Levels-Of-Processing Effects On "Remember" Responses In Recognition For Familiar And Unfamiliar Tunes, Esra Mungan, Zehra F. Peynircioğlu, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

We investigated the effect of level-of-processing manipulations on "remember" and "know" responses in episodic melody recognition (Experiments 1 and 2) and how this effect is modulated by item familiarity (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, participants performed 2 conceptual and 2 perceptual orienting tasks while listening to familiar melodies: judging the mood, continuing the tune, tracing the pitch contour, and counting long notes. The conceptual mood task led to higher d' rates for "remember" but not "know" responses. In Experiment 2, participants either judged the mood or counted long notes of tunes with high and low familiarity. A level-of-processing effect emerged …

Multiagent Learning Through Indirect Encoding, David B. D'Ambrosio Jan 2011

Multiagent Learning Through Indirect Encoding, David B. D'Ambrosio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Designing a system of multiple, heterogeneous agents that cooperate to achieve a common goal is a difficult task, but it is also a common real-world problem. Multiagent learning addresses this problem by training the team to cooperate through a learning algorithm. However, most traditional approaches treat multiagent learning as a combination of multiple single-agent learning problems. This perspective leads to many inefficiencies in learning such as the problem of reinvention, whereby fundamental skills and policies that all agents should possess must be rediscovered independently for each team member. For example, in soccer, all the players know how to pass and …

Use Of Vegetative Mulch As Daily And Intermediate Landfill Cover, Assal Edwar Haddad Jan 2011

Use Of Vegetative Mulch As Daily And Intermediate Landfill Cover, Assal Edwar Haddad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Management of yard waste is a significant challenge in the US, where in 2008 13.2% of the 250 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) was reported to be yard waste. This study describes research conducted in the laboratory and field to examine the application of vegetative mulch as daily and intermediate landfill cover. Mulch was found to exhibit stronger physical properties than soil, leading to a more stable landfill slope. Compaction of mulch was found to be significantly greater than soil, potentially resulting in airspace recovery. Degradation of mulch produced a soil-like material; degradation resulted in lower physical strength …

Evapotranspiration Information Reporting: I. Factors Governing Measurement Accuracy, Richard G. Allen, Luis S. Pereira, Terry A. Howell, Marvin E. Jensen

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

More and more evapotranspiration models, evapotranspiration crop coefficients and associated measurements of evapotranspiration (ET) are being reported in the literature and used to develop, calibrate and test important ET process models. ET data are derived from a range of measurement systems including lysimeters, eddy covariance, Bowen ratio, water balance (gravimetric, neutron meter, other soil water sensing), sap flow, scintillometry and even satellite-based remote sensing and direct modeling. All of these measurement techniques require substantial experimental care and are prone to substantial biases in reported results. Reporting of data containing measurement biases causes substantial confusion and impedance to the advancement of …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Global change encompasses changes in the characteristics of inter-related climate variables in space and time, and derived changes in terrestrial processes, including human activities that affect the environment. As such, projected global change includes groundwater systems. Here, groundwater is defined as all subsurface water including soil water, deeper vadose zone water, and unconfined and confined aquifer waters. Potential effects of climate change combined with land and water management on surface waters have been studied in some detail. Equivalent studies of groundwater systems have lagged behind these advances, but research and broader interest in projected climate effects on groundwater have been …

Landform, Soil, And Plant Relationships To Nitrate Accumulation, Central Nevada, W.D. Nettleton, F.F. Peterson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Nitrate (NO3 −1) accumulates in Haplocambids and Torrifluvents in inset fan and fan skirt positions in central Nevada. The soils store as much as 17,600 kg of NO3 −1 N ha−1 within the upper 208 cm. This paper provides an explanation. These Holocene soils receive NO3 −1 N from mineralization of organic matter and other NO3 −1 N sources including snowmelt. The NO3 −1 is delivered to soils in the first part of snowmelt in run-off from the higher surfaces. The last part of the melt and the run-off, when sufficient, serve to move the …

Insight Into The Cellular Alterations Required For Establishing Opportunistic Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Infections, Dacie R. Bridge

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Gram-negative, opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) is responsible for causing disease of high morbidity and mortality in individuals who are immunocompromised, suffer from damaged epithelial barriers, and who have cystic fibrosis. However, the underlying host cell compromise that allows the establishment of Pa infections remains unknown and is of importance to the development of novel strategies that interrupt Pa infections. The type III secretion system (T3S) allows the direct translocation of bacterial effectors into the host cell cytosol, and in this study was used first, to identify host cell properties involved in the initiation of Pa infections, and then …

Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysis Promoted By Selective Sorption Of Carbon Dioxide: Microreactor Experiments, Ramanjaneyulu Katta Jan 2011

Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysis Promoted By Selective Sorption Of Carbon Dioxide: Microreactor Experiments, Ramanjaneyulu Katta

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Production of hydrogen via the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction normally requires multiple reaction steps followed by CO2 separation. However, in-situ removal of CO2 via the carbonation reaction between CaO and CO2 provides the opportunity to combine WGS and separation reactions into a single unit. Consequently, the need for heat exchangers between catalyst beds as well as the absorption and stripping units for CO2 removal can be eliminated.;In this study, a commercial high-temperature-shift (HTS) catalyst, Fe 2O3/Cr2O3/CuO is used. Calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium oxide incorporated with calcium aluminate (Ca12Al 14O33) are used as sorbents for CO2 capture. The CaO/Ca12Al14O33 sorbent …

The Role Of The Nr4a Orphan Nuclear Receptor Nor1 In Vascular Cells And Atherosclerosis, Yue Zhao Jan 2011

The Role Of The Nr4a Orphan Nuclear Receptor Nor1 In Vascular Cells And Atherosclerosis, Yue Zhao

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The neuron-derived orphan receptor 1 (NOR1) belongs to the NR4A nuclear receptor subfamily. As an immediate early response gene, NOR1 is rapidly induced by a broad spectrum of physiological and pathological signals. Functional studies demonstrate NOR1 as a constitutively active ligand-independent nuclear receptor whose transcriptional activity is dependent on both expression level and posttranslational modifications. To date, an increasing number of studies have demonstrated a pivotal role of NOR1 in the transcriptional control of metabolism and the development of cardiovascular diseases.

In this dissertation, we demonstrate NOR1 expression in endothelial cells and sub-endothelial cells of human atherosclerotic lesions. In response …

Functional Connectivity For Configural And Featural Face Processing In The Broad Autism Phenotype, Jonathan Darrell Clark Jan 2011

Functional Connectivity For Configural And Featural Face Processing In The Broad Autism Phenotype, Jonathan Darrell Clark

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

During normal development, face processing involves a gradual shift from a featurally oriented style to a mature configural style by adolescence. This shift may coincide with increased right hemispheric dominance for faces supporting configural processing. Previous studies suggest that individuals diagnosed with ASD continue to process faces using individual parts and features into adulthood. This continued bias may be due to deficits in configural processing abilities. The current study investigated measures of functional connectivity during featural and configural processing of faces in broad autism phenotype sibling (ASD-sibs) children compared to age, sex, and handedness matched normal developing (ND) controls and …

Mississippi Period Occupational And Political History Of The Middle Savannah River Valley, Keith Stephenson Jan 2011

Mississippi Period Occupational And Political History Of The Middle Savannah River Valley, Keith Stephenson

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Research focusing on the political economy of Mississippian mound centers in the middle Savannah River valley has prompted a reevaluation of current interpretations regarding societal complexity. I conclude the clearest expression of classic Mississippian riverine-adaptation is evident at centers immediately below the Fall Line with their political ties to chiefdom centers in the Piedmont, and especially Etowah. By contrast, those centers on the interior Coastal Plain were politically autonomous with minimal signatures in social ranking. The scale of appropriated labor and resulting level of surplus production, necessitated by upland settlement on the Aiken Plateau, fostered social contradictions making communally-oriented and …

Studies On Silicon Nmr Characterization And Kinetic Modeling Of The Structural Evolution Of Siloxane-Based Materials And Their Applications In Drug Delivery And Adsorption, Jyotrhirmai Ambati

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents studies of the synthetic processes and applications of siloxane-based materials. Kinetic investigations of bridged organoalkoxysilanes that are precursors to organic-inorganic hybrid polysilsesquioxanes are a primary focus. Quick gelation despite extensive cyclization is found during the polymerization of bridged silane precursors except for silanes with certain short bridges. This work is an attempt to characterize and understand some of the distinct features of bridged silanes using experimental characterization, kinetic modeling and simulation. In addition to this, the dissertation shows how the properties of siloxane- materials can be engineered for drug delivery and adsorption.

The phase behavior of polymerizing …

Intermediate Steps Of Loline Alkaloid Biosynthesis, Jerome Ralph Faulkner Jan 2011

Intermediate Steps Of Loline Alkaloid Biosynthesis, Jerome Ralph Faulkner

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Epichloë species and their anamorphs, Neotyphodium species, are fungal endophytes that inhabit cool-season grasses and often produce bioprotective alkaloids. These alkaloids include lolines, which are insecticidal and insect feeding deterrents. Lolines are exo-1-aminopyrrolizidines with an oxygen bridge between carbons 2 and 7, and are usually methylated and formylated or acetylated on the 1-amine. In previously published studies lolines were shown to be derived from the amino acids L-proline and L-homoserine. In addition the gene cluster involved in loline-alkaloid biosynthesis has also been characterized. In this dissertation a survey of plant-endophyte symbioses revealed a phenotype with only N-acetylnorloline. This …

Novel Mechanisms In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Razvan I. Arsenescu Jan 2011

Novel Mechanisms In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Razvan I. Arsenescu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative colitis, are idiopathic chronic conditions with multifactorial determinants. In general, terms, intestinal inflammation results from abnormal host-microbe interactions. Alterations in homeostasis involve host genetic factors, environmental cues and unique luminal microbial niches. We have examined the coordinated expressions of several molecular targets relevant to the mucosal immune system and identified signature biomarkers of IBD. Qualitative and quantitative changes in the composition of microbiota can be related to unique immuno-phenotypes. This in turn can have more systemic effects that involve energy metabolism. Adiponectin, an adipose tissue derived adipokine, can restore cellular ATP levels and …

Bayesian Semiparametric Generalizations Of Linear Models Using Polya Trees, Angela Schoergendorfer Jan 2011

Bayesian Semiparametric Generalizations Of Linear Models Using Polya Trees, Angela Schoergendorfer

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In a Bayesian framework, prior distributions on a space of nonparametric continuous distributions may be defined using Polya trees. This dissertation addresses statistical problems for which the Polya tree idea can be utilized to provide efficient and practical methodological solutions.

One problem considered is the estimation of risks, odds ratios, or other similar measures that are derived by specifying a threshold for an observed continuous variable. It has been previously shown that fitting a linear model to the continuous outcome under the assumption of a logistic error distribution leads to more efficient odds ratio estimates. We will show that deviations …

Differential Innate Immune Responses Correlate With The Contrasting Pathogenicity Of The Equine H7n7 Influenza Virus Demonstrated In Horses And Balb/C Mice, Liang Zhang Jan 2011

Differential Innate Immune Responses Correlate With The Contrasting Pathogenicity Of The Equine H7n7 Influenza Virus Demonstrated In Horses And Balb/C Mice, Liang Zhang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Equine influenza virus causes a mild, self-limiting upper respiratory disease in its natural host. In stark contrast, equine influenza viruses of the H7N7 subtype produce lethal infection in BALB/c mice. This dissertation explored the mechanism underlying the differential pathogenicity of the equine H7N7 influenza virus observed in horses and BALB/c mice. Initially, a comparative study of the pathogenesis was conducted in BALB/c mice inoculated intranasally with a representative isolate of either H7N7 or H3N8 subtype equine influenza virus. All H3N8 virus-infected mice survived the infection whereas 100% mortality was documented for the mice receiving the H7N7 virus by day 8 …

Ash Removal From Low Rank Coal, Deepankar Virendra Sharma Jan 2011

Ash Removal From Low Rank Coal, Deepankar Virendra Sharma

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The work presented here is concerned with cleaning of low rank coals such as Texas lignite. As a result, Jewett Texas lignite was cleaned from 28% ash by weight to 8.5%. In the first part of the thesis, it is proved that conventional cleaning techniques used for bituminous and sub-bituminous having pyritic impurities does not work for cleaning lignite coal because of different coal chemistry and the presence of clay impurities. Hence after trying conventional processes, there was a need for a new technique capable of removing clay from low rank coals.;Micronized coal, obtained from DevourX LLC, proved to be …

Gender Recognition And Appearance Description In Unconstrained Images Of Human Body, Qin Wu Jan 2011

Gender Recognition And Appearance Description In Unconstrained Images Of Human Body, Qin Wu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gender recognition has many useful applications, ranging from business intelligence, through to image search and social activity analysis. Traditional research on gender recognition focuses on face images in a constrained environment. In this work, we propose a novel problem of gender recognition in articulated human body images acquired from an unconstrained environment in the real world. Our empirical study answers the question of whether gender recognition can be performed in articulated body images, and discovers important issues such as which body parts are informative, how many body parts are needed to combine together, and what representations are good for articulated …

This Note discusses the social movement to confer legal protections and rights on animals in an effort to end their suffering in laboratories from invasive research. It argues that primates, in particular, should be retired to sanctuaries where they will be guaranteed a right to dignity and a life free from confinement and torture. Part I of this Note reveals a glimpse of the range of research conducted on primates, and offers examples of primates’ intellectual abilities and emotional capacities. Part II takes account of competing theory—animal welfare theory, animal rights theory, and feminist animal care theory—and traces the evolution …

An Investigation Into Use Of The Freshwater Gastropod Viviparus As A Recorder Of Past Climatic Change, Melanie Bugler Jan 2011

An Investigation Into Use Of The Freshwater Gastropod Viviparus As A Recorder Of Past Climatic Change, Melanie Bugler

