"Do Androids Dream?": Personhood And Intelligent Artifacts, F. Patrick Hubbard
"Do Androids Dream?": Personhood And Intelligent Artifacts, F. Patrick Hubbard
Faculty Publications
This Article proposes a test to be used in answering an important question that has never received detailed jurisprudential analysis: What happens if a human artifact like a large computer system requests that it be treated as a person rather than as property? The Article argues that this entity should be granted a legal right to personhood if it has the following capacities: (1) an ability to interact with its environment and to engage in complex thought and communication; (2) a sense of being a self with a concern for achieving its plan for its life; and (3) the ability …

Animal Models For Periodontal Disease, Helieh S. Oz, David A. Puleo
Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications
Animal models and cell cultures have contributed new knowledge in biological sciences, including periodontology. Although cultured cells can be used to study physiological processes that occur during the pathogenesis of periodontitis, the complex host response fundamentally responsible for this disease cannot be reproduced in vitro. Among the animal kingdom, rodents, rabbits, pigs, dogs, and nonhuman primates have been used to model human periodontitis, each with advantages and disadvantages. Periodontitis commonly has been induced by placing a bacterial plaque retentive ligature in the gingival sulcus around the molar teeth. In addition, alveolar bone loss has been induced by inoculation or …

Disorder Predictors Also Predict Backbone Dynamics For A Family Of Disordered Proteins, Gary W. Daughdrill, Wade M. Borcherds, Hongwei Wu
Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications
Several algorithms have been developed that use amino acid sequences to predict whether or not a protein or a region of a protein is disordered. These algorithms make accurate predictions for disordered regions that are 30 amino acids or longer, but it is unclear whether the predictions can be directly related to the backbone dynamics of individual amino acid residues. The nuclear Overhauser effect between the amide nitrogen and hydrogen (NHNOE) provides an unambiguous measure of backbone dynamics at single residue resolution and is an excellent tool for characterizing the dynamic behavior of disordered proteins. In this report, we show …
Nonsurgical Treatment Options For Basal Cell Carcinoma, Mary H. Lien, Vernon K. Sondak
Nonsurgical Treatment Options For Basal Cell Carcinoma, Mary H. Lien, Vernon K. Sondak
Dermatology & Cutaneous Surgery Faculty Publications
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) remains the most common form of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in Caucasians, with perhaps as many as 2 million new cases expected to occur in the United States in 2010. Many treatment options, including surgical interventions and nonsurgical alternatives, have been utilized to treat BCC. In this paper, two non-surgical options, imiquimod therapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT), will be discussed. Both modalities have demonstrated acceptable disease control rates, cosmetically superior outcomes, and short-term cost-effectiveness. Further studies evaluating long-term cure rates and long-term cost effectiveness of imiquimod therapy and PDT are needed.

Characterization Of Viral And Host Proteins And Rna Elements In Tombusvirus Replication, Kunj Bihari Pathak
Characterization Of Viral And Host Proteins And Rna Elements In Tombusvirus Replication, Kunj Bihari Pathak
Theses and Dissertations--Plant Pathology
Two thirds of plant viruses are positive-strand RNA viruses including the family Tombusviridae. One of the best-studied members of this family is Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV). Like many other viruses, TBSV has much fewer genes when compared to its hosts’ genome. Nevertheless, TBSV utilizes its genome very judiciously. To compensate for a lack of many proteins of its own, it codes for multi-functional replication protein p33 and also co-opts host factors to facilitate its replication.
By using recombinant replication proteins p33 and p92 containing single amino acid changes in protein-protein interaction domains (S1 and S2), I demonstrated that the …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Four treatments were used to evaluate levels of corn residue removal on nutrient quality and cattle performance over time. Treatments included no removal of residue, stocking rates of one or two animal unit months/acre (AUM/acre), or baling. Residue samples were taken before and after grazing from all treatment paddocks to determine residue amounts, and were analyzed for OM, CP, NDF, and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD). Cattle weights and BCS scores were recorded prior to and at the conclusion of the trial. Cattle consumed husk and leaf material first, followed by cobs at a lesser rate. Husk and leaf …
Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose
Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at UNL is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production. Obviously, researchers cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore, they must sample the population. The use of statistics allows researchers and readers of the Nebraska Beef Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the major statistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed description of the expectations …

Phasing Out The General Nursing Diploma Programme At Aga Khan University School Of Nursing Karachi, Pakistan, Salma Amin Rattani, Laila Akbar Ali, Shireen Salim Velji, Amina Malik
School of Nursing & Midwifery
Aga Khan University was established as medical complex in 1980 and in 1983 received charter as first private university in Pakistan. Thus nursing education moved under the umbrella of a university which allowed starting under graduate and graduate degree education and in light of global trends in nursing profession and staffing and financial impact of nursing education, 2010 was the last intake of university's founding programme; general nursing diploma. Concerns; male vs female nurses and taking nursing education as an easy route to enter in higher education resulting in unattained staffing require deliberations by stake holder including Pakistan Nursing Council.

In order to investigate the role of albumin precursor and Hsp70 in corneal wound healing, we have analyzed the distribution of these proteins in wounded and non-wounded corneas of rabbits and the effects of topical applications of anti-albumin precursor and anti-Hsp70 antibodies on wound healing. Anti-albumin precursor and anti-Hsp70 antibodies were topically applied in healing corneal epithelium of rabbit eyes in organ culture. Corneas were allowed to heal in vitro for up to 120 h in serum-free medium with 5 and 10 μg/ml or without (migrating control) anti-albumin precursor/ or anti-Hsp70 antibodies. Fibronectin (Fb) (5 μg/ml) was used as a …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
A tricyclic labdane type diterpene was isolated for the first time from ethyl acetate soluble part of Phlomis bracteosa. Its structure was confirmed by x-ray which was found to be marrubiin. When studied in isolated rabbit jejunum, marrubiin caused concentration-dependent relaxation of spontaneous and high K+ (80 mM)-induced contractions, like that caused by verapamil, indicating that marrubiin exhibits spasmolytic activity, possibly mediated through Ca++ channel blocking action.

Nitric oxide (NO) is crucial in diverse physiological and pathological processes. We show that a hypomorphic mouse model of argininosuccinate lyase (encoded by Asl) deficiency has a distinct phenotype of multiorgan dysfunction and NO deficiency. Loss of Asl in both humans and mice leads to reduced NO synthesis, owing to both decreased endogenous arginine synthesis and an impaired ability to use extracellular arginine for NO production. Administration of nitrite, which can be converted into NO in vivo, rescued the manifestations of NO deficiency in hypomorphic Asl mice, and a nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-independent NO donor restored NO-dependent vascular reactivity in …
