Adhesions occurring after initial surgery increase complications in secondary thyroid operations. Therefore use of anti-adhesive barriers may reduce complication rates of secondary thyroid operations. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of hyaluronic acid-carboxymethyl cellulose membrane (HA-CMC, Seprafilm®) and polylactic acid barrier film (PLA, Surgiwrap™) in reducing adhesions after thyroid surgery. Materials and methods: A randomized-controlled experimental animal model was utilized. Forty-eight male Wistar Albino rats were randomly divided into 3 equal groups, forming study and control groups. Thyroid surgery was performed in all subjects. HA-CMC and PLA were applied between the thyroid zone and strap muscles after thyroid surgery …

Gingival Abscess Removal Using A Soft-Tissue Laser, Soni Prasad, Edward A. Monaco, Jr., Sebastiano Andreana
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
Gingival abscess, also known as parulis, is defined as a localized, acute inflammatory lesion that may arise from a number of sources, including microbial plaque infection, trauma, and foreign body impaction. It often presents as a smooth, fluctuant, red-color swelling and can occasionally be painful. It is generally limited to marginal and interdental gingiva. Based on its location it has been classified as a type of periodontal abscess which does not involve any attachment loss. The treatment comprises of removal of the cause and, in acute situations, excision of the abscess. A typical gingival abscess is easy to diagnose; however, …

To investigate the effects of methanol extracts obtained from Usnea longissima (UME) on the genotoxicity and oxidative stress of aflatoxin B_1 (AFB_1) in cultured human blood cells. Materials and methods: Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and micronucleus (MN) tests were used for estimation of genotoxic influences. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and the malondialdehyde (MDA) level were also measured to evaluate the antioxidative effect of UME. Results: In the SCE and MN test systems, it was observed that UME suppressed the mutagenic effects of AFB_1. Furthermore, an increase of MDA level and a decrease of SOD and …

Exotic Localized Structures Based On The Symmetrical Lucas Function Of The (2+1)-Dimensional Generalized Nizhnik-Novikov-Veselov System, Emad A-B. Abdel-Salam, Zeid I. A. Al-Muhiameed
Turkish Journal of Physics
Based on the Lucas Riccati method and a linear variable separation method, new variable separation solutions of the (2+1)-dimensional generalized Nizhnik-Novikov-Veselov system are derived. Then, we give a positive answer for the following question: Are there any localized excitations derived by the use of another functions? For this purpose, some attention will be paid to dromion, peakon, multi dromion-solitoff excitations, regular fractal dromions, stochastic fractal dromion structure and combined structures including bell-like compactons, peakon-like compactons and compacton-like semi-foldons based on the golden main. With the help of the modified Weierstrass function, we discuss the stochastic fractal dromion structure both analytically …

Optical Characterization Of Fe^{3+} Doped Cds Nanoparticles Synthesized By Wet-Chemical Route, Seyed Mohammad Taheri Otaqsara, Mohammad Hassan Yousefi, Ali Azam Khosravi
Turkish Journal of Physics
Fe^{3+} doped CdS nanoparticles using Mercaptoethanol as a capping agent were prepared by colloidal wet-chemical method. UV-VIS spectra show that Fe-doping can effectively tune energy band structure, i.e. a large blue shift (\sim 30 nm) with increasing Fe concentration. PL measurement of doped CdS nanoparticles shows an additional emission band at \sim 532 nm, which can be due to radiative transition of dopant level to ground state. X-ray diffraction patterns studies revealed cubic crystal phase. TEM micrographs show a spherical shape and nearly well distribution with an average particle size of \sim 4 nm.

As with all electromagnetic fields, the ELF field decays rapidly with distance from source or hot spots. The average observed value of ELF in the offices ranged from 3.5 to 5.0 mG. A significant hot spot …

The External Morphology Of The Gill Of Patella Caerulea L. (Mollusca: Gastropoda), Deni̇z Akşi̇t, Beri̇a Falakali Mutaf
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Gross morphology of the gill was studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to associate it with its function in genus Patella. Secondary gills consisted of a single layer of gill folds, which appear mostly as triangular leaflets in scanning electron micrographs. The lamellae showed a prominent thickening on the free margin and horizontal swellings, which bear a series of ciliary structures on the frontal surface, as well as disperse bunches. They differed from the discocilia and, because chemoreception has been attributed to them in the absence of an osphradium, they are thought to contribute to the primary …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
The genotoxic effects of sublethal doses of cadmium in peripheral erythrocytes of Oreochromis niloticus was investigated using micronucleus (MN) and nuclear abnormalities (NAs) tests. For this reason, the fish were exposed to medium changes of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L doses of cadmium (Cd) during an average treatment period of 10 days. On the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 10th days of the test period, the erythrocytes, including the micronuclei (MN) and other nuclear abnormalities such as lobbed nuclei (LB), blebbed nuclei (BL), and notched nuclei (NT), were counted and pointed out. As a positive control, a 4 mg/L dose of cyclophosphamide …

Shorebirds In The Gediz Delta (İzmir, Turkey): Breeding And Wintering Abundances, Distributions, And Seasonal Occurrences, Ortaç Onmuş, Mehmet Siki
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The present study describes breeding and wintering abundances, distributions, and seasonal occurrences of shorebirds (waders) in the Gediz Delta (İzmir-Turkey). Breeding abundance and distribution, and wintering abundance data were collected by carrying out breeding bird surveys in 2002 and 2006, and waterbird censuses between 1990 and 2007, respectively. Seasonal occurrences were determined using 432 different observations corresponding to 5043 different records between 1990 and 2007. Thirty-eight wader species were observed with a weekly average of 22.5 ± 4.0. Breeding evidence was obtained for 9 species in 2002 and 8 species in 2006. Average number of waders identified during yearly mid-winter …

Length distribution, sex ratio, length-weight relationship, age, growth, spawning period, age, and length at first maturity of four-spotted goby inhabiting İzmir Bay were investigated. A total of 1696 four-spotted goby were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007. The size of the fish sampled ranged from 3.1 to 9.2 cm total length. The samples were composed of 31.1% females, 27.7% males, and 41.2% juvenile individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.89. The age of the fish ranged from 1 to 5 years. The length-weight relationship and the von Bertalanffy growth function were estimated for all …
