Seed Morphology And Anatomy Of The Mediterranean Pentamerous Species Of Erica (Ericaceae), Jaime Fagundez, Jesus Izco Jan 2011

Seed Morphology And Anatomy Of The Mediterranean Pentamerous Species Of Erica (Ericaceae), Jaime Fagundez, Jesus Izco

Turkish Journal of Botany

The species of the "Pentapera group" are distinguished from the rest of the European and Mediterranean Erica L. species by having 5 corolla lobes and sepals instead of 4, and 10 stamens instead of 8. The genus Pentapera Klotzsch was proposed for these taxa but recent studies regards it as part of Erica. Two species are recognised: Erica sicula Guss. and E. bocquetii (Peşmen) P.F.Stevens, and 3 subspecies have been described within E. sicula. This taxonomic treatment is still under discussion and relationships with other species have been poorly discussed. Seed morphology of the 2 species and the 3 subspecies …

A New Variety Of Bromus (Poaceae) From Turkey: Bromus Psammophilus Var. Robustus Var. Nova, Hali̇l Çakan, Hildemar Scholz

Turkish Journal of Botany

Bromus psammophilus P.M.Sm., a rare endemic species, was known only from the type collection on the coastal dunes of Çukurova Delta (Adana, Turkey). Specimens belonging to the new and typical varieties of this taxon were collected from sand dunes and dune slacks where the type specimen was collected the first time. Bromus psammophilus var. robustus Çakan & H.Scholz was described as a new variety; in examination of the newly collected specimens, it differs from the typical variety by its longer spikelets, higher flower numbers in spikelets, and glabrous glumes.

Temporary Insanity: The Strange Life And Times Of The Perfect Defense, Russell D. Covey Jan 2011

Temporary Insanity: The Strange Life And Times Of The Perfect Defense, Russell D. Covey

Faculty Publications By Year

The temporary insanity defense has a prominent place in the mythology of criminal law. Because it seems to permit factually guilty defendants to escape both punishment and institutionalization, some imagine it as the “perfect defense.” In fact, the defense has been invoked in a dizzying variety of contexts and, at times, has proven highly successful. Successful or not, the temporary insanity defense has always been accompanied by a storm of controversy, in part because it is often most successful in cases where the defendant’s basic claim is that honor, revenge, or tragic circumstance – not mental illness in its more …

The Application Of Data Mining Techniques To Interrogate Western Australian Water Catchment Data Sets, Ajdin Sehovic Jan 2011

The Application Of Data Mining Techniques To Interrogate Western Australian Water Catchment Data Sets, Ajdin Sehovic

Theses : Honours

Current environmental challenges such as increasing dry land salinity, waterlogging, eutrophication and high nutrient runoff in south western regions of Western Australia may have both cultural and environmental implications in the near future. Advances in computer science disciplines, more specifically, data mining techniques and geographic information services provide the means to be able to conduct longitudinal climate studies to predict changes in the Water catchment areas of Western Australia.

The research proposes to utilise existing spatial data mining techniques in conjunction of modern open-source geospatial tools to interpret trends in Western Australian water catchment land use. This will be achieved …

Comparison Genomics Of Oryza Rufipogon Chromosome Eight Centromere With Other Species Centromeres, Kalyani Ginjupalli Jan 2011

Comparison Genomics Of Oryza Rufipogon Chromosome Eight Centromere With Other Species Centromeres, Kalyani Ginjupalli

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Centromeres are playing a key role in proper segregation of sister chromatids during mitosis and meiosis. At the centromere region in the chromosome, spindle microtubules attached to the kinetochores that direct the chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis. Although centromeric function is conserved among different organisms, there is no conservation of centromeric DNA sequences ranging from budding yeast which has a consensus sequence of approximately 125 base pairs (bp) on each chromosome to Caenorhabditis elegans species which has a holocentric centromere that spans the entire chromosome. However, there are some common proteins that form the kinetochore, such as CENH3 and …

Preparation And Crystal Structures Of Chiral And Non-Chiral Mixed Ligand Copper Complexes Containing N-Methyl Imidazole And Various N-Phthaloylalanines, Hiral Patel Jan 2011

Preparation And Crystal Structures Of Chiral And Non-Chiral Mixed Ligand Copper Complexes Containing N-Methyl Imidazole And Various N-Phthaloylalanines, Hiral Patel

