifically …
