Wave-Function Functionals For The Density, Marlina Slamet Jan 2011

Wave-Function Functionals For The Density, Marlina Slamet

Physics Faculty Publications

We extend the idea of the constrained-search variational method for the construction of wave-function functionals ψ[χ] of functions χ. The search is constrained to those functions χ such that ψ[χ] reproduces the density ρ(r) while simultaneously leading to an upper bound to the energy. The functionals are thereby normalized and automatically satisfy the electron-nucleus coalescence condition. The functionals ψ[χ] are also constructed to satisfy the electron-electron coalescence condition. The method is applied to the ground state of the helium atom to construct functionals ψ[χ] that reproduce the density as given by the Kinoshita correlated wave function. The expectation …

Characterization Of Poly (Rc) Binding Protein (Pcbp2) And Frataxin, Sudipa Ghimire-Rijal Jan 2011

Characterization Of Poly (Rc) Binding Protein (Pcbp2) And Frataxin, Sudipa Ghimire-Rijal

Wayne State University Theses

Iron is a micronutrient that acts as a cofactor in many prosthetic groups involving itself in almost every biological process. Iron is the key component in our body fluid, flowing in our veins all the time. Iron deficiency disorders affects more than 9 million people worldwide. Similarly, a high level of iron is associated with various disorders which suggest that in order for body to function properly level of iron should be tightly regulated. Many iron binding proteins help in maintaining cellular iron homeostasis by keeping iron in reduced form.

Working on the hypothesis that Poly (rC) Binding Protein family …

Social Workers' Knowledge And Attitudes About Treating Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Angelah Dawn Gomez Jan 2011

Social Workers' Knowledge And Attitudes About Treating Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Angelah Dawn Gomez

Wayne State University Theses

The current research seeks to understand how social work students and social work professionals increase their knowledge about AD/HD and how they formulate their attitudes about the disorder. The literature provided illustrates the many components of AD/HD risks, etiology, treatments, and professional opinions about the disorder. AD/HD is one of the most studied childhood mental health disorders in the nation. However, there is little research providing insight to social workers' knowledge and attitudes about the disorder. This is especially alarming because social workers are one of the largest professional populations to provide mental health services to children and their families. …

Novel Inhibitors Of Lysine Specific Demethylase 1 As Epigenetic Modulators, Michael Crowley Jan 2011

Novel Inhibitors Of Lysine Specific Demethylase 1 As Epigenetic Modulators, Michael Crowley

Wayne State University Theses

The recently discovered enzyme lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) plays an important role in the epigenetic control of gene expression, and aberrant gene silencing secondary to LSD1 over expression is thought to contribute to the development of cancer. We recently reported a series of (bis)guanidines and (bis)biguanides that are potent inhibitors of LSD1, and induce the re-expression of aberrantly silenced tumor suppressor genes in tumor cells in vitro. We now report a new series of isosteres that are also potent inhibitors of LSD1. These compounds induce increases in methylation at the histone 3 lysine 4 (H3K4) chromatin mark, a specific target …

The Human Right To Health And Hiv/Aids: South Africa And South-South Cooperation To Reframe Global Intellectual Property Principles And Promote Access To Essential Medicines, Erika George Jan 2011

The Human Right To Health And Hiv/Aids: South Africa And South-South Cooperation To Reframe Global Intellectual Property Principles And Promote Access To Essential Medicines, Erika George

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The HIV/AIDS pandemic has had a devastating and disproportionate impact in countries of the Global South. The experience of an individual infected with HIV in Africa is very different than that of an individual infected with HIV in America. Life expectancy varies sharply. The ability or inability to access medicines essential for treatment accounts for much of the variance. This article examines how the rhetoric of human rights used in the context of South Africa's AIDS crisis resonated across the Global South, resulted in a powerful social movement for access to medicines, and contributed to important changes in international intellectual …

African Customary Law, Customs, And Women's Rights, Muna Ndulo Jan 2011

African Customary Law, Customs, And Women's Rights, Muna Ndulo

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The sources of law in most African countries are customary law, the common law and legislation both colonial and post-independence. In a typical African country, the great majority of the people conduct their personal activities in accordance with and subject to customary law. Customary law has great impact in the area of personal law in regard to matters such as marriage, inheritance and traditional authority, and because it developed in an era dominated by patriarchy some of its norms conflict with human rights norms guaranteeing equality between men and women. While recognizing the role of legislation in reform, it is …

