Context: Knee pain is experienced by many people. Because of this, authors have started researching the effects of pain on lower extremity mechanics and also on static and dynamic postural control. However, the effects of pain are difficult to study due to associated confounding variables. Objective: We asked: (1) Will experimentally-induced anterior knee pain alter perceived pain using the visual analogue scale? ; (2) will perceived pain affect postural control as measured by center-of-pressure during static and dynamic movement? Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is characterized by hepatic steatosis, elevated levels of circulating free fatty acids (FFA), endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and hepatocyte lipoapoptosis. Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) death receptor 5 (DR5) is significantly elevated in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and steatotic hepatocytes demonstrate increased sensitivity to TRAIL-mediated cell death. Nonetheless, a role for TRAIL and/or DR5 in mediating lipoapoptotic pathways is unexplored. Here, we examined the contribution of DR5 death signaling to lipoapoptosis by free fatty acids. There are two closely related hik31 operons involved in signal transduction on the chromosome and the pSYSX plasmid in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803. We studied the growth, cell morphology, and gene expression in operon and hik mutants for both copies, under different growth conditions, to examine whether the duplicated copies have the same or different functions and gene targets and whether they are similarly regulated. Phenotype analysis suggested that both operons regulated common and separate targets in the light and the dark. We measure the bending energy of double-stranded DNA in the nonlinear (sharply bent) regime. The measurements are obtained from the melting curves of stressed DNA ring molecules. The nonlinear elastic behavior is captured by a single parameter: the critical torque τc at which the molecule develops a kink. In this regime, the elastic energy is linear in the kink angle. This phenomenology is the same as for the previously reported case of nicked DNA. For the sequences examined, we find τc=31 pN×nm. This critical torque corresponds to a characteristic energy scale (π/2)τc=12 kT room relevant for molecular biology processes associated …

The Risk Of Hospitalizing Suicidal Patients: A Personal Retrospective, Leora Bar-Levav, M.D.

Many statistically significant risk factors for suicide have been identified. Unfortunately, no study can identify the patient who will, in fact, kill himself. Maintaining a low threshold for hospitalization of potentially suicidal patients generally lowers their short-term risk. Hospitalization, however, like every medical intervention, carries attendant side effects. The dynamic implications of hospitalization for suicidal patients are considered in this paper along with recommendations to lessen the deleterious effects of such an intervention.

When children are psychologically bonded to a caretaking adult they experience a characteristic spectrum of emotions and behaviors upon being separated from that attachment figure. This paper reviews the literature pertaining to the separation phenomenon and the emotional experience of hospitalisation for children in an attempt to integrate this knowledge into the diagnosis and treatment of children hospitalized medically and psychiatrically.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a potentially fatal complication of neuroleptic treatment. It is characterized by a variery of signs and symptoms associated with autonomic instability, and hypothalamic and extrapyramidal dysfunction. Since other medical disorders may mimic its clinical presentation, the accurate recognition of this syndrome in the medical setting is often a diagnostic dilemma. Three medically ill patients with a clinical presentation suggestive of neuroleptic malignant syndrome are presented here. The authors discuss the complexity of making the diagnosis, and offer a brief review of the literature.

Demystifying The Psychiatric Case Formulation, Len Sperry, M.D., Ph.D.

Until recently case formulation was an ethereal art, in that there was 110 standard, agreed-upon format for conceptualizing and writing formulations. However, the increasing emphasis on accountability in psychiatric care, the trend toward theoretical integration, and the difficulty trainees experience in mastering formulation skills highlight the need for a standard format. The descriptive, etiological and treatment-prognostic components of a formulation are discussed as a standard format for conceptualizing and writing case formulations. Four written formulations are described in terms of content, structure and process to illustrate this format.

Previous research attests to the relationship between social support and positive health outcomes while linking social isolation or aggression/hostility with negative health outcomes. Several studies examining atherosclerosis with either genetic or behavioral origins, have reported decreased disease severity in socially supportive environments. In order to identify and understand the mechanism responsible for decreased disease, the current study examined physiological differences in New Zealand White rabbits within unstable, stable, and isolated social environments and observed whether functional hormonal changes were apparent over time and as a response to behavior characteristic of these environments. The genus Fragaria comprises species at ploidy levels ranging from diploid (2n = 2x = 14) to decaploid (2n = 10x = 70). Fluorescence in situ hybridization with 5S and 25S rDNA probes was performed to gather cytogenetic information that illuminates genomic divergence among different taxa at multiple ploidy levels, as well as to explore the evolution of ribosomal RNA genes during polyploidization in Fragaria.

Little is known about the learning ability of crustaceans, especially with respect to their anti-predator responses to invasive species. In many vertebrates, anti-predator behaviour is influenced by experience during ontogeny. Here, predator-naïve glass shrimp (Paratya australiensisis) were exposed to a predatory, invasive fish species, Gambusia holbrooki, to determine whether shrimp could learn to: (1) avoid the scent of Gambusia via classical conditioning; and (2) restrict their activity patterns to the night to reduce predatory encounters. Conditioned shrimp were placed in containers in aquaria containing Gambusia for 3 days during which time they could be harassed but not consumed by Gambusia. …

A series of amino acid conjugates of chlorin e 6, containing lysine or aspartic acid residues in positions 17 3, 15 2, or 13 1 of the macrocycle were synthesized and investigated as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy of tumors. All three regioisomers were synthesized in good yields and in five steps or less from pheophytin a (1). In vitro investigations using human carcinoma HEp2 cells show that the 15 2-lysyl regioisomers accumulate the most within cells, and the most phototoxic are the 13 1 regioisomers. Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) improves the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for patients with end-stage heart failure (HF) (Friedrich & Bohm, 2007). Religious and spiritual practices positively influence health and well-being for cardiac patients (Ai, Park, Huang, Rodgers, & Tice, 2007; Blackhall, & Koenig, 1998). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of spiritual well-being (SWB) and religious well-being (RWB) and coping styles and methods (CSM) on health related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients with MCS.
