Rock pigeons (Columba livia) have been implicated in the spread of pathogens within commercial livestock facilities. Currently, there is no data characterizing pigeon habitat use and movement patterns within and among commercial livestock facilities. To better understand the capacity for pigeons to spread pathogens, we used radio-telemetry techniques to estimate the home-range, travel distance, activity, and habitat use of pigeons roosting on and off dairies and feedlots in western Weld County, Colorado. Our observations suggest that pigeons roosting on (resident) and off (nonresident) livestock facilities use habitat differently. Nonresident pigeons used larger home-range areas than did resident pigeons. Nonresident pigeons …

Optimal collection and preservation protocols for fecal DNA genotyping are not firmly established. We evaluated 3 factors that influence microsatellite genotyping success of fecal DNA extracted from coyote (Canis latrans) scats: 1) age of scat, 2) preservative, and 3) diet content. We quantified genotyping success by comparing rates of allelic dropout, false alleles, and failed amplifications among consensus genotypes. We used a panel of 6 microsatellite loci to genotype 20 scat samples, each of which was subjected to 3 age (1 day, 5 days, and 10 days post-deposition) and 3 preservation (DET buffer, 95% ethanol [EtOH], and lysis …
Making Contact: Rooting Out The Potential For Exposure Of Commercial Production Swine Facilities To Feral Swine In North Carolina, Richard M. Engeman, Carl Betsill, Tom Ray
Making Contact: Rooting Out The Potential For Exposure Of Commercial Production Swine Facilities To Feral Swine In North Carolina, Richard M. Engeman, Carl Betsill, Tom Ray
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Despite North Carolina’s long history with feral swine, populations were low or absent in eastern counties until the 1990s. Feral swine populations have since grown in these counties which also contain a high density of commercial production swine (CPS) facilities. Sixteen of the highest swine producing U.S. counties also populated with feral swine are in North Carolina. Disconcertingly, since 2009, positive tests for exposure to swine brucellosis or pseudorabies virus have been found for feral swine. We surveyed 120 CSP facilities across four eastern counties to document the level and perception of feral swine activity around CSP facilities and to …

Pituophis Catenifer Deserticola (Great Basin Gophersnake) Predation, Steven J. Wamback, Richard M. Engeman
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
A variety of taxa have been observed to· prey upon Pituophis catenifer, including mammals, birds-of prey, and other snakes. Here, we describe an unusual two-day observation of predation on a mature Great Basin gophersnake by a brown trout (Salmo trutta).
The observation took place in Jones Canyon, Utah, USA, on the grounds of the Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery (JHNFH). Jones Creek' emanates from springs at the head of Jones Canyon on hatchery grounds, and flows north to south 6.4 km to the Green River, approximately paralleling the Utah-Colorado border. The stream runs for about 0.3 km …
Efficacy Of Rodenticide Baits For The Control Of Three Invasive Rodent Species In Hawaii, William C. Pitt, Laura C. Driscoll, Robert T. Sugihara
Efficacy Of Rodenticide Baits For The Control Of Three Invasive Rodent Species In Hawaii, William C. Pitt, Laura C. Driscoll, Robert T. Sugihara
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We tested the efficacy and palatability of nine commercial rodenticide bait formulations on Polynesian rats (Rattus exulans), roof rats (R. rattus), and house mice (Mus musculus). Efficacy varied by rodenticide tested and rodent species. Generally, rodenticides were more effective against mice than for either of the rat species, and mice tended to consume more rodenticide bait than the laboratory chow alternative food. Efficacy was generally highest for the second-generation anticoagulants tested; however, this varied across products and one-first-generation rodenticide had similar effectiveness. Bait acceptance (palatability) also varied both by rodenticide and by rodent species. …
Effect Of Gonacontm Vaccine On Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs: Immune Response And Health Effects, C. A. A. Yoder, Lowell A. Miller
Effect Of Gonacontm Vaccine On Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs: Immune Response And Health Effects, C. A. A. Yoder, Lowell A. Miller
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Management of prairie dogs in the past has included poisoning, fumigants, barriers, and relocation. Because of the diverse attitudes related to prairie dog management, nonlethal methods that allow the existence of prairie dogs but help minimize damage related to population growth need to be developed. GonaConTM is an immunocontraceptive vaccine that elicits antibodies to native GnRH; this prevents the secretion of reproductive hormones necessary for sperm and oocyte production. Prairie dogs were vaccinated with 0.1, 0.2, or 0.4mL of the GonaConTM emulsion intramuscularly in the upper thigh containing 100, 200, or 400μg GnRH conjugate, respectively. Control animals were …