A Domain Aware Genetic Algorithm For The P-Median Problem, Dennis Vickers Jan 2011

A Domain Aware Genetic Algorithm For The P-Median Problem, Dennis Vickers

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The p-median problem is an NP-complete combinatorial optimization problem often used in the fields of facility location and clustering. Given a graph with n nodes and an integer p < n, the p-median problem seeks a set of p medians such that the sum of the distances of the n nodes from their nearest median is minimized. This dissertation develops a genetic algorithm that generates solutions to the p-median problem that improves on previously published genetic algorithms by implementing operators that exploit domain specific information. More specifically, this GA explores the following:

(1) The advantages of using "good" solutions generated using extant heuristics in the initial generation of chromosomes.

(2) The effectiveness of a crossover operation that exchanges centers in the same neighborhood rather than exchanging arbitrarily chosen subsets of centers.

(3) The efficacy of using a biased mutation operator that favors replacing existing medians from less fit chromosomes with non-median nodes from the same neighborhood as the median being replaced.

Using published …

Melting Kinetics In Microgravity, Martin E. Glicksman Jan 2011

Melting Kinetics In Microgravity, Martin E. Glicksman

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We analyzed the large data archive obtained from microgravity experiments called the Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE). The final orbital mission of the IDGE allowed streaming of real-time video of crystal growth and melting in low-Earth orbit of high-purity pivalic acid anhydride (PVA). Melting kinetics was observed in detail for the first time under microgravity conditions. Normally, terrestrial gravity precludes observation and analysis of conduction-limited melting by stimulating buoyancy flows and inducing collapse of the solid-liquid structure. The initial dendritic mushy zone melts under steady heating into isolated crystallite clusters that remain stationary within the melt, and eventually shrink toward …

Novel Optical Remote Sensing Technology For Prediction Of Harmful Algal Blooms, Elizabeth Tobin Jan 2011

Novel Optical Remote Sensing Technology For Prediction Of Harmful Algal Blooms, Elizabeth Tobin

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are outbreaks of planktonic algae that threaten public health, degrade aquatic ecosystems and cause major economic losses. Most HABs are detected only after they reach an advanced stage, when they have already caused significant ecological and economic damage. However, many HAB-forming species have two distinct life stages, a dormant benthic stage and a vegetative pelagic stage. The primary objective of this project was to construct and test a prototype of an autonomous optical sensor for the detection and characterization of HAB-forming algae as they emerge from the sediments.

Dna Fabrication, A Wake Up Call: The Need To Reevaluate The Admissibility And Reliability Of Dna Evidence, Kristen Bolden

Georgia State University Law Review

In June 2009, Israeli forensic science researchers published a ground breaking study that put credence to the possibility of creating artificial Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) that can fool current forensic testing procedures. The researchers asserted that anyone with the proper equipment and basic understanding of molecular biology could create artificial DNA in virtually unending amounts. Furthermore, the research demonstrates that the current American forensic science system utilized by law enforcement is incapable of distinguishing between artificial and genuine DNA.

National Park Service Nonnative Plant Control In The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Jacob Halpin, Laurie Eberhardt, Laura Thompson Jan 2011

National Park Service Nonnative Plant Control In The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Jacob Halpin, Laurie Eberhardt, Laura Thompson

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Invasive plants have become a growing threat to plant diversity and hydrology in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Invasive plants compete with native plants for nutrients and sunlight, and certain invasive species have been known to completely take over certain areas of wetlands, nearly destroying entire ecosystems. The Dunes Lakeshore contains over 1,400 plants species and is one of the top ten most diverse national parks in the United States. The mission statement of the National Park Service is to “preserve for the educational, inspirational, and recreational use of the public certain portions of the Indiana Dunes.” In order …

Improving Ecological Monitoring Of Restoration Sites In Northwest Indiana Through A Glisten-Nirmi Partnership., Danyi Harper, Don Meola

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Northwest Indiana is an area of active ecological restoration with 169 documented restoration projects. However, the ability to assess the success of restoration projects is incomplete because monitoring of the progress of these restorations does not exist. NIRMI was created in 2010 to establish a system of evaluating and quantifying plant species in local habitat restoration projects throughout Northwest Indiana. NIRMI uses a standardized approach to collect data that is placed within an open-access database for use by other researchers, restoration groups, and individuals in evaluation of restoration efforts. Data collection uses the CVS-EEP protocol for recording vegetation, a standard …