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

A quasiracemate is the cocrystallization of two similarly shaped but chemically distinct molecules of opposite handedness. There has been extensive work done in the field of organic quasiracemates by Dr. Kraig A. Wheeler. Limited work has been done in inorganic quasiracemates. The goal of this study was to prepare various metal based enantiomers, racemates, and quasiracemates using A-phthaloylalanines, and TV-methylimidazole as ligands bound to copper arranged in a centrosymmetric pattern. In this study, we developed a method to prepare A-phthaloylalanines and its copper complexes. Three complexes have yielded crystal structures: a racemate, bis(7V-methylimidazole) bis(D,L-3-chloro-7V-phthaloylalanato)copper(II); a quasiracemate, bis(A-methyhmidazole)(L-3-chloro-iV-phthaloylalanato)(D-3-methyl-7V-phthaloylalanato) copper(II); and an …

An Exploration Of Modeling Techniques For The Study Of The Dynamics Of E-Mail Viruses, Karin Weule Jan 2011

An Exploration Of Modeling Techniques For The Study Of The Dynamics Of E-Mail Viruses, Karin Weule

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

We analyze real data sets from two e-mail viruses, the Magistr.b and the Sircam.a to explore how we can use mathematical models to predict the behavior described by the data. Analysis of the data is conducted primarily with computer programming in MatLab. We focus mainly on the use of two continuous models commonly used in the study of biological diseases, the SIS and the SIR models. A discrete modeling approach using agent-based simulations is also explored and revealed to be potentially useful in developing a compartmentalized model that incorporates both SIS and SIR model behavior. The theory behind the continuous …

Comparison Of Wetland Assessment Methods, Kerstin Green Jan 2011

Comparison Of Wetland Assessment Methods, Kerstin Green

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

After many decades of being considered useless and often destroyed wetlands have become valued for the many functions they provide. To make informed wetland management decisions biologists have to develop practical, rapid, and inexpensive ways to assess biological conditions and functions. Ideally these assessment methods have to measure more than one attribute of the wetland to represent the overall condition of the biological community. For this project I conducted field assessments at mitigation sites in Pembroke Pines, Florida, to see how the newest method used in the State of Florida, the Uniform Mitigation Assessment Method (UMAM), compared to the older …

Selective Inguinal Lymphadenectomy In The Treatment Of Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of The Vulva, Christopher P. Desimone, Jeffrey Elder, John R. Van Nagell Jr. Jan 2011

Selective Inguinal Lymphadenectomy In The Treatment Of Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of The Vulva, Christopher P. Desimone, Jeffrey Elder, John R. Van Nagell Jr.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

En bloc radical vulvectomy with bilateral inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy has now been replaced by radical wide excision and selective inguinal lymphadenectomy based on the stage and location of invasive vulvar cancer. Early stage lateral cancers can be effectively treated by radical wide excision and ipsilateral superficial inguinal lymphadenectomy. Lymph node mapping using perilesional injection of radiocolloid and blue dye may identify sentinel lymph nodes which can be removed, thereby avoiding the morbidity of full inguinal lymphadenectomy in selected patients with early stage disease.

Wiki Behavior In The Workplace: Emotional Aspects Of Content Development, Deborah A. Gears Jan 2011

Wiki Behavior In The Workplace: Emotional Aspects Of Content Development, Deborah A. Gears

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Wikis have been found to be an easy-to-use, low-cost, and Internet-based technology useful in creating and mobilizing knowledge. Wikis hosted within firms (corporate wikis) have become a popular way for employees to share information and collaborate.

Preliminary research suggested that as few as 6% of wiki consumers contributed to the development of wiki pages. Conventional approaches argued that employees judged the costs of participating in wikis (e.g., authoring or changing material, reading messages, following an argument, and posting responses) to exceed the benefits of participating in wikis (e.g., recognition, reputation etc.) - thus many people "lurked" but did not post. …

Alabama's Water Crisis Essay: Alabama Legal Issues Series, Heather Elliott Jan 2011

Alabama's Water Crisis Essay: Alabama Legal Issues Series, Heather Elliott

Articles

Alabama faces a major and expanding water crisis. Population growth and economic development are putting more pressure on water resources already strained by recent droughts, and such droughts are likely to become more frequent and more severe in the future. Disputes with neighboring states over shared water resources threaten Alabama's use of interstate waters to meet future needs. And Alabama's current legal regime is wholly inadequate to meet these challenges. The failures of Alabama's state water law could be corrected with one statute. The State Legislature should act swiftly to adopt a comprehensive water management statute based on the Regulated …

Psychosocial Aspects Of Physical Activity And Fitness In Special-Population, Minority Middle School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry, Anne S. Murphy, Sara Flory, Kimberlydawn Wisdom Jan 2011