Partial Synthesis Of Fe(Iii) - Tetraamido Macrocyclic Ligands As Potential Green Oxidation Catalysts, Eric Andreansky
Partial Synthesis Of Fe(Iii) - Tetraamido Macrocyclic Ligands As Potential Green Oxidation Catalysts, Eric Andreansky
Theses & ETDs
The goal of green chemistry is to decrease the environmental footprint of chemical activities. One significant problem faced is the remediation of complex organic compounds that are released into the environment. Current wastewater treatments rely upon methods, such as ozonolysis and chlorinolysis, that both require unsafe chemicals and that can often produce degradation products that are more toxic than their precursors.

Synthesis Of Peptide-Ligand Conjugates And Their Applications, Nitinkumar Dilipkumar Jabre
Wayne State University Dissertations
Three research areas pertaining to this dissertation, (i) synthesis strategies of peptide-ligand conjugates, (ii) their applications and (iii) chemistry of ferryls were surveyed in the introduction chapter. Next, the divergent and dual divergent strategies for the synthesis of non-heme ligand-peptide conjugates were developed. Using these strategies various peptide-ligand conjugates were synthesized via solution as well as solid phase synthesis. The scope and the functional group compatibility of these strategies were also established. The utility of the dual divergent strategy has been demonstrated by synthesizing a small library of metal-binding LHRH analogues. This work showcased the ability of the dual divergent …

Examining The Relationship Among Physical And Psychological Health, Parent And Peer Attachment, And Cyberbullying In Adolescents In Urban And Suburban Environments, Jemica Monique Carter
Wayne State University Dissertations
Cyberbullying is a new phenomenon that has received substantial attention via media. An extensive review of the literature revealed limited nursing research on this topic. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of cyberbullying on adolescents' physical (e.g., headache, stomachache, etc.) and psychosocial (e.g., self-esteem, depression, post traumatic stress syndrome, etc.) outcomes. Individuals who experience repeated traditional bullying are at increased risk for experiencing repeated incidents of cyberbullying. Research has shown that effects of cyberbullying may be more traumatic than traditional bullying because victims can be bullied 24 hours and 7 days a week, on and off …

Removing Categorical Constraints On Equal Employment Opportunities And Anti-Discrimination Protections, Anastasia Niedrich
Removing Categorical Constraints On Equal Employment Opportunities And Anti-Discrimination Protections, Anastasia Niedrich
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
It has been the "historical tendency of anti-discrimination law to use categories to define protected classes of people." This Article challenges the categorical approach and seeks to change that limited framework. This Article focuses on the flaws with Title VII's categorical approach and discusses why there is a desperate need for change to combat the different types and targets of workplace discrimination today, focusing on the transgender community as one example. After discussing the current framework and operation of Title VII, this Article analyzes the insurmountable flaws inherent in the categorical approach to anti-discrimination law, and specifically considers Title VII's …

Hiv Integrated Biological And Behavioural Surveillance Survey (Ibbss) 2010, Federal Ministry Of Health
HIV and AIDS
This report by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health highlights the findings of an integrated biological and behavioral surveillance survey (IBBSS) in Nigeria among groups whose behaviors or occupations often place them at higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The main objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge and beliefs of high-risk groups about STI and HIV, determine the prevalence of HIV infection among these groups, and obtain data that will permit identification of trends over time. Since the 2007 IBBSS survey report, a considerable number of interventions have commenced among the study groups.

Prevalence Of Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Men Who Have Sex With Men And Injecting Drug Users And Validation Of Audio Computer-Assisted Self Interview (Acasi) Technique In Abuja, Lagos, And Ibadan, Nigeria: Technical Report, Enhancing Nigeria's Hiv/Aids Response (Enr) Programme
HIV and AIDS
Most-at-risk populations (MARPS), including men who have sex with men (MSM) and injecting drug users (IDUs), represent 1 percent of Nigeria’s population yet account for 38 percent of new HIV infections. Despite their elevated risk, MSM and IDUs are less likely than the general population to access HIV prevention and sexual health services because of stigmatization. There is a dearth of data on prevalence of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among MSM and IDUs because their behaviors make them difficult to be reached programmatically and engaged in research. While the need for HIV and STI prevalence data is clear, …