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Through isotopic analysis of Viviparus lentus (V. lentus) a high resolution record of stepwise changes in δ18O and δ13C across the Eocene / Oligocene transition and Oi-1 glacial maximum has been produced for the continental Solent Group strata, Isle of Wight (UK). Comparison of this V. lentus δ18Ocarb. record with high resolution marine δ18Ocarb. records shows that similar isotopic shifts exist in the near coastal continental and marine realms. In order to calculate palaeotemperatures from this new continental record an investigation into the biology of modern Viviparus and its effect on the isotopic composition of its shell carbonate was undertaken. …

Water Law In The United States And Brazil--Climate Change & Two Approaches To Emerging Water Poverty, David N. Cassuto, Romulo S.R. Sampaio Jan 2011

Water Law In The United States And Brazil--Climate Change & Two Approaches To Emerging Water Poverty, David N. Cassuto, Romulo S.R. Sampaio

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article examines two of the major water legal regimes in the Americas-that of Brazil and the United States. Both countries have extensive wet and dry regions and both hydro-regimes face a significant threat from global warming. Brazil, for instance, is home to between eight and fifteen percent of the world's fresh water, and its fast-growing economy and population present major challenges in management and allocation. The U.S. also faces major water allocation problems resulting from past settlement policies; unsustainable reclamation projects; and also fast-growing domestic, industrial and agricultural demand. In the United States, water has traditionally been perceived as …

Unsex Cedaw, Or What's Wrong With Women's Rights, Darren Rosenblum Jan 2011

Unsex Cedaw, Or What's Wrong With Women's Rights, Darren Rosenblum

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Part I discusses why CEDAW continues to be relevant as the primary source of international law on sex discrimination. Until the advent of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), CEDAW was the most widely-subscribed international treaty. Some of the draft language of CEDAW reflects the tension between category and identity and how "women" won the debate. Part II contrasts CEDAW with the Convention for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). It points to the identitarian focus of CEDAW as a core reason for its failures. Had CEDAW reflected a category focus, as CERD did, it would more …

Background: We have recently shown that deregulation PI3-kinase/AKT survival pathway plays an important role in pathogenesis of diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). In an attempt to identify newer therapeutic agents, we investigated the role of Resveratrol (trans-3,4′, 5-trihydroxystilbene), a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound on a panel of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) cells in causing inhibition of cell viability and inducing apoptosis.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We investigated the action of Resveratrol on DLBCL cells and found that Resveratrol inhibited cell viability and induced apoptosis by inhibition of constitutively activated AKT and its downstream targets via generation of reactive oxygen species …

Assisted Migration: A Viable Conservation Strategy To Preserve The Biodiversity Of Threatened Island Nations?, Jessica A. Wentz Jan 2011

Assisted Migration: A Viable Conservation Strategy To Preserve The Biodiversity Of Threatened Island Nations?, Jessica A. Wentz

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Anthropogenic climate change poses a substantial threat to biodiversity. The IPCC estimates that 20-30% of species will face an increased risk of extinction if the average global temperature rises more than 1.5 to 2.5 degrees Celsius. Additional scientific studies indicate that 15-37% of species may become extinct by 2050 due to global warming, based on current emissions trajectories. Domestic and international strategies to manage this threat have traditionally focused on conservation and mitigation. In the last few years, however, policy makers have recognized that near-term climate impacts are inevitable and thus adaptation strategies are required to protect both humans and …

Ethnic Politics And Conflicts In Nigeria: Theoretical Perspective, Joseph C. Ebegbulem Jan 2011

Ethnic Politics And Conflicts In Nigeria: Theoretical Perspective, Joseph C. Ebegbulem

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

According to Okwudiba Nnoli (2007) “Ethnicity is a social phenomenon associated with contact among ethnic groups that exist within the same political system. it is characterized by cultural prejudice and social discrimination.” Nigeria is confronted with problems which have resulted in the dramatic upsurge in ethnic conflicts which is a bye-product of ethnic nationalism and political demands based on ethnicity. From the colonial period to the return to civil politics since 1999 Nigeria has witnessed the resurgence of political demands along ethnic lines. The liberalization of the polity and the expansion of the political space appear to have provided additional …

An Analysis Of The Million Module March Algorithm Applied To The Atron Robotic Platform, James Phipps Jan 2011

An Analysis Of The Million Module March Algorithm Applied To The Atron Robotic Platform, James Phipps

Theses

The Million Module March algorithm is a locomotion planning algorithm for self-reconfiguring robotic systems. It was first introduced by Robert Fitch and Zack Butler. It has already been proven to successfully plan movement for a kinematic abstraction whose traits are very different from the kinematic traits of the ATRON system. In this work we further examine this algorithm, and an adaptation of it to the ATRON robotic system. We examine a two dimensional proof of the reachability of connected configurations of sliding squares, and expand the proof to the three dimensional SlidingCube model of a self-reconfiguring robot. Using this proof, …