Psychosocial Aspects Of Physical Activity And Fitness In Special-Population, Minority Middle School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry, Anne S. Murphy, Sara Flory, Kimberlydawn Wisdom

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

Special-population research predicting physical activity (PA) and fitness with minority middle school children from at-risk environments is rare. Hence, the purpose of our investigation was to evaluate the ability of important social cognitive and environment-based measures to predict PA and fitness with children with developmental delay, cognitive, and emotional impairments. Children (N = 89, ages 11-15) completed questionnaires assessing social cognitive and environment-based constructs, self report PA, and completed fitness testing. Correlational results supported some hypotheses. The descriptive and correlational results also indicated commonalities with similar research on non special-population minority middle school children from at-risk environments.

Ultra-Low Power Electronics For Autonomous Micro-Sensor Applications, Rebeka Davidova Jan 2011

Ultra-Low Power Electronics For Autonomous Micro-Sensor Applications, Rebeka Davidova

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presented the research, design and fabrication associated with a unique application of rectenna technology combined with lock-in amplification. An extremely low-power harmonic transponder is conjoined with an interrogator base-station, and utilizing coherent demodulation the Remote Lock-In Amplifier (RLIA) concept is realized. Utilizing harmonic re-radiation with very low-power input, the 1st generation transponder detects a transmitted interrogation signal and responds by retransmitting the second harmonic of the signal. The 1st generation transponder performs this task while using no additional power besides that which accompanies the wireless signal. Demonstration of the first complete configuration provided proof of concept …

General Strain Theory And Juvenile Delinquency: A Cross-Cultural Study, Wen-Hsu Lin Jan 2011

General Strain Theory And Juvenile Delinquency: A Cross-Cultural Study, Wen-Hsu Lin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

General strain theory (GST) (Agnew, 1992, 2001, 2006a) is an established criminological theory. Although the theory has been examined by many and enjoys empirical support, some limitations of previous studies need to be addressed. First, previous studies have not incorporated all major types of strain in their models; hence, the effects of these strains on delinquency are unclear. Second, many previous studies did not include negative emotions and even negative emotions other than anger. Finally, and the most serious limitation, many previous studies rely heavily on samples from Western countries, mostly the U.S.; thus, possible cultural influences are ignored. Although …

Simulation Of Polycapillary And Multichannel Plate X-Ray Optics, Robert Schmitz Jan 2011

Simulation Of Polycapillary And Multichannel Plate X-Ray Optics, Robert Schmitz

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Simulation of x-ray optical systems is an important tool for optics design for known applications, and optic development for potential applications. Polycapillary optics are thin glass cylinders containing hundreds of thousands of hollow channels that transmit x rays using total external reflection. These optics have been developed for many applications, from beam filtering to x-ray collimating or focusing. A Monte Carlo based ray-tracing simulation was developed to model a wide range of polycapillary optic geometries. The simulation uses a vector-based approach to model all photons and optical geometries in three dimensions. Simulation verification was performed for a wide range of …

Examination Of The Interaction Of Drinking Motives And Personality On Alcohol Use And Alcohol-Related Problems Among College Students, Jessica Lynn Martin Jan 2011

Examination Of The Interaction Of Drinking Motives And Personality On Alcohol Use And Alcohol-Related Problems Among College Students, Jessica Lynn Martin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Approximately 55% of U.S. college students report binge drinking at least once in the previous two weeks (Core Institute, 2006). Students who engage in binge drinking are more likely to experience academic, social and legal problems as a result of their drinking (e.g., Wechsler et al., 2002). It is important for researchers to investigate factors associated with alcohol use and related problems so that prevention and intervention efforts can be targeted toward those students most at-risk for heavy consumption and alcohol-related problems.

An Exploration Of Focused Electron Beam-Induced-Deposition At Cryogenic Temperatures, Matthew Bresin Jan 2011

An Exploration Of Focused Electron Beam-Induced-Deposition At Cryogenic Temperatures, Matthew Bresin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A modified version of electron beam-induced-deposition (EBID) has been studied, where cryogenic substrates were employed to alter the growth environment. Cryogenic substrates enabled multi-layer condensed phase films, which, upon electron exposure and reheating to room temperature, exhibited several unique surface morphologies not present in traditional EBID deposits. By analyzing the composition and structure of the cryogenic deposits, along with simulation of energy deposition from exposure, a diffusion based growth mechanism has been proposed. To test the validity of the proposed model, several process variables were investigated including electron flux, electron fluence, condensate thickness and precursor type. Using the knowledge garnered …