Baseline Data Analysis Of The Throgren Basin Retrofit, Erin Argyilan, Jennifer Birchfield, Tom Goyne, Nicole Grabos, Caitlin Soley, Jennifer Wunsch

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The Thorgren Basin, located in Valparaiso, IN, was created as a component of the stormwater management system for the city. The basin’s primary function is to collect stormwater from two separate regions of the Salt Creek Watershed after large storm events, that is then discharged through a single outlet. In its current state the basin has limited infiltration capabilities due to a lack of vegetation and pervious surfaces. The Save the Dunes Conservation Fund, a local non-profit group, provided a cost share opportunity to naturalize Thorngren basin. The goal of the summer 2011 project was to create a monitoring strategy …

Measure 26: Fear Mongering, Self-Execution & Potential Implications For Birth Control, Jonathan Will Jan 2011

Measure 26: Fear Mongering, Self-Execution & Potential Implications For Birth Control, Jonathan Will

Journal Articles

Depending on what we mean by “fertilization,” there could be impacts on many reproductive choices including birth control, fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF), and of course, women’s ability to choose to have an abortion. Certain proponents of Measure 26 suggest that even discussing these implications (other than perhaps abortion) amounts to fear mongering. While primarily focusing on birth control, the goal of this essay is to introduce readers to why the concerns regarding these reproductive choices are very real, and how these concerns are further complicated by the issue of whether, if passed, Measure 26 would be deemed …

Humanized Mouse Models Of Hiv Infection, Paul W. Denton, J. Victor Garcia Jan 2011

Humanized Mouse Models Of Hiv Infection, Paul W. Denton, J. Victor Garcia

Biology Faculty Publications

Because of the limited tropism of HIV, in vivo modeling of this virus has been almost exclusively limited to other lentiviruses such as SIV that reproduce many important characteristics of HIV infection. However, there are significant genetic and biological differences among lentiviruses and some HIV-specific interventions are not effective against other lentiviruses in non-human hosts. For these reasons much emphasis has recently been placed on developing alternative animal models that support HIV replication and recapitulate key aspects of HIV infection and pathogenesis in humans. Humanized mice, CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cell transplanted immunodeficient mice and in particular mice also implanted with …

Sirt1 Modulates Aggregation And Toxicity Through Deacetylation Of The Androgen Receptor In Cell Models Of Sbma, Heather L. Montie, Richard G. Pestell, Diane E. Merry

PCOM Scholarly Works

Posttranslational protein modifications can play a major role in disease pathogenesis; phosphorylation, sumoylation, and acetylation modulate the toxicity of a variety of proteotoxic proteins. The androgen receptor (AR) is substantially modified, in response to hormone binding, by phosphorylation, sumoylation, and acetylation; these modifications might thus contribute to DHT-dependent polyglutamine (polyQ)-expanded AR proteotoxicity in spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA). SIRT1, a nuclear protein and deacetylase of the AR, is neuroprotective in many neurodegenerative disease models. Our studies reveal that SIRT1 also offers protection against polyQexpanded AR by deacetylating the AR at lysines 630/632/633. This finding suggested that nuclear AR acetylation …

Implementing A Sheltered Science Course In An Iowa High School, Erin Holt Johnson

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

English Learners (ELs) entering U.S. schools at the high school level face the enormous challenge of acquiring academic literacy as well as secondary-level content in a relatively short period of time. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that a significant number of the ELs entering at the secondary level are students with limited or interrupted formal educations as a result of family migrations, unequal schooling in their home countries, political unrest or even war. In response to this pressing need to teach language and content simultaneously, many school districts are adopting the sheltered instruction (SI) model. This paper will …

Strategies For Conserving Forest Genetic Resources In The Face Of Climate Change, John Bradley St.Clair, Glenn Thomas Howe Jan 2011

Strategies For Conserving Forest Genetic Resources In The Face Of Climate Change, John Bradley St.Clair, Glenn Thomas Howe

Turkish Journal of Botany

Conservation of genetic diversity is important for continued evolution of populations to new environments, as well as continued availability of traits of interest in genetic improvement programs. Rapidly changing climates present new threats to the conservation of forest genetic resources. We can no longer assume that in situ reserves will continue to preserve existing genetic diversity. Management of reserves should become more active. In some reserves, existing genetic diversity should be preserved by creating stands that are more resistant to threats using silvicultural treatments such as thinning and prescribed burning. In other reserves, natural selection and adaptation to changed environments …