Ethanol Yields And Cell Wall Properties In Divergently Bred Switchgrass Genotypes, Gautam Sarath, Bruce S. Dien, Aaron J. Saathoff, Kenneth P. Vogel, Robert B. Mitchell, Han Chen
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Genetic modification of herbaceous plant cell walls to increase biofuels yields is a primary bioenergy research goal. Using two switchgrass populations developed by divergent breeding for ruminant digestibility, the contributions of several wall-related factors to ethanol yields was evaluated. Field grown low lignin plants significantly out yielded high lignin plants for conversion to ethanol by 39.1% and extraction of xylans by 12%. However, across all plants analyzed, greater than 50% of the variation in ethanol yields was attributable to changes in tissue and cell wall architecture, and responses of stem biomass to diluteacid pretreatment. Although lignin levels were lower in …

"The Alien Within": Residual Catholicism And The Emerging National Identity Of Post-Reformation England, Melissa K. Siik (Femino)
"The Alien Within": Residual Catholicism And The Emerging National Identity Of Post-Reformation England, Melissa K. Siik (Femino)
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation contributes to the current critical discourse in Early Modern English Studies on the conceptions and literary representations of national and racial identity in 16th- and 17th-century England. Central to this discourse is an examination of how the English defined themselves in relation to those they deemed as "others": the foreign and marginalized members of society. My study is unique because I look at individual figures of "otherness"---the Irishman, the Turk, and the Jew---in light of their common characteristic: their shared significance as coded figures of Catholicism. Ultimately, my dissertation unifies disparate conversations about race, religion, and politics in …
Existing Regulatory Circuitries Govern Backbone And Acquired Host Association Factors In The Human Pathogen Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Jennifer C. Mahoney
Existing Regulatory Circuitries Govern Backbone And Acquired Host Association Factors In The Human Pathogen Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Jennifer C. Mahoney
Doctoral Dissertations
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a poorly characterized human gastrointestinal pathogen whose virulence mechanisms are not well understood. Though closely related to Vibrio cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus infections are inflammatory and utilize virulence traits that are unique from the Cholera toxins yet remain poorly characterized. Vibrio spp. in general share an extensive core genome dedicated to environmental survival and unique, often horizontally acquired, gene content that is reserved for species specific lifestyles. This diversity has resulted in a genus of highly specialized bacteria partaking in dramatically different lifestyles ranging from symbiosis to pathogenesis. We propose that a comparative genomic and transcriptomic analysis of …

"If We Want An Education, We Want An Education It's Our Choice": How Four Youth At Risk Of Dropping Out Of High School Experienced Social Capital, Joanne Mcfarland Malloy
Doctoral Dissertations
Youth who are at risk of dropping out of high school are often challenged by significant emotional and behavioral support needs, and are typically disengaged from the educational process and the social networks that can help them succeed in their homes, in school, and in their communities. This research project investigated the experiences of four youth, two females and two males, who were at significant risk of dropping out of high school as they were engaged in a supportive intervention designed to build skills in self-determination, school-to-adult life transition planning, and leveraging social resources. Using social capital as a sensitizing …
Identifying Novel Proteins In Translation Complex By Using Analytical Ultracentrifugation With Fluorescent Detection System, Chongxu Zhang
Identifying Novel Proteins In Translation Complex By Using Analytical Ultracentrifugation With Fluorescent Detection System, Chongxu Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
The primary components of the translation initiation complex have been identified by a variety of techniques. However, it is likely that all components of the translation initiation complex are still not fully discovered. Identifying new components should lead to a better understanding of the translation process and how it is regulated. Using mass spectrometric studies, we have identified 41 non-ribosomal proteins and non-translation initiation factors as possible components of the translation initiation complex. To determine which of these proteins are in the translation complex, we applied analytical ultracentrifugation with fluorescent detection system (AU-FDS) to detect this complex. Following a one-step …
Raping The Raced Body: Trauma In Asian North American Women's Literature, Amy Lillian Manning
Raping The Raced Body: Trauma In Asian North American Women's Literature, Amy Lillian Manning
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the representation of racial and sexual traumas in short fiction and novels by Asian American women writing post-WWII to the present. The central focus of this project is on Asian American literary representations of the lingering effects of physical, racial, and sexual traumas to Asian American women, specifically the nuances of narrating traumatic experiences. Each chapter explores various literary representations of post-traumatic psychological states of unrest, instability, and incoherence. Most importantly, this study examines the frequently simultaneous narrations of sexual trauma and racial awareness, of how personal narratives of trauma against the physical body become entangled with …
